President’s CornerMICHELLE SANDERS-WILSON

The holidays are over and the board members of MPPOAare in full swing working hard to bring the best ineducational opportunities to the membership.

Our first regional meeting of the year was held February8th in Detroit. Jim Newman’s presentation, “LEED orGet Out of the Way,” provided an enormous amount ofinformation on environmental issues relative to buildingprojects.

LEAP classes also resumed in February beginning withreview sessions for both CPPB and CPPO Certifications. The next training session “Contracting for PublicServices” will be held in April.

Our annual conference is scheduled for May 16 – 18,2007 at the beautiful Treetops Resort in Gaylord. Thisyear’s topic “R U Certifiable?” will provide severalseminars that will benefit members seeking to obtainand/or retain professional certification. Earlyregistration is highly recommended.

Enjoy the rest of the winter season. I look forward toseeing all of you at the spring conference.

Jim Newman, CEM, and LEED®Accredited Professional, had a messagefor anyone who is in the building andbuilding maintenance business—thinkGREEN.

Newman’s talk not only spurred us on toprotect the environment, it also gavesome key points about the cost of being“Green.” GOOD NEWS—LEEDcertification at the Silver level shouldn’tcost more than 1% over any other

design.Whoa!

Winter, 2007-6-

MPPOA is LEEDing theto a better

world

MPPOA is LEEDing the Way

The bad news? Well—the planet is suffering, or at least it is usingits natural resources like they aren’t going to run out. The biggestoffender? The USA, but China and other emerging markets are right on our heels and will cause biggerproblems than we have seen. Soaring energy costs, using present technology, aren’t going away.

So, what do we do? First—use LEED design in every building constructed. And, since most of us are instructures that are 5 years old or older, make some changes that will preserve our resources. LEED certifieddesigns save energy and water, reduce carbon emissions and harmful waste. Good building design addressesIAQ (Indoor Air Quality), which, in turn, helps increase productivity, keeps people healthy and is a goodselling point when trying to lease or market a property.

“Michigangreen.org is a great place to start shopping,” says Newman, in a subsequent phone call to theEditor of the Spanner.. “I forgot to mention it to the group, but they not only have information about beingGreen, they have some money. Especially for schools”

Michigan isn’t the national leader in Green building and design. However, it is doing quite well. “Without thelegislated incentives that other states are offering, we still are among the leading states in LEEDconstruction, ” said Newman. He attributes this to a group of like-minded individuals and corporations thatare joining forces to form USGBC (U S Green Building Council), which is growing exponentially as the wordgets out.

“Intelligent, integrated design which surpasses requirements of standard development projects cost less tooperate and maintain,” says Newman. “And, the key word here is surpasses. As we speak, the minimumrequirements for sustainable design are being rewritten.”
