W elcome back, the commercial year is well underway and many things bode well for 2015. The Chinese calendar has 2015 labeled the year of the Sheep.
Now that everyone is back at work we can take time to review the numbers for 2014 and make a comparison against 2013.
In 2014 Aerial’s fleet numbers were 288 cars, down from a high in 2013 of 307 cars. The media have confirmed that the ACT Government has 50 taxi plates returned, sitting on the shelf unused. Interestingly Aerial’s radio booking work has grown in 2014. There has been a decline in the number of hail jobs but cumulatively (total bookings) Aerial’s work in terms of jobs is up for 2014 compared to 2013.
The Canberra market has shifted because of Federal political uncertainty and the austerity associated with budget cuts. But the taxi industry is weathering this storm quite well. Our job numbers are up in 2014 but only by one quarter of one percent. Our taxi work is holding where many others are reporting large drops.
Taxi work in Canberra has shown a noticeable growth trend since August 2014. Our hardest months in 2014 were January to July. We have a noticeable decline in customer complaints and growth in our local booking market. I believe interesting times are ahead and we can continue this growth by supporting the work currently underway to improve our levels of customer service and make our innovations in technology deliver more.
A system wide upgrade of mapping technology is scheduled in March. This will require a car software upgrade. The mapping technology will add all new suburbs and streets for the ACT to our cars and call center.
Suburban growth in Canberra presents challenges for mapping software providers particularly where place names (business names etc.) change frequently. Along with the new mapping technology Aerial is upgrading call center software to automatically add place name change information into the map displays. This specialist Canberra information is a local refinement that will improve our services by offering more accurate details for customers and drivers. Local innovation based on local knowledge.
The innovation debate typically focuses on big players supported by large marketing budgets. When the marketing dollars stop - does the Emperor have any clothes? Aerial’s view is that the best innovation is ongoing and incremental as this can achieve more where smaller changes are made simply, with minimal impact on users and customers.
A specific example - Smartphone booking apps are used by all major taxi networks in Australia. This is not innovation its old technology. Innovation is integrating smartphone apps into other telephony services whilst maintaining security and privacy without the need for the customer to create a smartphone registration. A unique feature in testing now in Canberra.
Australia was built on the sheep’s back through innovation. Innovation is not something lacking in local businesses, and certainly not the preserve of the global giants.

via email. If the taxi has failed inspection, immediate steps must be taken to rectify any fault rather than leaving it to the last minute. Whilst many operators are doing a great job at rectifying problems in a timely manner, others are failing to act early which often results in the taxi being poorly repaired or presented at re-inspection without the necessary repairs being completed.
As Fleet Manager I am always looking to work with operators to obtain a high standard of vehicle presentation. However I wish to remind you of Aerial’s policy that any taxi not repaired to a professional standard within the given timeframe will be automatically suspended until the repairs have been completed. Waiting for parts to arrive is not an acceptable excuse if the parts were only ordered a few days before the re-inspection date.
Should operators experience difficulties receiving parts or finding a panel beater to repair their taxi they will need to notify Aerial ahead of the taxis re-inspection date. Below are some tips for passing Fleet Inspection:
• Present a CLEAN taxi• Taxi has Child Harness and First Aid Kit• Taxi sticker on your Taxis dome light is in good condition• No body damage, torn or stained upholstery • No tape on the taxi under ANY circumstances

H appy New Year to everyone in the Taxi Industry. We hope you and your families had a chance to relax over the Christmas/New Year period. 2015 has already delivered some firsts with Canberra hosting matches of the Asian Cup for the first time and Canberra hosting the final of the Big Bash League at Manuka Oval for the first time.
We hope events like these have helped the shift takings for drivers and operators in what is generally a slow month for Taxis in Canberra. Certainly Aerial commissionaires operating the Taxi rank at Canberra Stadium reported a steady number of passengers hiring Taxis from the rank during Asian Cup matches held in Canberra.
In 2015 we will be looking to reward drivers for their great customer service through our driver awards program. We will be rewarding drivers for putting the customer’s needs first and delivering the networks key customer service principles. One of these principles is not refusing customers due to the distance or direction in which they wish to travel. If you are available for hire it is illegal to refuse a hiring and Aerial will continue to investigate any complaint of this nature.
We must encourage customers to catch taxis at all times and give the same high standard of customer service to all passengers. All customers contribute to the financial viability of driver and operators alike and should be valued equally.
Moving on to some news related to Fleet Inspections. Throughout the final two months of 2014 and already in 2015 we have been having issues with taxi operators not undertaking repairs within the time given by the network at Fleet Inspections.

BUNDA STREET IS STILL HAVING ISSUES WITH TAXI SPEED IN THE SHARED ZONE.
This is a high pedestrian traffic area and it is imperative for public saftey that all drivers abide by speed limits and drive according to the conditions.
PARKING OF PRIVATE CARS ON RANKS CONTINUES TO BE AN ISSUE, particulary in areas of limited parking such as the Casino. This matter has been raised to the ACT Government and it is hoped we will see an improvement of this issue in the future.
RANK PLACEMENTS ARE IMPORTANT TO ENSURING PUBLIC TRANSPORT AVAILABILITY as Canberra continues to grow. New and upcoming trendy hubs are rapidly appearing, such as the Forshore, Londsdale St, New Acton Precinct and the Westside Pop-Up Village. A new Kingston Forshore Rank has been proposed by the CTIA and is awaiting consideration.

erial is proud to announce that it has now partnered with the Sydney Taxi School to deliver training to new taxi drivers and training is expected to recommence within the next week or so once approval has been received from the Office of Regulatory Services to proceed.
With a backlog of 51 students waiting to commence it will be a busy time for the training school. Thanks to all those students who have been patiently waiting.
The previous two day course will now extend to the morning of a third day due to some changes that will put more emphasis on formative assessments (ongoing practical assessments) and the practical driving assessment will include additional elements that will require trainee drivers to demonstrate competence across a range of practical taxi driver activities. The jockeying process has also been enhanced to ensure trainee drivers get the most out of their training experience in the taxi.
In addition, Aerial is in the process of acquiring a dedicated car fitted out with taxi equipment and livery promoting the Aerial taxi school which will be used for the students practical assessments. Once trainees have successfully completed their assessment tasks, they will be given a PIN to drive on Aerial’s network.

taxi licence. However, the surrender of government owned taxi licences during 2013 and early 2014 saw the number of daily trips per taxi improve, whilst the level of service delivery remained at extremely high levels, and no demands for the release of extra licences became apparent.
During 2014, about eighty taxi vehicles; the vast majority being hybrids were replaced in Canberra, and the price of LPG began to drop, a drop continuing in 2015. On top of this, the number of external complaints made about the local taxi service dropped 2.4% from 2013 to 2014, a trend that has been noticed for five years; and the introduction of paid parking in the parliamentary triangle has prised some commuters from their cars and raised bus patronage, a good sign for taxi drivers.
So the appearance of the taxi fleet has greatly improved, job statistics indicate that takings have improved slightly, fuel costs have been contained for the time being, the complaint level is in steady decline and service delivery is at a high level. This could indicate that those in the taxi industry are poised to share a brighter time in the near future, but as nothing stands still in the commercial world, the realities of the Canberra business outlook form a shadow over the taxi industry.Also the threat of so-called rideshare services such as UberX is something that must be met head on by the taxi industry or any improvements gained so far will be quickly lost.To think that looking good, having sufficient taxis in the fleet to facilitate good service delivery, expecting airport work to increase when the government relaxes its constraints, experiencing no pressure for extra taxi licences and performing well for the customers it now serves, means that business will “come good” is not wise.
The industry has been left with the rump of its former market and is too vulnerable to factors that affect that rump. The industry needs to be aware of some of the factors that caused a drop in patronage. The groups lost include the shopping mums with strollers and kids, the elderly ladies, the groups of office girls, and the single migrant tradesmen. Nearly all of them now drive their own cars. They have abandoned all forms of public transport. Many think taxi fares are too high, although it can be easily argued that taxi fares are relatively cheaper than they were fifty years ago.
The CTIA and the taxi industry need to fight on three fronts: perform and match the technology of rideshare companies such as UberX; to support improvements that attract people to use mass public transport (a slow process); and to support moves that bring more visitors to Canberra.
ears that end in the number zero or five are often years in which a review is conducted into the current state of an enterprise compared to the state it was in five or ten years ago and the state the participants would like to see it in five or ten years hence.
For an industry such as the taxi industry and many others, a ten-year projection would seem to be a waste of planning time. The speed of change in so many aspects of the taxi industry makes even a five-year projection look ambitious. But for the taxi industry, disregarding the great technological advances, it might be a time to review many years more than ten, especially regarding the decline of its market.
To say the past five years have been very difficult for the taxi industry in Canberra is not a news flash for anybody, and any person who says he/she has a grand master plan, which will positively lift the industry in the next five years, could be said to be somewhat delusional. Technological changes have been so rapid in the past few years that it is hard to predict where they will take the industry in even one or two years, let alone five. Technological changes will affect the market in which we work now, and may help the industry to have and to hold; or cause it to lose parts of its current market. It seems to me that the industry has concentrated on holding its market by better dispatch methods and payment facilities; and that population growth has masked the changing nature of the market and the disappearance of some sectors.
The five years 2009 to 2013 were probably the most difficult years experienced by Canberra’s taxi industry. The release of an excessive number of taxi licences, a costly review that so far has produced no discernable benefits (except maybe for WATs passengers), a continuing downturn in arrivals at the Canberra airport, and a continuing rise in the price of LPG combined to make things difficult for both taxi operators and drivers [since then, the threat to public service jobs and the continuing poor outlook for the ACT economy have weighed heavily on the outlook for many Canberra businesses].

A news item in the Canberra Times on the 18th January, informed readers that for the fourth year in succession, arrivals at the Canberra Airport have dropped, resulting in a 14% drop since 2010.An article on the previous day, 17th January, announced the resignation of Ms. Chris Faulks, CEO of the Canberra Business Chamber.Ms. Faulks, more familiar with the commercial needs of Canberra than most, commented that for the business outlook in Canberra to improve, the city needed international flights into the city, a very fast train servicing Sydney and Melbourne and a new convention centre.
It seems that a delay in the provision of a new convention centre will subdue demand for airport services both national and international, and for a very fast train. The taxi industry could use more work from the Canberra Airport and the CTIA will support any demands for a new convention centre. Unfortunately, planning for a new convention centre is being held back by the need to fund the Gungahlin to Civic light rail initiative, something that could contribute to a boost in taxi work, both immediately it begins operating and then after higher density living along the route is established. The stated Government plan is to extend the light rail to all parts of Canberra, but benefits for public transport will be long term. Parking shortages and higher parking fees might encourage some into public transport in the shorter term.Whether the light rail proposal is realised or not, a lively debate for the improvement of mass public transport is well under way and the CTIA will involve itself in that debate.
The taxi industry is not the only one dependent on the improvements promoted by Ms. Faulks. The well being of the airport, the accommodation industry, the tourism industry, the coffee shops, the conference industry and others rely on the provision of adequate infrastructure.
In summary, the Canberra taxi industry (with others) is virtually in a holding position at the moment, will stay there for the medium term and needs to be prepared to vigorously compete to hold and improve that position, whilst at the same time support plans that draw more visitors to Canberra and more passengers to mass public transport. Provided any future release of taxi licences in Canberra is truly linked to identifiable criteria, and any “rideshare” threat is successfully countered, the short-term future of the Canberra taxi industry should be positive.
Although it is most important to provide the best possible
service to existing clients through technology and presentation, the Canberra taxi industry needs to appreciate that “hanging on” is not enough.
The taxi industry as a united whole needs to support any move that will bring more people to Canberra and any move that will encourage drivers to leave the cars at home and use efficient public transport. Taxis must be part of that system. That is not part of a five-year or ten-year plan. It needs to be background thinking behind every plan.
Interesting times are always ahead.

What brought you here to Canberra?
I am from Punjab and moved to Canberra in 2009. I was in Melbourne mid 2009 where I spent three months working at a carwash.
A Few friends at the time were already in Canberra and they told me that Canberra is comparable to Punjab with the population and weather. The capital in Punjab has a good mix of people from different backgrounds and walks of life. I really like Canberra, it is a place with educated people, and many whom I have had an encounter with have made me feel very at easy by being very welcoming and accepting of any differences.
Tell us how you started driving taxis.
I was working for the Australian Post and prior to that, I was a carer. I I discovered a passion for driving to different places while I was working for the Australian Post, so it was not long before I start driving taxis from Monday to Thursdays. Earlier this year, I started operating the same taxi I used to drive, mainly for the reputation that I have gained driving that same taxi. I took the opportunity to operate it because the time was right.
What do you love about your job?
I love it because I don’t consider this a job, I see it as my own business. It involves higher risk than an ordinary job. It has other positives too. I am comfortable with the work environment and I get to
explore different places. I get to meet different people , which is also something I love about my job. Moreover, I love it because I love this country. People come from different countries and continents to build Australia to make it what it is today. It is such a lovely country, and people here have worked hard. If I get an elderly customer, I always thank them for all the hard work they’ve put in to make it such a great place for all of us.
What is your advice to new drivers?
It would be a much better environment to work in if all taxi drivers follow appropriate procedures and never steal others’ jobs. If at any point that a driver has picked up someone else’s customer by accident, please remember to tell the base. It is frustrating for the driver losing the job, so it would be more efficient if the base were informed, to avoid wasting time.
What is your future plans?
Sometime down the track, I would like to do a course that would aid my business. I am overwhelmed with options and there’s just so much to learn. However, I would explore my options within the business management field, so I could operate more taxis in the future and manage them well.

The Canberra Elite ‘Grab a Cab’ car in SydneyCanberra Elite’s ‘Grab a Cab’ wrapped taxi has made the journey to Sydney on the 4th February in support of the ‘Grab a Cab!’ campaign and the NSW launch. This campaign is an initiative of the Australian Taxi Industry Association to raise awareness within the community of the importance of only using regulated, licenced taxis.
Taxi organisations are subject to corporate governance and strict government regulations on safety, not least of which includes the requirement for background checks on drivers, GPS tracking and security cameras in every vehicle. The use of unregulated rideshare apps, not subject to the same regulations, is putting passenger and drivers at risk.
Aerial Capital Group together with Canberra Elite and Silver Service Canberra Taxis, strongly supports the Grab a Cab initiative.

Enlighten Night Noodle Markets are coming to Canberra for 2015That’s right Canberra! Start honing your chopstick techniques, Enlighten Night Noodle Markets are coming to Canberra for the first time in March 2015.
To coincide with Canberra’s annual Enlighten festival, the Night Noodle Markets will be held over 10 nights from February 27 to March 8 near Old Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin.
This month long celebration, part of Australia’s largest food festival, will showcase the best Canberra Restaurants, cafes, bars and producers with a series of venue based events, such as Let’s Do Lunch, Hat’s Off Dinners, Drink and Dine & Bespoke events

See Canberra in a different light this Autumn when many of the city’s national attractions open their doors after-hours to host an array of exclusive events.
