It is a great time for Parent Teacher Asso-ciations (PTAs) to do a midyear evaluation. The following are a few items you will want to assess:• How are you doing toward your mem-
bership goals? Start planning a membership campaign for January—New year, new opportunities!
• Your budget may need to be amended because your fundraiser did much bet-ter than you predicted or the cost of something is going to be more than you initially thought.
• Evaluate your upcoming projects and programs to be sure you are meeting the
need to help increase student achievement and success.
• Are you using your newsletter, website, or social media to inform your school com-munity about the things your PTA has accomplished or about upcoming events?
The holiday season is upon us, so be sure to take some time to celebrate with your fami-ly. Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year!

I would like to suggest to all secretar-ies that they take 30 minutes and log on to the National PTA website and do the Lo-cal Unit Secretary training. This online training course takes about 30 minutes and contains a lot of wonderful and useful information. It really breaks down every-thing you might need to know or might come across in doing your job as secretary. It also has lots of sample minutes, ballots, motion forms, and even a seven-question test at the end. I learned so much, and it was presented in an easy format. Here is how you get to the training:
1. Go to www.pta.org/elearning. If you have not created an online National PTA pro-file, you will need to do this. Don’t worry; it’s easy.
2. There are many courses to choose from. The secretary course is called Local Unit Secretary and is under the heading “PTA Nuts and Bolts Series.”
I hope that every secretary takes the time to check out this valuable resource. I think you will find it very insightful!Autumn Neagle, Secretary

February 15–19, 2015 National PTA Take Your Family to School Week is celebrated each February to pay tribute to PTA’s legacy; en-courage strong family engagement; and high-light the importance of partnerships among parents, teachers, and school administrators in supporting student achievement. This an-nual celebration is timed to honor the day that National PTA was founded: February 17, 1897. This year, Take Your Family to School Week will be held from February 16 through 20, 2016. The week’s events are designed to help schools: • Increase family engagement in education. • Show families interactive ways to support student achievement in
reading and math. • Increase student access to arts education, which is proven to
increase attendance rates, family engagement, and social connect-edness to school.
• Build safe, supportive environments with healthy student relation-ships through bullying prevention and cultural awareness activities.
Family-school partnerships are the cornerstone of Take Your Family to School Week because research shows that family involvement sup-ports student success. Students with involved parents are more likely to: • Earn higher grades and pass their classes. • Attend school regularly. • Have better social skills and improved self-esteem. • Graduate and pursue postsecondary education. PTA’s National Standards for Family-School Partnerships were de-veloped with national experts and reflect the most recent research about how parents, schools, and communities can work together to support student achievement. They include the following: • Standard 1—Welcoming All Families Into the School Communi-
ty. Families are active participants in the life of the school and feel welcome, valued, and connected to each other, to school staff, and to what students are learning and doing in class.
• Standard 2—Communicating Effectively. Families and school staff engage in regular, two-way, meaningful communication about stu-dent learning.
• Standard 3—Supporting Student Success. Families and school staff continuously collaborate to support students’ learning and healthy development, both at home and at school, and have regu-lar opportunities to strengthen their knowledge and skills to do so effectively.
• Standard 4—Speaking Up for Every Child. Families are empow-ered to be advocates for their own and other children to ensure that
Take Your Family to School Weekstudents are treated fairly and have access to learning opportuni-ties that will support their success.
• Standard 5—Sharing Power. Families and school staff are equal partners in decisions that affect children and families and together inform; influence; and create policies, practices, and programs.
• Standard 6—Collaborating With Community. Families and school staff collaborate with community members to connect students, families, and staff to expanded learning opportunities, community services, and civic participation.
The first thing you must decide is what kind of events to offer. Na-tional PTA suggests that you plan to host two family education events
during Take Your Family to School Week. Keep PTA’s National Stan-dards for Family-School Partnerships in mind when making your plans in order to ensure successful events that welcome all families, communicate effectively, and support student suc-cess. Download the Take Your Family to School Week Event Guides to help you decide which event is best for your
school community. For more information, visit www.pta.org/tyftsw.Eddie Squires, First Vice President—Programs
