Presentation Day 10am
Throughout September and October 2017 our team worked with five schools in rural towns of Fiji to identify the needs of the children at these schools and to supply students with resources to increase their quality of education. Hygiene supplies and educational tools were distributed throughout the schools during presentations as well as workshops advocating the importance of hygiene and good physical and mental health. During this project scholarships were distributed to students in need of financial assistance to improve their performance in school and to make life a little easier. Our team identified where assistance was required most and developed a relationship with this school. Nawai School currently maintains a boarding house for girls who reside in the interior of Fiji or on remote islands. This provides girls with the opportunity to get an education and complete their secondary schooling. Our team identified the poor state of the current boarding house and are now focusing on improving the facility to better accommodate the students. We also aim to increase the number of girls residing in the boarding house to ensure more needy students can receive the education they deserve.
2018 Proposal - In July 2018 we will be sending a team to work at Nawai
School, Fiji. The aim of this project is to create a sustainable project that will continue to impact on the lives of students for years to come. This project will also be self-sufficient in that the school can easily maintain our work for years to come.
Rationale for project
When children’s basic needs are not met, accessing their learning at school becomes very difficult. The girls who live in the hostel are living there for three months at a time, hundreds of kilometres from their family. They are living there because they crave education and are aware of its impact on their lives
and futures. We want to create an environment in the hostel that is a home away from home, as well as designing extra-curriculum activities that will stimulate these girls physically and mentally, therefore enhancing their wellbeing. This is a sustainable project as it will continue to impact on the lives of girls and their education for years to come. Molly Langley and Ms Ellie Dennis with Rotary International

Dear Parents and Community
Welcome back to another busy term at NHHS. Yearly examinations will be held in the following
weeks: Year 10 in Week 5, Year 7, 8 and 9 in Week 6. Students will receive information as to what
they have to study for as we get closer to these dates. Year 11 have officially started their HSC year
and all students will have their first assessment tasks before the end of the term.
Year 10 will participate in WRALS from Week 6 to Week 9. WRALS is a program that all Year 10
students at NHHS participate in after their final exams. During this program Year 10 students will
complete two weeks work experience and also be given the opportunity to obtain credentials that
assist them in finding employment once they leave school. The WRALS program would be one of
the best programs in NSW for Year 10 students in providing them with the opportunity to both engage with the workforce
and to learn some of the skills required for when they officially join the workforce. I would like to thank Mr Horan for the work
he does in organising this exceptional program.
Our positive level excursions will run on Friday 8th December. Students who have reached gold level will be invited to travel
to Dreamworld. Presentation Day will be Monday 11th December.
During rollcall this week all students received a letter about our uniform shop moving to online sales from 2018 . A copy of
the letter is also enclosed this newsletter.
As always, please contact me at the school if you have any queries as to your child’s education.
Highlight of the fortnight:
The school assembly on Thursday where our Year 12 student representatives were welcomed to office by the school and
their parents or guardians who pinned the badges on. Well done to Caroline Higgins, Jacob Fidirikkos, Molly Langley, Sam
Russo, Kyiesha Siemsen and Kian Coggan and I look forward to working with you all in 2018.

Tasman Malouf attended the National Art
School again during the last school
holidays. She chose and was accepted
into Life Drawing classes, which is very
hard to get into. Tasman thoroughly
enjoyed the course. She is pictured here
with some of her work from her time in
Sydney. Tasman creates beautiful work,
we look forward to seeing her
accomplishments if the future.
Congratulations to our three State Athletics representatives - Isabella Ronan, Indigo Sharp and Isaac Hodnett-Daly. These
students travelled to Sydney to compete in the CHS Athletics held at Homebush late in Term 3. Isaac competed in numerous
events coming away with some personal best results.

State Representatives
So, you may (or may not) have heard of Nambucca Valley Youth Force.
Our school was asked to participate in an active group in the Valley. The SRC decided to become involved and elected three students to be on the committee - Kawana Crowe, Keeley Waters and myself (Caroline Higgins) were elected to take part. Our first official meeting was last week in Bowraville where we covered many topics, such as feeling unsafe in the community, no fun events for the youth in the Valley and nowhere to hang out.
What is the Youth Force, you might be asking???
The FORCE is a group of students from Macksville, Bowraville and Nambucca Heads High Schools that have a voice in the community and can raise ideas and issues that may arise in relation to the community’s youth, which is YOU!!
This project started at the end of 2016 with the help of community members and mentors. Since then another three very productive meetings have been held.
The aim of the FORCE is to bring young people together, have fun and have a voice in the Valley, so let’s be heard!
We have the opportunity to run events in and out of school that you can be involved in for free or for only a few bucks! They may include sporting, art, music or academic based events.
A current event that the FORCE is working on is a Gala Day that involves competing against our rivals Macksville and Bowraville High schools in a range of activities such as; Dodge ball, Capture the flag, Bull rush ,Sack races, and Oz Tag
It’s a similar concept to our schools of origin day that is held at the end of each year.
Come and see us or the SRC if you have any ideas with activities!!!
Also, the FORCE is in need of a logo that can be used on T-shirts, in newsletters and for advertising purposes. So try your hand at designing a logo on paper or digitally for the chance to win vouches worth up to $200 at local shops. Your design must include the name NVYF (shortened Nambucca Valley Youth Force). Entries are due before the 30th October so get designing!! More information will be posted on the notice board outside Miss Marshalls Office.
So, what can you do to help us!?!
Take part in events or they will be unable to run
Keep a look out for an upcoming Facebook page in the next few weeks that will keep you posted on events

Career’s News Year 12
Year 12 are in the throes of finishing their exams, good luck! Pupils are reminded to arrange their UAC preferences to
correspond with their Early Entry applications. UNE and Southern Cross University (STAR Scheme) Early Entries are the
exception, as they are being processed directly by the Universities. So a pupil’s UAC preference does not need to include
UNE or SCUni for the early round offers.
REMEMBER, once you have received and accepted, any round offer to change your UAC preferences to match your next
round preferred courses.
Year 11
Year 11 have now completed their subject interviews as part of organising their study pattern for the HSC. Pupils who intend to change subjects (where allowable or drop subjects) need to return their “change of subject / unit” yellow form after all signatures are obtained (including parents/carers) before they can change their timetable. Any parents with questions regarding the process or implications are very welcome to contact the Careers Adviser (02 6568 6777) to organise to meet or have a chat. Changes to a student’s subjects may affect their HSC / ATAR compliance (ATAR being a rank given by Universities when offering positions in university courses).

Over the past weeks a range of students from across the school have been involved in exchange projects with our Indian partner school, Indirapuram Public School in New Delhi. The focus of this project was: Melting Pot of Cultures. Indian students explored about dance, costume and cuisines of Japan, Australia and the U.K. Indirapuram students learnt, performed and shared a traditional Australian dance with 7 Warren and 8 Reebok and in return, Nambucca Heads High School had the opportunity to share an instructional video of indigenous dances and culture lead by James Donovan and a team consisting of: Chris Duckett, Damien Mitchell, Jerrai Dahlstrom, Jonah Edwards and Jye Herring. 7 Warren also had the opportunity to experiment with Indian food and made and shared Samosas.
Dancing up a Storm During the recent school holidays Shelayna Boorer competed at the
Port Macquarie Eisteddfod. Shelayna competed in twenty solo
dances once again wowing the judges with her performances. Her
results were as follows: 4 x 1st; 4 x 2nd; 1 x 3rd and 6 x Highly
Commended. Shelayna also took part in the Scholarship Class on
Sunday morning (8/10/17) and was one of only seven dancers
selected from thirty participants to perform at the Gala Concert and
Award Ceremony on Sunday night for the scholarship. Shelayna was
awarded a Highly Commended in the Scholarship and was presented
with three major awards at the Presentation.
School and Community Notices
The Department of Education has implemented a new finance
system. Individual schools are no longer able to process cash or
cheque refunds of payments. If, for any reason, a refund is to be
made it can be done electronically (bank details will need to be
provided) or by cheque through the Department's new finance
department, EDConnect. Alternatively, the amount to be refunded
can be held in credit against the student for whom the payment was
made. This credit can then be matched against unpaid fees or future
miscellaneous costs.
On Thursday September 21st Year 9 students travelled to South West Rocks to visit the historic Trial Bay Gaol, as part of their study of Australia and World War I. On arriving at the Gaol, we had recess (lovely cakes provided by Miss Lockyer) and then proceeded to the German Monument, erected by German interns, for five men who had died during their incarceration.
Students then toured the Gaol itself, studying what life was like for Germans forced to be there during World War I.
I would like to thank Miss Louise Lockyer and Miss Dakota Hillery for being
involved in the site study. Mr Stephen Elsley
