ROATAN HIGHLIGHTSby Bonnie Parker

AUGUST

This is the 8th year our Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist Church has visited the small Island of Roatan, one of the Bay Islands located off the east coast of mainland Honduras. Without the finan-cial support from Calimesa’s Christmas offering, plus willing teams of volunteers, not only from our church but from the Loma Linda University Service Learning Department, this year’s mission outreach would not have been possible. In recent years, tourism has become part of the island economy; however, the east end of the island, where we worked, still has limited access to medical, dental services and modern conveniences.

The Roatan mission project was started by the recommendation of Steve Dunbar, who has been using Roatan and parts of Honduras as his Loma Linda Uni-versity Marine Biology outdoor classroom for study of ocean life - specifically turtles.

The 2016 team of 27 included students, LLU faculty and the following Calimesa church members under the lead-ership of Pastor Pablo Ariza.

1) DENTAL: (Steve Morrow, Richard and Bonnie Parker, and Jaci Shankel.) We had three dental students, three dental hygiene students, four den-tists, one dental hygienist and three dental auxiliaries. The dental team saw over 250 patients and did over 400 procedures.

2) MEDICAL: (Landan Aveling, Gina Flores, Tom and Meredith Sherwin and Liza West) did health assessments and counseling, minor surgeries and IV sedation for pediatric dental patients.

3) CHILDREN’S MINISTRY: (Sara West, along with the help of Julian Aveling, Shelby Herling, Spencer and

Sophia Sherwin, and as many other teams members as possible to assistant each night). Nearly 100 children crowded into the small Diamond Rock Church. Their enthusiasm for the music, drama, stories and crafts was totally amazing (deafening)! One of the highlights of the week was giving each of the children a new water bottle that was donated by the Calimesa Vacation Bible School attendees. The team brought over 165 and it was fun to see how proudly the kids carried their precious gift! This was definately an improvement from the baggies that they had been using. Thank you Calimesa VBS’ers!

4) COMMUNITY PROJECTS: (Stephen Reilly, Jere Sandberg and oth-ers). At the Camp Bay elementary school, projects included installation of 60 feet of new fence with new gate, new rope for the school’s flag pole, school benches and desks were painted and repaired and a water faucet was fixed so kids could wash their hands.

Words cannot adequately describe the wonderful team spirit and close bond that we made with each other during our week. What a blessing that each of us received along with the people we served.

AUGUST CAMPMEETING SOON TO BEGIN

Saul Barcelo

Kendra Haloviak Valentine Ted Levterov

Calimesa Church’s August Camp-meeting begins on Sabbath August 6, 2016 and will continue for each of the month’s four Sabbaths. Guest speak-ers for morning worship services are all associated with Adventist institu-tions in the Inland Empire. Each will be developing an aspect of the series theme “Into All the World” during services at 8:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. in the church sanctuary.

First among the speakers is Saul Barcelo, a former member of the Calimesa Church pastoral staff and now a chaplain at Loma Linda Uni-versity Medical Center. His August 6 sermon is titled “God Ahead of Us.”

Following on August 13 will be Jon Paulien, Ph.D., dean of the Loma Linda University School of Religion. Himself a member of our Calimesa congregation, Dr. Paulien has chosen the topic “Babble On or Gate of God?” for his message.

Kendra Haloviak Valentine, Ph.D., will speak on “The Praying

Imagination” for the August 20 ser-vices. She is an associate professor in the HMS Richards Divinity School at La Sierra University.

The final speaker for the series, on August 27, is Theodore “Ted” Levterov, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Loma Linda University School of Religion and also a Calimesa member. He will speak on “Ellen White and Revelation 14: A Case for the Missing Jesus.”

Two special concerts are planned: 1) Guy Penrod, gospel vocalist and formerly of the Bill Gaither trio, will be in concert at the Loma Linda University Church on August 20, 2016 at 7:30 pm. Tickets must be purchased on line at itickets.com or by calling 800-965-9324 as they will not be available at the door. 2) The Wil-liam Chunestudy Men’s Chorus will present a free concert in the Calimesa Church sanctuary on August 20 at 5 p.m.

Musicians from our Calimesa church and special guest artists will be featured in sacred music presenta-tions throughout the August series. Our own Camp Meeting Vocal Band, keyboardists Michael Fillman and Carole Bretsch, and the Kim Family Strings will be joined by the visit-ing Connor Smith Trio, the Shan-non and Kellie Barnes vocal duo, and vocalist Desmond Clark. Other musicians include the Pro Deo Sing-ers and Orchestra, keyboard players Dona Klein and Gary Donesky and instrumentalists Erika Jones (accor-dion), Wilbert Perez (trumpet) and Dennis Blomberg (banjo).

If you were challenged as a child when asked to memorize a Bible verse, join others at the church on Friday, August 12, at 7 p.m. to hear Calimesa member Mary Quishenberry recite the entire Book of Revelation from memory.

On Sabbath morning, August 20, the Pro Deo Singers and Orchestra, from Loma Linda, will share their vibrant and youthful blend of sacred music.

An all-church haystack lunch will follow the second service on August 6. On all other August Sabbaths, the regular visitors potluck will be pro-vided by designated Calimesa family members.

Flying home on Turkish Airlines, Ben spent twelve hours at the Istanbul airport just two days after the terrorist attack there, where security was high but pleasant -- as good as or better than any other large international airport. Spencer Sherwin finished his first year of college at WWU and enjoyed it very much. He and Tyler got to play in the WWU orchestra together for one last year, just like in the old days when they were young. Spencer is spending his second summer working at Leoni Meadows Camp near Placerville, CA. Sophie Sherwin fin-ished her sophomore year at Mesa Grande Academy and is enjoying playing with MGA’s volleyball and basketball teams in tournaments this summer. We were very privileged to have Tyler and Sophie accompany us this year on the Calimesa church mission trip to Roatan. The trip has been a huge blessing to our family for several years and we are thrilled to have been able to share it with all our children.

… Lisa McMillan received her Doc-tor of Physical Therapy degree June 12, 2016? She was honored with two awards during the graduation ceremonies at Loma Linda University: Community Service Award, chosen by the administration of the School of Allied Health for initiating physical therapy care in conjunction with street medicine outreach and the Faculty Award, chosen by the physical therapy department.

Donna Zuppan, Kindergarten coordinator, reports that the art event featured Susan Turley from Art Barn. She coached all of us in painting a beach scene that included sand, waves and a huge crab complete with “wiggle eyes” on canvas. This was a super fun event for all ages (yes, Bonnie Parker painted too!). We concluded the morning with snacks and got to take our “one-of-a-kind” paintings home! Thanks so much Pastor Isaac and Susan for this fun event! Yeah! We are so grateful for a fun Pastor that prioritizes summer fun for us all!”

…Mark Janzen, age 12, son of Bruce & Frances Janzen, recently earned a national gold medal for his high score in the National Royal Conservatory Music Development Program. He is learning to play the trumpet along with piano and pre-fers to play bluesy, jazzy, upbeat songs as well as praise songs. His favorite day of the week is the Sabbath and hates to miss church even when sick. Mark’s passions are somewhat limited by his severe ec-zema and allergies, but he has the support of his extended family, friends and a great doctor to help him through. He hopes to become a pilot like his dad and grandad someday. Besides music he loves jumping on the trampoline with his friends, playing with his dog, Champ, working on solving his Rubik’s cubes in less than 30 seconds and going to karate class where he has recently earned his high green belt.

“UNTIL THAT DAY”Charles Howard (Bing) Brinegar

Nov 4, 1936 - June 15, 2016

Our church family is very sad to say goodbye, for now, to Dr. Bing Brinegar. He was born in La Jolla, CA, attended San Diego Seventh-day Adventist Academy and then Pacific Union College as a speech major. Bing graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1959, and after internship at the Washington Sanitarium and Hospital in Washington, D.C., he was drafted to the U.S. Army serving in Sacra-mento until 1966. He later did a fel-lowship in diabetes at the prestigious Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, MA. Except for three precious years of service at Guam SDA Clinic (1996-1999), he joined LLUMC where he practiced his specialty at the Faculty Medical Offices his entire medical career.

Bing, always a gentleman, was respected, cherished and admired by students, coworkers and patients alike. Bing’s personal relationship with his God and church remained a motivat-ing factor his whole life. He served as deacon, elder and youth director. He would often take youth groups on camping and hiking trips in the Sier-ras introducing and deepening their appreciated for “God’s Second Book.”

Bing is survived by his wife Mer-edith (Cherry Valley), brother Mack (Langdon, ND), daughter Lisa Meter (Riverside, CA), sons Jeffrey (Bea-verton, OR) and Kevin (Boise, ID); their spouses and four grandchildren. He was also loved by three stepchil-

dren, Colleen Landis, Orrin Banta (Oroville, CA), Athiah Chaudry (Brea, CA), their spouses, seven grandchildren and three great grand-children. And his loving dog, Abbey.

Private services for the family were held June 20, 2016 at Emmerson-Bartlett in Redlands; inurnment was on June 23 at Riverside National Cem-etery. A Celebration of Life is planned for the evening of Wednesday, August 17, at 6:30 pm, Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist Church, Calimesa, CA.

Marylene MorrisMarylene Morris, mother of

Kathi Wild, Karen Davidson and Judie Yakush’s aunt, passed away on May 26, 2016, just three months short of her 90th birthday. Marylene had been a member of Calimesa for four years, as she had transferred her mem-bership from Downey SDA church where she had been an active mem-ber for over 50 years. She enjoyed the sanctuary Adult Sabbath School class and appreciated the friends she had made while attending Calimesa church. For the past two years she was unable to attend for health rea-sons, but enjoyed the visits and contact from church friends. She especially was appreciative of the beautiful yellow prayer quilt that was given her two years ago and always had it nearby to cheer. The family wishes to thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers.

The Calimesa Kindergarten Class would like to invite each of you to participate in a “Random Act of Kind-ness” by filling shoeboxes for our an-nual fall project. The Kindergarten De-partment plans to participate again this year with “Samaritans Purse Shoebox for Kids Program.” Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to children who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease and famine. The shoe box gifts are an expression of sharing God’s love and promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is a great time of year for each of you to have an opportunity to get school supplies for this project as they are markedly reduced now….items such as…crayons, pencils, pencil sharpeners, markers, notepads, notebook paper and pens. Also, small toys, puzzles, small stuffed animals, balls, jump ropes, toothbrushes and soap. Recepiants are ages three and ten. The items need to fit in a shoe-box. Bring your contributions (war related items and food cannot be ac-cepted) to the Kindergarten Sabbath School classroom. For more informa-tion, contact Donna Zuppan or Isaac Kim.

While there, they swam, wakeboarded and rode inner tubes being pulled by boat drivers Dick Parker, Willy Goltz and Jenny Pederson. In total, 29 youth attended, along with a large group of parents.

Holly Wagner, 16, said “I thought that the ‘out of the classroom environ-ment’ was really awesome! Just boat-ing around the lake, watching people tube and wakeboard and being able to worship on the beach during sunset was amazing.”

Following water activities, the group welcomed in the Sabbath with a haystack dinner meal, provided by the parents, and worship on the beach. Andrew Ciccarelli, Jake Langford and Jayden Wilson played guitars as the group sang before Pastor Aren Rennacker spoke on the need for youth to be ‘light in an ever-dimming world’. The message came at a time

when the youth were preparing to feed the homeless in San Bernardino after church on Sabbath, July 23, and go on a mission trip to Los Angeles to reach out to the less fortunate from July 31-August 5. With these activities coming up, a relaxing day at the lake was still needed and appreciated for this group of teens.

Daniel Tohm, 17, commented, “I thought last Friday was awesome because we had a lot of people that could join us at the lake, hang out with friends and do water activities. The food was great and the music was the perfect touch to welcome in the Sab-bath day.”

Youth at recent babysittingnight fundraiser

Parents Night outSaturday evening, July 16, 2016,

the youth held a babysitting night fundraiser. Nineteen children were dropped off at the youth room and were entertained by the youth with games, crafts, dinner and a movie. The parents had a date night and it was a toss-up who had more fun, the youth or the kids. The ‘fundraiser evening’ made some money for the Youth’s up-coming mission trip to Los Angeles.

Friday Evening VespersOn July 22, 2016 the youth had a

vespers at Ted and Tammy Shankel’s home in Calimesa. For worship they watched Louie Giglio’s talk entitled, “How Great Is Our God”, a well-known sermon on the bigness of God and uniqueness of each of us.

Homeless FeedDuring Sabbath School, July 23,

2016, the youth prepared sack lunches and hand written notes for some of the homeless at Seccombe Lake Park in San Bernardino. They left after church to pass out the sack lunches, which included personal handwritten notes and bottles of water. The youth enjoyed interacting with their new ac-quaintances and are planning on doing similar events in the future.

Fundraiser for LA Mission Trip

The funds are slated for a mission trip to Los An-geles July 31-August 5. During this trip the youth are planning different outreach projects in the city each day and to experience the various cultures that reside in Los Angeles.
