    Famous For : City

Calicut or Kozhikode is historically known forwelcoming Vasco da Gama, way back in

1498 AD. Amongst its myriad charms, it has

a couple of other attractive crowd pullers

like the Dolphin's Point and the Kozhikode

Beach. As the name suggests, Dolphin's

Point is the place to watch frolicking

dolphins. Similarly, the Kozhikode Beach is

another terrific spot with its ruined old piers, lighthouse, Lion's Park and Marine Water

    Aquarium.

Much like the many meanings of its name,

the town offers many facets. The name

derives from the words koyil (palace) and

kotta (fort). The city was once surrounded by

the fort built by its ruler, the Zamorin, who

encouraged trade with the Arabs by giving

special concessions. Though the locals called

it Kozhikode, for the Arabs it was Kalikat; for

the Chinese, Kalifo; and for Europeans,

Calicut. The British then immortalised the

name by calling the locally produced cloth

    calico.

    Originating from Chalippuzha River which

diverges into 3 waterfalls, ThusharagiriWaterfalls are certainly a pleasure to visit.

The highest waterfall among the three is

Thenpara which falls from a height of 246

feet. The winding, narrow roads will take

you to this beautiful waterfall and you would

be accompanied by serenity and lush

greenery throughout your journey. It is not

only a nature lover's paradise, you can also

try your hands at rock climbing and trekking

while you are here and trust us when we say

that it is going to be one of the most

memorable vacations of your life. You can

also pay visit to the nearby wildlife

sanctuary and treat yourself to some rare

    varieties of flora and fauna.

    3 Payyoli Beach Theeram

    Village Payyoli, Kozhikode, Kerala,

    India

Stretching right by Velliyamkallu, Payyolibeach is the major attraction in the village,

that, too, is named Payyoli. This solitary

stretch by the sea is well known for the

golden gleaming sand that often sees the

calm, blue waters of the sea sweeping over.

The little, quaint village of Payyoli is

thronged by tourists all around the year for

    its beachside.

    4 Mishkal Masjid

    Kuttichira, Kozhikode, Kerala, India

Mishkal Masjid, was partially burnt down bythe Portuguese in 1510, but is still

    architecturally striking, and sports a

    traditional Keralite pagoda-like roof.

    5 Thikkoti Light House

    Near Velliyamkallu Rock, Calicut,

    Kerala, India

Thikkoti Light House is definitely one of the

most fascinating monuments steeped in the

history of Kozhikode. You would be

interested to know that there is quite an

    interesting history concerning Thikkoti Light

House. According to the legend, the

Light House was built on the remains of ashipwreck, which was from a boat that

crashed very near the rocky shore.

So, Thikkoti Light House acts like a

    fearful reminder of that accident.

    Interestingly, the beach overlooks the

Velliyamkallu Rock was very much dreaded

by mariners, off Mtoodadi coast. The entire

region around the Velliyamkallu Rock is also

home to various migratory birds. You would

not want to miss a nice picnic with your

    loved ones at this lighthouse.

    Where To

    Eat 5 Places

    http://www.ixigo.com/foods-in-of-calicut-lp-1069180

    1 Paragon Restaurant

    Near CH Flyover, Kannur Road,

    Calicut, Kerala 673001, India

    +91-495-2767020

Ranked the top favourite restaurant in

Calicut on Tripadvisor, Paragon is one of the

must visit places when you are in Calicut.Though it serves a variety of multi-cuisine

fares, it is their Malabari dishes that make

this places a rocking hit. Most of the time

the place is pretty crowded and you might

have to wait a while till you get a

    table.

    2 Zains

Behind Fire Station, Convent Crs Rd,

    South Beach, Calicut Ho, Kozhikode,

    673001, India

    +91-495-2366311

An uninspiring old house, average seating

area, sub-standard decor and absence of

menu cards- not a very encouraging picture

to begin with, but if you are willing to ignore

    everything else for mind-blowing Muslim

Malabari cuisine, trust us when we say, you

will not regret a visit to Zains.

    3 Hotel Sagar

    Mavoor Road, Kozhikode, Kerala,

    673004, India

    +91-495-2720152

For a budget hotel, you would not expect

the interiors to be so chic-stylish with dark

    wood panellings and intricate wood

latticework. Apart from the nice ambience,

the place dishes out amazing vegetarian and

non-vegetarian thali meals. The Biriyani here

is simply too good and a definite must try.

The service is usually quick, but if the place

is too crowded, you might have to wait a

while till you catch the attention of the

    waiters.
