The level of musical talent at Essex Heights never fails to amaze me and I would like to thank our talented instrumental teachers for their skill and dedication to developing the skills and musical appreciation of our students. Staff will utilise this day to finalise assessment and reporting requirements. Annual Essex Heights Book Fair

I draw your attention to the annual Book Fair that is taking place in the Library. This is a great opportunity to purchase books at a very good price, encourage your children’s reading habits and also support the Essex Heights Library. We receive a commission on total sales that is used to purchase new books for the Library which is a great bonus for us. Thanks to Katrina George, our Library Technician, for her work in organising the Fair and managing the sales.

Please see the details in this Contact for days and times.

Class Visit – 2W

I spent time in 2W last Friday during a unique literacy session. As this was just before Mother’s Day, that was the focus of the activities. I began by reading the children a book called ‘The Fish Wish’. This set the scene for an interesting discussion about what mothers might wish for on Mother’s Day. We then had a small group discussion on what might be a ‘small’ wish, a ‘medium’ wish and a ‘BIG’ wish. This certainly generated a lively debate ……. and some interesting insights into what Mums like! (My favourite small wish was …..”Mum can have breakfast in bed because she won’t spread crumbs everywhere”)

We then recorded our discussions on large sheets of paper and reporters were designated to present to the whole class. Following this the children wrote up Three Wishes for Mum and they placed them in a decorated box, tied with ribbon.

Whilst this was a fun and engaging activity, it was also targeted to develop the children’s skills in ‘group work’, ‘speaking and listening’ and ‘writing’.

Thanks to Carolyn Wilson for her great work in developing the literacy skills of the children in 2W, and for her leadership as Level 2 Co-ordinator.

Class visit – 2F

On Tuesday this week I was pleased to be able to spend time with the children of 2F during their literacy session. They are beginning a unit of study focussed on ‘transport’ and so we began with a small group activity based on a ‘word splash’ of transport related words. This involved talking together about what might be the common theme between the words provided. After sharing and discussing their group’s thoughts with the whole class, and considering some images on the flat screen TV, they worked individually on a written piece. They wrote sentences comparing what they already know about ‘transport’ with what they would like to find out. I was impressed with the way they tackled the task and the creative responses provided. Their ideas ranged from various energy sources used by transport to whether surf boards and skateboards could be considered transport?

The children in 2F certainly demonstrated their developing confidence across a range of literacy skills and I thank Linda Fisher for her efforts in building and extending these for the children. Thanks also to Linda for her role in developing the teaching skills of the staff as she works with Level teams on a Friday as our ‘Teaching & Learning Coach’.

From The Health Centre Just a reminder to check your child’s head regularly for head lice. Whilst children are at school, many families will have contact with head lice. Head lice are small insects that live on the scalp and lay eggs (nits) on the hair. Lice and nits may cause an itchy scalp. Head lice are common in children and their families. Medicated treatments to kill lice and nits are available. If further information or advice is required, please contact Julie Zuk, First Aid Officer.

National Walk Safely to School Day Friday May 18th 2012

Students at Essex Heights are encouraged to participate in “National Walk Safely to School day’ on Friday May 18th. For those parents/carers who have to drive, we are asking you to leave the car a reasonable distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. Designated meeting places have been arranged (see below and overleaf) so parents/carers and students can walk together the rest of the way. If you live in the area you can also meet up at one of these meeting places too! Please meet at your closest point at 8.25 am, to start walking at 8.30 am promptly. Students who have walked to school may collect a piece of fruit from the Junior School Council outside the hall. Thank you to the PFA for providing the fruit.

National Walk Safely to School Day:

Is an annual event held in Primary Schools around Australia.

Asks parents and carers to walk their primary school aged children all or part of the way to school. Those who can’t walk the whole way are asked to combine a walk with public transport or to park the car a good distance away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Encourages regular physical activity because active kids are healthy kids!

Helps to reduce hazardous traffic congestion in and around schools, creating pedestrian-safe areas for children entering or leaving school.

Is a way parents, teachers, carers and students can help ease global warming and climate change, as they reduce car-dependency.

Teaches children healthy lifestyle habits from a young age as they learn that walking is the best form of exercise. It’s easy, free and almost anyone can do it at anytime. And these habits tend to last a lifetime.

Meeting Places

1. Barton Street, Federal Reserve tennis courts car park, (off Jubilee Street) Teachers: Lisa Carne, Janet McGinn.

2. St Luke’s Uniting Church car park Essex Road (near corner of Park Street. Please do not park on kindergarten side. Teachers: Margaret Fitzpatrick, Felicity O’Flynn.
