Mode of transport We arrived at the airport at 8:30 am. It was pretty good.

We then took the metro to the train station: Kowgens Nytorv and headed for the generator hotel located at 10 minute walk from the metro (Kowgens Nytorv) station.

We h a d a v e r y w a r m w e l c o m e , t h e accommodat ion condi t ions were wel l accompanied with good atmosphere.

We have discovered the town with a treasure hunt.

We think that the first thing to expose is that Danish people are very friendly and welcoming.

Our trip was very good. The Generator's hotel was so good. We took everyday a continental breakfast. The rooms were very cute ! (four persons per room)

We enjoyed it so much. The atmosphere in the group was very relaxed and festive. Many things were seen in the town.

This students’group  is a good and a very wonderful team.

Not 4 teams like in the game in the town, but really : Just one Big Big team.

Enjoy it !

Preparation of professional meetings

The contacting process in order to visit Health and Social Institutions

Though we were on an English Seminar trip, we wished to invest our 3 days in Copenhagen by visiting different type of Health and Social institutions and develop our insights in the European Social Policies by the example of Denmark.

We decided that each one of the 16 members of our group would look for information on that matter on their own, before gathering them. The investigation led to 7 interesting social ones.

It was then decided that Clemence and Henri would be in charge of contacting the different concerned managers.

Before we get to the point, we would like to highlight two facts. Straight away, we were amazed not only by the systematic warm welcome of those we talked to, but also by their fluent spoken English. More over, we were informed that our visiting time fell on a holiday period in Copenhagen.

And so, here are the results of this contacting process :

1. By the help of Mrs Catherine GONTHIER from the International Affairs Department of the IRTS Hauts-de-France, we came to be in touch with Mrs Bodil DAMSGAARD ([email protected]), consultant in «  Social Paedagogerne  » a professionnal social formation center. She was interested in welcoming us and confirmed an appointment on Tuesday the 17th of October, w i th her co l l eague Mrs He len HOFF ([email protected]).

2. Still, trough the help of Mrs Bodil DAMSGAARD, we had the contact of Mrs Kate Helene JENSEN ([email protected]) who is a social educator and works at « SLOTSVAENGET  »  : I n s t i t u t i o n w i t h i n s o c i a l p s y c h i a t r y. Unfortunately, Mrs JENSEN was on holiday, and so was not able to welcome us.

3. The « Borgercenter Handicap » provides assistance and support for citizens with permanent physical or mental impairment. After giving us the email adress ([email protected]) to which we could forward our request, the secretary Mrs Johana, let us know that she was very interested by our coming. Meanwhile, she informed us that they faced an understaff situation.

4. By a person we know in Copenhagen, we managed to enter in relation with Mrs Anne-Lise HANSEN (phone  : +45 3913 5101 / mail  : b b 4 0 @ s u f . k k . d k ) . M r s H a n s e n i s « Demensradgivning », that means « Dementia Referent » : she is a councilor for families that live with dementia and also  teaches and coaches professionals in regards to solving different issues regarding dementia. Mrs Hansen answered us that she was pleased to meet 5 or 6 of us on the Tuesday the 17th of October afternoon.

5. Even if she is not part of this institution, Mrs Hansen’s off ice is located in the «  Fa e l l e d g a r d e n N u r s i n g H o m e  » . Faelledgarden is the most important home for elderly people in Denmark. Mrs Hansen gave us the email address of Mrs Hannah HJORTH ([email protected]), the actual manager, but our emails remained without any response.

Meanwhile, once there, Mrs Hansen got the answer of the second floor director who welcomed us for visiting the entire place.

6. The « OK-Hjemmet Lotte  »  is a home for elderly people. The secretary we had on the phone gave us the email adress ([email protected]) and the direct phone line ( +45 27 15 16 14 ) of Mrs Gunvor HECTOR, the manager. Via email, Mrs HECTOR apologised for not being able to welcome us being on vacation. She then oriented our request to Mrs Dominique N’GUYEN the manager of a similar type of home.

7. Mrs Dominique N’GUYEN, contacted by mail ([email protected]) informed us that she unfortunately could not give statisfaction to our request because of understaff situation.

8. Last but not least, linked to the «  Ok-Hjemmet Lotte », we were given an newspaper article on the life of Mrs Thyra FRANK, who was its charismatic founder. Her extraordinary and impressive professionnal curriculum vitae spells out a strong commitment to elderly citizens, and finally led her to becoming the actuel Minister for Senior Citizens of Danemark. We never had the honour to meet her, but her personnal secretary Mrs Kim KROGH ([email protected]) and her personnal concilor Mr Michael CHRISTENSEN (phone  : +45 40 56 96 12) both expressed their gratitude to our interest in Mrs FRANK but had deep regrets in not being able to welcome us.

Here are all the different contacts we went through to build our disccovery of a part of Danish Social institutions in Copenhagen.

Meeting with a dementia specialist Anne-Lise Hansen is one of the five reference persons for

dementia in Copenhagen

Anne-Lise Hansen is commissioned by the government to train professionals and the Danish population to support people suffering from dementia (Alzheimer or other, Huntington, frontal dementia ...).

Her activities are multiple: - After a diagnosis, Anne-Lise Hansen meets the patient and their family at home (3 to 8 new families per week). She can there explain the illness, the necessary adjustments in behavior, the assistance that people can receive, how to avoid conflicts, etc. - She can be contacted by a nursing home team who experience difficulties with a resident ; and then she will perform supervisory time - She sets up group talks for family caregivers (spouses, children ...) - She gives courses to health professionals - She organizes awareness-raising events for nonprofessional audiences : professionals from the private sector (supermarkets ...), seniors clubs - She can be requested by a home helper who notices something abnormal, even before the diagnosis is made

- Mrs Hansen may be asked to qualify and quantify the assistance needed by the person at home. Aids will then be proposed to them, with complete financial support by the government. She focuses her support on the relationships between the family and the patient. A real mesh has been gradually established, with professionals of different levels trained in dementia. There are referents to the highest degree like Mrs Hansen. Then each residence for the elderly has a trained intermediate professional, and then each floor (like in Faelledgaarden) has a referent to the lower degree. Any professional in difficulty therefore calls first and foremost his floor referent ; if the latter is not able to help the institution's referent is called ; if the solution is not satisfying yet, Mrs Hansen is called. It is also important to personalize every accompanying program as each person develops its own “style” of dementia. Some things are explained by the life story of the person, others by the degree of brain damages, others by the previous personality etc ...

No institutionnal power ! …

The Faelledgaarden nursing home

Faelledgaarden is the biggest residence for the elderly in Denmark. Opened in 2013, it welcomes 193 residents and has been built on an already existing structure, which explains certain architectural details that are not optimal for disoriented people (big units, long corridors). About 300 people work there.

Faelledgaarden is a structure that is completely open to the city with different common places open to the public. Concerts or ballets are regularly held there and are also open to the public.

Inside, the atmosphere is modern and refined. The furniture is designed so that the residents feel at home. It does not look like community

furniture as we usually see in French EHPAD. The chosen style is contemporary Danish: cloth chairs that are not protected from stains etc.

Faelledgaarden has an open day reception for people suffering from cognitive difficulties who live outside of the home, and participants are taken by bus every morning. Daycare is often an intermediate step between home and residence.

The Faelledgaarden residence has different common places:

Physiotherapy activity room with sports equipment, cafeteria open to the public, hairdressing salon open to the public, chapel, dentist cabinet, monthly sale of clothes ...

Resident housing :

Each resident has an individual apartment, with at least one closed room. The largest apartments are 50m2. No furniture is provided, the person brings their own. No security restrictions, a kitchen area is even planned. The facilities are modern, ceiling rails, washbasin and WC with adjustable height etc. The entry into residence is contractualized by renting the apartment in the manner of a city apartment. The resident has the choice to subscribe or not to every offered service : housekeeping, meals, laundry maintenance etc.

The subscription to all services raises the rental price of 10,000 Danish crowns (about 1 400

euros) per month (accommodation + hotel services). A monthly reduction of 3 000 Danish crowns can be granted in case of financial difficulties of the resident. The cost of running the institution and especially all payment of salaries to the helpers is borne by the government. Note that in Denmark no financial aid is paid directly to the elderly person, whether at home or in residence. 60% of Faelledgaarden residents have a neurodegenerative disease.

Floors 4 and 5 are protected units in which all r e s i d e n t s s u f f e r f r o m i m p o r t a n t neurodegenerative disease. The furniture is more adapted, and the staff more numerous.

Socialpaedagogerne in Copenhague Helen Hoff received us in the Socialpaedagogerne in Copenhagen This association is a social labor union who works for the 39  000 social educators of the country. They focus their interventions in 3 areas : - Working conditions for members (salary, contracts, vacation) - The profession (social éducation) - Social Politics Helen Hoff is in charge of the department of Politics and International Social Affairs and develop the items : - Visibility of the profession - Influence social politics - International work, looking for inovating

solutions for vulnerable citizens (AEIJI and others associations sources)

In Denmark, there is two types of social workers. The first one, named social worker, is the « cold hand  ». They work in offices, far from citizens and represent Authorities. The second one, named social educator, is the « warm hand ».

These everyday life specialists are face to face with citizens in vulnerable situation.

The social educator work in four sectors : - Children and youngers at risk (foster care, foster home, family treatment) - Marginalised citizens (street level, mental health center, addiction clinics) - Disabled citizens - New areas (hospital, prison, police, asylum)

Nowadays in Denmark, they are two tendancies in Social Politics : - Rehabilitation in the specialized field of adults based on  : Citizens need and wishes as focal point, interdisciplinary and coordinated initiative and time bounded. -  Early initiatives concerning children and youngsters. The « least invasive intervention » is privileged  : The right intervention for the problem detected, and earlier intervention earn energy and money for effiency.

The hostel Generator is located in the city center. It allows you to visit everything on foot and it is close to the metro and shops.

The breakfast is plentiful and the nights are silent.

There are plenty of convivialities, games and rest.

This is a very nice hotel to recommend.

Team building

Copenhagen is a playground...

Monday afternoon, we discovered the city of Copenhagen and its main monuments. We were divided into four teams and traveled through the city using a map and resolving clues about the main tourist sites. In this game, we realized challenges to earn extra points. They allowed us to speak English with the Danish and make nice encounters. We had a lot of fun during this time of sharing which was also very sporty !!

Free time

Walks took place during our free time. Between the small mermaid, the amusement park TIVOLI, the small port of NYHAVN with its colorful houses and the discovery of Christiania, kilometers were chained. Whether in a small group or all together, each of us discovered the city according to its desires.

Shopping

On the shopping side, Copenhagen does not lack of temptations: Danish chocolates, luxury clothes, toys, home furnitures, ... there is something for everyone. Smaller shops are to be discovered in the small streets and major brands on the main streets. All our Danish crowns have been spent for our pleasure and that of our relatives.

The relaxing times at the youth hostel

The Hotel Generator has many relaxation areas: petanque, shuffleboard, rooftop terrace, lounges or TV area, all of them enjoyed all of us, giving place to discuss, exchange, work and reminding our busy days.
