This week: Reports Attendance Teacher quality Reporting in Semester 1 2013 Teachers will continue to report against syllabus outcomes using an A – E reporting scale in Mathematics but will provide specific information about numeracy or Mathematics achievement against the clusters on the respective continuum on a separate report instead of a comment on the report form. Please view the numeracy continuum here: http://numeracycontinuum.com/ Teachers in K – 2 have been effectively using the numeracy continuum as part of the Best Start initiative for a number of years at Kincumber PS. Teachers in Years 3 – 6 will be reporting using the Mathematics continuum. Please view the Maths continuum here: http://www.curriculumsupport.education.nsw.gov.au/primary/ mathematics/assets/pdf/continuum/k_10_continuum.pdf As a result, the comments section of English and Maths will contain the notation “Please refer to the provided continuum” instead of the usual comment. Also included in this semester’s report is a section that indicates information about the current individualised learning plans for your child. The literacy and numeracy and Maths continuums are about four pages each and along with the actual report, the plastic sleeve of information you will receive on the last day of term will be quite large. If your child will not be at school on this day and you would like the report mailed to you, please provide a stamped, self-addressed A4 sized envelope by 26 June to the office. Attendance Regular attendance at school is essential if students are to maximise their potential. International research demonstrates a strong correlation between student learning, attendance at school and improved life outcomes. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve educational success, and increase their career and life options. Parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children. As part of my legal obligations, I have a responsibility to accept or not accept a parent’s explanation for their child’s absences and I may request further information, including medical certificates, from parents for long or frequent absences, even when explained as being due to illness. I periodically review attendance records and when a child’s attendance rate falls below 85%, I refer children to the school’s Learning Support Team whose recommendations may include referral to more senior officers in the department or other authorities. Please provide an explanation, either in writing on the green forms we provide for this purpose, or by phone within two days of an absence and aim to have your children at school, on time, most of the time. Teacher quality I must be the luckiest principal in the world to have such committed and wonderful teaching staff! This year as part of our school plan, we have been implementing strategies to better individualise instruction and differentiate according to student need. This is really just a fancy way of saying that we are trying really hard to teach your child exactly what they need and support them better. I have asked teachers to learn many new things, make many changes to their teaching practice, program differently and this has increased their workload considerably. They may have complained quietly to themselves, just a little, but everyone has had a red hot go and produced some brilliant results. Despite significant restructuring and many changes to the Department of Education and Communities over the last twelve months, teachers at Kincumber Public School have maintained a very strong focus on continuous improvement in their classrooms. I could not be prouder or more impressed with them. There are some amazing things happening in your local public school! Hope you had a great week at our great school. Teacher quality Reporting in Semester 1 2013

information about numeracy or Mathematics achievement against the clusters on the respective continuum on a separate report

instead of a comment on the report form. Please view the numeracy continuum here: http://numeracycontinuum.com/

KINDER 2014

2014 please pass on this information to them.

Crunch&Sip Why should children eat more fruit and vegetables?

We all know fruit and vegetables are good for us, and they

taste great! They are packed full of vitamins and minerals that are important for growth and development and are a

source of dietary fibre, which prevents constipation.

Regularly eating diets high in fruit and vegetables also protects us against a number of diseases.

More than 87% of primary school age children in NSW do

not consume the recommended amount of vegetables. This places them at risk of developing disease, such as

diabetes, later in life.

Crunch&Sip ensures students are consuming at least one serve of fruit or vegetable each day, and can help increase

the total number of serves they are eating each day.

So encourage your child to eat fruit and veg at home and at school. And don’t forget to send some fruit and

vegetables to school each day for your child to enjoy

during Crunch&Sip break!

Why shouldn’t students eat snacks like muesli bars or fruit leathers during Crunch&Sip?

Foods such as fruit-topped muesli bars and fruit leathers

are often high in sugar and energy, and low in other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Fruit and

vegetables are lower in energy and high in nutrients, making them the ideal snack option.

Fruit leathers, roll-ups and sticky muesli bars also have

the tendancy to cling to teeth, which increases the risk of tooth decay.

Fruit and vegetables are the only foods allowed to be eaten during the Crunch&Sip break.
