Work SkillsEveryday, at OCE programs throughout Oregon’s prison system, inmates are gaining work experience, learning new job skills, and preparing for their eventual release into the community. Over 95% of Oregon’s inmates do, in fact, return to their community. At OCE, we believe our job is not only to provide our customers with great products and services, we are also in the business of producing better citizens for Oregon.

trainingOCE’s programs provide relevant certification and work skills training to prepare inmates for private sector experiences once they are released. Teaching inmates meaningful work skills and a strong work ethic not only helps them find work once they are released, it also changes their outlook on life, helping to make them better equipped to make a successful transition into our communities and less likely to repeat criminal behavior.

OpportunityOregon Corrections Enterprises (OCE) is committed to providing inmates with the experience and tools needed to help ease their transition to our communities. Wood Cabinetry – A natural ChoiceKnowing a little about the different natural wood species cabinetry is typically made from is key to its appreciation. This informational guide offers a little insight on the natural characteristics of the species most often used by OCE for cabinetry.

Only the highest quality materials are used in our cabinetry, however, differences in natural color and grain is a part of the beauty and nature of wood. It also explains why there may be variations between cabinets and within a single door or drawer front.

While every effort is made to match wood grain as closely as possible, no two pieces are the same – even from the same tree. Understanding these variations will give you an even greater appreciation for the beauty of our wood cabinetry. So enjoy the character of your beautiful cabinets for the unique, natural products they are. With proper care, they will age beautifully for years to come.

discover Our QualityEach day OCE craftsmen diligently and painstakingly hand-craft fine cabinetry for use by Oregon’s contractors and public agencies. OCE’s experienced craftspeople use only the finest materials, and

combine old-style woodworking skills with advanced technology. The result is high quality cabinetry with an impressive range of styles, finishes, colors, and woods.

discover Our finishYour OCE cabinetry is meticulously finished with the same care we give our furniture products. Each of our multi-step finishes is designed to highlight the beauty of the wood and protect it for lifetime durability. The following time-tested quality furniture finishing techniques are used to create the smoothest, richest patina possible.

• White Wood Sanding. After machine sanding, each part is individually hand sanded on a bench one at a time. This process allows us to take the time necessary to achieve a true custom quality finish. All crossgrain marks are removed and a rich smooth finish is achieved.

• Staining. Uniform color in the wood is achieved with toning and spray staining applications.

• Sealer Application. Each part is individually sprayed with a heavy coat of our specially formulated sealer. This hand spraying process allows us to apply extra sealer on open end grains to ensure proper coverage.

• Sealer Sanding. After sealing, the parts are placed on our sealer sanding bench. Here each part is individually sanded until we have achieved a silky smooth texture.

• Application of Top Coat. Finally, we apply a final top coat of lacquer with ultraviolet screen inhibitor to provide maximum resistance to scuffing, dents, moisture, UV fade and most household chemicals.
