CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
May I please thank all members that brought plates of food to the Christmas Party on the 19th;
once again it was like a banquet.
I wish to thank the kitchen staff, Ken, Viv and Cindy for their hard work during the afternoon, also
Angela Hodson-Hirst and Rob Harry for being there from eleven in the morning ‘til close of play’.
It was a long day for all.
I would also like to thank all of you who donated raffle prizes, this turned out to be tremendous and
I am pleased to say we collected £197.00 for St. David’s Palliative Care.
I want to thank the Ukulele Group who very kindly played Christmas Carols at the beginning of the
afternoon which all members aired their vocals too and enjoyed.
I want to thank the Drama Group for their rendition of a mini Cinderella panto given all in rhyme
which continued the entertainment. In all I think the afternoon was a great success.
As you all know, it is our 25th Anniversary in May of 2020 and at present we are making
preparations to celebrate this throughout the 25th year. The actual party will be held on June 18th
thereby ensuring most of our members will be available to attend this function. Plans are ongoing
and one suggestion is that on the day of the event everyone attending should wear something
Silver. This sounds good to me.
When you read this Newsletter we will be into 2020 when January is our time to be entertained by
the pupils of Caldicot Comprehensive. In the meantime
HAVE A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR

GARDENING
MEETING 14TH NOVEMBER 2019
Helen Mugridge gave our group a very interesting talk and showed us how she and her husband
changed their third of an acre garden into a wildlife friendly garden.
Her photographs showed how they started by rotivating and laying out the ground to create a good
habitat, including a wildlife pond, also ‘laying down’ of hedges surrounding the garden to
encourage as much wildlife as possible. As we all know, so many of our hedgerows and trees have
been cut down.
A little “hideout” is moved around the garden to enable taking beautiful photographs of colourful
birds, including insects, dragonflies and frogs in the pond.
We can all help to encourage more wildlife into our gardens by planting continually through the
Seasons. Starting in Spring with the many wildflowers such as cowslips, wild daffodils,
cornflowers, antirrhinum, aquilegia and flowering shrubs that produce seed heads that the bees and
birds enjoy feeding on. To keep encouraging the birds to feed naturally in the garden, leave any
seed heads on in the Autumn and do not “tidy up” too much, so that it gives a good habitat for
them.
Whilst enjoying our usual ‘cuppa’ at the end of our meeting, we were able to look at the leaflets
and cards that Helen had brought along.
6TH DECEMBER 2019 WESTONBIRT TRIP
Arriving, just as it was getting dark in the afternoon, our Gardening Group visited Westonbirt
Enchanted Christmas Lights. We enjoyed a leisurely walk through the trees, meeting many
“Christmas Fairies” along the way. Their costumes were beautiful and really blended into the
trees. Children went to the “launch pad” of Father Christmas and to the sound of a rocket
launching with flashing lights started Father Christmas on his journey – so we were told!
A talking tree greeted us to the Enchanted Trail and many trees were colourfully lit up along the
walk. One section gave the effect of the Northern Lights above.
The Big Wheel lit up a small fair and side stalls selling refreshments – many of us trying the hot
chocolate and mulled wine. The Shop and Restaurant was open and also a large marquee with
Christmas stalls with tables and benches where we were able to sit and eat hot-dogs, pulled pork in
a roll, chips etc.
It was lovely to see so many families with young children enjoying the excitement of Christmas.
MEETING 12TH DECEMBER 2019
Carrying on a Christmas theme from our trip to Westonbirt, we had a demonstration on
constructing a traditional holly wreath, along with a colourful display of holly wreaths and
arrangements.
Many of our members took home a dish filled with oasis to complete a Christmas table
arrangement for the main monthly meeting Christmas Party on the 19th December.
After the demonstration, we all enjoyed Christmas buffet along with our usual cup of tea or coffee.
A big thank you, to all those who helped
Happy Christmas and wishing all a good New Year in 2020

HISTORY
For the November meeting, the History Group had a talk entitled ‘A Young Lad Playing in the
Street’ by Brian Wallace, a founder member of Caldicot U3A.
Brian chose this as the title because as a boy, he was completely unaware of the history around him
as he was ‘playing in the street’.
Brian was raised in Treforest, near Pontypridd; its history has much in common with many other
south Wales towns and villages, the reasons for their existence being coal and iron. The Crawshay
family was best known for making iron at Merthyr Tydfil, but they also established ironworks and
tinworks in places such as Hirwaun (near Aberdare), Coleford (Forest of Dean) and Treforest.
Iron made in Merthyr and Hirwaun was transported to one or other of the tinplate works for coating
with tin. Also iron was sent to customers all over the world. The family was sufficiently large to
have a Crawshay in charge of important functions.
When one of the coal owners constructed a railway line between the coalfields and Barry Dock,
Francis Crawshay arranged for an extension which could carry people to Barry Island, thus
providing a convenient resort for holidaymakers from the valleys of south Wales.

Welsh Rarebit
How on earth did a Welshman ascend the throne of England? Through a woman, of course, the
power behind the throne! The woman was Margaret Beaufort, a descendant of Edward III, on the
wrong side of the blanket! She married Edmond Tudor and bore him a son at the age of 15. The
year was 1457, and from thereon she was absolutely determined that her son, Henry, would become
King of England.
These were turbulent times, the Wars of the Roses raged through the land, won mainly by the
Yorkists (White Rose). Lady Margaret was a Lancastrian, (Red Rose). She spirited away the
young Henry to France for his safety, but he was soon back raising an army and defeating Richard
111 on Bosworth Field. Richard lost more than his horse that day and Henry was crowned King.
He then married a Yorkist Princess, uniting the two Houses, and creating the red and white Tudor
Rose.
Another Welsh Rarebit
Now we come to Henry V111, who when he wasn't chasing Anne Boleyn, around the bedroom,
found the time to turn his attention to Wales. He needed to bind Wales closer to England and in
1543 England assimilated Wales into an Act of Union. The Marcher Lordships were abolished and
13 Counties were established. But a difficulty arose over Monmouthshire, which remained a 'spare'
county. Hence we were known as England, Wales and Monmouthshire. This situation prevailed
until 1974 when 8 large counties were established, followed two decades later in favour of 22
unitary authorities.

R.N.L.I
Thank you to all U3A members who supported the R.N.L.I Christmas Fayre.
We raised £530.00 and in addition sold cards, calendars and other R.N.L.I. goods to the value of
£275.00. A very pleasing result!

SPECIAL EVENTS
CAERNARVON - MONDAY 10th – FRIDAY 14th FEBRUARY 2020
THE CELTIC ROYAL HOTEL
This holiday is now all paid for and the normal information regarding itinerary etc. will be
delivered to you in the New Year.
JERSEY – WEDNESDAY 13th MAY - MONDAY 18th MAY 2020 - £545pp (PLUS SS)
MAYFAIR HOTEL, ST HELIER
For those of you who are coming to Jersey in May 2020 here is some information for you regarding
the actual trip.
I have now been informed that we shall be flying out of Cardiff Airport and unfortunately this will
mean an early start for all of us as the flight is at 9:45am. We will have to be at the airport for
8:00am. We will arrive in Jersey at 10:45am and as normal we will be unable to register into the
hotel until the afternoon. Our return journey we will leave Jersey 18th May at 11:20am and arrive
in Cardiff at 12:20pm. Obviously I will update you on all arrangements nearer the date.
A coach will pick you up as usual at the designated pick-up points and will take us to Cardiff
Airport where you will check in yourselves. A coach will be at the Jersey Airport to take us to the
Mayfair Hotel St. Hellier. I have not arranged excursions for the duration of the holiday as we
would have to hire a coach there which would add to the price. There are two ladies at the hotel
who arrange excursions each day and they will advise you where and what days certain trips are
available and, if you are interested they will book these for you. Other than that you are free to do
and go where you like.
The duration of the holiday is 6 days we leave on Wednesday the 13th May and return Monday and
18th. Unfortunately we have been charged single supplement on all single rooms at £115.00 per
room but please don’t despair as I am trying to arrange that you will not have to pay this amount by
yourselves. I will inform you of the extra nearer the time. I am sorry this has to be paid but it is
entirely out of my hands.
I will be requiring the balances for this holiday at the latest the March monthly meeting.
It is strongly advised that you ensure you are adequately covered by insurance. Edwards can
offer this at £44.00 per person subject to policy terms and conditions.
THE KING AND I - BRISTOL HIPPODROME 25th MARCH 2020
This is all paid for now and I have the tickets which will be handed to you on the coach when we
go as I don’t want anyone losing theirs before the day.
Just to remind you all that there will be extra to pay for the coach which I have yet to organise. I
will inform you all before the date.
Thank you all for your support.
Pam Caines
DRAMA
I am pleased to say that our little mini panto Red Hot Cinders was well received at the Christmas
Party and enjoyed by most.
We will next be presenting a Who Dunnit in March as part of our contribution to the 25th
Anniversary celebrations. This will be the first of five which we hope to do throughout the year.
So watch this space as we will be asking you at the end of each one “Who Dunnit!”
Pam Caines
SUNDAY LUNCHES
I am undecided as to whether I shall continue with the Sunday Lunches as numbers have dropped
and although I ask for you to advise me if you will be attending it ends up with me having to phone
around and this takes time.
If you wish me to continue in the New Year then please let me know otherwise I shall call it a day.
Thank you all for your support.

CALDICOT & CHEPSTOW LIONS
During the Christmas period, the Lion’s club organised a collection at Waitrose in Caldicot and

also offering them a few niceties’ like chocolates , biscuits, etc YES even a packet of CRISPS.
Grateful thanks, to all who supported this venture again this year, by donating food and/or money.
Thanks also to Caldicot Methodist Church for the use of their premises to enable the Lions to make
up the parcels.

For information did you know?
The Lions have bought and funded 29 Defibrillators hoping that no.30 will be available this month,
