Films were starting to be made in Los Angeles because of the nice moving makin weather

The count of monte cristo (1908) outside scenes where filmed in L.A.

In the Sultan’s Power (1908) was the first movie completely filmed there

The Roman (1908), Carmen(1908) & many more to come

DeMille & Griffith became iconic Hollywood directors

During the 1920’-1930’s major film studios were establishing themselves: Twentieth Century-Fox, Paramount, & Columbia

• Their stores were the special targets for looting and arson

populist and antigovernment

• In modern time the most significant environmental wake up call was the Santa Barbara oil spill

• January 28,1969• When an oil drilling

platform 5 miles off shore of California malfunctioned

• Creating a sea of ooze that extended 35 miles in diameter and polluted 20miles of the Santa Barbara Coast

• Spurred environmental groups to militant action
