HEAD TEACHER’S INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Caldervale High School Handbook for 2019-2020. I hope it provides you with
useful information about the school - our staff and facilities, our aims and objectives and our place
in the local community.
Our principal aim is to provide the best education possible and to do so by working in close partnership
with parents/carers. We try to make sure that all our pupils are known to us as individuals and to
provide for the individual needs of each person. We encourage all students to work as hard as they
possibly can and to achieve their best, in terms of academic results. At the same time we give
opportunities for personal development in a variety of different ways. Our intention is that every young
person achieves the maximum benefit from his or her time in Caldervale High School.
This handbook provides information and advice about the daily life of the school, so please retain it
for future reference. We will provide regular updates on your child's progress and opportunities for
you to visit the school during your child's time with us. In addition to this, Pupil Support Staff provide
a first point of contact for parents/carers who may wish to discuss a particular matter with us.
Parents/Carers of Primary 7 pupils will be invited to a meeting in Caldervale High School on Thursday
16 May and the pupils will spend two days in school on 15 and 16 May 2019.
I look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child's learning and development.
In the meantime, if I can be of any further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me at
the school.

Caldervale High School has strong links with all of its associated primary schools. Curricular, pastoral
and social links between Caldervale High School and its associated primary schools are very healthy
and are continually being strengthened. The co-operation between the schools greatly benefits both staff
and pupils.
Planning and matters of mutual interest are discussed at various meetings throughout the session
involving primary Head Teachers, the Head Teacher and/or Depute Head Teacher from Caldervale.
Primary 7 pupils participate in a number of visits to Caldervale High School throughout the session.
The purpose of these visits is to familiarise the pupils with Caldervale High School, to give them a taste
of the secondary curriculum, to allow them to meet various staff and to come in contact with pupils
from other associated primaries.
Subject and Pupil Support Staff visit all primary schools to meet with P7 pupils and to discuss various
matters with primary staff in preparation for pupils joining us in S1.
A series of P7 information evenings are organised in October/May to give details of the
primary/secondary liaison arrangements to parents/carers.
With its extensive range of resources, Caldervale High School is always ready to give assistance to all
of its associated primaries in terms of equipment and expertise.

RAISING ACHIEVEMENT FOR ALL Raising Achievement for All forms the overarching strategy for
Education and Families. Subtitled ‘Experiences to Last a Lifetime’,
this strategy aims to harness the combined forces of Education and
Families to provide a rich set of learning opportunities and
experiences for young people and adults which begin in the
classroom, nursery or learning centre and extend out into the
community and the wider world beyond. In seeking to offer
‘Experiences to Last a Lifetime’, we will also look to draw upon ‘a
lifetime of experiences’ already there in the communities which make
up North Lanarkshire.
IMPROVEMENT PLAN TARGETS 2018-19

FACULTY HEADS/PRINCIPAL TEACHERS Faculty Heads/Principal Teachers (Subject) are responsible to the Head Teacher for the management
and development of their subject disciplines. They formulate schemes of work, prepare examination
papers and assessments and maintain standards of work and discipline within their departments. For
SQA examinations they make recommendations regarding presentations to the Head Teacher
and act as specialist advisers for their subjects.
PUPIL SUPPORT
The aim of Pupil Support in Caldervale High School is to
promote a framework within which each pupil can develop
according to his/her academic, social and personal requirements
and become a responsible member of the community.
From S1 to S6 the school is divided into 3 Houses – Erskine,
Morton and Scobbie.
The Pupil Support staff are available to pupils in the House
Office during the course of the day. Parents/carers who wish to
contact the school regarding pupils should telephone the
appropriate member of the Pupil Support staff.
Principal Teachers (Pupil Support) are responsible for the pastoral care of pupils in their House. They
carefully and constantly review pupils’ progress, attendance, time-keeping, attitude and behaviour and
maintain personal records. Should there be any concerns, a parent/carer’s first approach should be
to the Principal Teacher (Pupil Support), although it may be necessary to refer some matters to a
member of the Senior leadership Team. It cannot be emphasised too strongly that a close link between
parents/carers and Pupil Support Staff is vital if the pupil is to enjoy the full benefits of education at
Caldervale. Each House is overseen by a Depute Head Teacher.

CONSULTATION The Depute Head Teachers deal with questions relating to course choice, subject choice and progress
at every stage throughout the school.
Pupil Support Staff deal with the everyday welfare and pastoral care of pupils in their House group
including illness, absence and personal problems.
Parents or carers wishing to consult the school regarding course choice should, in the first place,
contact the Senior Staff most closely involved with the pupil, either by telephone or on a visit by
appointmentp. Where
applicable, the matter will be
referred to the Head Teacher.
All visitors to school must first
report to reception who will
contact a senior member of
staff. Parents/Carers are advised
to make appointments by
telephone in order to avoid the
possibility of a lengthy wait.
SOME PRACTICAL ADVICE WHEN CONTACTING THE SCHOOL It is helpful if you know the class your son/daughter is in.
For Parents’ Meetings make appointments with the teachers you wish to meet using PEBs
(electronic booking system).
If a pupil is in any way unsettled, telephone Pupil Support staff at once, remembering that the first
days in an establishment of this size can be daunting.
If you ever suspect bullying, telephone Pupil Support staff at once. We will behave with
sensitivity and discretion towards a pupil who makes such a complaint. Bullying will be
treated seriously.
A request for homework during a prolonged absence will be met as soon as possible on
application to Pupil Support staff.

SUPPORT FOR LEARNING The Learning Support department are responsible for the following:
organisation of The Road to Learning Programme for all S1 and S2 pupils. This is a 'learning about learning' course in which children work together to explore what learning
is, find out more about themselves as learners and develop skills that are needed for the process of learning
managing the Paired Reading Scheme for S1 pupils. In this scheme, trained S6 volunteers work on a one-to-one basis with S1 pupils to help them develop confidence and skills in reading
co-ordinating additional arrangements in examinations for pupils in middle and upper school
working with Pupil Support to co-ordinate the S6 volunteer project
providing information and advice for parents/carers and teachers
working with P7 pupils in primary schools and gathering information from primary teachers to
help make the transition to secondary school as smooth as possible. Teachers in the
department are available at parents' meetings.
PEF Initiatives including Read, Write Inc.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS Caldervale High School complies with Learning (Scotland) Act
2004 as amended by the Education (Additional Support for
Learning) (Scotland) Act 2009.
North Lanarkshire Council’s policy is contained within “Support for
Learning Policy into Practice 2”, a copy of which is available in the
school. The school has a Support for Learning Policy, available
from the school on request, which is consistent with North
Lanarkshire Council guidelines.
The Support for Learning Department is one part of the team that supports learning in Caldervale
High School. The department is made up of additionally trained and qualified teachers and skilled
support assistants who provide support for children in the classroom, in small groups and individually.
The main aim is to help children become independent and confident in their learning. The type of
support that the department provides for a child depends on the needs of the child and is decided in
consultation with the child and his/her parents or carers.
If you have a concern about your child’s progress in learning, or would simply like more information
about Support for Learning, you can contact the department directly or through your child’s Pupil
Support teacher.
Support is available for pupils with English as a second language from visiting specialists.
A number of pupils are identified formally as having very specific learning needs. The Education
(Additional Support for Learning) Scotland Act 2004 introduced a framework for supporting
children and young people in their school education and for their families. This framework is based on
the idea of additional support needs. This term will apply to children and young people who, for
whatever reason, require additional support, long or short-term, to help them make the most of their
school education.
Caldervale High School
Handbook 2019/19
17
Through a process of staged intervention, the school will work to support these pupils and their
families, as follows:
Level 1 – where education staff identify that a child or young person needs support or planning
which can be met within the school using classroom and whole school resources.
Level 2 – Requesting support from within Education and Families (services/resources outwith
school) eg Educational Psychologist, Community Learning and Development.
Level 3 – Requesting support from another agency (Joint working with partner agency/agencies
including third Sector). When further planning is required to further develop the wellbeing
of children and young people the Named Person may request assistance from colleagues in
partner agencies.
Level 4 – Integrated and Compulsory working with other agency/agencies. Targeted
intervention(s) required to promote the wellbeing of the child would be identified by relevant
agencies (child’s Network of Support) and included in the Child’s Plan. A Lead Professional
would be identified. At level 4 there would an expectation that a statutory Child’s Plan with
integrated assessment, integrated chronology and Lead Professional is in place.
Looked After Children ie children who are cared
for directly or whose care is supervised by the
Local Authority are deemed to have Additional
Support Needs unless assessment determines
otherwise. Mr McInally has overall responsibility
for Looked After Children.
Parents/carers and young people can request an
assessment to establish whether a child or young
person has additional needs or requires a Co-
ordinated Support Plan.
Parents/Carers and pupils are an essential part of
the assessment, planning and review processes
and your views will be actively sought.
Parents/Carers and young people can request of
the Authority to establish whether a child has
Additional Support Needs. They can also request
an assessment at any time.
PLANNING Getting it Right for Me plans (GIRFMe) enable staff to plan effectively for children and young people
with Additional Support Needs.
Some children and young people may require significant support from education and at least one other
agency, such as health, social work and/or a voluntary agency to help them meet their learning targets.
Where this support requires a high level of co-ordination the opening of a Co-ordinated Support Plan
(CSP) may be considered.
A CSP may be initiated by the school or another agency. Parents/carers and young people can,
if they wish, request that a CSP be considered and would be involved in the process. Parents/carers
will receive letters from the Education Authority throughout the CSP process. Parents/carers and
young people will be invited to take part in multi-agency meetings and their views will be recorded in
the plan.

DISPUTE RESOLUTION
North Lanarkshire Council is committed to resolving any differences of views through discussion,
dialogue and building on common ground.
If the matter cannot be resolved with the Education Authority you have the right to request
mediation. An independent mediation service is available to parents/carers and young
people through Resolve (see contact details at the back of this handbook). Mediation is free and
independent of the Education Authority.
In the event that a disagreement cannot be resolved through mediation, then an application for
Independent Adjudication (see contact details at the back of this handbook) can be made by
parents/carers free of charge. The Independent Adjudicator will make recommendations to the
Education Authority about how the dispute should be resolved.
The Additional Support Needs Tribunal has been set up to hear appeals made by parents/carers or
young people on the decisions made by the Education Authority relating to Co-ordinated Support
Plans, placing requests and post school transition. If you disagree with any decision relating to your
child’s Co-ordinated Support Plan, either the creation of a CSP, or the content of it, you may be
entitled to refer to the Tribunal.
For more information about Additional Support Needs
contact Mrs H Wilson, PT Support
for Learning.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SUPPORT CENTRE (LCSC) The Language and Communication Support Centre within Caldervale High School offers specialist
support for pupils with language and communication difficulties.
Pupils are supported in mainstream education by the Language and Communication Support Centre
team. This consists of specialist teachers, skilled additional support needs assistants, a speech and
language therapist and other external agencies.
All the pupils who are allocated a place in the centre have communication needs. Most have
difficulties associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder including Asperger Syndrome.
The main work of the Centre staff includes:
Supporting pupils to facilitate inclusion by providing support in class and at social times.
This is achieved by developing individual profiles and providing pupils with strategies to
draw upon in a range of environments. Pupils are provided with visual resources, social
skills training, anger management sessions and relaxation therapy.
Providing access to a speech and language therapist to support and develop
communication skills.
Working with parents/carers to create a positive home/school partnership through Parent
Workshops, regular contact and home/school link diaries.
Consulting with teachers and providing up-to-date information and advice on how best to
support pupils across the curriculum. In addition, teachers are offered a running programme
of workshops to develop their own knowledge and understanding of issues relating to
language and communication difficulties.
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide a holistic approach to support pupils
in the mainstream setting.

SCHOOL/COMMUNITY LINKS
It is school policy to create and maintain the closest possible links with all parts of the community it
serves. Pupils are given the opportunity of engaging in service to primary schools.
Caldervale High School works very closely with employers. The school has expanded its contacts
with local business and industry steadily over the years, through work experience opportunities and
Young Enterprise activities, for S4 and S6 students respectively.
Outwith school hours, the
Community Education Service
organises a wide variety of
classes and activities, which are
publicised in the local press and
the public library.
LETTING PROCEDURES It is North Lanarkshire Council’s Policy that, as far as possible, outwith school hours, school
accommodation should be made available for use by the community. Such use by groups, clubs etc
should be in accordance with approved letting procedures. Enquiries should be directed to Culture NL.

LIBRARY RESOURCE CENTRE
Caldervale High has a well-stocked Library Resource Centre that plays
a central role within the school community.
The librarian is responsible for the maintenance and development of
the Library Resource Centre, managing information technology within
the centre, and liaising with staff and departments to ensure the
curriculum is fully supported in terms of resources and access to the
Library Resource Centre.
ICT facilities for pupils include access to PCs, printing and
scanning facilities.
STOCK Our book stock collection has over 2000 reference and non-fiction titles and 1200 fiction titles to cater
for all reading abilities, including a small collection of graphic novels, magazines and newspapers.
INFORMATION SKILLS All S1 pupils receive a basic introduction to using the Library Resource Centre. The sessions
involve showing pupils the layout of the Library Resource Centre, how to use books in the
reference and non-fiction sections and introduces search skills using the Library Resource
Centre’s automated catalogue.
Information and study skills continue from S2 to S5/6, being taught through subject based work in
classrooms and in the Library Resource Centre.
CAREERS LIBRARY The school has an excellent careers library housed within the Library Resource Centre. It is well used
by pupils and staff and contains books, magazines, prospectuses and computer software. The school’s
careers officer works closely with the librarian to ensure the information provided is relevant and
up-to-date, and also holds a lunchtime careers ‘drop-in’ session for pupils.
LUNCHTIME OPENING Pupils can come along to the Library Resource Centre at intervals and lunchtimes for leisure reading,
private study and computer use. The librarian runs quizzes and competitions throughout the year,
highlighting events such as World Book Day, National Science Week and National Poetry Day.
BOOK GROUPS The Librarian and the English department run two book groups in the Library Resource Centre
at lunchtimes. The BOOKies group is very popular with S1/S2 pupils, while the Catalyst group is
aimed at S3/S4.

CURRICULUM WHAT IS CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE? Curriculum for Excellence aims to achieve a transformation in education in Scotland by providing an
improved, more flexible and enriched curriculum for all children and young people from 3-18. The
curriculum includes all of the experiences which are planned for children and young people through
their education, wherever they are being educated. All schools and nurseries in North Lanarkshire are
working hard to raise standards so that children and young people will develop all of the skills
necessary to continue to be successful when leaving school and entering the world of higher education,
training or work.
Curriculum for Excellence is underpinned by the values inscribed on the mace of the Scottish
Parliament – wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity.
The purpose of Curriculum for Excellence is encapsulated in the four capacities – to enable each
child or young person to be a successful learner, a confident individual, a responsible citizen and an
effective contributor.
WHAT ARE THE CURRICULUM AREAS IN CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE? There are eight curriculum areas:
Expressive Arts Religious and Moral Education
Health and Well Being Sciences
Languages (literacy) Social Studies
Mathematics (numeracy) Technologies
Importantly, literacy and numeracy are given added importance because these skills are so vital in
everyday life. All teachers will have responsibility to teach literacy and numeracy.
Learning is divided into two phases.
The Broad Education (BGE) is from nursery to the end of Secondary School Year 3. Learning is
divided into levels.
The levels are as follows:
LEVEL STAGE
Early the pre-school years and P1 or later for some
First to the end of P4, but earlier or later for some
Second to the end of P7, but earlier or later for some
Third and fourth S1-S3, but earlier for some
Senior Phase S4-S6 and college or other means of study
As part of developing skills for learning, life and work, young people will be offered careers
information advice and guidance to ensure they leave school and enter a positive post-school
destination of higher education, further education, pre-employment training, employment (including
modern apprenticeships), activity agreement or volunteering.

HOW WILL MY CHILD’S LEARNING BE ASSESSED? A variety of methods will be used in assessing each child’s progress to make sure that potential is
achieved. New qualifications are still being revised with further changes to assessment being
implemented in 2019/2020.
In classrooms staff will be using improved ways of assessing children’s learning taking account of
national and local advice and guidance. Your child’s progress will be reported to you so that you know
how well your child is doing.
Each year your school will let you know what is being done to continue to implement Curriculum for
Excellence so that you can be confident that your child is receiving a high quality education.
Wider methods of assessing achievement include foundation apprenticeships, Duke of Edinburgh
Award, and Saltire Award.
At Caldervale High School all S1
pupils follow a common course which
covers the 8 curriculum areas. Aspects
of numeracy, literacy and health and
well-being are the responsibility of all
subject departments.
All S2 pupils participate in IDL (inter
disciplinary learning) by completing 2
blocks of study on Critical Thinking
(literacy across learning), and
Forensics (involving Art and Design,
English, Science and Social Subjects).
In addition to this, S2 pupils have a
chance to study elective courses in
areas of interest.
At present there are opportunities for greater personalisation and choice in S3. Pupils continue their
broad general education through specialising in 9 subjects of their choice (including English and Maths)
from within the 8 curriculum areas. Seven of these subjects (including English and Maths) are
continued into S4 when pupils will be presented for examinations at an appropriate level. There will be
opportunities for pupils to study vocational subjects as part of the senior phase.
All pupils have a Personal
Support session once per week
where staff engage in activities
and discussion aimed at
supporting learning.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS
ENROLMENT AND LEAVING PROCEDURES ENROLMENT Parents/Carers offered or seeking a place in Caldervale High
School for their children are welcome to visit the school. They
should first make an appointment either by letter or by telephone.
Pupils who live outwith the catchment area are required to
complete a placing request form.
There are two school leaving dates each session. Pupils who reach
the age of 16 by 30 September are eligible to leave school from 31
May, following completion of SQA examinations. Pupils who
reach the age of 16 by 28 February are eligible to leave school at
the end of December.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS To enable the school to contact parents/carers quickly in any emergency or difficulty, IT IS
ESSENTIAL THAT ANY CHANGE IN ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER AND
EMERGENCY CONTACT BE INTIMATED AT ONCE to the general office, who will in turn
inform the Pupil Support Staff. The school, moreover, has an obligation under the Data Protection Act
to ensure the accuracy of this information. Parents/carers are asked for their full co-operation.

ATTENDANCE AND REGISTRATION Section 30 of the 1980 Education Act places a duty on every parent/carer of a child of ‘school age’
to ensure that their child attends school regularly. Attendance must be recorded twice a day, morning
and afternoon.
Regulation 7 of The Education (School and Placing Information) (Scotland) Amendment, etc,
Regulations 1993 requires each child’s absence from school to be recorded in the school register as
authorised or unauthorised; as defined by the Scottish Government.
At the start of each school session, parents/carers will be asked to provide contact details including at
least one emergency contact number. Parents/carers are required to inform the school if these contact
details change during the course of the school year.
Parents/carers are asked to inform the school if a pupil is unable to attend from the start of the school
day on the first day of absence. Failure to do so could result in the school accessing all contact numbers
provided for the school. In the interests of child safety the police will be contacted if all attempts to
locate a child have been exhausted.
Parents/carers should inform the school by letter or telephone if their child is likely to be absent for
some time, and to give the child a note on his or her return to school confirming the dates of absence
and the reason for absence.
In line with these policies the school expects regular attendance and good time-keeping. We seek the
co-operation of all parents/carers in trying to attain high levels of attendance throughout the school.
The following should be noted:
Pupils are expected to arrive before 8.55 am, a warning bell is sounded at 8.50 am as a signal that
pupils should make their way to class as Period 1 lessons start at 8.55 am.
Pupils who arrive late are required to report to Reception to collect a late slip and give an
explanation as to why they are late.
If a pupil is absent, a parent or carer should contact the school office or Pupil Support Staff.
Since the school is required to investigate unexplained absences, notifying the school may well
avoid the necessity of sending enquiry letters. On their return to school all absentees are
required to provide a written note of explanation from a parent or carer.
On occasion, pupils entitled to travel by contract hire transport may miss the bus. This is not
sufficient reason for absence and parents/carers are requested to make every effort to ensure that the
pupil reaches school by other means.
Pupils will NOT be permitted to leave the premises during school hours without the permission of
the Head Teacher or Depute Head Teacher. Where pupils have a pre-arranged medical/dental
appointment, they should be collected from reception by their parent/carer.

FAMILY HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
Every effort should be made to avoid family holidays during term time as this both disrupts the child’s
education and reduces learning time. Parents/Carers should inform the school by letter of the dates
before going on holiday.
Absences will be classified as authorised only in exceptional circumstances. Such circumstances may
include a family holiday judged to be important to the well-being and cohesion of the family, following
serious or terminal illness, bereavement or other traumatic events.
A family holiday classified under the ‘authorised absences’ category will not include such reasons as:
The availability of cheap holidays
The availability of desired accommodation
Poor weather experienced during school holidays
Holidays which overlap the beginning or end of term
Parental difficulty obtaining leave (except in cases where evidence is provided by the employer that
it cannot accommodate leave during school holidays without serious consequences)
Family holidays with the above similar characteristics will be classified as unauthorised absence.
Where the Head Teacher’s prior agreement has not been sought the absence will automatically be
classified as unauthorised.
EXTENDED LEAVE WITH PARENTAL CONSENT Where most family holidays will be recorded as unauthorised absence (see above) extended leave with
parental consent will not be considered the same as a family holiday. Leave in such circumstances will
be authorised under circumstances such as:
Extended overseas educational trips not organised by the school
Short-term parental placement abroad
Family returning to its country of origin (eg to care for a relative or for cultural reasons)
Leave in relation to the children of travelling families
EXCEPTIONAL DOMESTIC CIRCUMSTANCES Parents/Carers may request permission for such leave in writing and the school may authorise such
requests under the following circumstances:
The period immediately after an accident or illness
A period of serious or critical illness of a close relative
A domestic crisis which causes serious disruption to the family home causing temporary relocation
Absence rates are calculated as a percentage of the total number of possible attendances for all pupils
of the school in the stage shown, each morning and afternoon of each school day being a separate
possible attendance.
Following investigation of unexplained absence, the Authority has the power to write to, interview or
prosecute parents/carers, or to refer pupils to the Reporter of the Children’s Hearings, if necessary.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES Caldervale High School, in line with North Lanarkshire Council’s policy, actively promotes equal
opportunities. The school is committed to eliminating all forms of discrimination including disability,
gender and religion, and to the promotion of equality of opportunity and good relations.
A member of the Senior leadership Team has responsibility for carrying forward the Authority’s policy
on Equal Opportunities and for monitoring and modifying practices as may be deemed necessary to
eliminate all forms of discrimination and to promote equality of opportunity and good relations.
The school is committed to
ensuring its policies and
practices do not impact
adversely on any particular
group(s) of people and
opportunities to promote
equality are actively
pursued.
The school fully
implements the Education
and Families Equality
Policy.
The curriculum structure
offers equal opportunity of
choice of courses to both
boys and girls.
Disciplinary procedures and sanctions are applied equally to both boys and girls. Regulations regarding
school uniform apply to both sexes.
REPORTING TO PARENTS/CARERS Details of approximate dates of formal reporting and parents’ meetings are listed below.
Reports issued Parents’ Meeting
S1 September, December, May February
S2 October, January, May March
S3 November, January, May March
S4 September, November, February December
S5/S6 September, December, February November
Regular interim reports for all year groups are issued based on behaviour, effort, homework
and progress.
In addition to Parents’ meetings there are also Information Evenings held in school to support
pupils and parents/carers with the personalisation and choice processes in S2, S4 and S5. An
information evening is also held to support parents/carers and pupils with the UCAS process
(university applications).

HOMEWORK
It is school policy that all pupils should be given a reasonable amount of homework relating to
their age, aptitude and ability. Much more will obviously be expected from a senior pupil than from
an S1 pupil.
Homework may consist either of written work to give extra practice in skills taught or the learning of
material to provide a means of ensuring that pupils retain what has been taught.
The school uses ‘Show My Homework’ which allows pupils to record homework issued, staff to
indicate satisfactory completion and parents to monitor their child’s progress with homework.
It is difficult to stipulate the amount of time to be spent on homework on any evening. It may be taken
as a rough guide that SI and S2 should spend up to an hour on average; S3 and S4 up to an hour and a
half; S5 and S6 up to about 2 hours. Times will vary according to the demands of the course followed.
A summary of the school's homework policy is also contained in the student planner.
If pupils do not complete
homework, parents/carers will be
informed via ‘Show My
Homework’. Pupils having
difficulties with homework can
usually get additional support
during Supported Study.
As a parent or carer, if you can,
please provide suitable quiet
conditions for study and
completion of homework without
the distraction of mobile devices,
TVs etc.
SUPPORTED STUDY All departments in the school offer the opportunity to pupils to carry out some of their study within
the school. This gives them access to additional teacher time and also allows them access to school
and departmental resources. Pupils are strongly encouraged to opt into these classes which take place
both at the end of the school day and also at lunchtimes. A timetable of classes is made up and issued to
parents/carers. Many departments also offer drop in sessions on an ad hoc basis to give pupils
assistance with homework or difficulties which they are encountering with the work.

PROMOTING POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR (DISCIPLINE) Over the past few years the school has made significant progress in promoting positive behaviour. The
vast majority of our pupils consistently wear full school uniform – and parents/carers are to be thanked
for their continued support of our uniform policy.
We have implemented a revised merit scheme where staff
can award merits to recognise positive contributions to
learning and to the wider life of the school. At the end of
each term, reward events are held for pupils who have
been awarded more merits that demerits. All pupils are
encouraged to aim to be included in each reward event.
The most valuable form of discipline is self-discipline,
which Caldervale High School aims to encourage in its
pupils as a vital part of their education. Praise and rewards
are used to promote positive behaviour amongst students.
The process of learning and teaching can be carried on
effectively only in conditions of good order, where
disruptive elements are not allowed to disturb the
concentration of others.
For minor offences, the pupil is given a verbal reprimand
by a member of staff. After a suitable warning, if the
misconduct is repeated, an appropriate written task will be
given. This sanction may also be used as a first sanction
for more serious acts of unacceptable behaviour. If necessary, a disruptive pupil is referred to the
Principal Teacher of the subject, who may ask a Depute Head Teacher to deal with the matter after
appropriate departmental sanctions have been applied. At this stage, the pupil may be given a period of
detention, during which time written tasks will be completed under supervision.
Pupils who persistently disrupt the work of a
class may be withdrawn from that group to
allow the other pupils to continue their studies.
In all such cases, the parents/carers will be
contacted about the child’s misconduct. In
practice, we have learned that the greatest
deterrent to misbehaviour is the certain
knowledge that parents/carers will be given
full details. Strong links between the home and
the school are vitally important.
In serious cases a pupil may be excluded by
the Head Teacher. When this step is taken, the
parents/carers will be given the opportunity to
discuss the case with the House Depute.
It is possible to exclude a pupil WITHIN the school. In such cases the pupil in question spends a day or
more in the Pupil Support Base working quietly on prescribed tasks. This method of exclusion will be
used in the first instance and external exclusion will, in most cases, be a last resort.
School regulations are necessary for the safety of the pupils and for the preservation of good order. We
ask for the co-operation of parents/carers in ensuring that these necessary regulations are adhered to.

SCHOOL REGULATIONS SMOKING Pupils are not permitted to smoke in and around the school premises in accordance with legislation
banning smoking in public buildings, nor on their way to and from school.
MONEY/VALUABLES Pupils are actively discouraged from bringing large sums of money or valuables to school. Where this is
unavoidable, children should deposit such valuables with their Pupil Support Staff for safe-keeping.
The school cannot take responsibility for any valuables which go missing. These items are brought to
school at your own risk.
MOBILE TELEPHONES Mobile telephones must be switched off during class and are not permitted in examination rooms under
any circumstances. All parents/carers are issued with a copy of the School Mobile Phone Policy at the
start of term.
SUPERVISION IN NON-CLASS TIMES An adult presence is provided in dining hall and playground at break times in terms of the Schools
(Safety and Supervision of Pupils) (Scotland) Regulations 1990.

ANTI-BULLYING POLICY From time to time, as in every school, instances of bullying occur. Parents/carers are urged to contact
the school immediately if they have any suspicion that their child might be the subject of bullying or
might be involved in bullying. Procedures are in place within the school to deal with this and we have
been encouraged by the support of North Lanarkshire Council in this matter. Although we cannot
promise that bullying will never occur, we do promise that any genuine case of bullying drawn to our
attention will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with to the best of our ability. An atmosphere where
bullying will not flourish is our aim.
It is school policy to correct the ways of the wrongdoer rather than punish him or her. In our
experience, Caldervale parents/carers are concerned about the welfare of the children and willing to co-
operate with staff in seeking the best for them. We shall not hesitate to give early warning to the home
should signs of trouble arise and are confident that parents/carers will, in turn, keep us informed of any
such trends noticed at home.
EXTERNAL PROVIDER STAFF
School disciplinary policy and procedures should be invoked when there is an incident involving any
member of external staff (not employed by NLC) within an NLC establishment.
External staff with allocated classes in schools should be met by a school senior manager before the
first lesson to confirm the policy and procedures on how disruptive behaviour will be managed.
Any misconduct should be reported to a member of the school SLT before the close of the business day.
AWARDS CEREMONY It is the policy of Caldervale High School
to present awards for academic
achievement and endeavour.
At the Awards Ceremony, held at the end
of each session, Certificates of Merit are
presented to those pupils in S1 and S2
who have achieved a high level of
performance over the whole range of
subjects studied and to those in S3 to S6
who have the best performance in
individual subjects. Certificates for
endeavour are awarded to pupils whose
hard work during the year has been of
particular note.
A number of trophies are awarded to pupils who have rendered exceptional service to their House,
School and the Community. Trophies have also been donated for music and sporting achievement.

CLOTHING AND UNIFORM All North Lanarkshire schools must have a dress code which encourages pupils to dress in a way
which is appropriate to attendance at school. This dress code must not lead to direct or indirect
discrimination on the grounds of race, religion, gender or disability. Prior to drawing up the dress
code the parents/carers, pupils and staff were fully consulted. It is the expectation of Education
and Families that parents/carers will be keen to support the dress code and written agreement may
be sought.
Clothing which is unacceptable in school under any circumstances includes items which:
could potentially encourage factions (eg football colours)
could cause offence (eg anti-religious symbolism or political slogans)
could cause health and safety difficulties, such as loose fitting clothing, dangling earrings and
other potentially dangerous jewellery
are of flammable materials which may be a danger in certain classes (eg shell suits)
could cause damage to flooring
carry advertising in particular for alcohol or tobacco, and
could be used to inflict injury to other pupils or could be used by others to do so
Parents/carers in receipt of a clothing grant from the Council will be encouraged to purchase items
which are in accordance with the school dress code. Approval of any requests for such grants in other
circumstances are at the discretion of the Executive Director of Education and Families. Information
and application forms may be obtained from any school or First Stop Shops. Parents/carers are entitled
to receive a clothing grant if they are in receipt of any of the following benefits: Income Support, Job
Seeker's Allowance (income based), Employment and Support Allowance (income related), Universal
Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Rebate.
Whilst in general terms it would not normally be the policy of the Authority to exclude a pupil from
school solely on the basis of his/her dress, persistent refusal to respond to a reasonable dress code may
be deemed to be a serious challenge to the Head Teacher's authority and to be detrimental to the
wellbeing of the whole school community. In such circumstances a Head Teacher may justify the use of
the school discipline procedure.
The Council wishes to minimise claims arising from the loss of pupils’ clothing and/or personal
belongings. Parents/Carers are asked to assist in this area by ensuring that valuable items and
unnecessarily expensive items of clothing, jewellery etc, are not brought to school. Parents/carers
should note that any claims submitted to cover the loss of such things are likely to be met only where
the Authority can be shown to have been negligent.
At Caldervale we expect very high standards in terms of uniform throughout each session. In the past
this has been fully supported by the Parent Council and endorsed by pupil and parental surveys.
Boys’ uniform consists of: Black blazer with school badge, long black school trousers
(jeans are not permitted), plain black v-neck jumper (hooded
tops are not permitted), school tie and white shirt.
Girls’ uniform consists of: Black blazer with school badge, black skirt/long black trousers
(shorts and jeans are not permitted), plain black v-neck jumper
(hooded tops are not permitted), school tie and white blouse.

It is obvious that for certain activities special kit is required (eg PE kit is necessary in Physical
Education). Outdoor shoes may not be worn in the gymnasium. In these areas, pupils may participate in
the class work ONLY when they are wearing appropriate dress.
To further enhance a sense of belonging to Caldervale High School and to encourage House identity,
there is a standard uniform for Physical Education. Pupils should wear House t-shirts for PE as follows:
Erskine House - White
Morton House - Blue
Scobbie House - Red
These will be worn for all PE lessons and also used when representing the appropriate House in Inter-
House competitions and the school at external sporting events.
PE KIT FOR BOYS AND GIRLS T-shirt (relevant House colour), training shoes, shorts or track bottoms.
SCHOOL MEALS The School is committed to ensuring that good, clean facilities are available to all. All school catering
facilities are now on a cafeteria basis. Payment for food is made electronically using a Young Scot
card/PIN.
Diets required as a result of a medical condition (a medically prescribed diet eg coeliac disease,
diabetes, food allergy or intolerance) can be provided in school. A medically prescribed diet form must
be completed by the child’s Registered Dietician or General Practitioner. Procedures and forms can be
accessed from the child’s school or dietician, or from North Lanarkshire’s catering service.
Occasionally, parents/carers may be asked to supply prescription foods or attend a meeting to discuss
the child’s dietary requirements. Some children with additional support needs may require food to be
adapted to an appropriate texture and consistency. In this instance the child’s Registered Dietician or
Speech and Language Therapist will liaise with the Head Teacher and school catering service to ensure
appropriate food provision. Special diets required for ethical, religious or cultural reasons should be
requested in writing to the head teacher, who will liaise with the school catering service. Facilities are
available in the cafeteria for pupils who bring a packed lunch.
Children of parents/carers receiving Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance (income based),
Employment and Support Allowance (income related), Universal Credit are entitled to a meal without
charge. Students aged between 16 and 18 and who are in receipt of any qualifying benefits can apply for
free school meals in their own right.
Information and application forms for free school meals may be obtained from schools, First Stop shops
and Municipal Buildings, Kildonan Street, Coatbridge.
Parents/carers are entitled to receive a clothing grant if they are in receipt of any of the following
benefits: Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (income based), Employment and Support Allowance
(income related), Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax rebate.
Free milk is not provided for secondary pupils. Milk may, however, be available for purchase in the
school during the lunch period.
Pupils who opt to bring packed lunch are welcome in the dining hall.

PLACING REQUESTS You have the right to make a placing request for your child to be educated in a school other than the
local school. In December each year, the Authority will advertise its arrangements for placing requests.
There are sound educational reasons for trying to ensure that the transfer or admission of children to a
school takes place at the start of a school session. Other than those who are moving home to a new area,
parents/carers are advised to time any placing requests so that they take effect from the beginning of the
new school session. Every effort will be made to try to meet the parental wishes, but you should note
that it is not always possible to grant every placing request to a particular school.
Once a pupil has reached the school leaving age the pupil, not the pupil’s parents/carers may choose
which school to go to.
Placing requests to Primary School does not necessarily ensure that your child will have a direct
entry to the associated Secondary. Advice on this must be sought from the Primary School Head
Teacher. Further information on placing requests and procedures is available from the school or
the Council's website.
Parents/Carers and young people have
a right under the Additional Support for
Learning Act 2009 to make a placing
request for their child or young person
to attend a nursery (including partnership
nursery), special school or special class
managed by the home Authority. In the
event of a successful placing request the
Authority are not required to provide
transport. The Act also enables
parents/carers and young people to
make a placing request to attend a
school/establishment belonging to
another Authority.

37
TRANSPORT The Council has a policy of providing free transport to secondary pupils who live more than two miles
from their local school by the shortest suitable walking route. This policy is more generous than the law
requires. This provision may be reviewed at any time. Parents/carers who consider they are eligible
should obtain an application form from the school or from Education and Families. These forms should
be completed and returned before the end of February for those pupils beginning the school in August
to enable the appropriate arrangements to be made.
Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year but may be subject to delay whilst
arrangements are made.
There is discretion in certain circumstances to grant privilege transport for pupils to travel in transport
provided by the Authority, where spare places are available and no additional costs are incurred.
PICK-UP POINTS Where free transport is provided it may be necessary for pupils to walk a certain distance to the

HEALTH AND MEDICAL CARE In Caldervale High School, all cases of accident or illness occurring
within the school are dealt with by staff who are trained in first aid
and are nominated by the Head Teacher to deal with such cases. If
necessary, parents/carers are contacted and consulted, otherwise
appropriate action is taken. Pupils must not leave school without
permission.
Parents/Carers should note that ailments or injuries known to them
before the child leaves home for school should be handled through
normal medical channels.
We do not provide a medical service in the school.
Certain cases may have to be passed on for attention in a hospital when every effort will be made to
inform the parent/carer or emergency contact listed in the pupil’s record.
Parents/carers are particularly requested to inform the school of any acute or chronic medical conditions
which could affect the safety or happiness of the child in school.
These matters are treated confidentially and sympathetically.
Pupils on medication should leave their medication in the general office, where this may be taken
under supervision.
Pupils who have appointments with their own doctors, dentists, opticians or at a hospital during school
hours MUST bring an appointment card or letter of explanation from parents/carers to the General
Office. Their appointments will be recorded and they will be marked present.
If a young person is unable to attend school due to long term illness North Lanarkshire Council must
make arrangements for the pupil to receive education elsewhere.
INFORMATION IN EMERGENCIES We make every effort to maintain a full educational service, but on some occasions circumstances arise
which lead to disruption. For example, schools may be affected by severe weather, temporary
interruption of transport, power failures or difficulties of fuel supply. In such cases we shall do all we
can to let you know about the details of closure or re-opening. We shall keep you informed by using
letters, notices in local shops and community centres, announcements in local churches and
announcements in the press, on local radio, on the NLC website and on Twitter.

SPIRITUAL, SOCIAL, MORAL AND CULTURAL VALUES The school’s policy on Religious Education
and Observance, as outlined below, is in
accordance with the Council’s policies on
religious education and religious observance.
Caldervale High School chaplains visit the
school regularly and are available at times for
private consultation by pupils and staff.
For S1-S4 classes, our specialist teachers of
Religious and Moral Education provide a
programme of Religious, Moral and
Philosophical Education. Pupils who choose to
study National 3/4/5 and Higher Grade in the
area of Religious Studies are also taught by
these specialists.
From time to time, special assemblies are held to mark appropriate religious festivals and significant
events in our school’s life eg Easter, Christmas, Remembrance. These assemblies are conducted by
chaplains, and the participation of pupils is also strongly encouraged.
It is recognised that the Education Act allows parents/carers to withdraw their children from any
instruction in religious subjects and from any religious observance and any such pupil will not be
placed at any disadvantage with respect to secular instruction. The school will agree to any such request
being made in writing by a parent or carer.
Parents/Carers from ethnic minority religious communities may request that their children be permitted
to be absent from school in order to celebrate recognised religious events. Only written requests will be
considered. Appropriate requests will be granted on not more than three occasions in any one school
session and the pupil noted as an authorised absentee in the register.

EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE Students who have reached the statutory school leaving age of 16 may be eligible for an Education
Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to allow them to remain at school.
In session 2019/2020 students who are born before 1 March 2004 will be eligible to apply for an EMA.
The EMA guidelines explain the criteria which must be met in order to be eligible for an EMA and the
rules which must be adhered to for the EMA to be paid throughout the year.
ELIGIBILITY
All applications are individually assessed. Students must attend a school within North
Lanarkshire Council, regardless of where he or she is resident.
The income used as the basis of the assessment is the gross household income for the preceding
financial year.
The income thresholds used in assessing applications in session 2018-2019 are as shown below.
These levels may be subject to change in session 2019-2020.
o For applicants in single student households - £30 per week is paid where the income is
up to £24,421; where the income is above that level no award will be made.
o For applicants in multiple student households - £30 per week is paid where the income
is up to £26,884; where the income is above that level no award will be made.
ATTENDANCE Students in receipt of an EMA must attain 100% attendance in any week to receive payment for that
week. Where the student is absent through illness a medical certificate must be submitted. In addition,
self-certification forms are accepted for a maximum of 5 days sickness absence in the academic session.
Any illness which would take the pupil over the 5 days self-certification would continue to require
submission of a medical certificate.
APPLICATION FORMS A letter will be sent to the parent or carer of all students who are in the eligible age-band to apply for an
EMA in May each year, providing details of the main eligibility criteria.
Application forms and guidance documents are sent to all secondary schools and special schools in
North Lanarkshire in June each year. The school is also given a number of posters publicising the
scheme and advertising the availability of forms. Students who may be eligible should obtain an
application form and guidance document from the school. Application forms and guidance notes are
available from schools, Council Offices Kildonan Street and First Stop Shops or they may be
downloaded from the North Lanarkshire Council website.
Students who are eligible for an EMA for the full academic session should apply as early as possible.
Students who are eligible for an EMA from January to June, should apply from November.
Any student who is unsure whether they meet the EMA criteria should contact the EMA Section
for advice.

PRIVACY STATEMENT FOR ENROLMENT OF PUPILS IN A NORTH LANARKSHIRE SCHOOL WHAT IS THIS STATEMENT? This statement explains when and why we collect personal information about you, your child or young
person and how this information is used, the conditions under which it may be disclosed to others and
how it is kept secure.
WHO ARE WE? North Lanarkshire Council is a Local Authority established under the Local Government etc. (Scotland)

your family circumstances.
We require this information to

WHO DO WE SHARE INFORMATION WITH? To support your child or young person’s access to appropriate education and meet our legal obligation,
personal information may be shared internally between services of the Council. From time to time,
education staff may also need to share information about you, your child or young person with another
person from another agency or service, e.g. Health.
We also share information with Scottish Government and bodies such as Education Scotland, Scottish
Qualifications Authority, Skills Development Scotland and other organisations that support children
and young people’s learning.
When a child or young person moves or transfers to another school the Council has an obligation to
pass on information with regards to pupil records to the new school.
Only identified staff and those who require to have the information to enable them to carry out their
job, will have access to you, your child or young person’s information. We care about the information
we hold in respect to the education of children and young people. We will keep this information safe
and secure.
HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION FOR? We only keep personal information for the minimum period of time necessary. Sometimes this is set out
in law, but in most cases it is based on what we need to fulfil our function. We maintain a ‘records
retention and disposal schedule’ which sets out how long we hold different types of information for.
You can view this on our website at http://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=15003

TRANSFERRING EDUCATIONAL DATA ABOUT PUPILS Education Authorities and the Scottish Government Education Portfolio (SGEP) exchange data about
pupils either on paper or electronically through the ScotXed programme.
The data collected and transferred covers areas such as date of birth, postcode, registration for free
school meals, whether a pupil is looked after by his/her Local Authority, additional support needs
including disability, attendance, absence and exclusions from school. Pupil names and addresses are
collected by the school and the council but they are not passed to SGEP. The postcode is the only part
of the address that is transferred. Data is held securely and no information on individual pupils can be
published by SGEP.
Providing national identity and ethnic background data is entirely voluntary. You can choose the
‘not disclosed’ option if you do not want to provide this data. However, we hope that the explanations
contained in this message and on our website will help you understand the importance of providing
the data.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR DATA? In order to make the best decisions about how to improve our education service, SGEP and education
authorities need accurate, up-to-date data about our pupils. We are keen to help all our pupils do well in
all aspects of school life and achieve better educational outcomes. Accurate and up-to-date data allows
SGEP, education authorities and schools to:
plan and deliver better policies for the benefit of all pupils
plan and deliver better policies for the benefit of specific groups of pupils
better understand some of the factors that influence pupil attainment and achievement
target resources better.

use data. Fuller details of the uses of pupil data can be found on the ScotXed website (www.scotxed.net).
SGEP works with a range of partners including Education Scotland and the Scottish Qualifications
Authority. On occasion, we will make individual data available to partners and also academic
institutions to carry out research and statistical analysis. In addition, we will provide our partners with
information they need in order to fulfil their official responsibilities. Any sharing of data will be done
under the strict control and prior agreement of the Data Access Panel in SGEP, which will ensure that
no subject specific data will be made public as a result of the data sharing and that such data will not be

HOME AND SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP LINKS Caldervale High School places great importance on regular consultation between staff and
parents/carers.
There are Parents’ Meetings for each stage of school to discuss individual progress.
Members of the Senior leadership Team and Pupil Support Staff are available during school hours to
meet with parents/carers, who are asked to make appointments in advance by telephone or letter. It will
be appreciated that such staff have a teaching commitment and must restrict meetings to their non-
teaching time. (See summary of times for contact with parents/carers).
The school will contact parents/carers whenever necessary, but especially in cases where early warning
of unsatisfactory progress has to be given. In return, we welcome calls from parents/carers who are in
any way concerned. Do not hesitate to contact the school.
The school benefits from a Home/School Partnership Officer which increases the contact available
between the school and home.
SUMMARY OF TIMES FOR CONTACT WITH PARENTS/CARERS Notice of meetings between staff and parents/carers (Parents’ Meetings) is given through a letter from
the Head Teacher.
Meetings for all parents/carers of children taking part in educational visits abroad will be held as
required before the trip.
