This economic stimulus package provided economic relief in a number of ways with probably the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) being the method most often talked about. Along with the PPP funding that became available, the stimulus package included funding for airports which were expected to see a significant downturn in traffic thus causing further economic hardship. Combined, CCB was eligible to receive just over $194,000 in federal aid. After meetings with family members and Airport staff, CCB put a plan together on how to best utilize the funding. It was decided to spend about 1/2 of the funds on equipment and the other half on maintenance. Based on that decision, Airport staff proceeded to acquire a Genie Telehandler and a Crafco crack sealer and has set aside the remaining funds for an asphalt project that is currently being planned. The Equipment Genie 4104 Telehandler The Airport found it had a need to have equipment that could handle disabled aircraft. In the past, a forklift had been utilized for such duties; unfortunately, the forklift had its limitations including not being very versatile, particularly off-road, having a severe restriction on how high it could lift an aircraft, and its general maneuverability. After much research on the various types of material handlers available, it was determined a "telehandler" would be the best fit for CCB. A telehandler is designed to lift more, go higher, maneuver better in tight areas. The Airport acquired a Genie 4104 Telehandler that is capable of lifting up to 8,800 pounds, extend to 44 feet in the air, has 4-wheel drive, and is designed to operate efficiently and effectively off-road. The photo above shows the first use of the telehandler to remove a disabled aircraft and it performed flawlessly. Crafco Crack Sealer Asphalt maintenance is one of CCB's biggest challenges and matters are not made any better when large cracks develop in the asphalt and go unrepaired. Airport staff already had a crack sealer; however, it was very small and difficult to use. And it would take forever to heat the tar enough to be able to spread easy. So it was determined that a new crack sealer would be a valuable investment. Initially, staff looked into buying a used crack sealer due to cost considerations. Unfortunately, most of the used crack sealers staff could locate were well used to the point that staff was reluctant to consider such used equipment. So after a little research, staff found a company in Fontana that manufactures crack sealers. After a few discussions with the manufacturer, a crack sealer was built for CCB. In the photo to the right you can see Airport staff using the crack sealer for the first time and, so far, they are happy with the purchase. The Project The remaining funds will be put towards asphalt projects on the airport. While there are many areas that need funding for asphalt, the concentration for these projects will be areas that would otherwise not be included in the Airport's normal capital improvement projects that are funded with FAA grant money. Areas being currently considered for these funds include the taxiway, apron and ramp located at the northwest section of the airport and the driveway entryway asphalt leading from the 13th West entry gate (south of Foothill Aircraft). We will share more information about these projects as they are developed.

Maniac-Mikes will be open Monday, September 7th. Come by and check out our red, white and blue specials. Its not getting any cooler so remember to drink plenty of water. On that note, we will NOT be serving soup until it cools down. Hopefully by October we can start showcasing our homemade soups again. Have a wonderful September.

Happy Labor Day!

A message from Bob Cable, President of Cable Airport Inc...

If you are a San Bernardino County resident, we need your help to spread the word!!As the craziness continues throughout the nation and people are getting more and more upset about whatever position you take, let’s stop, breathe, take a minute and see what is going to affect us in our City and surrounding community especially during this upcoming election. As everyone should recall that the San Antonio Heights Association took a position of legally opposing the County regarding its forced annexation into the FP-5 “tax” district. And because of the San Antonio Heights Association's successful legal challenge, the County of San Bernardino refunded all the taxes that had been collected over the prior two years. The County did not only refund the residents of San Antonio Heights they also refunded the illegal FP-5 assessments paid by City of Upland residents even though this group was not a party of the legal action. As a result of this legal action, and in order for the County to collect even more money from their constituents, there is now a ballot measure in the November election that will put this illegal tax to the vote of the people for the entire County of San Bernardino not just the Upland and San Antonio Heights residents.

The time for you to act is now! As president of Cable Airport and the San Antonio Heights Association, I strongly urge you to vote YES on Measure U. If passed, this measure would eliminate the illegal additional tax that was illegally imposed on us as residents. Enough is truly enough! Our fire service has been impacted. As a San Antonio Heights resident, we now “share” Station 12 with the residents in north Upland and should not have to pay more in taxes for less services. This is not to say that we do not love our men and women in the fire service. As a resident of San Antonio Heights and as a large business owner in the City of Upland, I/we have always supported, and will continue to support , our local law enforcement as well as our firefighters; however, the mismanagement of public funds by anyone is completely unacceptable. This effort to raise taxes is just the beginning for County residents near and far. County Fire is currently operating with a $29 million budget shortfall. This deficit is a County Administration issue that the Board of Supervisors needs to work through so they can operate within their means and not on the backs of those that are already pay for fire service through their property taxes. Even though the County Fire has acquired several lucrative assets along the way they continue to operate with such a large deficit and the outcome of this legislation passing would result in an annual assessment of $157.26 per parcel that will continue to increase up to 3% each year. Managing the budget effectively now is a more feasible result or solution than expecting the taxpayers to be required to supplement the County’s continued mismanagement of public funds. If you have questions, feel free to get more information on the reformsbcounty.com website or contact me via the Airport Office. As a concerned citizen, I strongly urge you to educate yourself on the issue.
