Our Vision To celebrate the journey of learning by preparing students for their future through a caring, nurturing learning culture, where all students have the opportunity to achieve personal and academic success. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students The term is nearly at an end and as always it has been busy and productive with lots of quality learning taking place. Last week I was very fortunate to visit Sydney to participate in some Master Class professional learning and to receive a ‘Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award’. It was a great honour for myself and the school to receive this award as there were nearly 450 nominations from across Australia and only 12 awards given. The award is in recognition of the great work and achievements that we have made, and all of the school community should be proud. Our swimming squad has been hard at work practising for the swimming carnival to be held next Thursday morning. The swimmers are looking really good and we are hoping for an excellent performance. Please come to the Aquatic Centre and support the students if you are free. As a reward for all of the students who have shown fantastic behaviour and have their Good Standing there will be fun activities running throughout next week at the Calista Adventure Playground. We hope that all students will be able to participate. Thanks to all who have supported our Easter fundraisers. Please continue to bring Easter raffle prizes and sell your raffle tickets. Hot cross bun orders are still being taken and there is prize, of a big Easter hamper, for the student who places the most orders. Next Friday we have our annual Easter Bonnet Parade in the undercover area. It promises to be another great event so please come along if you are available. Over the holidays, please remind your children about road safety. We are still receiving reports about students crossing roads in an unsafe way and the last thing we want is for any of our children to be injured. ANZAC day occurs at the end of the holiday break and we are going to commemorate on the first Friday (28 th of April) after we return from the break. This will be held on the Quadrangle if the weather permits. All parents and families are invited so please come along. Next term we have a number of exciting events, including whole school reward activities. Winter sports start and NAPLAN testing will take place for Years 3 and 5 in week 3. We will also be writing and sending out reports at the end of the term. We look forward to a new term, with school reopening on Wednesday 26 th April following the ANZAC day public holiday. Finally I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday. This week’s assembly is going to be presented by the West Coast Eagles, so please come along and enjoy. Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award

This award was given in recognition of all of the good work that the staff and students do and because of the fantastic results that we are achieving at Calista. This is something for us all to be very proud of. Last week Mr Skinner and I travelled to Sydney to collect the award. We took part in professional development sessions which provided us with great opportunities to spend time with colleagues from other high performing schools across Australia. We were able to hear about what they are thinking and learn about what teaching and learning looks like in their schools. It was also really nice to meet some of the big names in business and media and to hear their views about education. Mr Skinner received the award at a special ceremony which was attended by lots of special guests who were there to support, promote and celebrate all of the good things that are happening in education and schools across Australia. The award winners were chosen from across the country, with each receiving funds to spend on a project to enhance their students’ education and to support other professional development. There is also a trip to Singapore planned to study high performing schools.

Bunuru - Second summer (season of the adolescence) February - March

Bunuru is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Hot easterly winds continue with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons if you're close to the coast. Therefore, traditionally this was, and still is, a great time for living and fishing by the coast, rivers and estuaries. Because of this, freshwater foods and seafood made up major parts of the diet during this time of year.

Bunuru is also a time of the white flowers with lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, including Jarrah, Marri and Ghost Gums.

Another striking flower that is hard to go past is the female Zamia (Macrozamia riedlei). Being much larger than that of its male counterpart, the huge cones emerge from the centre of the plant with masses of a cotton wool like substance.

As the hot, dry weather continues the seed upon the cones change from green to bright red, indicating they're ripening and becoming more attractive to animals, particularly the emu, that will eat the toxic fleshy outer.

On the 16th of September last year four of our students were invited to a special writer’s workshop at the Art Gallery of WA. They were able to spend time with a published author who explored the art with them giving them writing tips and ideas. The author’s then helped the students’ to write their own piece. Each student was able to create a piece of writing which was then compiled into a booklet. Below is the piece completed by Sam Pereira. Look out in the next few newsletters for more great pieces of writing. It was great day and the students represented Calista wonderfully.

CAR PARK MADNESS

By Sam Pereira Mentor Author: Geoff Havell

Darkness! A shiver runs down my spine. Car horns blare in the distance. I spin around and catch a glimpse of light. I walk very slowly and carefully towards it. Car horns come closer which is strange because nobody comes down here anymore. Where are my friends? I need to find them. I break into a slow jog, still careful as the darkness surrounds me. SMASH! Instant pain in my knees as they scrape along the gravel floor. My toe throbs! I get to me feet, and begin searching again. I keep thinking I see my friends. Shadows dart from pillar to pillar. My heart beats wildly. I begin jogging again. I’m looking around, swinging my head from left to right. The light is getting closer now. I start running a little faster. I’m getting so close that the shadows become shapes. I’m still searching for my friends. It’s like they’ve disappeared. Where are they? Where could they be? I keep looking left and right, cautious. I hear footsteps approaching. Is it them? I’m blinded! Car lights shine on me from every angle. The fumes overpower me. I gasp for fresh air. Why are these cars here? Where are my friends? I sprint desperately hoping to see them soon. I feel so frightened. I can see a hand poking out from a pillar. My friends! I start to go towards them when…cars surround me. The lights, the noise, the fumes… I shield my eyes, overwhelmed, confused. I turn in circles, looking for a way out. What is going on? Suddenly I feel a cold, rough hand on my shoulder. I whirl around to see a fist come flying at my face… DARKNESS!
