Message from the President I hope your summer is proving to be everything you wanted. Myself, I wouldn’t mind a little more sun out my way to take my new electric tricycle out riding on the Olympic Discovery Trail with my grandson. The installation dinner was inspirational. The Installation Committee worked so hard to create a lovely atmosphere, great energy, tasty chocolate treats and brought wisdom and grace to the installation ceremony. Our resident comedian, Elaine Churchill, really made us laugh; Gena Royal, Deb Carlson and our award winners, Jeani Penn and Elaine Churchill inspired us; Kathy Purcell’s year in review touched every emotion from laughter to tears. Again, I’d like to thank Susan Mesches for delivering my speech (I couldn’t have done it better myself, really). My personal favorite was the “Happy” dancers. They were so cute, full of joy and their willingness to do this really did make me happy. I’d like to remind those of you who missed the last few meetings to sign-up for at least one committee. *Evening Meeting

Letter from the Editor Dear Friends, What is inspiration and from where does it come? The Oxford dictionary

shows this definition: “The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.” How is it that something that has no impact on us one day, inspires us the next? One morning this past week I was riding on Hwy 101 heading into town, wondering what I would write about for this edition of the newsletter. Thoughts of President Elaine’s theme—We Rise By Lifting Others—and her hot air balloon logo came into my mind’s eye. Was this to tie into my article? I drove past Whitefeather Way looking up at the beautiful clear blue sky—the same sky I see every day going to work. Suddenly I couldn’t believe my eyes! In the distance I saw a hot air balloon—just above the trees. Was this a sign? As I continued driving, the balloon seemed to be moving closer to the ground, almost below the trees. Passing Simdars Road, for a short time all I could see was the very top of the balloon. I wondered where it would land. Continuing west I got another surprise! The balloon was moving east on the north side of the highway—heading in my direction. It wasn’t landing, but was considerably low to the ground—almost as if it had a fly-by mission. This prompted me to want to learn more about hot air balloons. I went to the internet to do a bit of investigation. It is interesting how often I find myself doing research on something for my articles. I assume the role of student each time. While I knew a hot air balloon is a lighter-than-air aircraft, I didn’t know the top part that contains the heated air is called an envelope. It is generally made from nylon fabric, and the area closest to the burner flame is made from a fire resistant material. Suspended beneath it is a basket, usually made of wicker, which carries passengers and a source of heat—most often liquid propane. The heated air inside the envelope creates a lift force since it has a lower density than the colder air outside the envelope. The balloon rises. I was thinking how in some ways our club is like a hot air balloon ride. The heated air in the balloon represents the intensity of our enthusiasm. It is the heat of our passion that moves us forward and upward. What is within is what is important. The wicker basket cannot go anywhere without the envelope tied to it. And the envelope cannot go anywhere without the liquid propane. And the liquid propane cannot ignite itself. It takes all the components, all working in tandem, to have a hot air balloon take flight. It takes all of us working in unison for our club to soar. Let’s keep looking up! We never know when we will receive an inspiration. Wishing you all an inspired summer! Light and Love, Kathy Purcell, Editor

In Kathleen DeJong’s own words: I and my partner won at Sunland; it was a two-day Member/Member tournament. My partner,

85 year old Nonie Dunphy, and I won all around low net for the women. We were an unlikely pair to win this tournament but Nonie has a good short game and I have a decent fairway game. Nonie has played in this tournament since the 80’s and never won. She was over the moon to finally win. It makes me smile every time I think about it.

WHAT’S THE WORD? What is in a “word?” One of Webster’s definitions is “a written or printed character or combination of characters representing a spoken word .” I find the foregoing definition can apply when we say Soroptimist. Just recently, I said, “our Soroptimist organization” and I saw the squint in the eye, the puzzled look in the face, which was followed by the remark “What is Soroptimist?” I said, “What is Soroptimist?” “Do you have a few minutes because I would like to tell you what Soroptimist is?” Five minutes later came the comment, “I had no idea and I think that is wonderful.” There are many in the community who have no idea about our organization. I hope that as a member of Soroptimist International of Sequim when you have the opportunity, you share about the organization. Share what we have been providing for the community for over 71 years. Share what we do for women and girls. Share about our Medical Loan closet, the garden show and gift show. Share about Tea with SHE! Most of all, share that our dollars go back into the community to build on making a better community. Be a part of the public awareness team by sharing the good works of our organization. ~Linda Klinefelter, Public Awareness Co-chair

MLC YEAR IN REVIEW The 2017-18 year has been a very busy one! During the year our volunteers handled over 2,000 pieces of equipment. These included loans, returns, and donated items as well as giving information to those we were not able to help. Our busiest month was last November. It seemed to have been brought on by the freezing temperatures and the slippery conditions that came with it! By January and February we were slammed with returns, so apparently everyone recovered and many thank you messages came our way. Our committee members this past year included: Becky Archer, Marti Campbell, Kate Creasey, Kathleen DeJong, Sharron Empens, Judy Field, Gloria Fitzgerald, Su Howat, Amala Kuster, Jeani Penn, Janet Real, Gena Royal, Jolene Sanborn, Chris Snow, Connie VanRoosendaal, and Dorothy Ward. What a great crew! Thank you all! If there are any club members who are no longer on the MLC committee who have keys to the unit, please contact Gena to turn them in so that we don't have to purchase new keys for incoming committee members. ~Gena Royal, MLC Co-Chair

Harley Davidson was one of our Live Your Dream Award recipients last year. Harley has accomplished much already in her life. Recently she was one of four winners at Peninsula College, receiving a $200 check! More valuable than the money were the comments made by the professor which included: “Wow. GALA GARDEN SHOW NEWS

July is exciting because it is the month we select the featured artwork for the upcoming Gala Garden Show!

Melody Albertson and Sharron Empens have been busy collecting the entries and preparing a display for the committee to review. Submissions must be postmarked by July 15. The Core Committee meets Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. in the First Security Bank’s community room. We will be viewing and voting on the artwork. Soon after, notifications will go out to all those who participated in the contest. Those who weren’t selected will be encouraged to participate next year. We should be seeing the featured artwork on the Gala Garden Show website in August.

Jan Chapman and Su Howat have been busy securing our keynote speaker. We are

happy to announce the keynote speaker for the 2019 show will be Jessi Bloom. Jessi is a best-selling author, award-winning ecological landscape designer, and speaker. She owns N.W. Bloom EcoLogical Landscapes, based near Seattle, which is known as an innovator and leader in the field of permaculture, sustainable landscape design, construction and land management. Her work has been recognized by government agencies and industry organizations, and makes headlines in national media. She lives near Seattle with her two sons on their permaculture homestead, which is full of functional gardens and rescue animals. Stay tuned. More things are ready to bloom!

~Su Howat & Kathy Purcell, Gala Garden Show Co-Chairs

NOTES FROM THE GALA GIFT SHOW COMMITEE

Sponsors: We discussed sending a sponsor letter to all the women entrepreneurs in Sequim. Dollar amounts will be levels from 25-99, 100-149, 150+ Thank you banner for those who sponsor as well as other acknowledgement. (What else will they get for their sponsorship?) We will want to have them onboard by September.

Marketing: The committee decided to continue advertising through Facebook, our Gala Gift Show website, and the holiday events tabloids.

Bake Sale: Pat would like to have a co-chair.

Vendors: Vendor letters went out to previous vendors and new vendors are being sought. Previous vendors asked that there be some sort of music (caroling) or entertainment around 2 – closing to keep the customers coming in.

Sees: We decided See’s will be in the same room with the raffle and the bake sale.

Café: Elaine Churchill and Becky Archer, team extraordinaire, were given the past history of the

success of the café. They will plan their menu and update us at our next meeting. (Paulette and Rick Hill will provide two soups for our café.)

We still need some volunteers to work the show. Specifically, we need someone to coordinate the volunteers. If you talk to others during the summer, suggest that they might want to step up to help our core committee. The next meeting will be at Laura Rundle’s house, 40 Plum Tree Lane, Sequim on August 14th at 3:30 p.m. ~Sandy Lawrence, Gala Gift Show Chair

Dear Friends, Please do not take the delay of this note as an indication that we were not wholly appreciative of your gift. You have been so generous and allowed our therapists who work with kids the ability to purchase supplies. If you don’t already know, PBH is renovating the former St. Vincent de Paul (we’ve owned it for years) to establish a separate, safe and welcoming building for our Children and Family Services. Last year we served 708 children, and the new programs are expanding all the time. It’s my understanding that Children’s therapists are waiting until this fall to use these funds so that the new space looks as well-supplied as possible. Thanks you for all you do! Rebekah Miller Peninsula Behavioral Health Dear Soroptimists: Your donation to Captain Joseph House Foundation is sincerely appreciated. Please know that the Gold Star Veteran Families of the Fallen, those men and women who have died in combat since 9/11, will have the opportunity to participate in a wonderful 5-night, 6-day week of rest, recreation and family rebuilding. The Captain Joseph House Board of Directors and staff will 'lead from the front' to assure the Family left behind is well cared for during their visit. We believe this opportunity for renewal, building memories and sharing in a family ritual that has been forever changed, will also be one of the most healing steps these Families can take together as they continue their journey in the loss of their loved one. Thank you for your interest and donation to assure that Captain Joseph House is available to all those Families who choose to participate. Betty Reed Schultz Gold Star Mother Executive Director

Dear Soroptimists, Thank you for the generous donation of $300 to Sequim Women’s Soccer Booster Club Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are for girls who can’t afford to pay for summer camps. Your support is greatly appreciated. Molly McAleer Dear Friends: We have received your contribution of $100.00. On behalf of the Foundation, I would like to thank you for your caring. Your donation will support home health and hospice care for the medically needy. It will help pay for the special financial, equipment and emotional needs of hospice patients as well as bereavement support for their families. Because of your contribution and others like it, we are able to fulfill our mission and insure that no one in our area will be denied needed home health or hospice care because they cannot afford it. You will be helping real people undergoing real pain and Suffering—bringing peace, comfort and healing into their lives. The impact of your donation will be especially beneficial because 100% of your dollars will be used for care and assistance.

Thank you for your generosity. Please be aware of both the positive impact your donation will have and how truly it is appreciated. Sincerely, Jenny Collins Executive Director Assured Hospice

Streams of colour

In constant motion Showing shades of beauty hidden Powered by the wind

As it caresses the river of scent Gently, softly, lovingly And moves through the rows

Never stopping, always moving Following the wind

Lavender tributaries In a sensual scented sea of colour

Never ending.
