ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY

NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : KOZHIKODE / CALICUT AIRPRORT (KERALA)

ABOUT THE CITY:

(I) INTRODUCTION: Kozhikode District is a district of Kerala state, on the southwest coast of India. The city of Kozhikode, formerly known as Calicut, is the district headquarters. The district is 38.25 % urbanised. Kozhikode district is bordered by the districts of Kannur and Mahe in Pondichery state to the north, Wayanad to the east, and Malappuram to the south. Kozhikode also known as Calicut, is a city in the state of Kerala in southern India on the Malabar Coast. Kozhikode is the largest urban area in the state and 195th largest urban area in the world. The city lies about 275 km west of Bangalore. The greater Calicut urban area in the Malabar Coast is the part of the ninth biggest urban area in the world and the second biggest in India after the greater Kolkatta urban area, which constitute of the northern Kerala region or the Malabar Coast.

(II) ABOUT THE DISRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL:

POPULATION: As per 2011 census report the population of Kozhikode is 5,50,440. ECONOMY: There has been great leap in small scale industries in kozhikode. It has become a major non leather footwear manufacturing hub in India. Footwear industries have been flourishing in this city. Kozhikode is one of the main commercial cities of Kerala. The economy is mainly business oriented. The city currently is the major trade hub of North Kerala with good connectivity through road, rail and air. It also has large timber yards along the banks of the Kallayi River. Kozhikode District with 8% of the state population makes 12% contribution to the state's income. Kozhikode has witnessed a building boom in recent years, this is particularly evident in the number of malls and buildings built in recent years. Kozhikode is also going to be the first city in Kerala to have a mono rail transporting system. The KSRTC bus terminal which is under construction is the biggest bus terminal in Kerala. Kerala's first and second tallest buildings are under construction in kozhikode. It is also famous for timber trade and roof tales manufacturing centre. The District has an intermediate port at Kozhikode (including Beypore) and a minor port at Vatakara. In coast line of the Kozhikode port extends from Elathur cape to the south bank of Kadalundi River and treads roughly in straight line. This port has two Piers, but this cannot be used due to the dilapidate condition. Traffic is mainly dealt at Beypore port. Kozhikode Port has a Light House and a Signal Station. The godown at South Pier is used as transit sheds. Two IT "cyber parks" are under construction in Kozhikode. One is the UL Cyber Park constructed and operated by ULCCSC, a Kozhikode-based company. UL Cyber Park began operation in 2012 and will complete its first phase in 2013. The other park is run by the government, and will complete its first construction phase in 2014. Cyber park, is a Government of Kerala organisation planned to build, operate and manage IT parks for the promotion and development of investment in IT and ITES industries in Malabar region of Kerala and will be the third IT hub in the state of Kerala. The two IT park will create a total 100,000 direct job opportunities. It is in the process of setting up IT parks at Kozhikode, at the SEZs approved at Kannur and Kasargod. Its first project is

2

the development of Cyber park hub in Kozhikode with its spokes at Kannur and Kazargode IT parks. Other planned projects include the Birla IT Park (at Mavoor) and Malaysian satellite city (at Kinaloor) where KINFRA has plans to set up a 400-acre industrial park. There has been a great leap in small-scale industries in Kozhikode district. Footwear industries have been flourishing in this city, and it has become a major non leather footwear manufacturing hub in India. INDUSTRY: Kozhikode is in cusp of an era which offers tremendous opportunity for the entire Malabar region to prosper. Beypore Port development, Revival of Malabar Spinning Mill, SAIL-Steel complex Joint Venture, Knowledge Park of KINFRA, Expansion of Kozhikode International Airport, Cyber Park at Nellikode, Cochin Industrial Rail Corridor to Mangalore touching Kozhikode, Coconut Park of KSIDC at Kuttiady, The Techno Industrial Park (NEO Space) of KINFRA at Kakkancherry, NIRDESH by the Ministry of Defence, GOI are some of the mega projects which can trigger the economic development of the region. The IGC Kozhikode spread over 308 acres of land - the largest Industrial park in the District has all the basic infrastructure facilities and excellent road connectivity. A footwear park by KSIDC has started functioning from the IGC and works are underway for a Food Processing Park in 50 acres of Land. TOURISM POTENTIAL: Kerala, a state situated on the tropical Malabar Coast of southwestern India, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Named as one of the ten paradises of the world by National Geographic Traveler, Kerala is famous especially for its ecotourism initiatives and beautiful backwaters. Its unique culture and traditions, coupled with its varied demography, have made Kerala one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Growing at a rate of 13.31% the tourism industry is a major contributor to the state's economy. This is a list of places of interest and historical significance in Kozhikode. KOZHIKODE BEACH: The beach is the most popular retreat for locals. In spite of beautification works and lax coastal management, it remains unexploited and visually pleasing. This shore has been a witness to many historic events, including pitched naval battles and the arrival of ships from distant lands. VELIYANGAD is not a typical 'place of interest' to visit. The noise, rush and heat of this narrow lane would test any visitor's mettle. Nevertheless, not many streets can boast a 600 year old history and still be functioning as one of the main commercial centre of a city. THE REGIONAL SCIENCE CENTRE: The Regional Science Centre and Planetarium functioning under NCSM (Govt. of India) shoulders the leading role in propelling science dissemination activities in Kerala, especially in the Malabar region. SAROVARAM: is an eco-friendly bio-park in Kozhikode city. It is a project meant for conservation of the wetlands through eco-friendly tourism interventions by sustainable methods.

3

TALI SIVA TEMPLE: The Tali Siva temple was one of the two Brahmanical royal temples patronized by the Zamorin (the other being the Valayanaattu Kavu) and to this day remains one of the most important spiritual and cultural centres in Kozhikode. THE BHAGAVATY TEMPLE: The Bhagavaty temple on a hillock on the southern side of Kallayi River is one of the two pre-Calicut temples known to historians, built at least two centuries before the foundation of the city. THIRUVANNUR SHIVA TEMPLE: This ancient and beautiful Siva temple has an apsidal garbhagriha, decorated with typical Chola pillars and pilasters, panjaras and vyalimukhas. THUSHARAGIRI FALLS: Thusharagiri Falls is a waterfall in Chembukadavu Thusharagiri offers endless scope for trekking, rock climbing and wildlife sanctuary visits. It is around 50 kilometres from Kozhikode. KAPPAD (KAPPAKKADAVU) BEACH: Kappad (Kappakkadavu) Beach is located 16 km to the north of Kozhikode along the Kannur road at Tiruvangoor. Apart from the fact that it is a beautiful rocky beach with high potential for tourism, it is the site where Vasco Da Gama landed on 27 May 1498 with three vessels and 170 men Beypore. Beypore is a small port town situated 10 km south of Kozhikode at the mouth of Chaliyar River. Beypore is famous for its ancient shipbuilding industry that constructed the Uru, trading vessels more popular during the medieval periods and still used by the Arabs and others for commerce and tours. KIRTADS: This unique museum houses the tools and devices used by the ancient tribal communities of Kerala. A good library with books on anthropology and sociology is an added attraction.
