THE HISTORY OF JAZZJazz is the birthplace of the musical style that gave American music its mythical and real past. A migratory culture made up of different regional styles and dialects, it has revived itself throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Apart from its seminal influence in the history of rock music and contemporary styles, jazz is one of the most durable traditions in music history. Lectures will focus on significant trends in its development utilizing listening examples; and on the repertoire, composers, artists and performers who have made jazz the quintessential American art form. GIANTS OF JAZZ: I’VE GOT THOSE “JUST GOTTA SEE IT, BUT IT AIN’T ON YOUTUBE” BLUESThis evening we explore the amazing world of American popular music and jazz through a series of film clips that illustrate the power and excitement of this music. Film archivist and musicologist Mark Cantor guides us through a series of performance clips that, for the most part, cannot be viewed on YouTube. Together we will sample music from New Orleans – jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet grace the screen – then travel almost 5,000 miles to hear Belgian gypsy guitar great Django Reinhart. The music of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and other masters of the “Great American Songbook,” will be interpreted by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme and Billie Holiday. From the 1930s, the era of swinging big bands, we will see and hear Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. Small combos will be represented by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson and John Coltrane. Other treats might include such personalities as Ina Ray Hutton, Merle Travis or B.B. King. We won’t forget a healthy dose of jazz dance, both Lindy Hop and tap.

LA TIMES TOURThe historic Los Angeles Times Building, located at 1st and Spring Street in Downtown Los Angeles, opened in 1935 and at the time was the largest building in the western U.S. designed and occupied entirely as a daily newspaper publishing operation. Gordon B. Kaufmann designed the Times Building and won a gold medal at the 1937 Paris Exposition for its Moderne architectural style. The Globe Lobby is one of the aesthetic highlights of the Times Building. Its 10-foot-high murals were painted in 1934 by Hugo Ballin, who also painted the Griffith Observatory rotunda, and represent some of the finest murals produced in Los Angeles during the 1930s. The lobby also includes a historical exhibit showcasing the first 100 years of The Times. First we will take a guided tour of the editorial newsroom to see the writing, editing, page design and photography departments and the Test Kitchen. Enjoy lunch on your own tab at the Times cafeteria, the downstairs lunch room that once held the large printing presses for the paper. Then we will bus to the Times printing plant, a $230 million state-of-the-art plant to see the presses, robotics, packaging, delivery departments and massive paper warehouse, twice the length of a football field and 3 stories high.

RUBEL CASTLE, A RECYCLED DREAM & ROUTE 66When he was 18, Michael Rubel bought 2.5 acres of a citrus orchard in Glendora, California. Therein he began fulfilling his childhood dream of owning and living in a real castle. Over the next 26 years, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, Rubel Castle was completed. Though built largely of concrete and stone, any discards Michael found interesting were recycled and used in his project. A courtyard, drawbridge, clock tower, faux graveyard, dungeons, and other oddities fill the property. Shortly before his death in 2007, Rubel gifted the Castle to the Glendora Historical Society to assure this quirky treasure’s perpetuity. In 2013, Rubel Castle was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. NOTE: The Castle has uneven walking surfaces and is not recommended for those with conditions that physical exertion may exacerbate. Walking shoes are essential. We will enjoy lunch at Legend’s Classic, a charming 50’s diner, on your own tab. For an added treat we will stop at The Donut Man, now featuring their heavenly, renowned fresh strawberry donuts.
