Caitlin likes helping people. That’s apparent in her job promoting health and fitness through a home-based nutrition company and in her volunteer work with a church youth group in Braddock.

“I especially like working with young people.” she says. “That’s when I needed help the most.”

When she was 12 years old, Caitlin started drinking and experimenting with drugs to deal with abuse and chaos in her family. In spite of her difficult home life, she was able to achieve in school. As a high school freshmen, Caitlin received high honors, lettered in track, and sang in the school choir. But her self-motivation couldn’t overcome the dysfunction at home or a growing dependency on drugs. By the time she was a senior, she quit her extracurricular activities, her grades dropped, and she barely managed to graduate.

As Caitlin continued to struggle with addiction, her life spiraled out of control. She became pregnant but lost custody of her baby, and for a time, Caitlin was homeless. In a desperate moment, she tried to end her pain by overdosing on sleeping pills.

In her mid-20’s, Caitlin met a friend who encouraged her to seek treatment at POWER. It wasn’t an easy transition at first. Although the staff at POWER House welcomed her, Caitlin struggled with anxiety and in her words, “threw a temper tantrum.” But that didn’t stop POWER’s staff from continuing to nurture and support her.

“I never had positive female role models before,” she says. “Even through the initial adjustment, I loved having their support.”

Since graduating from POWER House, Caitlin keeps in touch with former residents and staff. At Christmas she brought her youth group to POWER to sing carols with residents. She is taking steps to regain custody of her daughter and is pursuing an online degree to become a youth minister.

“I believe in giving back,” she says.

Caitlin is celebrating five years in recovery and was honored at last year’s POWER Promises event.

Dear Friends,Last month, I was invited to address a leadership group of the North American Federation of Temple Youth who had gathered at an area synagogue for a weekend of social justice activities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. I was joined by POWER Clinical Director Dr. Leslie Slagel and Associate and Development Director Madelon Edelstone.

We started by asking the group to stand if they knew of anyone who was struggling with alcohol or other drugs. To our surprise, nearly half of the teenagers stood.

What followed was one of the most interesting and energizing experiences in my more than 25-year tenure at POWER. The teens asked thoughtful questions and shared their own experiences.

Several of them stayed after the session to ask additional questions and to thank us for spending the morning with them. A 16-year-old girl from New Jersey told me her cousin died of a drug overdose a couple of years ago, so she was developing a drug prevention curriculum for preteens. I was so impressed by this warm, bright, concerned young woman who will undoubtedly do remarkable things.

As the opioid crisis continues to devastate families, I admit to occasional moments of wondering if I am up to the incredible challenges we face every day. At these times, I think of those wonderful students we met on that snowy Sunday. They give me renewed energy to continue our mission to help women reclaim their lives from the disease of addiction and begin to hope again.

Supporting FamiliesNeutral ground is a vantage point POWER Connection Drug and Alcohol Specialist Madeline Sample prefers when meeting families at Northview Heights and Providence Connections Family Support Centers.

“I want them to see me and know I’m here to help,” says Madeline. “I’m not here to judge them.”

Madeline is part of a new partnership between POWER and Allegheny County’s Family Support Centers (FSC) to provide addiction education, training, and consultation for families and staff at two FSC sites.

With more than 30 years in the human services field, Madeline helps parents who may be struggling with an addiction problem or living with a family member who is. She also provides training for FSC staff so they can recognize potential addiction problems and understand how to address their concerns with parents.

“Addiction affects the whole family, especially kids.” says Madeline. “I hope to be a viable resource for families and help to eliminate the stigma in seeking treatment. It’s all about supporting families so kids can be in a safe and healthy environment.”
