Cairo, the Triumphant City, is Egypts wonderful capital. It is the

largest city in both the Middle East and Africa and lies at the

centre of all routes leading to, and from Asia, Africa and Europe.

The city extends on the banks of the River Nileto the south of itsdelta. Cairo is the administrative capital and, close by, is almost

every Egypt Pyramid, such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the

Ancient Egyptian City of Memphis and Capital of the Old

Kingdom, on the very edge of the city. Cairo provides great and

well organized culture, including art galleries and music halls,

such as the Cairo Opera House. The city also provides some of

the best accommodations and restaurants in the world, such as

the Cairo Marriottand the Four Seasons. Great part of the

incredible and unbelievable charm of the capital of Egypt is the

result of 2000 years mixture of Islamic, Christian Coptic and

Jewish culture. An incredible and unique mixture that still keeps

    on flourishing to this day.

There are actually over 100 pyramidsin Egypt and most of them

are grouped around and near the City of Cairo. Gizais, of

course, the home of Egypt's best known pyramids, including the

largest one in Egypt, that of Khufu. In addition to the major

pyramids, there are also no less than six pyramids built for

queens, together with even smaller cult pyramids. There are also

many tombs, a number of temples, worker villages and thefamous Great Sphinx. One of Cairo's many epitaphs is the "City

of 1,000 Minarets". The citys mosquesdate from the earliest

periods of Islam up to the modern varieties. Here are some of

them: Al-Maridani mosque, El-Aqmar Mosque (Gray Mosque),

the Mosque of El-Hakim, Ibn Tulun Mosque, the Mosque of

Sulayman Pasha al-Khadim, and more and more. The Egyptian

Museumcontains incredible and unique treasures as the The

Tutankhamun Collectionor the Royal Mummies. More than a

million and half tourists visit the museum annually, in addition to

    half a million Egyptians.

Fascinate Pyramids of GizaMonument and Historic Building

One of the most recognizable of the Seven wonders of the

world!!The Giza Necropolis is an archaeological site on the Giz

Plateau, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. This complex of ancie

monuments includes the three pyramid complexes known as th

Great Pyramids, the massive sculpture known as the Great

Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers' village and an industria

complex. It is located some 9 km (5 mi) inland into the desertfrom the old town of Giza on the Nile, some 25 km (15 mi)

southwest of Cairo city centre. The pyramids, which have alwa

loomed large as emblems of ancient Egypt in the Western

imagination,[1][2] were popularised in Hellenistic times, when t

Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the

Seven Wonders of the World. Today it is the only one of the

ancient Wonders still in existence. The Pyramids of Giza and

others are thought to have been constructed to house the

remains of the deceased Pharaohs who ruled over Ancient

Egypt.[3]A portion of the Pharaoh's spirit called his ka was

believed to remain with his corpse. Proper care of the remains was

necessary in order for the "former Pharaoh to perform his new duties as

king of the dead." It's theorized the pyramid not only served as a tomb for

the Pharaoh but also as storage for the various items he would need in

the afterlife. "Getting there:Metro Line 2 now runs from Cairo into Giza,

although it doesn't go all the way to the Pyramids. Get off at Giza station.

The pyramids are 8 km, 15-20 min trip Any number of minibuses and

buses go to the site (known as 'al-haram' in Arabic'), they include the

green public 900 and 997 buses. Taxi; There are essentially two optionsfor this, unmetered & metered: Older black & white taxis - meters are not

used, so don't forget to haggle. Solid-yellow and solid-white taxis - These

are metered and air conditioned. You might save yourself the hassle with

the black and white taxis, and at almost the same cost, if not less

depending on your skill. By bus: From central Cairo, take bus routes 355

or 357. It departs every 20 minutes from the airport and Heliopolis, the

bus at the Abdel Menem Riyad Station in Midan Tahrir, next to the

Egyptian Museum, before continuing out to Giza and the Pyramids. Even

cheaper and more authentic journey, take the regular buses 900 or 997,

from the big central bus station under the overpasses, close to the

museum. Be careful when about getting down, most people will be

honest and help you, but you may encounter scammers who take you to

their camels instead of to the pyramids. A visit to Cairowould be

incomplete without a visit to the famous Pyramids of Gizaand the

EgyptianMuseum located in the center of the town. A visit to the

Sphinx is also a must, since it is the landmark of Egypts captivatinghistory. The EgyptianAntiquitiesMuseumhas more than 120,000

ancient Egyptian artifacts on display including the famous Tutankhamun

collection and the royal Mummyroom which features eleven Pharaonic

dignitaries. Just strolling around downtown and in the older residential

parts of the city where craftsmen work on the sidewalks is also a real

pleasure. Cairooffers several wining and dining options. Make sure to try

Koshray, the traditional Egyptiandish that consists of a delicious

combination of spaghetti, macaroni, rice, chick peas, black lentils, garlic

and spicy tomato chili sauce garnished with fried onions.

    Mosque)Monument and Historic Building

Situated on the summit of the citadel, this is a typical Ottomen,

the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century. The

mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, the oldest son of

Muhammad Ali Pasha, giving the mosque its name. The mosq

is situated on the summit of the citadel, and along with the

citadel, is one of the landmarks and tourist attractions of Cairo.

is still used a place of worship today by the Muslims of Cairo Tmosque is one of the most identifiable features of the city and

can be seen when approaching the city from almost any

direction. The mosque is built with a central dome surrounded

four small and four semicircular domes. The minarets of the

Muhammad Ali Mosque are over eighty meters high. The highe

dome is 52 meters high, with a diameter of 21 meters. The

design of the Muhammad Ali Mosque is based on a plan simila

to that of the Mosque of Sultan Ahmad in Istanbul, and consists

of two parts, the mosque to the east and an open courtyard to

west. The mosque has three entrances, on the north, west and

east walls. The western entrance opens onto the courtyard. On

the west wall of the courtyard is an iron clock, given to

Muhammad Ali by the French King Louis Philippe, in exchange

for the obelisk. The obelisk is now in the Palace de la ConcordParis. Currently, the city of Cairo is working to conserve and

protect the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali. The mosques

dome is undergoing cleaning and restoration. A new lighting

system for the Citadel is being done by an Italian company in

three phases. The first phase, the lighting of the mosque of

Mohammad Ali, is complete. The next phase will be to light the

whole 1.5 kilometres of the surrounding wall, and the third pha

is to light the road of the Citadel from the entrance to the end.

Visiting the Citadel is one of Cairos landmarks and its best

combined with visiting Al Hussein Mosque and Mosque of

al-Rafai which are located just below the Citadel. Important!

Saqqara (Sakkara) PyramidsMonument and Historic Building

Saqqara (or Sakkara, Saqqarah in Arabic) is a vast, ancient

burial ground in Egypt, serving as the cemetery for the Ancient

Egyptian capital, Memphis. The ancient city of Mephis is located

about 10 miles south of Cario. Saqqara was designated as a

World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. Saqqara features

numerous pyramids, including the world famous Step pyramid of

Djoser, sometimes referred to as the Step Tomb due to its

rectangular base. Thisis also the most photographed and easily

recognizable of the pyramids. Saqqara is located about 30 km

south of modern-day Cairo and covers an area of around 7 by

1.5 km . T he earliest burials of nobles can be traced back to the

First Dynasty, at the north side of the Saqqara plateau The first

royal burials at Saqqara, comprising underground galleries, date

to the Second Dynasty. The last Second Dynasty kingKhasekhemwy was buried in his tomb at Abydos, but also built a

funerary monument at Saqqara consisting of a large rectangular

enclosure, known as Gisr el-Mudir. It probably inspired the

monumental enclosure wall around the Step Pyramid complex At

Saqqara, the oldest complete hewn-stone building complex

known in history was built: Djoser's step pyramid, built during the

third dynasty. On a clear day in Giza one can see the Djoser

Pyramid in Saqqara. Giza is roughly 10.5 miles north of Saqqara.

Besides Pharaoh Djoser, there were 16 other pharaohs that

constructed their burial pyramids at Saqqara including : Pharaoh

Userkaf Pharaoh Djedkare Pharaoh Menkauhor Pharaoh Unas

Pharaoh Teti Pharaoh Pepi I Pharaoh Merenre Pharaoh Pepi II

Contrary to popular belief, the name Saqqara is not derived from

the ancient Egyptian funerary god Sokar, but from the BeniSaqqar who are a local Berber tribe. Their name means "Sons of

Saqqar." Getting around! The pyramids are easy enough to

walk around, There are also horse and buggies or you can take a

camel ride. Some Camel Tips:Bargain hard before you get on

the camel. Don't take a photo of the camel unless you are

prepared to pay. If you are feeling harassed then grab the

Policeman to help you out. How to get to the Pyramids: A taxi

from the center of Cairo is probably the easiest way to get to the

Pyramids, although mini and micro buses also make frequent

trips. An air-conditioned bus also departs regularly from the

Midan Tahrir. Also check with your hotel who can help you

    organize tours.

    Citadel (Al-Qalaa)Monument and Historic Building

The Citadel is a fortification, a defensive wall, and was once

popular for its fresh breeze and amazing views of the city. It is

also known as Saladin Citadel of Cairo. When Saladdin

established the Ayyubid Sultanate in 1171, and eliminated the

Fatimids, he was still fighting the Crusaders in the Levant. It was

therefore important to strengthen the defences of Egypt, which

had suffered repeated attacks by the Crusaders. He

commissioned the construction of a fortress to protect Egypt's

capital, and the natural spot was a hill overlooking all of Cairo,

where the Citadel still stands today. The Citadel is a large fort

which comprises of 2 mosques, the Police Museum and the

Military. The Citadel is sometimes referred to as Mohamed AliCitadel because it contains the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, built

on the summit of the Citadel Museum. This has is one of the

famous tourist attractions in Cairo, where you can get to see the

vision of Muhammad Ali, especially the mosque bearing his

name. The mosque is the main focal point of the fort can be

located within the Citadel, it is famous for its rich collection and

historical buildings and was originally a palace during the reign of

Mohamed Ali, the founder of the royal family that ruled Egypt

from 1805 through 1952. It is one of Cairo's most visited historic

structures and is also considered one of the world's most

impressive Mediaeval defence fortresses. In addition to a military

complex, it had served as Egypt's rulers' residence from the 12th

to the 19th centuries and is now home to several differentmuseums with the most distinctive and recognisable being the

pyramids, two of which are among the oldest, largest and best

preserved in Egypt. Sneferu's Pyramids are easy to reach, the

are more difficult to travel too.The Bent Pyramid and the Red

Pyramid were constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Snofru

(2613-2589 BC). The shape of the Bent Pyramid is unique, and

represents a transitional pyramid. The Red Pyramid is the worl

first true smooth-sided pyramid. The Red Pyramids name deriv

from the color of the limestone used to build it. . The pyramid is

entered from the north. The entrance is almost halfway way the

the side, and is reached by a metal staircase. The interior is weworth exploring, it as many features used in the Great Pyramid

located about 2km south. It is one of the rare pyramids were

most of it's casing is still intact. This is considered the first true

pyramid in Egypt. The bent shape, which occurs about half way

up, is believed to be caused by sudden change in plans by the

Ancient Egyptians. Egyptologist believe that the plan slope wa

changed (from 60 to 55) to accommodate cracks in the

    National Military MuseumMuseums

Don't be put off visiting Egypt's National Military Museum by the

thought of boring displays of weapons and historical uniforms.

Housed in the former Harem Palace of Mohammed Ali, the

founder of modern Egypt, the National Military Museum is located

within the Cairo Citadel, a walled complex of fortifications and

various types of buildings which sits on bluff overlooking Cairo. The view alone is worth the trip! A statue of one of Egypt's

historic military heroes, Ibrahim Pasha, is on display as you enter

the museum. Better known as the son of Mohammed Ali of

Egypt, Ibrahim Pasha began to command the Egyptian forces

when he was a teenager and later become known as the Wali or

Governor of Egypt, Sudan, Syria, Hejaz, Morea, Thasos and

Crete. Seen as being among the best managed exhibitions in the

country, the museum's ornate interior is filled with displays

chronicling Egyptian history from the ancient era of the Pharaohs

through the Middle Ages and Islamic conquests. The museum

features an impressive collection of arms, armor, uniforms, maps

and models through the ages, while the exterior section of the

museum is flanked in modern weaponry used in Egypt's recent

Middle East conflicts. Galleries are devoted to various branchesof the armed forces, the structure of the army in each historical

era and a large section of the museum is devoted to Egypt's early

victories against Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Islamic Cairo is the given to medieval Cairo, noted for its

historically important mosques and other Islamic monuments. It is

overlooked by the Cairo Citadel. Despite its name, Islamic Cairo

is neither more or less Islamic than the rest of the city, but it's the

area of the city which holds the most, the greatest and the most

famous Islamic monumentsThis part of the city is fundamentally

different from more modern Downtown district and is a unique experien

for any traveler going to Cairo.Unlike Islamic quarters in other

international cities, people, often quite poor, still live here. A cemtyre o

of worship, trade, shopping and local commuting - it's a must-see for a

visitors and deserves at least a couple of days exploring. Attrcations

includeThe attractions include, Al-Hakim Mosque, one of the largest

Fatimid mosques in Cairo. The Bayt al-Sihaymi, the best-preserved

Ottoman merchant house. (This is off the beaen track and a place of

natural beauty worth the visit). The Qalawun Complex. Built by MamSultan Al-Nasir in honor of his father Qalawun. The complex contains a

mosque, an Islamic school and the mausoleum where Sultan Qalawun

buried. The school in particular is often described as the world's secon

most beautiful, second only to the Taj Mahal, of which there are

similarirties. The Khan el-Khalili market lines the streets and alleyways

to al-Azhar Street. The Al-Azhar Mosque is one of Cairo's oldest

mosques and the world's oldest operating university. Al-Azhar Park. Th

Al-Azhar Park is overlooking Darb al-Ahmar and the Citadel. Built on a

rubbish dump, it's today a green lung of Cairo and a pleasant area to

stroll around and enjoy views of the city.Muqattam Hills is located on th

outskirts of Cairo, just beyond the Citadel. The Church of Saint Simeon

the Tanner is located at the foot of the hills. On a cliff wall is a depictio

prayers of Saint Simeon the Tanner and Pope Abraham. Muqattam Hi

also provides a spectacular view of Cairo. Islamic Cairo is not the bes

place for quality eating, although some restaurants can be found in the

Khan al-Khalili area. Islamic Cairo is definitely not the place for alcoholRather, settle down for some tea and shisha. Khan el-Khalili is infamo

for its pickpockets. Stay on your guard in crowds, but don't be afraid to

venture into the smaller, darker alleys they're quite safe, and you'll f

the more interesting shops here. Modest clothing is definitely a

requirement. Women with bare legs and shoulders will be asked by ma

custodians of mosques to use smocks to cover these bare parts. Shoe

should be removed before entering mosques.

Whether its dusty streets filled with honking motorists, traders'

bantering at chaotic markets or sleek skyscrapers gracing the

banks of the Nile, Cairo is a city of contradictory yet

fascinating extremes. While it is easy to spend endless days

viewing the relics of a bygone age and then to settle for a mea

the hotel restaurant, one of the best ways to get a real feel for city is through the local cuisine. For a taste of authentic Cairo,

Shawarma, a sandwich-like pita wrap of shaved lamb, goat, ve

has become a fast-food staple across the Arab world, as has th

traditional kebab consisting of meat and vegetables. Falafel, a

fried ball that is made out of fava beans which have been spice

and put into a pita bread is a another specialty as well as

Fatayeer, a pancake filled with fruits or cream. But if you are in

the mood to try what some Egyptians consider their national di

then Ful Medames is the dish to order at breakfast. Made from

a spiced stew of long-cooked lentils or fava beans the dish the

topped with tahihi or olive oil and is served with a boiled egg an

Baladi, which is Egyptian bread. When it comes to eating out,

visitors have quite a selection from the Khan el Khalili Restaura

pyramids in Giza then a stop at Andrea is in order where bread

While there are thousands of tea and coffee houses scattered

along every street corner in Cairo where you will see Egyptian

With your own private Egyptologist guide to lead the way, you'll

enjoy personalized attention on your private tour of Alexandria.

As this is a private tour, you can determine the amount of time

you'd like to spend at each of the sites in Alexandria you'll visit.

The second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria has an atmosphere

that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern and is famous

for its Roman remains. Alexandria was founded by Alexander

the Great in 312 B.C., and was the capital of Graeco-Roman

Egypt. Your first stop in this historic city is the catacombs of

Kom ash-Shuqqafa, a Roman burial site whose family tomb

reveals the merging of Egyptian and Roman art and architecture.

Descend below ground to visit the tomb and Caracalla Hall.

Back above ground, continue to Pompey's Pillar, an 82-foot(25-meter) granite column built to honor Emperor Diocletian, who

freed the besieged city and brought food to its starving people.

Continuing to the next site your guide will show you the citadel of

Quitbey. After lunch (normally included) you will visit the famous

Alexandria Library. In contrast to the ancient architecture found

throughout Egypt, the Norwegian-designed building is a striking

piece of modern design. A copy of every book published in the

world is kept in the library, making it one of the great literary sites

in the world. The library also houses several exhibitions relating

Stepping out of bustling Cairo, you'll find yourself surrounded by

the desert and thousand years old archeological sites standing

proudly up against time passing by and marking the history of

mankind. The Sphinx, for instance, one of the seven wonders of

the ancient world, and on the south west of Cairo, the desert

plateau of Sakkara, a 3,000 year old site and one of the oldest

ancient Egyptian monuments. The pyramids rise out of the desert

and is surely a fascinating experience to take while you're touring

Egypt and its many wonders! Many travel agents in Cairo offer

jeep safari tours through the wide desert, there you'll also escape

noise and pollution of the city and enjoy the silence and the

fascinating dunes moved by the wind! A nice option also would

be to take a guided tour on horseback riding through the sand

trails, and perhaps even spending a night out in the desert under

the moon and the many constellations! This is an experience not

to forget and will almost make you feel in a world apart, swept by

    Cairo Opera HouseTheaters and Performance

Egypt's love and appreciation for the performing arts dates back

to pharaonic times, so it should come as of no surprise that Cairo

has a state-of-the art Opera House. Designed by a team of

Egyptian and Japanese architects in 1988, the seven story

Opera House is located on the south end of Gezira Island and is

considered a masterpiece of postmodern Islamic architecture. The Opera House complex houses several galleries, including

the Museum of Modern Art, restaurants and concert halls. It is

equipped with the latest audio-visual system and the main

theater, which is used for opera, ballet and classical music

performances can seat 1,200 spectators. A second theater

seating 500 people is used for film festivals and conferences

while a third, open-air theater has the capacity to seat 1,000.

The original opera house, Khedivial (Royal) Opera House

opened in 1869 under the order of Khedive Ismail to celebrate

the opening of the Suez Canal. The Khedive soon

commissioned an opera to reflect ancient Egyptian history,

resulting in the famed Verdi opera, Aida. The Khedivial Opera

House was the first on the African continent to perform world

famous operas and symphonic masterpieces. It was completelydestroyed by a fire in 1971. Today, the Cairo Opera House is

part of the country's National Cultural Center whose aim is to

promote and encourage art, music and dance and to preserve

traditional Arabic music. Performances of ballet, opera or

symphonic works are staged with Egyptian companies or in

cooperation with foreign ensembles or soloists. Seminars and

General TipsDo not drink alcohol during RamadanGeneral Tips

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It lasts 29

to 30 days. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which

participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual

relations from dawn until sunset . Egyptians are forbidden from

drinking in public places during Ramadan and therefore alcohol is

seldom served outside hotels during this month and you may

have to show your passport to prove that you're not an Egyptian.

    Budget ArtGeneral Tips

Cairo, the largest city in Africa, home to the Egyptians, and

offering an outstanding array of art; the question is where

to start from? Islamic Cairo in the center of the old town

offers a great example of Islamic architecture; look up from

the small windy roads to admire the wooden terraces and

the small turrets that characterize the houses. Next is

the Mosque of Ibn Taluud, the oldest one in the city, the

queue is often long but it is worth the wait. The world

famous al-Azhar Mosque is the next must see, it is home to

one of the largest universities in the Middle East along with an ancient

collection of books, art and manuscripts.

In winter, especially January, the temperature is in or around 0

degrees. (Normally the colder months are from November to

January) The locals wrap up and generally wear something on

their heads Inside it can be colder as the floors are usually tiled

and they are designed to be cold in the hot summer months (n

so good for winter) Take a jacket/sweater/scarf, and wear sock

(a little strange if youve been her in the summer!). Also, a paigloves might be a good idea Summer in Cairo is hot and at

night it's high 20'. You can wear trainers/sneakers for anything

that you do. Flip flops or sandals are also a good alternative. In

winter the days are hot but it can be quite windy. Bring a scarf

wrap over your face. Sun Glasses a must as well as a hat, wid

brimmed until you get used to the heat and sun screen.

    WarningsBeware of people asking moneyWarnings

Be verycarefulwhen someone offers you help in Egyptas thalways want moneyfrom you and this includes the tourist polic

and guards at the pyramids. When in Cairo always be

suspiciousof people's intentions. Cairo is a supplier of essen

oils to the big perfume houses, but be very careful while

purchasing one as you may end up paying ten times more than

    its actual price.
