This review process occurs every four years in every school in Queensland and last week it was our turn in the cycle. The reviewers look at everything from the way we decide on our improvement agenda, to the way we collect and analyse data, from the successful learning environments we create to our focus on academics and social success, from our interventions to the way we use resources across the school, from the way we build capability in staff to the way we build partnerships with the school community and everything in between. The team was very impressed with the high calibre of work happening within our school as we knew they would be. What’s not to be impressed about? They were noticeably impressed with our units of work in writing as we do not use the suite of resources developed by the Department of Education, instead choosing to use the Australian Curriculum and the Achievement Standards to develop our own units for our students in our school. And we know they are great units and exactly what our students need the proof is in the incredible writing that is shared with the team every 5 weeks when every student’s writing on demand book is collected and calibrated, with feedback to teachers and students. I thought I would share just one of many pieces of writing I get to read here at Caravonica. This is from Dylan in Year 5. SPLASH! WHISTLE! GASP! In the middle of the Pacific Ocean Corey Pitch was diving off his boat in search of something picked up on the radar. Something had been detected when Corey’s boat had gone over it. Corey dived in, hoping to find something valuable. “That is amazing,” he gasped, catching his breath. Corey was a lanky mid 20 year old with eyes as blue as the ocean he was diving in. Corey had dark brown hair, and because of his studies in marine biology he had an unmeasurable love for the sea. But what happened that day made him a little more scared of his dream. In the vast blue ocean Corey was diving down and discovered a huge wooden pirate ship covered in barnacles. He went in closer and the only thing he could hear was the gentle waves sloshing above him. Corey felt come of the wood as he picked it up and almost instantly snapped it in half. With that he realised that the ship must have been down there for centuries. CREAK! SLOSH! WOW! Corey swam inside the dilapidated ship and found the treasure room. It was filled with gold and silver. As he touched a piece of gold something grabbed him and dragged him deep into the ship. He was dragged into the captain’s quarters and sat down in a chair. A skeleton was looking at him. With one wave of the skeleton’s hand the quarters emptied of water. Corey screamed into his mask. “What are you?” he breathed. Then the skeleton spoke (in a Texan accent), “You were sneaking ‘round my ship. I had to know what y’all were doing.” Corey explained that he was a marine biologist, but before he was let go the skeleton extracted an oath that Corey would never reveal the location of the skeletons ship or touch the treasure. The skeleton then took Corey up to his boat and Corey was relieved the skeleton wasn’t going to hurt him. Corey broke the surface and took off his mask. As he scanned the area he soon realised something was terribly wrong. His boat had disappeared… Speaking of ships and the sea… I absolutely loved all the pirates who came to school on Friday. What a wonderful sight they were and what a wonderful way to raise awareness of childhood cancer. My thanks to our student leaders and Mrs Wilkinson who coordinated such a lovely event! Finally, on sports day we allocate each child a number to help with the organization and running of events on the day. This numbering system is used for Barron River sports events already e.g. cross country events. This simply involves using a permanent marker and writing a number on their arm/hand. Last week, from Wednesday – Friday, we hosted a team of reviewers from the School Improvement Unit. This review process occurs

every four years in every school in Queensland and last week it was our turn in the cycle.
