Measure the electrical conductivity of a 1:5 soil water extract (EC 1:5 ) - locate this value in the yellow shaded section. 2. Determine the soil texture of your soil or find out the clay content. 3. Multiply the EC 1:5 value by the multiplication factor (green shaded area) which corresponds to your texture or clay content to determine the saturated extract electrical conductivity (EC se ) which is shown in the first column of figures. 4. Compare this value with the soil salinity rating and whether it is limiting to crops or pastures. For example: If your EC 1:5 = 0.27 and the soil texture is a clay loam (35-40% clay) the 5. EC se = 0.27 x 8.6 = 2.32 dS/m - medium soil salinity rating / moderately tolerant crops can be grown.
