May 2019 1 The Chief’s Corner Clansmen, the Tartan Ball was another excellent event put on by 1 st Chieftain Ian Purvis and his committee. The photo booth was a fun touch and the entertainment by Full Steem was again augmented by the addition of the vocals of Charity. The “Ode to John Barleycorn”, a Burns’ poem performed by our 3 rd Chieftain, Willie Hardie, can now be considered a Tartan Ball tradition. The Prince Charles Pipe Band was brilliant this year. Add to that, a great highland dance performance from “Clan Davis”, and the introduction of Scottish ceilidh dancing, it was truly an excellent evening. We are lucky to have such talent associated with our club. Next up will be the annual Past Chiefs and Old Timers Night on Friday May 17 th . Bangers and mash, along with mushy peas prepared by PC Davie Scott, are the bill of fare for the night. Not just for old timers, it’s a chance for clansmen to get together in a casual atmosphere and hear stories about the “Auld days when I was Chief”. Members are invited to come and enjoy a pint or a wee dram in a night of camaraderie. Past Chiefs Night is always a casual affair for the men only (who else would want to hear these stories). See flyer at the end of the newsletter for more information. Plans for the 154 th Games are well underway. The committee is working very hard to make this the best games ever. If you want to be part of the fun and effort of putting on the games, join us at a Games Committee meeting or contact me anytime and we will find a place for you. Many hands make light work! Our next Games Committee meeting will be at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Saturday May 18 th starting at 10am. The meeting will be in the Administration Building, which is just to the right of the Yellow Gate on Pleasanton Avenue. We will be meeting with the Fairground’s personnel to find out what changes are taking place, and to go over any concerns you may have about the venue. Afterwards, we will stay and conduct our monthly games meeting, in lieu of the meeting scheduled for May 20 th . Children’s Glen chairman, Philip Dahnken, is looking for some help, both with set up, and running the event over the weekend. If you can lend a hand, please contact Philip directly. I hope to see you all you old timers and new timers at the Past Chiefs Night! Yours aye Rob Tysinger Caledonian Herald The Newsletter of the Caledonian Club of San Francisco
