Course Description: Continued development of the properties and applications of integration. Topics include

infinite sequences and series, introduction to differential equations, calculus of polar coordinates and parametric

equations. Applications include - but are not limited to - science, engineering, economics, and ecology.

Course objectives:

1. Use antiderivatives to evaluate definite integrals and formulate the fundamental theorems of calculus.

2. Evaluate integrals using antiderivatives, substitution, integrations by parts, partial fraction

decompositions, trigonometric substitutions, and tables.

3. Define and evaluate improper integrals and describe convergence behavior.

4. Apply calculus to investigate curves defined by parametric equations and polar coordinates.

5. Examine convergence of infinite numeric series using standard tests.

6. Examine convergence of power series.

7. Approximate functions using Taylor polynomials and estimate errors.

8. Represent functions by power series.

9. Identify and apply basic solution techniques for elementary differential equations.

Assignments (assigned weekly on D2L and on MyMathLab website), Expectations and Grading:

A. You are expected to be motivated, independent and active learners to spend at least 15 hours weekly on

course work. Read the text and study the examples. Study/review the posted lecture notes, videos and

examples (All posted materials in the D2L content area are required for you to study or review). Do

Student Code of Conduct and Expectations:

1. Students are expected to abide Normandale Community College student code of conduct. Please read

Academic dishonesty is not accepted.

2. Students are expected to be motivated, independent and active learners. This online calculus course is a 5-

credit course. Students are expected to spend at least 15 hours weekly studying/reviewing, completing and

submitting weekly assignments before due dates to maintain an average grade.

Policies on Make-up Exams, Incomplete Grades, Late Homework, Attendance and Student Grievance:

1. No make-up exam is allowed other than the gateway exam. If you miss an exam, the score for the missed

exam will be zero. Incomplete grades cannot be offered in this course.

2. Late homework will not be accepted. Internet slow or server down is not an acceptable reason for any

missed deadlines. No extra work for more points.

3. Students are expected to attend all scheduled class meetings on time. Students are responsible for all

lecture notes, assignments, tests and announcements given in class or posted on D2L web site.

Communication and Instructor Response Expectations:

1. I will check the discussion forums and my college email account for student questions weekdays. I will

reply to the questions to explain or give hints for questions unanswered or answered by students but still

not clear enough or unsolved. You can expect I will post my responses within 48 hours. Weekly online

homework will be graded with scores recorded immediately. Written homework sets and exams will be

graded and the scores will be recorded within a week.

Feedback Expectations:

1. Your submitted written homework through D2L dropboxes will be graded and returned to your dropboxes

within a week. We will use D2L gradebook; and you can check your grades from the gradebook. The

online homework scores will be posted in the D2L gradebook at the end of the semester.

2. Your tests will be graded and scores recorded within a week.

Discussion Board Posting Expectations and Netiquette:

1. Please post a brief introduction of yourself in the D2L course → Communications → Discussions →

Introduction forum to introduce yourself to the class (See my post for directions and my example).

2. You can earn up to two points weekly by posting at least two posts in the weekly discussion forum on

course content, online homework, written homework, tests, sharing resources and ideas, solutions

to the listed suggested homework problems in the syllabus, or giving hints to questions from

classmates. You can earn up to 20 points in the semester. The earlier forums will be closed without

notice. Your posts should be specific with as much detail as possible when asking questions or giving

explanations or hints to other’s questions. Posts like “Please help me with problem 1”, “I agree with…”,

“I don’t think so”, and the like will not count for participation points. Communications should always be

professional, detailed and respectful. Be polite and courteous, no slangs.

Technology Needed for This Course:

1. You need to have a daily access to a high-speed internet connection.

2. You may need to download plug-ins for http://pearsonmylabandmastering.com/.

3. For written homework, you can use Word 2007 or Word 2010 which has a built-in equation editor. If you

use Word 2003, you may need to download MathType free to typeset your solutions. If you do not

purchase MathType within 30 days, it will become MathType Lite which is a free Equation Editor.

4. For the weekly posted study materials on the D2L course website, you may need to download free

QuickTime, free Flash Player, free Acrobat Reader, and free Opera browser (for Mac computers).

5. Calculator is not needed and is not allowed during tests/exams in this course. But we will use free

web program http://www.wolframalpha.com/ for computation and graphing for homework and practice.

6. You need to have a back-up plan in case you cannot access internet through your main computer.

The Gateway Exam and Online Homework:

1. The Gateway Exam is a departmental exam testing students’ skills on integration. The Gateway Exam is

part of the midterm (actual time is 2 hours). If a student fails the Gateway Exam (gets 5/8 or fewer

questions correct) in the midterm, the student can retake the Gateway Exam two times. But the midterm

grades will not be changed.

2. Students can do the weekly online homework (due midnight Mondays, 20-25 questions for each online

homework set) multiple times before the due date. When working on the homework, you are encouraged

to use the learning aids (“Help Me Solve This”, “View an Example”, “Video”, “Textbook”, “Print” or

“Similar Exercise”) on the homework webpage at http://pearsonmylabandmastering.com/.

How to meet the learning objectives:

1. Read the weekly assigned sections from the text (or from the E-book of the text on MyMathLab website).

Study/review the weekly posted video lectures, lecture notes and examples.

2. The weekly online homework assignments (with unlimited tries allowed) are due Mondays, and align

with the course objectives and the weekly module level objectives. Earning 85% mark or higher in the

weekly online homework meets the weekly learning objectives adequately.

3. There are six written homework sets. Earning 80% mark or higher in the written homework meets the

learning objectives adequately. The grading of the written homework is based on completeness,

correctness and overall quality of the homework.

1. My name is Xiaosheng Li. I am a mathematics instructor at Normandale Community College. I live in

Apple Valley, Minnesota. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Master

degree and a PhD degree, both in mathematics. I am in the seventh year here. Before coming to

Normandale, I taught five and half years at the University of Illinois as a TA and five years at the

University of Minnesota Morris as an assistant professor. I love teaching and would like to share my

mathematics knowledge with my students. My brief teaching philosophy is that the instructor and the

students are a teaching/learning team in that the instructor is the team leader who will guide/help the

students to achieve the learning goals for the course by completing various learning tasks/activities over

the whole semester. I have been teaching various online math courses for over 6 years. I check my current

Proctored Midterm and Proctored Final Exam:

If you live more than 75 miles away from Nomrandale Community College, you can take proctored exams in a

testing center of a local university or college of your residency. You need to find a proctor in the testing center

and send me the information about the proctor, including proctor’s full name, job title, office address, phone

number and school email address at least a week before the exam. The proctor should not be a relative of yours.

Let me know the specific location where you are planning to take the proctored exam.

Some Important Tips:

1. You are expected to be motivated, independent and active learners to spend at least 15 hours weekly on

course work. Read the text and work the examples first. Study/review the D2L posted lecture notes,

videos and examples (All posted materials in the D2L content area are required for you to study or

review). Rework all examples from the text and the D2L posted materials. Then work the online

homework (take notes in a notebook) early in the week, and then do the written homework, finally finish

and submit the assignments before they are due. Ask whatever questions you may have in the discussions

board to get help from the class and earn weekly participation points. Never postpone the homework

to the last minutes. Do not expect last minute assistance or extensions.

2. For written homework, you can use MS Word (click “Insert” button, and then click “Equation”

button) to type your detailed solutions with questions as traditional mathematics equations and

notations in ONE Single Word File; or use a thick pen to copy questions and write your detailed

solutions in paper and then scan your finished homework and put scanned files into ONE Single File in

Word or PDF format with a small size, legible and neat. Submit the produced file through the D2L

dropbox for that week. The grading of the written homework is based on completeness, correctness and

overall quality of the homework.

3. Written homework 3 is a midterm sample with answer keys and written homework 6 is a final exam

sample with answer keys. You need to print out the midterm sample and the final exam sample when

they are available in the D2L content area, manually write your solutions in spaces between questions,

scan all pages into one single file in Word or pdf format, and then submit the scanned file. The submitted

midterm sample and the final exam sample will not be returned.

4. Exams contain free response questions and multiple choice questions. The grading of the free

response questions is based on details allowing partial credits, and the grading of the multiple choice

questions is based on choices only without allowing partial credits.

Instructional Materials, Specific Criteria for Students’ Work and Participation:

1. There are two parts of the instructional materials for this course: Pearson MyMathLab content (E-book,

video lectures, media and online homework) and instructor produced content (lecture notes, videos, study

guide and examples, discussion forums and written homework) posted on the D2L course website.

2. From the MyMathLab website, you need to study chapter content/media and do weekly online homework

(with unlimited tries allowed). It is a good idea to use the learning aids on the right side of the homework

screen. Most online homework problems are easy. The weekly practice will improve your understanding

of the course content and improve your problem-solving skills. Your goal is to finish the homework close

to 100% correct, but no less than 85%. Maintain a notebook to take notes when doing the homework. The

online homework problems are multiple-choice questions and are graded immediately.

3. From the D2L content area: you need to study/review the weekly posted lecture notes, examples, videos

to reinforce your understanding of the course content and also to help you finish online and written

homework assignments. You will submit the finished written homework via D2L dropboxes. The written

homework problems are generally more challenging than the online homework problems. Students must

write complete solutions for their written homework. I will grade your written homework with detail. The

grading of the written homework is based completeness, correctness and overall quality of the solutions.

4. Weekly participation points: you are required to participate. You will earn weekly participation points by

posting your specific questions (or replying to questions from classmates with hints) on the weekly

course content, online and written homework, solutions to the listed suggested homework problems in

the syllabus, or sharing helpful Internet resources and tips on learning calculus. You get help or help

your classmates, and also earn weekly participation points. Every week you can earn up to 2 points by

making at least two posts in the current forum in the D2L discussion area. You can earn up to 20 points

for the whole semester. The participation points are critical for your course grades at the end of the

semester. I will be an active member in the discussion forums to help students when I see questions.

WolframAlpha ( http://www.wolframalpha.com/) is a free, helpful web-based tool. We can use this

software to do computation, graphing, solve equations, check answers. But we should focus on

5. Online learning needs a lot more time and effort, and is demanding for both students and the instructor. It

is very important to do practice often beyond the weekly homework assignments: (after understanding the

course materials) reworking the examples in the text, reworking the examples from the D2L posted

lecture notes and practice exercises. There are many ways you can get help. Post (like your classmates)

your specific questions in the D2L discussion forums to get help from me and classmates and also earn

participation credits. You could use internet resources such as YouTube or WolframAlpha to get help.

You could also print out the sample exams and then come see me or go to the Normandale tutoring center

to get help when on campus. But all in all, we need start early and spend a lot of time doing online

learning. The trick is practice, practice and more practice. Use the discussion forums daily to posted

specific questions or to give hints to questions posted by classmates. I will help you and your classmates

will also help you. The class is a learning community where students will be active contributors to help

each other and I will also be an active contributor to the discussion forums.
