2CCCSS: What are they? The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With Americans fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy (CCSI, 2010).

Fewer, clearer, higher standards is the mantra of the entire common core project.

6CCCSS: Why do they exist? The American Diploma Project, a collaboration of business, state-level K-12, and higher education leaders, wanted to develop standards at the juncture of high school and college.

Analyses of the K-12 proficiency standards and major exams (ACT, SAT and college placement tests) resulted in the American Diploma Project Benchmarks, a foundational document for the Common Core.

The initial common standards were drafted by English and math experts from across many states and differ significantly from the current framework, in that there is an emphasis upon what students need to know in order to be successful in college, rather than a longer list of what they should know the basis for the current standards.

Parents, educators, researchers and content experts across 48 states and the District of Columbia collaborated to first create the College and Career Readiness Standards in K-12 English language arts and math which later became the Common Core.

They provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.
