The ECse value is only an estimated value as the true determination is a complicated and costly laboratory procedure:How to use the table over the page:1. Measure the electrical conductivity of a 1:5 soil water extract
(EC1:5) - locate this value in the yellow shaded section.2. Determine the soil texture of your soil or find out the clay content.3. Multiply the EC1:5 value by the multiplication factor (green shaded
area) which corresponds to your texture or clay content to determine the saturated extract electrical conductivity (ECse) which is shown in the first column of figures.
4. Compare this value with the soil salinity rating and whether it is limiting to crops or pastures. For example: If your EC1:5 = 0.27 and the soil texture is a clay loam (35-40% clay) the
5. ECse = 0.27 x 8.6 = 2.32 dS/m - medium soil salinity rating / moderately tolerant crops can be grown.
