COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to: 1. List the common features and pitfalls of patient classification systems including GRASP , Evalysis, Clairvia, APACHE; 2. Compare and contrast the nursing process with task lists gener- ated by the EHR and their impact on classifying your patient; 3. Recognize the difference between staffing plans and mandated explicit minimum nurse-to-patient ratios with staffing up, based on the individual patient acuity and the impact on patient and nurse outcomes; 4. List the critical indicators on a valid patient classification tool that RNs should include in their assessment and rationale when demanding additional staffing to meet patient needs; 5. Discuss individual and collective strategies and the resources available to support RNs in their role as patient advocates. COURSE DESCRIPTION Patient classification systems (PCS), also known as patient acuity systems, have been in use since the late 1980s. They were origi- nally adapted from industrial time and motion models to manage workloads by identifying and quantifying repetitive tasks and patient needs that can be standardized, measured and timed. This course will review the limitations of these systems which are hostile to the interests of patients. The purpose of the patient classification/ acuity tool is to determine individual patient needs and care require- ments, while utilizing standards mandated by laws and regulations. The PCS incorporates the long standing and critical five point sci- entific patient care model (nursing process) which codifies that the RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and patient advocacy of each patient. The tool places heavy emphasis on the clinical, scientific and technical components of patient care being mindful of the patient’s response to disease/ illness, complications, as well as the patient’s response to the treat- ment prescribed. RNs must exercise independent competent clini- cal judgment at all times in determining their patients’ individual needs and care requirements and must do so exclusively in the interest of their patients. Patient classification systems (PCs), also known as patient acuity systems, have been in use since the late 1980s. they were origi-nally adapted from industrial time and motion models to manage workloads by identifying and quantifying repetitive tasks and patient needs that can be standardized, measured and timed. this course will review the limitations of these systems which are hostile to the interests of patients. the purpose of the patient classification/acuity tool is to determine individual patient needs and care require-ments, while utilizing standards mandated by laws and regulations.

the PCs incorporates the long standing and critical five point sci-entific patient care model (nursing process) which codifies that the rN is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and patient advocacy of each patient. the tool places heavy emphasis on the clinical, scientific and technical components of patient care being mindful of the patient’s response to disease/illness, complications, as well as the patient’s response to the treat-ment prescribed. rNs must exercise independent competent clini-cal judgment at all times in determining their patients’ individual needs and care requirements and must do so exclusively in the interest of their patients.
