An attempted abduction of a 12 year old girl took place at Entre Naranjos on Sunday afternoon.

The girl had just left her group of friends, to go home, when a Moracan looking man tried to drag her into the back of his white van, possibly a Peugeot Partner.

The young girl managed to fight him off and run away and although her parents contacted the police, who arrived at the scene quickly, the assailant had already disappeared.

It seems that the man had been noticed the previous day, sat in his van, using a mobile telephone near to the play area.

The girls mum asked the Sol Times to ensure that children and parents alike are aware of the possible danger and need to be on their guard.

The mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella (pictured) announced on Saturday afternoon that the city council would “never again” hire out any of its venues for macrofiestas like the Halloween party held in the Madrid Arena on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, which left three 18 year olds dead and left two more young girls in a critical condition in hospital.

“Never again, while I am mayor, will the city council lease any of its buildings for this type of event”, said Botella in a press conference this afternoon.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure that this city never sees another tragedy like this one,” she continued, adding that the city council would assist the police in any way necessary in their investigation into the incident. She also said that the Madrid authorities would begin legal processings against the event organisers, Diviertt S.L., if they were shown to be responsible for the tragedy. “The risk is too great when so many young people get together in an enclosed space with too much

alcohol available. I don’t want to see another event like this. Nothing is more important than human life”, she stated.

“Today is a day of mourning for Madrid and for the whole of Spain. We are all hugely affected by what happened,” said the mayor, who read out the names of the three fatal victims and the two seriously injured young girls, conveying her condolences to their families.

Furthermore, she said that the city council had accepted the opposition’s request to set up a political commission to look into the changes necessary to ensure that “an incident like the sad one on Thursday night does not repeat itself,” adding: “We want maximum transparency”.

There has been increasing criticism of the lack of security at Wednesday night’s event. Botella confirmed that there had been an official, a seargent and 14 police officers on duty at the entrance and along a 50m perimeter from the entrance. A further 24 officers were deployed after the tragedy had occurred. Inside the venue, private security guards had been employed and there were no reported incidents until the stampede just after 4am.

The authorities are still trying to establish whether or not the permitted number of tickets had been surpassed and exactly how many people were inside the venue when the stampede occurred.

When asked by members of the press whether the medical team on site was adequate for an event of this type, Botella said this was the reponsibility of the organisers, since it was a private event.

rajoy optimistic about economic GROwTh IN 2014

Prime minister Mariano Rajoy has insisted that “there will be economic growth in 2014 in Spain”.

In an interview with Cadena Cope, Rajoy said he firmly believes that 2013 will be better than 2012 and that in 2014 there will be economic growth, based on the fact that the economy has fallen less than expected this year and fewer jobs will be lost than had initially been estimated.

Rajoy said he understood people’s discontentment with the high levels of unemployment and the effect on domestic economies of the government’s decisions, like tax increases, and said he’d like to be able to “reverse the situation, at some point in the future” with respect to some of the measures taken to correct the deficit.

“We would like to be able to lower income tax in 2014,” he said. “I hope to be able to do so”.

The Prime minister confirmed that he had

no intention of increasing taxes any further in 2013 and that he would not lower civil servants’ salaries either. However, he said he had not yet taken a decision with regard to pensions, and is waiting for the CPI results in November, on which pensions are usually calculated.

Rajoy also mentioned his dislike for the “euro per prescription” measure adopted in Catalonia and Madrid, saying that it failed to treat people “equally” and made people in those areas “pay twice” for their medication. He said he intended to negotiate this measure with the authorities in Catalonia and Madrid, but that if he did not reach a satisfactory conclusion, was prepared to take the matter to the Constitutional Court.

an indefinite strike today in protest over the 450 million euro debt the regional government has with them.

From November 5th onwards, two in every three pharmacies will be closed each day, on rotation, until the debt is settled.

Pharmacists argue that the regional authorities have brought the strike upon themselves, by leaving pharmacies in a “dramatic situation which has forced them to close indefinitely”.

The regional government of the Comunidad Valenciana owes pharmacies five and a half months worth of prescription payments.

Last week they settled half of their April debt and half of their May debt using funds from the Reginal Liquidity Fund (FLA).

“This move leaves us back where we were, since on Wednesday we’ll be adding another month’s worth to the ongoing debt”, complained the pharmacists.

This could be the last ‘All Saints’ long weekend in Spain if the Council of Ministers, hoping to increase productivity in the Spanish economy, agree to get rid of this longstanding fiesta when they debate next year’s official calendar later today.

A year ago, Mariano Rajoy announced his intention to get rid of the infamous ‘puentes’ whereby Spaniards add random days off to official fiestas in order to join them up to the nearest weekend. He proposed moving all official fiestas to the nearest Monday - not unlike Bank Holidays in the UK - except for those more deeply rooted in Spanish society, in an attempt to improve Spain’s competitivity.

Leaked information about today’s Council of Ministers debate suggests that the Todos los Santos (All Saints) fiesta on November 1st could be moved or removed altogether, but that the Purísima fiesta on December 8th would be maintained. The fiesta de la Constitución (Constitution Day), traditionally held on December 6th, is

likely to either be removed altogether or moved to the nearest Monday to avoid the frequent custom of joining it up to the Purísima to create a ‘macropuente’ at the start of December.

August 15th would also remain a national holiday, as requested by the tourism industry.

Fiestas such as San José (St Joseph’s Day) on March 19th and the fiesta de Santiago (St James’ Day) on July 25th could be moved permanently to the nearest Monday. These changes would primarily affect Valencia and Galicia respectively.

The fiestas that are not going to be moved or removed are New Year - January 1st, October 12th - día de la Hispanidad; December 25th - Christmas Day, Good Friday and May 1st.

Any changes have to be agreed by the Autonomous Regions and put to the vote in the Congress of Deputies before they can be adopted definitively.

Seville-born Rafael, a taxi driver since 1985, has converted his taxi into the most original cab in Seville. A year and a half ago, his six-year-old daughter Alicia said she wanted his taxi to be different from all the rest. No sooner said than done.

Alicia now says she is really “proud” of Rafael and his taxi. “She wants to show it to all her friends”, her father told the a journalist from 20minutes.es, who came across it by accident on the way to a meeting.

There is not a single inch of the dashboard, the seats, the sides or the five doors which is not covered with smiley faces,

soft toys or stickers of some cartoon character or other.

Rafael wants his taxi to be full of colour and happiness so that children who climb aboard can forget their problems for a while - he has offered free taxi rides to and from the doctors or the hospital for children with cancer.

He says he has had first-hand experience of the disease - in his family “there have been cases” - and is aware of the importance of keeping children’s spirits up and making them smile when things get tough.

But this is not all he is doing to help. Rafael is also offering free transport to families with no income and children, elderly or sick people to care for: “We all need to do our bit to help those who are worst off,” he said.

f5 figHter jet pilot dies in training accident

The pilot of a Spanish air force F5 fighter plane has died this morning and another person has been injured in an accident close to the Talavera la Real air base in Badajoz this morning.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the other person injured when the two-seater F5 crashed, was a student under instruction from the pilot. No information about the severity of his injuries has been released, but it is known that he has suffered multiple traumas and his condition is being stabilised in the intensive care unit at the Hospital Infanta Cristina in Badajoz

The Spanish air force considers the F5 to be the ideal teaching plane for the Escuela de Talavera la Real and is currently investigating the accident. Initial hypotheses suggest there was an engine failure. The F5 has ejector seats and Ministry of Defence investigators whether the pilot and his student had time to activate them.

Chinese bazaar and restaurant owners have hit out at the bad press they say they receive particularly following a recent mafia bust in Madrid.

Store owners closed their premises all day on Saturday on the Cobo Calleja industrial estate in Fuenlabrada in the outskirts of the capital – as well as in other parts of the country – to put across the collective message: “We are not all criminals.”

One of the spokespersons for the Madrid-based association of Chinese traders, Yenong Chen – a law student at Getafe university – says he and his colleagues have lost up to 70 per cent of their trade, especially from Spanish customers, since the mafia bust in October.

“We want to draw Spanish society’s attention,” says Chen, “and make them change their perception of Chinese people as a closed, insular community.

“We are a community of emigrants, just as the Spanish have been in decades past, and we have come to their country to earn a

living in an honourable manner and involving all the necessary sacrifices.”

The largest shut-down in Europe of Chinese business premises, Saturday’s closure will have affected profits even more, but was ‘necessary’, Chen explains.

“We just could not carry on like this – sales have fallen dramatically, and we need to change our public image,” he adds.

As for whether any members of the association got wind of the mafia operation which hit the headlines nearly three weeks ago, Chen said nobody had noticed anything out of the ordinary.

“They just seemed to be going about their business, and it was a great shock when we all found out,” he reveals.

The association’s other spokesperson, Xia Linmei, also has a shop on the industrial estate and she says the mafia arrests had ‘enormously’ affected the livelihoods of Chinese traders in the area.

Government spokesman retaliates to Javier Bardem’s criticisms

Bond villain Javier Bardem’s criticism of the reigning PP government has attracted a hostile response from the party’s congress spokesman, Rafael Hernando, who says: “All that’s rich coming from a millionaire who lives in Miami.”

Bardem (pictured) said in a recent press interview that the unacceptably-high unemployment levels in Spain were ‘very convenient’ to the government, since it allowed them to

impose ‘terrible’ working conditions.

He says the government “has a total lack of any commitment to the social and public systems.”

To this, Hernando retaliated on Twitter by stating: “You’d have to be a ‘great villain’, and not just on screen, to claim that so much unemployment is convenient to the government.”

Just a few weeks ago, Hernando famously called the National Court judge

Santiago Pedraz an ‘anarchist snob’ on Twitter for referring to the ‘convenient decadence of the so-called political class’ when he threw out the case involving investigations into the cause of the huge nationwide protests on September 25.

The Congress PP spokesman later excused himself on Twitter for his comments aimed at the judge for ‘any possible offence’, although he did not remove the statement from his page.

Drivers or passengers injured in a non-fault road traffic accident may be denied compensation for injuries if they were not wearing a seatbelt at the time.

A recent verdict in the European Court of Justice (ECJ) found that it did ‘not go against’ the EU right to ‘protection for accident victims’ for a third party insurance company to refuse to indemnify an innocent party for injuries where this person did not have a seatbelt on.

The case which has set the precedent at the ECJ relates to a crash between two cars in Portugal in 2004, in which the passenger of the third party vehicle suffered severe cuts to the face and head after flying through the windscreen.

Given that the driver causing the collision had no insurance, the injured man presented a claim in the sum of 65,000 euros to the Portuguese Automobile Guarantee Fund, which is similar to the Spanish Insurance Compensation Consortium or the UK’s Motor Insurance Bureau, which indemnify accident victims of uninsured motorists.

His claim was rejected based upon Article 570 of the Portuguese Civil Code on the basis that: “The damages suffered were attributable to the claimant due to his not wearing a seatbelt as required by Article 82, Section I of the Portuguese Highway Code.”

When an appeal to the High Court of Guimaraes failed, the claimant took his case to Europe, where it was rejected.

Given that this is an EU ruling, the same situation would apply in Spain.

According to the president of the Associated European Motorists (AEA), Mario Arnaldo, Spain’s Law of Public Liability and Road Traffic Insurance makes third parties causing accidents exempt from liability where the injuries or damage were due ‘uniquely to the conduct or negligence of the victim’.

Fake tous Jewellery worth two million euros seizedA massive forgery racket making and selling fake

Tous ‘teddies’ has been uncovered in Ourense. They were using a company in the city, which is in the north-western region of Galicia, as a front for creating copies of pendants, earrings and keyrings designed to look exactly like those sold by the Catalunya-based multinational jewellery and accessories firm.

These were sold at prices very similar to the originals on sale via Tous shops and concessions.Police have been on the trail of the forgers since the Tous family themselves reported having seen replicas of their own jewellery items on sale.

Officers then found three warehouses in Córdoba in southern Spain making gold versions

of the teddy bear pendants, the iconic and best-known Tous symbol.

Silver and steel versions were imported from south-east Asia, say investigators.

Nearly 31,500 items of forged Tous jewellery, plus moulds for making them have been seized, and are said to be worth around two million euros.

The operations were controlled from a head office in Ourense, and a number of people have been arrested there.

In total, 22 people have been taken in for questioning in provinces throughout the country – including Madrid, Valencia, Málaga, Sevilla, Bilbao and every province in Galicia.

WHY DO WE WEAR A POPPY?An American teacher, Moina Bell Michael, inspired

by John McCrae’s 1915 poem In Flanders Fields, began selling silk poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-Service community.

McCrae, a doctor serving in the First World War with the Canadian Armed Forces, was moved to write the poem about the poppies that grew after the aftermath and devastation of the bloody fighting in the Flanders and Picardy regions of Belgium and Northern France. “Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw, The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies

grow, In Flanders Fields,” he wrote.

In 1920 the poppy was proclaimed as the United States’ national emblem of Remembrance and the following year Madame Guerin, a Frenchwoman, sold millions to raise funds for rehabilitation in areas of France. She also sent women to London to sell poppies and persuaded Earl Haig

to adopt it for the British Legion. The first official

Poppy Day was held in Britain on 11 November 1921.

REMEMBRANCEThe Royal British Legion is the national custodian of

Remembrance, a role which ensures that those who gave their lives for peace and freedom are remembered.

In 1921, the year the Legion was formed, ‘Armistice Day’ was formally adopted as the national day of Remembrance and the Legion was charged in its Royal Charter with organising “Festivals of Remembrance, services and parades to perpetuate the memory of sacrifices made during service with Our Armed Forces in war and peace”.

In the years which have passed since then, the Legion has been responsible for organising national, regional and local ceremonies of Remembrance to reflect the nation’s concern that the human cost of war should not be forgotten. These include:

The annual Poppy Appeal. Every year the Legion mobilises a countrywide network of Poppy Appeal collectors to meet the enormous public demand for poppies - the nation’s symbol of Remembrance.

The Two Minute Silence at 11am on 11 November. The nation pauses to honour those who have given their lives for peace and freedom. The Legion has been instrumental in reinstating this in the nation’s calendar.

THE ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCE

Every year the Legion organises a festival at the Royal Albert Hall to pay tribute to all those who have given their lives for our peace and freedom. In 2010 the festival attracted more than 7 millions viewers.

The Parade and Service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday is organised by the Government and the Legion.

The Legion is also

known for proudly honouring those fallen in Service during repatriations at Royal Wootton Bassett and Carterton.

The Legion houses the Armed Forces Memorial in Staffordshire which records the names of the fallen from Afghanistan, and hosts the annual dedication of the names of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Remembrance is not just about those who fought in the two World Wars of the last century, but also about those involved in the many other conflicts worldwide since 1945 and those still fighting for peace and freedom now. It is also about learning from the past and resolving to make the world a better place to live in the future.

FIELD OF REMEMBRANCEEach November The Royal British Legion creates Fields

of Remembrance to pay tribute to all those who have bravely served in our Armed Forces and who are sadly no longer with us.

In 2010, an additional Field at Wootton Bassett was added to the traditional sites of London and Cardiff, to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives serving in Afghanistan. In 2011, a fourth Field was opened in Belfast.

Queen were a glam rock/heavy metal band that started out in 1971 after guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor who together were playing in a band called Smile , decided to form another group and joined up with a vocalist and some time piano player Farrokh Bulsara who changed his name immediately to Freddie Mercury. After a short time bassist John Deacon joined them and in 1972 they were signed to EMI Records. Their first single “Keep Yourself Alive” was released shortly thereafter but didn’t sell well. Their debut album QUEEN 1 came out in 1973 with a combination of glam and hard rock songs on it. The next album Queen 2 followed the same format but the single Seven Seas of Rye that came off it was a massive hit and people were beginning to take notice of the rock band with the flamboyant lead singer.

It wasn’t till 1974 that they would make it big with their third album Sheer Heart Attack. It went to number two in the UK and the album’s single “Killer Queen” became the band’s first US hit, just missing the US top ten. They also started to make a name for themselves, especially Mercury who early on would always be satin-clad and was one great showman on stage with his theatrics. He also had one hell of a voice too.

It was the 1975 release of the masterpiece A Night at the Opera which would make them superstars. The album would go to number five in the US, but in Britain it went to number one and stayed there for nine weeks. The album had a little bit of everything including the seven minute single “Bohemian Rhapsody”, a mini opera written by Mercury. Before release the band were unsure about how people would react to a seven minute single so played it to close friend and DJ Kenny Everett who loved it and told them to keep it exactly how it is. It is the one rock opera that truly sounded like an opera, even with May’s great heavy metal guitar riffs. With many vocal overdubs, hard drumming, mellow piano, the song became their fans most loved. They also put together one fine video for the song, which in the pre MTV days wasn’t really done too often. No cost was spared for the song and it took a month to complete. But A Night At The Opera also had other great tunes on it and all the band’s members helped in writing several of them including Deacon’s “Your My Best Friend”, which was perfect for Mercury’s voice, and Taylor’s heavy metal lead vocal, drums a pounding “I’m in Love With My Car”.

The next album, A Day at the Races, released in 1976 was another hit and included the single, “Somebody to Love”. Then in ‘77 the release of News of the World went top ten with its double A sided “We Will Rock You”, written by May, and Mercury’s “We Are the Champions”. “Champions” was supposedly a gay rights song that was pretty much overtaken and still today used as an anthem for champion sports teams worldwide. In 1978, still more success came Queen’s way with the release of Jazz with yet one more

double a hit single, “Fat Bottomed Girls” and “Bicycle Race”.

Queen was at the peak of their popularity as they entered the decade of the 80s. The Game was released in early 1980 and became their first US number one album. It also contained four hit singles, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” an Elvis like song, the somewhat disco sounding “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Play the Game”. A fourth song “Save Me” was another British hit. For whatever reasons, this would be the last real big Queen album in the States and as the eighties went on they seem to fade there. But back home in the UK things still were going strong. “Under Pressure”, recorded with David Bowie went number one in Britain in 1981 and in ‘84 they went to number two on the UK charts with “Radio Gaga”. Then they played a great show at the Live Aid benefit concert in 1985. In ‘86, A Kind of Magic sold great in the UK and the rest of Europe, but it failed to sell at all in the States. The same fate was to come to 1989’s The Miracle. 1991’s Innuendo did a little better in the US, peaking at number 30.

But by early 1991, the end was near for the band. Mercury was gravely ill with AIDS, although his fans didn’t have a clue at first. Later in the year stories started to go around about his health and on November 22, he issued a statement confirming he had AIDS. He died just two days later. Mercury who was known for throwing big expensive parties would be honoured by the surviving Queen members and his friends in one last Queen Gig. It was held at London’s Wembley Stadium on May 20 1992 and televised worldwide. Featuring such guest artists as David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, Annie Lennox, Def Leppard and Guns N’ Roses, the concert raised millions for the Mercury Phoenix Trust, which was established for AIDS awareness. Also at this time the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” was reissued to also raise money for AIDS research projects, and soared to the top of the British charts. The song also climbed to US number 2 after being featured in the movie Wayne’s World (it had originally reached US number 9 in January of 1976).

Surprisingly, there would be one last studio album issued by Queen. In 1995 May, Taylor and Deacon got together and added new music to backing tapes of vocal tracks that Mercury had recorded on his death bed. The album, Made in Heaven received mixed reviews. But like so many other Queen albums, it sold real well and the surviving band members did a grand job in putting it together. A fitting tribute to Freddie Mercury a genuine rock legend.

We took advantage of a sunny Friday Morning to take the opportunity to have a photoshoot after rehearsal for our upcoming show ,Happily Ever After? which is taking place at The Cardinal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio on November 29th and 30th and December 1st. The show tells the tale of what happens 25 years after Cinderella ‘s fairy tale wedding to Prince Charming. The show features lots of music and comedy as you would expect from the group that brought you Ancient Grease in May of this year,

Greenlands Bowls Club, recently had the privilage to host test matches between Spain and Portugal. As a warm up, the 2 countries played the host club, with Greenlands ending up worthy winners against Portugal, whilst it was role reversal against a strong Spanish side, who came out on top. The test match went the way of form, with Spain winning comfortably against a disappointing Portuguese side.

Just as importantly, the club Tues and Thurs leagues reached a conclusion. In the Tues fixed mat & jack league, the winners of their respective section played in the final, where the pairing of Brian Miller & Graham Bater beat Dave Thompson & Tony French. Winners of the Thurs 2/3 wood league were Tony French, Steph Taylor & Penny Tomkins, with the team of Dave Webb, Pat Wray & Jill Parker taking the runners up spot.

Now on to some SABA league business. In div A, the Maples were away at Emerald Isles, where the Titans certainly lived up to their name. Far from providing scrummy maple syrup, things turned somewhat sour for the gang, with the exception of these little sweeties: Sheila Stead, plus Phil & Angie Goodfellow 20-14. In the other div A match, rearranged to Tues afternoon,

the Sycamores were at home to San Mig Meteors. Although they lost 5-9, they put up a spirtited performance against a strong SM side. Muy bien: Joan Oliver, Eileen Merrick, Jill Parker 26-15. Marina Beardsall, Jack Redfern, Alan Brown 19-16. Keith Page, Jim Oliver, Brian Miller 14-14. Over at San Luis, the Chestnuts were involved in a hard fought 8-6 victory over the hosts. Winning on 3 rinks, they also had more shots than the Trekkers, as these point scorers led the celebrations: Janet Webb, Brian Hewett, Eric Thomas 17-16. Terry Lawton, Charles Langlois, Graham Watt 21-7. Helen Langlois, Mike Cassidy, Glyn Inwood 32-12.

Fresh from their victory over auntie (BBC), the winter leaguers went one better over at Bonalba. An emphatic 10-0 victory, was made possible by these guys & dolls: Lyn Greenland, Bobbie Sims, Steve Cantley, Bill Pain 15-11. Sue Johnson, Mike Veale, Barry Collins, Dave Greenland 21-7. Ronnie Cairns, Tom Hill, Angie Goodfellow, Derek Toozer 24-5. Gail Watson, Wendy Latham, Fred Willshire, Barry Latham 28-13.

Southern league matters are next on the agenda. In div 1, the Oaks hosted a strong Vistabella Lanzadores, and going into the last few ends were well down. But you can’t keep a good team down, and a late flurry ensured that not only were there results on

3 rinks, but a superior shots difference of only 2 shots, gave them an 8-6 victory. Phew, that was close: Jeannie Clements, Lyn Greenland, Dave O’Sullivan 18-15. Gail Watson, Fred Willshire, Barry Latham 21-9. Mike Veale, Ronnie Cairns, Steve Cantley 18-15. Also in div 1 was the Elms v Cavaliers fixture at Emerald Isles, although the result didn’t quite go to plan! Only 2 points were gained courtesy of this winning rink: Cas Thomas, Florence Edwards, Mike Edwards 20-13. Whilst the Oaks were toasting their victory, the Cedars were entertaining an experienced La Marina Seagulls side in an afternoon div 3 encounter. They too were on top form, winning on 3 and drawing on 1 rink, plus a superior shots difference of 108-93, gave them a well deserved 9 points. Get in there: Nadine Bater, Eileen Merrick, Jack Redfern 21-13.

Despite almost a days play lost due to torrential rain, the recent Indalo invitation rinks saw 2 Greenlands team progress to the latter stages. Cas Thomas, Florence Edwards, Mike Thomas & Mike Edwards lost to Lyn & Dave Greenland, plus 2 players from Javea in the semis, who in turn lost to a combined team of Indalo & Javea players in the final.

Fifth Race Day

The fifth day of the SAMM Autumn Race Series was held on Sunday 4th November. The race took place from the CAR Sailing Centre at Los Narejos on the Mar Menor. It was a blustery morning with a very strong south westerly wind. Seven boats started on the course of three laps. However there were several casualties of the strong winds. The first was the third buoy which was dragged by the

strong winds off its anchor which was lost. Then, because this buoy had drifted towards the shore Julian Pering and Carl Vogt in Conny misjudged the distance and were blown onto the reef, unfortunately because they needed help from the committee boat, they were disqualified. At the same time Shoestring Tres was also misled into going too close to the reef and was caught but Vernon and John managed to free it without

help and they finished in fourth place. Meanwhile Mick Burgess in Sea Hopper suffered a broken rudder and was blown ashore further up the beach. As the wind speed was increasing it was judged unsafe to continue so the race was reduced to one lap. The time between the first and second was very close and the results of the four boats which finished were as follows (on the corrected times):-

Torrevieja’s ‘Palacio de la Música’ is the venue for a special Saint Andrew’s Day celebration which will bring together various Celtic cultures. This unique event will commence at 19.00h on MONDAY 19th November in the auditorium of the ‘Music Palace’ and admission is completely free!!! (Local Alzheimer’s association, AFA, will be on hand to receive voluntary donations from the audience).

Presented in both Spanish and English, this meeting of Celtic cultures will commence with a selection of Scottish music offered by the “Iberian Celts” playing the great highland bagpipes accompanied by the classic flute and drum.

The Spanish contingent is next up on the stage, this time from the “Galician Gaita Group”. These bagpipers, representing Spain’s most north-westerly autonomous community where these Celtic roots are shared, will offer a selection of their own traditional music.

A break from the sounds of the pipes

comes next, in the form of Maurice and Alma with their now-almost-famous string puppets. Maurice and Alma’s extremely entertaining puppet theatre has most recently been seen in Torrevieja streets as part of a local campaign to boost commerce in the town centre.

A ‘jamming session’ with Spaniard, Mota Sanchez on harmonica, accompanying Scottish piper, Wille Hume is up next on the bill before the haunting voice of Irish Celt, Aoife Leddy accompanied on guitar by Phil Ketley, offer a selection of traditional Irish and Scottish folk songs.

The ‘grand finale’ of this St. Andrew’s, Celtic spectacular will see the “Gaitas Rusador Band”, Spanish pipers from San Vicente, Alicante take to the stage to offer a selection of their own, special style of music but with an unusual, modern style.

Fashion Show held on September 21st, was a fantastic success with almost 200 Ladies in attendance. A wonderful selection of women´s clothes fitting every shape

& size were first modelled & then sold, including selective Designer & Good as New outfits. Just over 1000€ was raised, GOmaD personally wishes to thank all those who put their heart & soul into organising & to those who attended. A Third Fashion Show is being planned.

Another public thank you to ´Mazarron Bowls Club´ for their generous donation of 175€, raised by holding a special competition.

Over the last month GOmaD has been attending a series of Ćrisis Meetings´ held

by Cruz Roja, Social Services & other Spanish Associations, these were primarily called due to; 85 children in the Puerto & 40 in Mazarron being without School Curriculum Books - GOmaD also has 23 children listed. We also discussed the increasing number of people requiring aid & how we can work together to share this load.

GOmaD has purchased Basic School Material up to the value of 250€ thanks to the very generous donations from those within our Community.

Unfortunately donations can no longer be left at the Business Centre Camposol A, due to the fitment of a Pharmacy, we are in search of an alternative drop-off but for now please contact Amanda on C´Sol A´ - 634 357 137, drop-off at Cultural/Social Centre B´ on Fridays 12 - 2.30pm, Calida Radio, Pto de Mazarron (opp ´La Cumbre Hotel´) or the Shop when open.

MEMORY LOSS CAN START AS EARLY AS YOUR 30’SThe average age we

experience memory loss is 57 – but it can begin as early as our thirties, new research has revealed.

In an online poll, 11 per cent of respondents said they had started to notice their memory suffering in their 40s. Six per cent had noticed it in their 30s.

The survey also revealed that the over-50s are plagued by the fear of memory loss and many have frequent and embarrassing memory lapses.

The research, published to coincide with the UK’s first ever online Memory Training course, also revealed that half of over-50s have been embarrassed about forgetting simple things.

Other people’s names came top of the list at 37 per cent, followed by keys and glasses at 19 per cent.

More unusual examples included not remembering the word for ‘apple’, how to spell ‘hour’ and names of colours.

Some people even admitted to leaving loved ones behind in shops.

While these memory lapses can be seen as humorous mishaps or plain old forgetfulness, the research does reveal that 31 per cent of people are concerned about losing their memory now and a further 31 per

cent are concerned that it could become a problem for them in the future.

According to the research, the 92 per cent of over-50s do try to keep their minds and memory active.

The survey of more than 1,000 adults aged over 50 was commissioned by adult learning website Love to Learn.

It has teamed up with former world memory champion Jonathan Hancock, who is the course’s online tutor.

He said: ‘Brilliant memory is something you do, not something you own. The brain is a muscle and changes according to how you exercise it and what you practise. Everyone can train their memory, and can surprise themselves with how much they can improve it.’

The course claims to deal with different areas of memory training from techniques used by the Greeks and Romans to modern methods for remembering names, important dates, numbers, lists and ideas.

f1 car lets you take control of HigH-speed ViewsFormula One fans can already catch every moment of

a thrilling race from all angles thanks to cameras tracking drivers every move.

But in future, thanks to new spherical 360 degree camera unveiled by a Norwegian firm, racing aficionados could actually interact with the footage and rotate the angle at will.

It allows the viewer to control the angle themselves using the arrows on their computer keyboard, switching from the view ahead of the car, to the right or left, or even hovering above the driver looking down at his helmet.

Red Bull Racing, who have teamed up with the camera’s creators at Norway-based Making View, strapped one of the spherical cameras to an F1 car to showcase the technology

Viewers can interact with the camera and switch the angle at the touch of a button while playing back recorded footage of the high-speed circuit.

The clip shows the driver steering the car in a ‘donut’ manoeuvre, and the 360-degree camera allows the viewer to see mechanics rushing up to the vehicle to spray cooling foam on the tyres.

Making View’s ViewCam weighs just 600g and the firm claim it can be attached to things besides a car, including a helmet or onto an athlete’s person.

‘THE RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE’ IS NOT PROOF OF TAX RESIDENCY AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WILL BE TREATED AS A NON-RESIDENT AND 3% OF THE SALES PRICE WILL BE HELD BACK WHEN YOU SELL YOUR PROPERTY...

Q. I have sold my house. I was under the impression that I was a resident and that the 3% retention for non-residents would not be applicable, but the notary said that my residence certificate was not proof of residency and that he had to treat me as a non-resident which means that 3% of the sales price was retained and paid into the tax office . How can the resident certificate not be proof of residency?

A. What the notary is saying is correct. It is a common nasty surprise at the notary lately suffered by sellers that are not getting the correct advice prior to selling . The new resident certificates without a photograph, issued by the police, do not state you are a tax resident of Spain - what it says is that you are a resident of Europe.

To be able to be treated as a tax resident of Spain at the moment of sale, you need to provide the notary with a certificate issued by the tax office in Spain stating that they consider you a tax resident of Spain. This needs to be requested in advance of going to the notary by your solicitor or yourself to avoid the 3% retention. Some notaries will also accept as proof of residency your Spanish tax returns.

If you are thinking of selling, it is important to find out from the tax office well in advance if your status is that of a resident or non resident, and the certificate issued by them needs to be taken to the notary the day of signature.

P.S. If you are a non resident, do not forget it is obligatory to file a non-resident tax returns, and that the tax man has created a task force to go after those that have not been paying (and they are sending out letters since November 2011).

homes in the Puerto, full of tales of woe – many tears & prayers were shared as people struggle with everyday life. A young man who lived in a car, with a mountain of problems, became so desolate he tried to take his own life. Single mothers balancing severe health & financial worries, one saying she would “rather steal than lose her home”, others have resorted to extreme measures to earn money e.g. prostitution. French officials have cast doubt on a report likely to recommend sharp cuts in public spending before it has even been published, according to a report by the BBC.

The report continues:The government-commissioned report into French

competitiveness, due to be issued later on Monday, was written by former aerospace group EADS chief executive Louis Gallois.

Any “shock therapy” proposals, however, have already been ruled out by the Socialist government. The report was commissioned in July.

“We cannot simultaneously restore public finances and impose a competitiveness shock,” a government source told Reuters news agency before the report’s publication.

Mr Gallois was asked by President Francois Hollande to investigate what was holding France back, as part of a “competitiveness pact”, looking at why the French economy has fallen behind rivals such as Germany and suggesting reforms that could help address the gap.

France accounts for just 13% of eurozone exports, compared with 17% a year ago, and its unemployment rate stands at 10.2%,

as against Germany’s 6.9%.The report’s expected proposals, which have been widely

reported in the French media, are likely to include slashing the social contributions paid by employers by 20bn euros (£16bn), as well as those paid by employees by 10bn euros.

To recoup some of these lost funds, the report is expected to suggest increasing VAT, as well as payments into a separate social levy that affects pensions and workers’ pay.

However, the government has already made clear that it will not contemplate shifting more of the tax burden on to households when it has already drastically cut spending, in a bid to reduce its 2013 deficit to 3% of gross domestic product (GDP) from 4.5%.

An indication of the report’s likely reception came from Social Economy Minister Benoit Hamon: “This report is a contribution. It’s the government that governs,” he said.

The government’s official response to the report is due on Tuesday.

uk serVice sector growtH ‘weakest in almost two years’Activity in the UK service sector grew at its slowest pace in almost two

years in October, a survey has suggested - as reported by the BBC. The PMI services index from Markit/CIPS fell to 50.6 from 52.2 in September. Any score above 50 indicates growth.

Growth in new business eased, while employment in the sector fell for the second consecutive month, Markit said. The figure was a reminder of the tough underlying economic conditions despite last month’s better-than-expected growth figures, it added. Official figures showed that the UK economy grew by 1% between July and September, ending a nine-month long recession.

“The latest UK services PMI data provide a warning to those who saw the strong growth in the GDP in the third quarter as symbolising the start of a strong and speedy economic recovery,” said Markit economist Andrew Harker.

“The expectation among firms is for activity to improve over the

coming year, but the road to full economic recovery still looks to be a long one.”

Last week, the PMI survey for manufacturing indicated that the sector shrank in October for the sixth month in a row, while the survey of the construction sector found that while output was slightly higher, new work and employment shrank.

Analysts said the weaker-than-expected services PMI reading increased the possibility that the Bank of England might increase its programme of quantitative easing (QE), which has now reached a level of £375bn, when its monetary policy committee (MPC) meets later this week.

Under QE, the Bank buys government bonds, hoping to create beneficial knock-on effects for the economy.

“It does raise the risk of further QE from the Bank. On balance, though, we think it probably won’t, given the risk of inflation,” said George Buckley at Deutsche Bank.

“What it does tell us is that while there have been some mixed messages, more positive than negative, we’re not seeing a very fast recovery at all.”

Vicky Redwood, at Capital Economics, said: “The MPC pays a lot of attention to this survey and this Thursday’s meeting now looks an even closer call than before.

“Given the stronger near-term outlook for inflation, we think that the chances of more QE this week are just below 50-50.”

Separately, a report suggested that the UK would be the fastest-growing major economy in Europe in the next two years. The eurozone debt crisis would drag the bloc into a second year of recession, the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) said.

While the eurozone economy would contract by 0.4% in 2013, the UK economy would grow by 0.8%, the think tank predicted. In 2014, the CEBR said the eurozone would register growth of 0.4%, compared with the UK’s 1.4%.

Low-frills airline Ryanair has reported a rise in profits thanks to an increase in both passenger numbers and fares.

Net profit for the six months to the end of September was 596m euros ($765m; £477m), up 10% on the 544m euros the company made a year earlier. Record half-year traffic numbers and an average 6% rise in fares helped boost revenue by 15% to 3.1bn euros.

The airline also raised its full-year profit forecast to 490m-520m euros, up from 400m-440m euros.

“Our 10% profit increase in the first-half combined with traffic growth of 7% during a period of high oil prices and continuing recession/austerity in Europe was another robust result,” the airline said in a statement.

Profits exceeded the airline’s expectations due partly to strong bookings after the Olympics and lower than forecast fuel costs, it added. However, overall fuel costs rose by a quarter to 218m euros, as the average cost of oil over the period rose to $98 a barrel from $83 a barrel.

Ryanair said it expected “market conditions in Europe to remain tough as recession, austerity, high fuel costs and excessive government taxes dampen air travel demand”.

US, its filing with US regulators has shown.A BBC report indicates that the company paid $713m (£445m) in the

year to 29 September on foreign pre-tax profits of $36.8bn, a rate of 1.9%.

It is the latest company to be identified as paying low rates of overseas tax, following Starbucks, Facebook and Google in recent weeks. It has not been suggested that any of their tax avoidance schemes are illegal.

All of the companies pay considerable amounts of other taxes in the UK, such as National Insurance, and raise large sums of VAT.

Apple’s figures for foreign tax appear on page 61 of its form 10-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The form is used to summarise the performance of public companies.

It had paid a rate of 2.5% the previous year.Apple channels much of its business in Europe through a subsidiary

in the Republic of Ireland, which has lower corporation tax than Britain. But even Ireland charges 12.5%, compared with Britain’s 24%.

Many multinational companies manage to pay substantially below the official corporation tax rates by using tax havens such as Caribbean islands.

week 5No theme for this weeks show but all to play

for to reach the last 10. Opening the show were Kimberley & Pasha and their Salsa. She was sexy, sassy and steaming just how a Salsa should be. With good lifts and great lines a super opening to the show. She received 33 from the judges and 8 from me.

Next up were Lisa & Robin with a Tango. For me she was too far up in her knees so lacked the necessary staccato action for the Tango and because of this all her chasses (side close side) were skipped instead of being kept sharp and flat. For this fact I gave her a 6 and the judges awarded her 27.

Following were Richard & Erin with a Foxtrot. Oh Richard! you had a fair frame but that was about it. I have rarely seen a poorer attempt at this dance. It was ploddy, plonky with no swing, sway or glide you just walked from start to finish and got in a real mess with the choreography for half of the routine. I gave him a 4, one of my bottom 2 and the judges in bottom place with 17.

Next onto the floor were Denise & James with their Viennese Waltz. What a great performance this was. Seamless changes from solo spins to Viennese moves which was beautifully fluid and totally in character, I loved this and gave her a 10 with the judges 35 and their top position this week.

Fifth out were Victoria & Brendan with Samba, notoriously one of the most difficult dances to learn with the many different steps and rhythm changes and unfortunately it proved to be too

much for Victoria. She looked uncomfortable all the way through her performance and you could almost see the panic in her demeanour. Her body was in the wrong position for the Samba rolls and she seemed to be apologising for being on the floor - I guess the Latin is not for her! The judges scored her 23 and I gave her a 4 and one of my bottom 2.

Next up one of my favourites Lewis & Flavia dancing a Samba. Again a notorious killer dance for the celebrities but Lewis had a good try with a great range of basic Samba steps showing good hip use but for me he was a bit too cautious to fully demonstrate the carnival atmosphere for Samba. I awarded him an 8 with the judges 29.

Colin & Kristina followed with their Foxtrot which was nicely performed considering their considerable height difference. What a shame he wasn’t put with one of the taller professional girls. As a result Colin is being accused of not stepping out more but it’s because of the height that is holding him back. I gave him a 7 and the judges 27.

Next out were Nicky & Karen with their Rumba and I have to say much improved this week. Nicky was nicely in character with some nice lines, unfortunately there was very little Rumba involved in the performance so I gave him the benefit of the doubt with a 6 and the judges a 25.

Next to the floor were Fern & Artem with a Paso Doble which was far too soft with little or no attack. The music although a traditional

Paso Doble tune (for once!) was played far too slow. I gave Fern a 5 and the judges awarded 24. Next out were Michael and Natalie with a Foxtrot. I’m sorry Michael but still no improvement from last week, your bottom is still sticking out (although disguised behind your tail jacket) and you are still leading with your left arm so your frame is pushed forward with your neck poked out. Apart from that it was relatively smooth with a decent glide action but it could be so much better! I gave him 7 with the judges for me overmarking him on 31.

Closing this weeks show were Dani & Vincent and a Jive. This was danced with superb character and Jive action, one of the best I have seen in any of the series apart from Jill Halfpenny. She showed great retraction of her legs on the kicks but just missed a top score from me for not pointing her toes on the kicks.

I awarded her 9 and the judges 33.

Surprisingly in the dance off were Colin & Kristina and with them Richard and Erin. Richard managed to get through his routine successfully although still wooden. Colin & Kristina were much more rhythmical but were voted out unanimously by the judges, I totally disagreed with this result and felt it was a no contest! So be it!

Vivienne Paterson, owner of the Irish Rover bar in Torrevieja, has presented cancer charity AECC with another substantial amount of money in memory of her mother’s death from cancer four years ago. Vivienne organised a number of fundraising events at the bar, this time raising more than €600. The money was handed over to Maria Wilson, President of AECC for the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa area and will be used for AECC’s much-used subsidised cancer screening in the area.

In conjunction with other Lions Clubs on the Spanish Costas, The Lion´s Club of Mazarrón Bahia are joining with the Diabetic Association in trying to help by making more people aware of how Diabetes can be averted, or recognised and treated early, by offering free information & advice to any who think that they may be at risk. How to identify, and cope with, Diabetes types 1 & 2

The World Health Organization estimates that 246 million people worldwide have diabetes, a global epidemic that is expected to affect 380 million by 2025.

On Saturday 10th NovemberBetween 10.00am and 4.00pmStarting & finishing at the new Marina in Puerto de Mazarron.The Lions Club of Mazarrón Bahia are to hold a ‘STRIDES DIABETES AWARENESS’ SPONSERED WALK

All the money raised will go towards sending more children with diabetes to go to a special summer camp especially for children with diabetes in 2013. This summer we were only able to send two children. We would dearly love to send many more next summer.

As well as enjoying sport and fun activities, the camp provides diabetic education classes in a fun way covering subjects which are a great concern to the children, their parents and teachers whilst they are at school. More than 10% of children need to inject insulin at school. At least 19% children have suffered severe hypoglycaemia at school. Children are taught to recognise that they have hypoglycaemia and how to deal with it. As well as coping with derogatory comments from other children at school.

As one child who had attended to the camp said it was wonderful “Being able to feel like a kid again enjoying and living each experience”

from any Mazarrón Lions member, or from the Lions stall on Camposol Sector B any Friday between 11.00am and 1.00pm.. The registration fee is €5.00 each (€3.00 for under 12’s) or you can, of course, just register on the day if you don’t want to collect sponsorship .Medical personnel will be available on the day to offer various free ‘health check’ tests and, for a very small charge, (€1) blood/glucose level tests to help you to identify if you are ‘at risk’.

All registered participants will be given a commemorative Strides tee shirt to wear for the walk and a ‘Strides’ pin badge on completion of their walk. Diabetes can be deadly! Get your Registration/Sponsorship form today and help by ‘doing your bit!’ If you

do not want to walk you can still help by sponsoring others.

The rest of the world have long made the most of the enticing flavours of pumpkins

and squashes, so perhaps it’s time for British cooks to take advantages of these

brilliant autumn bounties. Now that

halloween has passed, there’s probably an abundance of

pumpkins needing to be used up!

Here’s a COUPLe OF Ideas…

Pumpkin

IngredIents:PumPkin PieIngredIents: Method

Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

Use a shop bought sweet crust pastry case, about 9 inch/23 cm diameter and 1½ inches/4 cm deep.

To make the filling, steam the pumpkin then place in a coarse sieve and press lightly to extract any excess water. Then lightly whisk the eggs and extra yolk together in a large bowl.

Place the sugar, spices and the cream in a pan, bring to simmering point, giving it a

whisk to mix everything together. Then pour it over the eggs and whisk it again briefly. Now add the pumpkin pureé, still whisking to combine everything thoroughly. Then pour the filling into your pastry case and bake for 35-40 minutes, by which time it will puff up round the edges but still feel slightly wobbly in the centre.

Then remove it from the oven and place the tin on a wire cooling rack. Serve chilled (stored loosely covered in foil in the fridge) with some equally chilled créme fraïche, but warm or at room temperature would be fine.

For the pastry:A packet of ready made

sweet short crust pastry with 40g/1½oz crushed pecans mixed in.

For the filling:450g pumpkin flesh, cut

into 1in/2.5 cm chunks2 large eggs plus 1 yolK75g soft dark brown sugar1 tsp ground cinnamon½ level teaspoon grated

nutmeg½ tsp ground allspice½ tsp ground cloves½ tsp ground ginger275 ml double cream

Method: Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onions and the garlic. Cook for 2 minutes and then add the pumpkin, chopped apples and sage.

Cook for another 2 minutes, season well and add the stock and the cider or apple juice. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the ingredients are tender.

Liquidise and serve piping hot with crusty bread.

MethodPreheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas

Heat the olive oil in a large heavy-based pan. Add the pumpkin and cook, covered, stirring gently from time to time, until the pumpkin is tender, up to one hour. Season the pumpkin with plenty of paprika, a grating of nutmeg, freshly ground black pepper and a little salt, to taste.

Add the ricotta cheese while it’s still on the heat. Stir well then remove from the heat. Cover and allow mixture to stand.

For the béchamel sauce, melt the

90ml/3fl oz extra virgin olive oil 1kg/2lb 3oz pumpkin, peeled, seeds removed, cubedPaprika, to taste Freshly grated nutmeg, to tasteSalt & freshly ground black pepper250g/9oz fresh ricotta cheese 250g/8¾oz green lasagne pasta sheets150ml/5¼fl oz milk 25g/1oz grated parmesan cheese, or vegetarian parmesan-style grating cheeseFor the béchamel sauce55g/2oz butter55g/2oz plain flour350ml/10½fl oz milk

IngredIents: butter in a small saucepan without letting it brown. Add the flour little by little, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. When the flour has evenly absorbed the butter, continue to cook, stirring, for 4-5 minutes.

Add the 350ml/10½fl oz milk a little at a time, stirring constantly to make a smooth, thick and creamy sauce.

Season.

Arrange a layer of lasagne pasta sheets in the bottom of a large ovenproof dish. Spoon over a third of the pumpkin mixture. Lay more pasta sheets over the top, followed by another layer of pumpkin and another layer of pasta, followed by a final layer of the pumpkin mixture. Finish with a layer of lasagne pasta sheets.

Pour the 150ml/5¼fl oz milk over the top and allow it to drain through to all pasta layers.

Bake for ten minutes in the preheated oven, remove and spread the béchamel sauce on top. Bake for a further 15-20 minutes or until all the milk has been absorbed by the pasta and the lasagne looks cooked and is beginning to go crisp.

Remove from the oven, sprinkle with parmesan and place back in the oven for a few minutes - take care not to burn the pasta or the béchamel on top. Serve immediately.

Hi readers, the following is a local story, I thought you would really enjoy reading this one. I’m not telling it myself this time, so over to you Danny.

My name is Danny, I’m a musician with the Dog House Blues Band and I live here in the Murcia area of Spain. I was sitting round the pool with my friends having a laugh and a drink about 9.30 on Friday night 10th August 2012, but the good mood changed rapidly when my mobile phone rang, it showed an English number. It was my family in England informing me that my Granddad George had gone to the shops at four o’ clock just over the road and had not returned. He was missing. Normally this would not be a problem but with him being in his late eighties and seeing how near the shops were it raised an immediate cause for concern.

The local Police in Lincolnshire had been contacted and extra officers had been brought in to search caravan sites, shops, markets and also to check on friends and family. They were treating it pretty seriously by then. An air sea rescue helicopter was called in to speed things up. Darkness was already drawing in, still no sign of granddad. I left my friends to go back home to book a flight back to England, I just felt I really needed to be there to help in anyway I could with the search.

In the middle of all this I suddenly remembered a story I had read in local papers in Murcia about a woman who had gone missing a few years before, this was in Bolneuevo a seaside town near the port of Mazarron in Murcia. It all came rushing back into my head. The missing woman’s name was Lesley Reid, she was a diabetic and she had been missing for a couple of days.

A clairvoyant called Carol Everett had been asked to help locate her by her family and friends. This was after extensive local searches with the families, friends, volunteers and local police with dogs who had failed to find her. Carol’s information about Lesley had then been passed on to the Police via friends and family. Within hours the police helicopter went out with a plan to use Carol’s information as a starting point for a search.

They followed her directions and very soon found Lesley exactly where her information had said, hidden on a cliff top to the west of Bolneuevo. I had known people personally who were involved in all this at the time, so I knew it was all true.

I also know Carol and her husband Mike, I see them at the local Canadas market sometimes on a Sunday morning, Carol is usually looking for plants for her garden, they are also supporters of the Dog House Band. I knew Carol would be approachable so I rang their number, even though it was late on a Friday night.

Little did I know when I did. That on another level Carol was already picking something up to do with the situation. When I rang, Mike, Carols husband answered, Carol could hear our conversation and said, “Quick hand me the phone I need to speak to him”. “ Now I understand” she said, “what has been happening to me today and yesterday”.

Carol told me she had been agitated all

evening after meeting a mutual local friend briefly that day. Another man had died recently that we all knew, a dear old man called Bruno.

Carol asked the friend, did he know when Bruno’s funeral was and also did he know anyone or if he knew if Bruno knew anyone called George. The name kept coming into her head. No, said the friend, I don’t think so. Carol told me she that she felt that the friend Bruno we all knew who had died was preparing her to help with someone called George.

As soon as I gave her my Granddads name, ‘George’ she was on the case; she instinctively put the two together. She said, “I think your granddad is confused, I think he thinks he is in the past. In the past, did he ever have an allotment or liked growing veg etc, this is what he is thinking”. I couldn’t remember this and said I would have to check with family. She said, “He isn’t far away at all, and I can see peas”. Carol asked me if peas meant anything to me, anything. Cans or frozen, I had visions of him lying in a supermarket freezer surrounded by by Birds Eye. Remember he had just left to go to the shops. “No”, she replied, “Peas in pods, he is surrounded by them in a field with them growing all around him”. I immediately passed on the information to my family in England.

By this time the search had been called off for the night. The information about not being far away, the field and the peas in the pods was passed on to the Lincolnshire police. The next morning the police helicopter was seen lowering into a field less than five hundred metres away and there was granddad. The first words he said was that he could smell peas, bringing back carols words into my mind, “I can smell peas”

After a few days in hospital to recover from his ordeal granddad George was sent home.

The whole of the family thank Carol for giving her time to us in this stressful situation. Had we not passed on this information granddad could at his age easily have been left too long in that field.

So that’s Danny’s story. This story is another example of how things just go with the telepathic link that often exists between friends, and how people help us when they have passed over. Often with signs and messages that you have to be quick and sensitive in your mind even to pick up. This gift takes practice and you can’t always get it as accurate as I would like it to be.

with the world and all of its inhabitants. I frequently assist beetles to the other side of the path, and always apologise to weeds before committing them to the hereafter.

However, when the sparrows started pinching our fruit I felt that they had overstepped the mark and abused my pacifist approach. I felt the red mist come down, and had I been able to catch them I would have smacked their little feathery bottoms and sent them on their way.

Now another of God’s creatures has awakened the demon within me – namely the wasps! I did pride myself on my Christian attitude to these apparently useless pests, but no more! They are monopolising our pool, bought, paid for and

maintained by us, and I feel that they should at the very least have the good manners to move over when I feel like a swim. But no,

they expect me to swim round

them, and they get cross and use waspish swear words if I splash too much.

I topped up their nice trap (Ugh! Is there a worse smell?) and demolished their nest, but still our pool was wall-to-wall wasps. So imagine my joy when we found the answer in Piscinas Octopus in Albox – Washing-up liquid!

In two sentences, the answer is to spray the pool surface with a small amount of dilute washing-up liquid. This breaks the surface tension, so that the wasps can’t sit on the surface, they fall in and drown.

With murderous intent I sprayed just the tiniest amount, and sat back to see the results. Within minutes the body count began. I took up my trusty net and patrolled the pool, scooping up corpses with a merry cackle, the personification of Death in a bikini.

Now, within days, we are virtually wasp-free. Either we’ve killed them all, they have learnt.

A worrying thought has just occurred to me. Suppose they plan a revenge attack?

I realised the other day that we have had two rescue cats in our house now for the last two years and the probability is that neither has ever seen a mouse.

This causes me some concern and a little guilt, because all self respecting felines, should at least know what the little blighters look like and experience the joy of chasing them.

Ozzy and Woody have had to make do with a collection of colourful knitted things obtained from the local bazaar Chino that they toss around enthusiastically, leading inevitably to yet another toy disappearing under a sofa, or sideboard. It’s become routine to move the furniture on a regular basis in order to recover a multitude of meeces and return them to the cat’s toy box.

When they first arrived as tiny street ragamuffins and only a few weeks old, we bought them an assortment of toys to occupy their attention, along with rolled up balls of tin foil and screwed up paper. In addition to this, friends would arrive and bring more interesting items – phony mice, woolly balls and squeaky things. It was all very entertaining for visitors because, our two waifs would retrieve things when thrown

and drop them at their feet ready to be thrown again. It must be a Siamese trait, because having always had these Oriental eccentrics in our lives prior to Spain, each of them has had the same retrieval instinct. Our current two may be only moggies, but with their blue eyes and coloured points, they are of definite Siamese vintage. So, t h e y

of the lounge – a sort of feline version of Toy Story.

It’s good that we don’t have house mice here, although I think I would swop an icky cucaracha for a be-whiskered ratón any day of the week, and I have to confess to a certain fondness for the little devils as long as they are not snaffling my chocolate digestives in the kitchen cupboard.

Living the country life in the UK, mice – mostly the field variety – were a fact of life. Moreover, living in a thatched house, it must have been an overwhelming temptation for them to move in once the combine harvesters got to work in the

neighbouring fields. It was never a major problem, but there were times when our two slanty eyed gato’s would come across an intruder during the night. “Friend or foe”, they would meow menacingly and not receiving a satisfactory answer, take the offender into custody.

The problem was, having detained the furry burglar; the proud duo would bring it to me unharmed at some unearthly hour of the night and feeling sorry for the poor thing I would slip out of the house and release it some

distance away. The thought often crossed my mind that the bloody thing was

probably back at the cottage before me.

On one occasion, I had just released yet another rodent into the hedgerow and was returning to my bed when suddenly headlight beams appeared on the crest of the hill. There was nowhere to hide, so I tried to look as natural as possible as a Range Rover picked me out in its headlights, before quickly accelerating away.

It’s hard to look nonchalant at 4am, with a cold mist wafting around bare skinny legs, wearing your wife’s flowery bath robe and Scooby Doo slippers.

Then there was the Haverford Mouse.

Haverford is a township in Pennsylvania where I stayed at a rambling old house that belonged to the mother of my American chum. Sharing her home with a female companion of many years standing, she welcomed a man about the house as an added security measure and the prospect of some intelligent conversation.

Unfortunately she

got me.

My room was over the kitchen, the stairs to which were directly outside my bedroom door. Then one night I was aware of a disturbance below and being a responsible sort of chap, I tippy toed down the stairs to investigate. The rustling sound that I had heard grew louder and seemed to emanate from the open larder, so I hit the lights and as I did so, a whiskery brown head popped out of the top of a jumbo box of corn flakes and peered at me. Mousy had been having a high old time and his cheeks were bulging with Kellogg’s finest. I didn’t have the heart to grass him up, but I discreetly disposed of the breakfast cereal the next day.

For the remaining months of my stay, my new little buddy Hank would visit me in my bedroom most nights and squat on my bedside table as I watched TV - both of us gnawing on brownies and watching Tom and Jerry cartoons.

the freedoms offered by the new republic of alqueria include the freedom to lie, misrepresent and libel. the perfect environment for a daily tabloid newspaper to exist and alqueria hoy was born. a daily newspaper published weekly however, not a lot happens in the village.

el baboso, a semi-literate and thoroughly disgusting man was the natural choice for editor. his only redeeming feature is a flair for inventiveness. a skill much needed if the pages are to be filled with anything other than mundane twaddle. to satisfy both the newcomers and hill people a dual headline system had to be employed. hill people on the left, newcomers to the right.

a recent round of redundancies at rodriquez’s olive mill produced the following two headlines.

the hill people’s read. ‘rodriquez sacks twelve at olive mill. men forced to steal as wives forage in refuse bins. daughters are forced into prostitution while several children have been taken into community care. the latest redundancies push the unemployment rate in alqueria to 75%.’

the newcomer’s headline about the same story reads. ‘rodriguez streamlines olive mill. it’s a good deal for alqueria.’

horacio stranglardeganso, landlord of the bar la casa devante writes the paper’s agony column. his advice for apparently all requests for help is to drink strong liquor, preferably in his establishment until one’s head spins. advice eagerly taken up by a sizeable portion of alqueria’s population. manuela’s advice to the love-lorn had to be dropped. even el baboso wouldn’t take the risk of publishing, no matter how imaginative her advice is.

the small ads are the usual attempts to devoid oneself of household rubbish by demanding extortionate prices. the weather forecast was simply reprinted from last year’s el país. this proved so accurate that a team from the meteorological office in the Uk was sent on a fact finding trip.

someone somewhere decided to include a daily prayer. When one lives in alqueria one certainly needs a daily prayer or some form of benevolent intervention. the village priest, known locally as sacerdote del semblante lánguido is a tall cadaverous man, hook-nosed and sombre to the point of being utterly depressed. his first attempt to write the daily devotion was an utter disaster. he used the paper’s platform to announce he was a closet existentialist. having ‘come out’ he now spends his time

sitting in cafés with his head in his hands depressing everyone with his view of the meaningless universe.

as alqueria moves into complete and autonomous statehood its free press can proudly take its place amongst the tabloids of europe

Almeria has long regarded itself as the poor man of Andalucía; the road network for example is poor when compared to the more prosperous western parts of the region. Wherever there is damage to roads and bridges after ‘that storm’ there are just cones or if lucky there are a few local tractor drivers working or leaning on a shovel smoking a fag. The A334 is normally the vein that enables business and leisure interests to course through keeping the Almanzora Valley alive but the operation to rescue it is painfully slow.

The diversions around Arboleas have been in place for four years and the unfinished bypass slowly gets washed away whenever it rains. The cost in lost productivity surely outweighs the 22 million Euros it will cost to finish the Albox section. The last section to connect to the Ballabona junction is nearly 3 years past even its starting date.

The 22km Sorbas section of the mythical high speed rail link will soon be finished (except the ballast, rails, power, signals and the trains) to become the most expensive footpath in Andalucía. Almeria City has been waiting decades to connect the port to the rail system and to build a new station for the bustling city but a recent announcement put those hopes back another 20 years.

The grandly titled Autovia de Mediterraneo or E15/A7 which should stretch unbroken from Rome to Cadiz reverts to a donkey path going west around Adra and Almeria City is still without speedy access to Malaga. Instead it’s a long cold drive north on the A92 to Granada then west to Antequera and then south on the new AP46 toll road so completing the

third side of a very uneconomic square. The AP46 seems as much a white elephant as our own

E15 to Cartagena; it’s largely empty as it runs parallel to the more than adequate A45. Now, however, the fat cats from Madrid can drive more quickly to their summer holidays and by paying a toll can completely avoid the proletariat masses who tend to use the other road Seriously though it’s worth paying the 3.15€ toll as it’s a massive feat of mountain goat engineering as it skims the mountain tops via 15 viaducts (3 of which are over 700m long) and 3 tunnels. The views are outstanding when the environmental cost is ignored.

A must stop on the AP46 are the services at the northern end with the restaurant Robledo. Notice boards proudly announce everything as homemade and typical of the region. Not a boring red dish to be seen in the tapas counter and instead freshly made migas, broad beans with Serrano ham and pulpo a la Gallega amongst others are served in generous portions. The shop too sells a great variety of local gourmet specialities. It’s so refreshingly different to service stations in the UK.

Spending our honeymoon recently around Jerez and Algeciras the roads are much better with trains and regular buses to speed the lucky citizens around. Often as estate agents we are asked what the bus network is like as believe it or not; non-drivers also buy and rent houses! We tell them that apart from the yellow buses around Mojacar there’s not a lot of point moving to rural Almeria. In Vera, Cuevas Almanzora and Huercal Overa where national buses stop there are no local buses to such distant out posts as Albox, Mojacar or Garrucha. The rural life!

OUR fORGOTTEN cORNERI know what you are going to say, there are far more weighty matters for

us to consider than the theme of this week’s ramblings, and I suppose you’re right, but nevertheless, it is worth some investigation. So what weighty matters should we be considering? Perhaps things like suitable alternatives to petrol? Another could well be how we can stop global warming. Yes issues that are rightly taking up a great deal of the thinking time for many people. But, another question is worth consideration…where have all the ventriloquists gone?

Have you noticed that, unlike in the past, we very rarely see a ventriloquist on television, although I am sure that, like me, you have some suspicions about those people on daytime television, some of whom could easily be ventriloquist dummies for all the personality they have! No, unless you have the box set of DVD’s celebrating “The Good Old Days” I think it is almost impossible to find one. By the way, is there a box set of “The Good Old Days”?

So why have they gone and where have they gone too? I think the answer to the first question is not that they have been wiped out by a stray asteroid, but rather we are not as daft as we used to be! In the past we happily settled down to programmes that today we would feel embarrassed to watch-remember Eldorado, Triangle and On the Buses? Doesn’t it make you shiver that there may have been a time when you actually said, “Sorry, can’t stop, I’ve got to get home to see Triangle tonight, I love that show.” Well in the past we were happy to be fooled by ventriloquists and ignore their hands working the dummies’ mouth and their lips staying almost still. Maybe that was why the classic Morecambe and Wise ventriloquist sketch with the huge dummy was so funny-we were having our daftness thrown back at us.

Okay, ventriloquists have become endangered, but where are they all? If we look around we can perhaps see where they may have gone. Cast your eyes over the debating chamber in the Houses of Parliament, some in there could possibly be ex ventriloquists, or maybe the dummies. No, far be it from me to say that there are politicians who are being worked by others and have words put in their mouths! Now, which one is Lord Charles?

“There was a baby. A couple on the run. And they were different. They were not right.”

Rachel Simon’s literary career started with her bestselling memoir of her intellectually challenged sister, Beth in “Riding the Bus with my Sister.”

Her motivation for writing both books was not just about Beth but other less fortunate individuals who were institutionalised. In 1972 a programme was shown on US tv about the Willowbrook State School which “horrified” her family.

“I came to feel remorse that institutional tragedies had unfolded in a parallel universe” one that was alien to Simon. There seemed to have been a “secret history” which had been “kept out of sight for so long.” It wasn’t just the American “secret shame” but worldwide. Doris Lessing uses shocking but real images based on a German lunatic asylum in “The Fifth Child.” In the UK Panorama exposed the “shocking treatment” of its disabled residents at Winterbourne View Private Hospital in Bristol recently. The Daily Express reported on the story with a shocking headline that speaks for itself: “Evil Carers Caught on TV Jailed For Reign of Cruelty.”

Another motivating factor was Dave Bakke’s book: “God Knows his Name: The True Story of John Doe No.24.” It was based on an African American, labelled as “feebleminded” and thrown into an institution like a piece of garbage, branded like an animal, No 24 because no-one knew his name or cared enough to find out. Society dehumanised its most vulnerable.

Simon admitted to being “stupefied, horrified and outraged” and the novel became a strong political statement.

The book is a tribute to the resilience and courage of Lynnie who was “exiled into the wilderness” of a Pennsylvanian School for the Incurable and Feebleminded, a place for “defective” children, like a “trap that snaps closed on an animal.” She was originally classified as an upper division “imbecile” and then promoted to the “moron” category. Shocking.

No.42 is the love of Lynnie’s life and we as the reader share his suffering and misery. Martha is a retired teacher who abandons her security and promises to “hide” the baby that is bequeathed to her by two runaways, one stormy night. This is Martha’s second chance after ironically being denied motherhood with the loss of her own “defective” child a long time ago “the cruelest chaos imaginable.” After the initial shock she relishes the challenge but her life is turned upside down with constant hideaways to avoid anyone finding out the true identity of the child. Then there is Kate, an attendant at the school who recognises Lynnie’s gift and shows love towards her amidst the abuse and horror. Salvation at a price.

Beautiful people full of love in a world full of hate for deformity or simply, disability. Martha keeps a meticulous record of Julia’s life with memorabilia

attached to give her some kind of identity when she is no longer able to care for her: “Even after I have passed away, you have only to look in the face of anyone you love and you will see me. I am here for you always.” Unconditional love. Homan’s love for Lynnie is also unconditional, precious and long-lasting.

The lighthouse is symbolically a safe haven for Lynnie and the story begins and ends on this note. “Can you imagine a better day than this?” with freedom from oppression and dollops of love to finish a lovely tale. I leave you with a similar rhetorical question: Can you imagine a better novel to read than this one?

minutes Daya began to push forward. On 9 minutes a great run and cross from Jose was met at the far post by Youssef for 1 - 0 Daya. The home side continued to press forward but somehow Dolores held on. The visitors came more into the game as the half continued but the home side held firm. With 10 minutes remaining in the half Abraham came on as a sub. His first touch almost resulted in a second goal, his shot was parried by the Dolores keeper, only for Carlos following up to have a simple header for Daya’s second goal. More pressure followed from Daya but no more goals. So 2 - 0 at half time with the home side well worth their lead. Dolores came out all guns blazing for the second half putting Daya under intense pressure. The home side did look threatening on occasional breakaways, with a rasping shot from Francisco stinging the fingers of the keeper. Still the visitors poured forward, surely a goal had to come for them ! Daya came

more into the game as the half wore on and had a couple of good chances themselves. Dolores seemed to run out of ideas and conviction towards the end and Daya were well worth their 2 - 0 win. Difficult to select a Man of the Match. All the Daya defence put in solid performances, with Danni in goal having his third shut-out in a row, but did not have a lot to do thanks to the guys in front of him. Youssef scored for the fourth game running and worked his socks off up front. So all the Daya players, including the subs, were “Man of the Match”. The referee was not at his best today, I thought he had come without a whistle as it was 10 minutes before I heard it. This did not detract from a game played in a sporting manner in front of a massive crowd. So Daya go marching on making Coach Paco’s Sunday pint taste all the better. Wednesday meeting up in the hills at the back of Elche but the very cold wind saw many golfers soon searching through their bags for sweaters and wind-cheaters in defence against the “rather cool” Autumn conditions.The strong wind made quite

a few of the holes very tricky indeed, especially at the course’s highest point where the 11th and 12th are situated. Still, this weird and wonderful game did display one of its more likeable characteristics when Bill, a new member in our group, hit his approach shot to the 11th green very much against the prevailing “force 10 howler!”In such conditions it was much

too elevated a shot which got caught by the wind as it flew off to the right towards the neighbouring road and houses.....but when it’s YOUR day it’s YOUR day!A few bounces and clangs

on the railings followed by a perfect 45 degree glance off the wall and – yes, you’ve guessed it – onto the green, amidst cheers and applause from the gob-smacked onlookers. I hasten to add that this well thought out approach shot was accomplished only after sinking far more than his fair share of lengthy putts on the earlier holes....it was certainly Bill’s day!NTP’s were claimed by Colin

Rust, Steve Davis, John Osborne and Norman Padmore with the guest prize going to Rob Stevens with 25 points.Nobody else but Bill Preston

was going to win the silver category which he promptly did with his 33 points, followed by Phil de Lacy with 31 and Ron Stenhouse with 29.Gold division was headed by

LO CRISPEN GOLF SOCIETY IN AID OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

TORREVIEJA BRANCH POPPY APPEAL The venue for the day was

the Vistabella Golf Club, where the staff had prepared the coarse to perfection for the Golf Day in aid of the Royal British Legion Torrevieja Branch Poppy Appeal. At precisely 9-30 am there was a shotgun start with players out on every tee, and with prizes to be won on every hole the competition was fierce, thankfully there were no hiccups due to the wonderful organising of Brian And Gail Coultate.The best hole won on the day

must go to Danny Wheatley on the monster par 5, hole 7 where it was nearest the pin in 3 shots, he was on in 2 and holed out for 3 well done Danny.With every hole having a

sponsor the Royal British Legion must thank Mr Ian Carmichael of 8 Ball Pool and Leisure who through his many

clients help secure so many fantastic prizes.The winners on the day

were: in Third Place with 32 points Ray Moles off an 8 Handicap, Second Place with 33 points Ronnie Gibson off a 13 Handicap and the Winner was Mr George Turley with 34 points off a 10 Handicap, and was presented with his cup by our Chairlady Mrs Gillian Burden. George and his friends who were on holiday had seen the posters advertising the day, and in his speech thanked the organisers for the day and for making it a fantastic finish to his holiday. Well done George but the real winners of the day was the Poppy Appeal, we are still collecting donations, and the raffle will be drawn on the 6th November the total collected will be displayed in The Tavern at Lo Crispen and announced in the papers for all to see. There is a fantastic and most generous bunch of players in Lo Crispen Golf Society, The Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion salute you all.

November Stableford competitionOn Friday 2nd November we

played at La Peraleja , from the negative reports we had during the previous weeks we were wondering what we were up against , we need not have bothered as although some of the fairways ( possibly 3 ) did leave a lot to be desired , but with the local rule being that the ball could be lifted from any of the sandy areas on the applicable fairways and moved to a better spot , it wasn’t an issue that the areas in question had been sanded , the greens more than made up for this small problem as they were in excellent condition being quite fast yet true and receptive , after the game we returned the Mini Golf Bar in Quesada for the presentation a few beers and some snacks provided by the bar . I have to say that La Peraleja

gave us a very good deal which reflected on our prizes as any free games etc. are used for this purpose and are not taken by any of our members but used towards our prizes and

Christmas fund .Our nearest the pins were

Larry Kinsella , Keith Smith, Bill Fantom and Dave Pretty ( whose ball finished about 2-3 inches from the hole ) , each received a sleeve of golf balls , as La Peraleja has 5 par three’s Mick ‘the Grip’ Reeves donated a strip of raffle tickets for the R B L draw as a prize for the 5th par 3 which was won by Peter Ogden , in third place was Larry Kinsella who received a golf shop voucher and a boxed presentation golf set , second place was taken by Colin Edwards both players had 35 points with Colin winning on handicap , our winner with very good score of 40 points was Ron Perkins ( this score has been noted by our handicap secretary Alan Gifford ) , both 2nd and 1st received cash, and a voucher for a round of golf at La Peraleja . TMGS Match report for Alicante Golf, 31st October 2012.After a heavy night of rain

for most people, Wednesday saw the sun shining once again and that sun, with the rather strong wind, dried out the course to enable the 30 members making the journey “up north” worthwhile and it must be said that the course was in excellent condition although we do wish those creating pitch marks would repair them.Today was a pair’s event,

Stableford 2 ball better ball with 15 teams taking part and there were quite some very

reasonable scores bought to the table and it needed 43 points to secure 3rd place and this was taken by the pairing of Steve Higgins and Darren Hancock. In 2nd place was the pairing of Brian Dunk and Derek McLean with 44 points, just 1 point behind the winning pair of Alan Rixson and Ally Murray who came in with 45 points. MAKE IT 5 GAMES UNBEATEN WITH A NARROW WINLast Thursday, Torry

entertained 2nd in the table Utiel who were promoted to the Tercera in the play-offs at the end of last season and have made a great start to the season at the higher level. Going into the game they were 3 points ahead of Torry having won 6, drawn 2 and lost 2 scoring 11 and conceding 9. Torry were without the

suspended Vicente and Rafa, who has recently had is appendix removed and is recovering well, and also Pedro Lopez who has a niggling injury and is not 100% fit . Available again for selection after serving their one match suspensions were Ernesto and Koeman. The previous week Torry were short up front while this week they were short at the back. The manager, therefore, had to reshuffle the pack and put out a very attacking minded line-up with Manu Amores at right-back and Burguillos in central defence and 4 attacking forwards and potential match-winners in Gasch, Ernesto, Koeman and Inarejos. Torrys starting line-up:

Manolo; Manu Amores, Jorge, Burguillos, Javi Losa, Abel, Dani (Cuco Ros, 87’), Gasch, Inarejos, Ernesto (Luis Carlos, 65’), Koeman (Jose Manuel, 76’). On a sunny late afternoon, in front of a crowd of around 400 the game kicked-off on a playing surface that had obviously been worked on and had recovered after cutting up badly during the last home game. The game got off to a lively start and Inarejos had

a chance after 2 minutes but shot hurriedly and wide of the near post. After 5 minutes the opposition carved out an opening but the forwarded lean backed, when well placed and rifled the ball over the top. The game was open with Torry being the more direct and Utiel being the more measured in their approach with their veteran no.6 directing operations through midfield. On 16 minutes Manolo made a very good save tipping a pile-driver over the top at full stretch. Inarejos was seeing plenty of the ball but was producing no end product. On 27 minutes Manu Amores released Koeman with a great through ball and from an angle Koeman beat the opposition keeper with his strike and the ball went into the “Back of the Net” for a GOALLLLL to Torry 1-0. On 36 minutes Ernesto was played in by Inarejos but struck his shot across goal and wide of the far post. On 39 minutes the “all action” Abel had an opportunity after being played in by Dani, but got a bad bounce, and blazed wide. Inarejos was then cautioned for a dive in the box. Was it or wasn’t it. Anyway that was how the referee saw it. Inarejos is getting a bit of a reputation like Suarez of Liverpool. On 44 minutes wonderful close control and quick feet by Ernesto on the edge of a crowded penalty area set up Inarejos but he dallied on the ball and was closed down before putting a shot away .1-0 at the break to Torry. In

the second-half Utiel gradually gained greater control of the midfield area and pushed Torry back with Torry relying

on the quick counter attack primarily through Inarejos who failed to capitalise on the opportunites that fell his way and produce any really telling crosses or passes into the danger area. On 67 minutes he did break clear and get away but his stinging shot was blocked by their keeper. On 80 minutes the hard working Dani went down injured and had to be stretchered off. As the game entered the last 15 minutes the opposition really started to open up the Torry defence particularly down their right-hand side and Manolo had to pull off a couple of outstanding saves and the defence had to put their bodies on the line to preserve the lead. Just before the final whistle it looked certain that Utiel would equalise as the ball bobbled in front of goal but somehow Torry survived to win a hard fought game with a display full of hard work and determination against a well drilled side of exuberant youth marshalled by a couple of old heads in the middle of the park. Torry are 7th in the table. On

Sunday at 5.00 pm Torry are at home to Alzira, who are 1 point and 1 place above Torry in the table having played a game more. Torry will be looking for another win to stay in contention towards the top of the table and extend their unbeaten run to 6 matches. The match has been declared a “Fiesta Day” and there will be a giant Paella with free portions for spectators and I believe also some pre-match music to liven things up. A happy and relieved

MAZARRON FC 3 ATLETICO PULPILENO 0Mazarron’s improved form

continued but this time they were able to turn an excellent performance into their first victory of the season.Pulpileno had the better

of the opening exchanges without troubling Jose Iker in the Mazarron goal. Then, after 10 minutes, Cecilio was brought down 20 metres out and Poyato fired the resulting free kick straight at the keeper. However, four minutes later,

a superb ball out of defence found Ruben down the right and from his cross Cecilio fired in from close range to give Mazarron the lead. Poyato was a powerhouse in midfield for the home team winning tackles and distributing the

ball well. Mazarron continued to be

the better team and both Cecilio and Ruben went close but Pulpileno came back into the game before half time and Iker had to be at his best to deny the visiting centre forward. In the last few minutes of the half Diego made a great saving tackle and a Pulpileno corner was scrambled off the line by the ever consistent Alfonso.In the second half Ruben

continued to cause problems for the Pulpi defence with his runs down the left side and another excellent cross found Cecilio who headed over the bar. In the 60th minute Barrachina shot straight at the Pulpi keeper, who then saved well from Jose Ruben. But, in the 64th minute, Mazarron

increased their lead when Ruben’s pass found Panocha whose shot hit the post and came straight to Cecilio and the new striker, making his home debut, grabbed his second goal of the game. In the 66th minute Santi,

who had replaced Poyato, had a shot from some distance that just cleared the bar. Then Ruben was cynically brought down in the Pulpi box but no penalty was awarded. A few minutes later, however, a superb run by Panocha was halted when he was hacked down in the penalty area and this time the referee had no hesitation in awarding Mazarron a penalty kick. Panocha himself duly scored from the spot.Pulpileno had a few chances

in the closing minutes but Jose Iker was not really troubled and the game ended with a superb 3-0 victory for Mazarron which could, and should, have been by a bigger margin. Jose Iker, Alfonso, Pepelu,

RODS AND REELS This weeks competition was

the first for the CoastRider Challenge Trophy, a series of 6 matches with the best 5 results to count. The venue being the Eden canal stretch of the Rio Segura. Although there had been rain the day before, the river had some pace on it and with some colour, but fished reasonably well. The banks were a bit treacherous where the rain had washed some mud down the bank onto the peg. round of the Winter League was fished at Nancy’s on the 30th October.Following the heavy rain of

the previous days the water levels were up and coloured, although there is not a lot of tide on the Mediterranean Sea it does affect this stretch of water. As the tide goes out there is a good flow but when the tide comes in the flow stops and the fish do not seem to feed as well, the peg I fished was high and dry when we started and when we finished it was 4inches under water.The fancied pegs on the

day are the ones below the boom where there is always plenty of flow once again this is where the winning weight came from.1st Ian (The Irish Wizard)

Redovan at home in front of a large crowd looking for their first points of the season. Costa had to make a couple of changes from last weeks solid performance due to injuries which led to call ups for Georgie Mint into central defence, Kristjan Gudmundsson into goal keeper and young Ciaran Sullivan into left midfield. Costa dominated a lot of the play in the opening minutes and if not for the visiting goal keeper in fine form could of found

t h e m s e l ve s a couple of goals up. Charlie Frost, Glen Lawton & Patrick Bass dominated the midfield play and provided a good platform for Costa to sit in the oppos i t i ons half. Against the run of play

Costa were made to pay down there left when a cross wasn’t blocked and when the ball entered the six yard box no Costa player could clear the ball to leave stand in keeper no chance to see the ball. 1 - 0 to Redovan , which gave them a huge lift in confidence. Costa took the blow well and didn’t panic and time & time again created chances in front of goal. Cesar Augusto provided a good out let down the left and linked up well with Sullivan & Lawton to provide crosses into the box. Then on 33 minutes quite possibly the goal of the season may have come from Midfield dynamo Charlie Frost who’s wonder strike from distance tipped in

under the crossbar to take the game to 1 - 1.Second half once again

dominated by Costa who at one stage made it look like a training session putting 12 plus passes together and giving Redovan a torrid time. Callum Gildea nearly stole the 3 points when he found himself through on goal but was unlucky with his finish. Glen Lawton tested the keeper several times from free kicks in which the keeper did well to deny Lawton from scoring.A nasty injury to Luke Deegan saw him have to leave the field & then Kristjan in goal looked like he to may have to come off due to a nasty knock on his ankle but after treatment managed to carry on. Despite constant pressure it wasn’t to be and Costa had to settle for a draw.For more information on

A number of Running Wild A.C. s members were unavailable for this road-race but the Club were still able to enter 10 runners, who between them picked up 5 trophies.The windy conditions & the

“zigzag” nature of the course had a somewhat adverse effect on finishing times for the 225 plus competitors.The Club s top achievers

were Helen Mitford, 1st. Lady Vet. “E” in 56:03, Helen Giles, 2nd. Lady Vet. “A” and Julia Skinner, 3rd. Lady Vet. “C” in 57:16 & 63:45, respectively.Other awards were given

to Frauke Gerlach (68:51) and John Pascoe (55:52), who completed the course as the “Oldest Veterans”.Newcomer, Steve

Hartnett was first club member home in 46:48, as 5th place in Vet. “E”. He was followed in by Paul Bell (53:29), competing again after an injury layoff. Paul, like Jim Gavin (59:25) and Shirley Crandon (63:33) were all competing in the highest age category, over 55 years, while being actually qualified for older groupings. Shirley, however did manage 5th position, Vet. “E”.Footnotes :- a) Club member,
