Holy Family Day School:This time next month we will be entering into a new calendar year. But first, let’s relish every moment of this joyous season as we enter the new liturgical year and prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. In chapel and the classrooms, we are talking about waiting patiently. Oftentimes the quality of being patient is hard to find in today’s society. Take time out this Advent to slow down and savor some quiet time – make room in your life for Jesus Christ!

Weekly Wisdom

Advent blessings to you! During this time of reflection and anticipation, we continue our journey through the Mass and will be focusing on the second half of the Mass – the Liturgy of the Eucharist – the Source and Summit of our faith.

• Fraction Rite The priest breaks off a piece of the main host and places

it in the cup. This is a symbol of unity. We are called to be one body of believers. After the breaking of the bread we sing or recite The Lamb of God, which asks for mercy and ends with the petition to “grant us peace.”

“Walk Through the Mass:”Have you always wondered why we do what we do during Mass? Are you looking to brush up on the Parts of the Mass? Then join us this Sunday, December 18, between the Masses for an engaging and enlightening walk through the Mass. We will gather in Family Room A and end in the Chapel. All are welcome!

“CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players:”Bishop Robert Barron’s “CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players” showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization. Journey with Bishop Barron beginning Sunday, January 22, (between the Masses) to explore the lasting influence of these Pivotal Players. See flyer and registration form in this bulletin.

Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147.

Have a blessed week, Your AFF Team

THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY CELEBRATION: Join us on Saturday, December 31, after the 5:30 p.m. Mass, for a celebration of our patron saints. There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, Music, and Fun!

Bishop Robert Barron’s CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization. Journey with Bishop Barron to explore the lasting influence of these Pivotal Players. ST. FRANCIS of ASSISI, the Reformer, radically and literally lived as Jesus commanded to transform the Church. ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, the Theologian, demonstrated that faith and reason are not at odds, as they come from the same source. ST. CATHERINE of SIENA, the Mystic, gave testimony to the reality of the spiritual dimension here and beyond. BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, the Convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith. G.K. CHESTERTON, the Evangelist, publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of Christianity. MICHEL ANGELO, the Artist, dramatically demonstrated that beauty and creativity are a primary route of access to God.

PRAYERS FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THE MILITARY: Every Friday, we say the Patriotic Rosary after morning Mass. Everyone is welcome. If you have a family member in the military and would like us to pray for them by name, please email Mary Sorrentino at [email protected] with their name, and branch of service. Please remember that we still have military members in harm’s way and keep them in your daily prayers.

ATTENTION, K-5 AND EDGE PARENTS:Reverse Advent Reminder:A friendly reminder that as a family you should be participating in the Reverse Advent project with your children/teens – praying the prayer listed on the bag and prayerfully placing your list-specific items in the bag for the Food Pantry. Remember this is your family’s “gift” to the baby Jesus and should be brought back to the church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (Drop off location: Atrium or Library). Thank you for your support of what we hope will become a new Holy Family tradition.

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS: “When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord directed him.” Are you prayerfully vigilant about discovering your vocation in Christ? Might He be inviting you to the priesthood? Call Father Michael Boehling at 804-359-5661 or e-mail at [email protected].

“CREATION CARE CORNER”The commercial world has created the mindset in us that giving this time of the year means presents. So, in our interest to bring happiness to friends and loved ones we shop and buy more and more stuff. Gift-giving, though, is certainly noble and definitely has a special place in our lives. We can be helpful to our environment by considering what we give, and how much we give. Helpful suggestions locally would be:• Restoring polluted water bodies by supporting Elizabeth

River Project and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. • Preserving choice lands from development by supporting

Eastern Shore Conservation. • Prevention of off shore drilling, the pipeline and promoting

clean air by supporting The Sierra Club. Non-local suggestions are: • The protection of choice forests in southeast USA by

supporting Dogwood Alliance.• The protection of whales among other actions by supporting

Greenpeace. • Providing families/individuals suffering poverty throughout

the world with the means to start their own businesses by supporting Heifer International.

Money can be contributed in honor of loved ones to any of these or other numerous organizations, which work for the well-being of our Earth and Her resources.
