The trail invites you to trace the footsteps of 19th Century doctor Sir Frederick Treves and his life in Dorset. As a resident of Dorchester and a supporter of the hospital, Treves was an eminent surgeon famous for befriending the "Elephant Man" and performing a life-saving operation on the hospital's patron, King Edward VII.

In1875hequalifiedasamemberoftheRoyalCollegeofSurgeonsandintheprevious

yearhehadbecomealicen:ateoftheSociety

ofApothecaries.

AJerholdingahousesurgeonshipattheLondonHospital,in1876hebecameresidentmedicalofficerattheRoyalNa:onalHospitalforScrofula(latertheRoyalSeaBathingHospital)atMargate,towhichhisbrotherWilliamwashonorarysurgeon.

Scrofulabecamethesubjectofhisfirstresearch.

ABlossomingCareerTrevescon:nuedtostudyandin1878hepassedtheexamina:onsfortheFellowshipoftheRoyalCollegeof

Surgeons.Inthefollowingyearhegaveupprac:ceinDerbyshireandreturnedtotheLondonHospitalinordertofillthepostofSurgicalRegistrar.LaterthatyearavacancyoccurredonthesurgicalstaffofthehospitalandinSeptember1879hewas

appointedassistantsurgeon,beforebecomingafullsurgeonin1884atjustthirty-oneyearsold!

HebecameaHouseSurgeonin1876(theseniormemberofthesurgicalhousestaffresponsiblefortheexecu:onoftheordersofthea`endingsurgeon,andwhoalsosubs:tuteswhenthea`endingsurgeonisnotpresent).Formuchoftherestofhis

career,TreveswasassociatedwithLondonhospitalandby1898hewasappointedConsul:ngSurgeon.

IntheMedicalSchoola`achedtotheLondonHospitalhewasDemonstratorofPrac:calAnatomy,LecturerinAnatomy,TeacherofOpera:veSurgeryandLectureronSurgery.Hebecameknownrapidlyforhiscarefulwork,beingfortunate

enoughtoworkata:mewhenLister'steachinghadallowedanincreaseinthenumberofabdominalsurgerytakingplace.

Trevesgavemanymorelecturesandpublishedbooksthroughouthiscareer.In1883,hewasawardedtheJacksonianPrizeforhisdisserta:onen:tled‘ThePathology,DiagnosisandTreatmentofObstruc:onoftheIntes:neinitsVariousFormsin

theAbdominalCavity’.

Hewasasuccessfulabdominalsurgeon,workingwiththedevelopmentofbothanaesthe:csandan:sep:cmethods.

Trevesre:redat45yearsofagefromtheLondonHospitaltoprac:seprivately.ThisshowsjusthowsuccessfulTreveswas

becauseyouhadtobeextremelygood,respected,andwellpaidtobeabletodothis.

doctorsandnursesaretrainedinanatomyandproceduresusingmodels,mul:-mediaandsimula:onsofthehumanbody.

Invasivesurgeryhasbeenreplacedinmanycasesbymethodswhichminimisetheincisionandusemicro-instruments.
