MessagefromtheBoardChairTheCalgaryMontessoriSchoolwasfoundedin1919asadayandboardingschoolforGradesOnetoTwelvetoeducateCalgaryfamiliesfollowingtheMontessorimethod.OvertheyearstheschoolhasevolvedbasedonCalgary’seconomyandtheneedsofourfamilies.ItsprimaryfocusforoverfiftyyearswasqualityMontessoripreschoolandelementaryeducation.In2005,theBoardshifteditsfocustoofferingonlyPreschool/Kindergarten.BasedonthecontinuedsuccessoftheprogramandtheneedsandwishesofourfamiliestocontinuereceivingexcellentMontessorieducationpastKindergarten,theBoardmadetheexcitingdecisiontoestablishanelementaryprograminSeptember2015.WiththeblessingofAlbertaEducation,weopenedaclassroomwithninestudentsinGradesOnetoThreeforthe2015/16schoolyear.Forthe2016/17schoolyear,theelementaryenrolmentmorethandoubledtotwentystudents.TheB.Ed.andAMIMontessoricertifiedteacherwasjoinedbyasecondB.Ed.andAMIcertifiedteacher.OurParentAdvisoryCouncilwasestablishedinthefallof2016andhasbeensosupportiveofvariousclassroomactivitiesincludingaparentappreciationteainMayandcoordinatingtheorderinganddistributionofuniforms.TheBoardissopleasedtohavesupportfromourfamilies.ThePACplanstoenhancetheirroleinspecialschoolevents,byorganizingafundraisingeventinthefallof2017.AsChair,IenjoyedtakingpartinthemonitoringvisitbyrepresentativesofAlbertaEducation.Itwassogreattoreceivesuchpositivefeedbackfromourvisitors.IalsoenjoyedcontinuingtoconnectwithBoardChairsfromotherprivateschoolsbyattendingmeetingsorganizedbyAlbertaEducationandAISCA.TheBoardisverypleasedthatenrolmentintheelementaryhasincreasedagainforthe2017/18schoolyearto32andisexcitedaboutthefutureofCMS.AccountabilityStatement TheEducationPlanforCalgaryMontessoriSchoolforthethreeyearscommencingSeptember1st,2017waspreparedunderthedirectionoftheBoardofDirectorsinaccordancewiththeresponsibilitiesunderthePrivateSchoolRegulationandtheEducationGrantsRegulation.ThisEducationPlanwasdevelopedinthecontextoftheprovincialgovernment’sbusinessandfiscalplans.TheBoardiscommittedtoimplementingthestrategiescontainedwithintheplantoimprovestudentlearningandresults.TheBoardapprovedtheThree-YearEducationPlanfor2017/2020andtheAERRfor2016/2017onNovember13th,2017.CreatedandPreparedby:TeresaSabiston,Principal AlisonO’Dwyer,BoardChair

• AllclassroomsatCalgaryMontessoriSchoolarecomprisedofmulti-aged,multi-
gradedgroupingsofchildren.ThesegroupingsreflecttheplanesofdevelopmentputforthbyDr.MariaMontessori:0-6,6-12,12-18&18-24.CalgaryMontessoriSchoolcurrentlyoffersPreschool/Kindergartenforages3to6andLowerElementaryforages6to10(Grades1–4).
• MontessoriguideswithPrimary/Elementarycredentialsworkwiththeagelevelof
studentstheyarequalifiedtoteach(Primary:3to6,Elementary:6to12).TheseguidesalsohaveAlbertaB.Ed.certification.Studentsremainwiththesameteachers/classroomcommunityforathree-yearcycle.
• EachpreparedenvironmenthasafullcomplementofMontessorimaterialsand
activitiesthatfosterindependence(physical,emotional,cognitiveandsocial).Theseexercisesencouragespontaneousactivity,self-directedlearningandwithrepeatedpractice,promotemasteryofconcepts/skills.
• Studentsworkattheirownpace,attheirownlevelandreceivelessonsonan
individual,smallgroupandlargegroupbasis.Collaboration,peerteachingandmentoringarecorevaluesofauthenticMontessoripractice.
• Eachschooldayisstructuredwithlong,uninterruptedblocksoftime,allowing
childrentimetodelvedeeplyintosubjectareas.Uninterruptedthree-hourworkcyclesallowchildrentimetoabsorbnewconcepts,makemeaningfulconnections,practicenewskillsandreflectonnewlyacquiredknowledge.Learningismastery-basedwitheachchildprogressingtothenextlesson/conceptacquisitionwhensuccesshasbeenobservedbytheMontessoriguideand/ordemonstratedbythechild.

ObservationsandNewInitiativesContinuedGrowth(ElementaryProgram)CalgaryMontessoriSchoolcontinuestoattractstudentstoitsElementaryprogramandcurrentlyhasatotalenrolmentof32students.Planningforfuturegrowthisagainattheforefrontoffutureplanningdecisions.Theadministrationwillplanforanyadditionalspacerequirementsfor2018-2019year.DiscussionsregardingthistopicareongoingwiththefacilitymanageratTempleB’NaiTikvah.RenewedFocusonPromotingStudentRetention(Kindergarten–TheThirdYear)ItisimportantCalgaryMontessoriSchool’spreschoolchildrenstaytocompletetheirthirdyear(Kindergarten)atCalgaryMontessoriSchool.ThethirdyearinaMontessoriPreschoolprogramallowskindergartenstudentsanopportunitytoconsolidateandsynthesizetheskillsandconceptstheyhaveexploredintheirpreschoollearningcommunities.Aseriesofparenteducationeveningsforparentsof3,4and5-year-oldchildreneachfallhelpsparentsunderstandtheimportanceofcompletingthisthree-yearcycle.RenewedeffortsbyadministrationandstafftogetparentsouttotheseeveningsisbeingmetwithsupportfromC.M.S.’sparentcommunity.Advertising,OpenHousesandParentInformationEvenings(Elementary)WiththeMontessoriLowerElementaryprogramnowfullyestablished,familieswithchildrenatCalgaryMontessoriSchoolhaveanadditionalchoicewhendecidingwheretoenroltheirchildforGradeOne.Moreofourpreschoolfamiliesareexpressinginterestincontinuingtheirchild’seducationaljourneyinaMontessoriprogram.OpenHousesandParentEducationEveningsregardingtheMontessoriElementaryprogramarescheduledforthefallof2017andthroughouttheschoolyear.AswordaboutC.M.S.’sElementaryprogramspreads,moreinquiriesarebeingfieldedfromparentsoutsideoftheC.M.S.communitywantingtoenroltheirchild.BeforeandAfterSchoolCareProgram(New)CalgaryMontessoriSchoolreachedouttofamilieslastyeartodeterminethelevelofneedand/orinterestinprovidingbeforeandafter-schoolcareatalllocations.Currently,before-schoolcareisbeingofferedatalllocationsforfamiliesthatexpressedaneedforthisservice.Inaddition,after-schoolmusicandyogaprogramsfrom3.00pmto4.00pmarebeingofferedtwiceaweekforkindergartenandelementarystudentsattheBritannialocationRedesignedParentSatisfactionSurveyTheParentSatisfactionSurveyunderwentaredesigninthespringof2017beforebeingdistributedtoparentsofkindergartenandelementarystudents.Atotalof69surveysweredistributedtoparentsand30surveyswerereturned.11/20surveyswerereturnedfromelementaryparentsand19/30surveyswerefromparentswithchildreninkindergarten.SurveyresultsoffervaluableinsightsintowhatisworkingwellatC.M.S.andinformsstrategiesdesignedtoaddressanyareas/issuesneedingattention.IncreasingparentparticipationincompletingandreturningthesesurveyswillbeafocusinJune2018.ParentAdvisoryCouncil(NewFundraisingInitiative)CalgaryMontessoriSchool’sParentAdvisoryCouncilnowhasacoreexecutiveof4directorsconsistingofacouncilchair,treasurer,secretaryandsocialcoordinator,aswellastwomembers-at-largethatjoinedtheexecutiveinthefallof2017.TheP.A.C.wasexcitedtocoordinatetheyear-endelementaryschoolpicnicinJune2017,aswellascoordinateschooluniformsfornewandreturningelementarystudents.TheP.A.C.executivelaunchedafundraisinginitiativeinNovember2017toraisefundsforfacilitatingenrichmentactivitiesforkindergartenandelementarystudents.

OutcomeOne:Alberta’sstudentsaresuccessfulTheperformancemeasureslistedbelow*donotapplytostudentsthatattendedCalgaryMontessoriSchoolforthe2016-2017schoolyear.*HighSchoolCompletionrate,Drop-Outrate,HighSchooltoPostSecondarytransitionrate,PercentageofGrade12studentseligibleforaRutherfordScholarshipandthePercentageofstudentswritingfourormorediplomaexamswithinthreeyearsofenteringGrade10.CommentsCalgaryMontessoriSchooliscommittedtoensuringstudentsaresuccessfulinthepursuitoflearningandtoensuringeachchildexperiencesahigh-qualityMontessorieducationalexperience.Insodoing,studentswillacquiretheknowledge,skillsandattributesnecessarytosetthemupforsuccessfulcompletionofstudentlearningoutcomesandschoolingingeneral.CalgaryMontessoriSchoolfirmlybelievesin‘educatingthewholechild’.Teachers,staffandadministrationbelievethattimespentensuringeachchildfeelsvaluedandrespectedisaworthwhileendeavor.Developingastrongsenseofself-esteem,belongingandpurposewithineachchildwillnurturesuccessful,activecitizensinthefuture.Strategies

• Secondlanguageschools/charterschoolsetc.areindirectcompetitionforkindergartenstudents.Keepingenrolmentstrongatthepreschool/kindergartenlevelmeansmorefamilieswithchildrengraduatingfromKindergartenwillbeinapositiontoconsiderElementaryMontessori.
• PlanstoestablishanUpperElementaryprogramisanimportantpartofCalgaryMontessoriSchool’sfuturegrowthplan,asthiswillallowstudentsandtheirfamiliestheopportunitytoremainatthesameschoolfortheentiresix-yearelementarycycle.

• Currently,therearenocapitalplansorfacilityprojectsbeingconsidered.TimelinesandCommunicationTheBoardofDirectorsofTheCanadianMontessoriSchoolLtd.willapproveCalgaryMontessoriSchool’sThree-YearEducationPlanduringitsannualfallmeeting.ItwillbesubmittedtoAlbertaEducationbyNovember30th,2017.TheThree-YearEducationPlan/AERRwillbecirculatedtoparentsandhardcopieswillbeavailableonsiteateachschoollocation.Membersofthegeneralpublicwillhaveaccesstothisdocumentontheschool’swebsite.WhistleblowerProtectionTherearenodisclosurestoreport.
