Not sure who to thank for this, but I loved it. If you start with a cage containing five monkeys and inside the cage, hang a ba-nana on a string from the top and then you place a set of stairs under the banana, before long a monkey will go to the stairs and climb toward the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, you spray all the other monkeys with cold wa-ter. After a while another monkey makes an attempt with same result... all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other mon-keys will try to prevent it because they do not want to get sprayed with cold water. Now, put the cold water away. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the bana-na and attempts to climb the stairs. To his shock, all of the other monkeys beat him up to stop him so they don't get sprayed with cold water. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be assaulted. Next, remove another of the original five monkeys, replacing it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment...... with enthusi-asm, because he is now part of the "team". Then, replace a third original monkey with a new one, followed by the fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs he is at-tacked. Now, the monkeys that are beating him up have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs. Neither do they know why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey. Final-ly, having replaced all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys will have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, not one of the monkeys will try to climb the stairway for the banana. Why, you ask? Because in their minds...that is the way it has always been! This, my friends, is how Congress operates... and this is why, from time to time, “All of the monkeys need to be

replaced at the same time. We can showcase ourselves using fan pages or groups, please make sure you visit and join our chapter sites and leave com-ments and stay currents on what’s going on in our GWRRA

Beth and I have been in Tucson for most of the month of September. We caravanned out so we could have the bike to ride, solo AND with 1 of the 4 GWRRA chapters here….. 2 in Tucson, 1 in Green Valley, and 1 in Sierra Vista. It's interesting when I think about the fact that the San Fernando Valley has a population of just under 1.8 million and we have 1 chapter, and a Tucson area popula-tion that has 4 chapters for just under a million folks! Anyway we attended the AZ-A meeting. There were about 50 folks in attendance, from all 4 chapters. Chapter A is known as The Pioneers. Why? This was the 1st chapter in GWRRA!! Yes, they meet at Golden Corral, a buffet eatery similar to Hometown Buffet (but better). They were all dressed up for their 35th Anniversary photo to be taken right after the meeting.

Then the next day they were riding to Tombstone AZ. So, there we were, "saddled up," at 7am the next morn-ing meeting south of town at Wilmot and the 10 for the ride south on the Sonoita Mountain View Highway (83) to the 82 southeast to the 80 into Tombstone. This 82 mile trip, over these very green Arizona hills took slightly over 2 hours. This was the tail end of the Sonoran De-sert monsoons. I, and my fellow riders, hadn't seen this much green in them there hills in a very long time! Arriv-ing in Tombstone, we grabbed a bite at the Longhorn Restaurant, and wandered through Big Nose Kate's Sa-loon, the Birdcage Theater, as well as other tourist stops along Allen Street.

The infamous OK Corral was down the road and it offered it's usual shootout between the Earp Brothers, the Clantons and the McLaury's. Finally, on the way out of town we stopped at Boot Hill Cemetery, where as you'll see in the enclosed photos Beth and I recreated a photo we took in 1973.

I guess there's a bit of a difference be-tween the 2 pics, a mere 39 years! Mentioning that fact to the gal behind the counter, she produced photo proof that it was indeed "mere!" Roberta Wilson of Gardnerville, NV had taken a pic in 1939 as an infant, and went back 66 years later for the recreation!! Wow! Let's see, if we tried to beat that...I'd be a "mere" 89 years young!! NO PROBLEM!! (continued)

The ride down to Tombstone was with these folks taken at Big Nose Kate's Saloon. All were wonderful and particular-ly we enjoyed riding with Dave and Dee Gormley, Region F Educators.

Another highlight of the Tucson visit was seeing the Space Shuttle, Endeavor, fly over, piggy backed to a 747. At the request of shuttle commander Mark Kelly, for his wife Gabby Giffords, a big supporter of the space program when she was in Congress, the flight took a flight path over the U of A en-

route from White Sands NM to Edwards AFB toward its final destination in LA to be put into The Sci-ence Center from Florida. It drew a huge crowd and a web based local newsletter quoted me in the next day's publication. I'd seen a space shuttle flying in Paris at the '83 air show, the Enterprise pig-gy backed onto it's 747, a launch at the cape in Florida, from right over the water, and a landing at Edwards a couple of years ago. Later in the trip I enjoyed the Pima Air & Space Museum, huge compared to the last time I was there in '76. Enclosed find a nice shot of a B-36...count 'em, 10 engines!! 2 jets and 3 props on each wing, the latest acquisition to the museum is hoping some day for an indoor home.

Finally, I'll leave you with a few nice pics of flora and fauna around Tucson, in-cluding my friends, a Western Diamondback rattler, a garden spider, and a Horse Lubber grasshopper.

I recently came across an article written by Jackie Vaughn for “Wheels in Motion” that nicely explains my feelings about the rider—motorcycle in-terface. I hope you enjoy it too.

“Everything in life has limits. When we were young, we had bedtimes that were far too early, espe-cially on a summer night, or when something good was on TV. As we got older, curfews and the frustrations of limited spending money chafed us. We were pretty much controlled by how often & how long we could borrow the car. Still, we stretched and broke limits with only minor repercussions. As riders we have limits too, and these, unlike legal limits such as speed and right-of-way, can only be stretched so far before the consequences become very dire indeed. These limits are our person-al limits, the limits of our machines, and the limits of our environment. To ride safely, we must know these limits and ride within them. This would be a fairly easy task if the limits were fixed & separate. However, they are each highly variable and intertwined so that one can affect the others. Personal limits change constantly. There are the slow, but perceptible signs of aging when we finally don glasses that eventually give way to bifocals and when hearing dims. As we reach the over-the-hill age of 40, night vision begins to lessen. With any luck, skill & experience provide compensation. Not even the young among us are immune to personal limits. We are all susceptible. These limits can be imposed by physical conditions such as fatigue, emotion, or by medications, both over-the counter and prescription. New prescriptions can have unexpected side effects, & drug interactions can produce terrifying reactions. Medications should be carefully discussed with doctor and pharma-cist before we ride. Getting all prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy lessens the chance of a conflict or overdose not being spotted. Recreational drugs create dangers that should be obvious. Over-the-counter drugs frequently pose problems. Almost every label on allergy medications carries the warning, “May cause drowsiness. Do not operate heavy machinery while taking this medication.” By heavy machinery they don’t mean bulldozers or tanks. They mean cars & trucks and motorcycles & riding lawnmowers & anything else where a drowsy, dizzy or uncoordinated operator could have an accident. Almost every skill needed to safely operate a motorcycle is affected by such medicines. Even when we’re at our physical best, our motorcycles pose limits. Obvious ones are type & power. A fully loaded touring bike is not made to ride over sand dunes at the beach, nor is a two-up 125-cc bike safe on the interstate. Even the best-maintained bike is subject to routine wear & tear. New tires are slick until the mold release wears off. Cheap tires can offer poor traction under even opti-mum conditions. Brake pads wear. A poorly cared for bike is two-wheeled disaster. Even when our bikes & we are in tip-top condition, the environment can sharply define our limits. A twisty back road is a joy on a warm sunshiny day. The same road on a cold, wet night is a rider’s nightmare. Cold can dull our reflexes & slow our reaction times. Numbed hands operate controls more slowly & with less feedback, making full-braking stops less effective. Nature can brush a road with sand or mist it with rain or fog. Our only choice is to slow down and to avoid any sudden changes in speed or di-rection. We should never be so dumb that we don’t realize it is time to get off the road.”

District Director Review

Bill & Rene Johnson

Page 6 CA-1K KOALA NEWS

October brings some unique observations that you may not be aware of. Things like; Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, American Pharmacist Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Clergy Appreciation Month, Computer Learning Month, Cookie Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Eat Country Ham Month, International Drum Month, Lupus Awareness Month, National Diabetes Month, National Pizza Month, National Vegetarian Month, National Popcorn Popping Month, and Sar-castic Month.

So lets get on with the more important things in life and eat some Country Ham, a few cookies, and lots of pizza. There are other important things happening in October, things like CA-1F’s “Halloween Fun Run” in San Diego on October 20th, and Arizona’s District Convention in Yuma on October 26 – 28. But enough about October, this article is titled “The DD Review” so lets take a look back on 2012. We are finishing a very busy year, which included 15 Chapter Rally’s, a Region Convention in St. George, UT, and our California District Convention in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Each event was unique in its own way, and gave us the opportunity to meet new people and renew old friendships along the way. How about that California District Convention? I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Talk about a lot of work, but we really love being treated like royalty as they did at the Village Lodge. The City rolled out the Red Carpet this year as demonstrated by the “Motorcycle Safety Week” proclamation presented during the Opening Ceremonies by Mayor Mathew Lehmen. The Opening Ceremonies begun with the presentation of the American Flag by the combined Police & Fire Department Honor Guard. They are truly amazing to watch. We also enjoyed a special guest speaker best known as “The Bear Whisperer” – Steve Searles. He provided great some insight as to what to expect in the area while we were there, and he was right on target. There were several bear sightings throughout town including one in the underground parking area around 3:00 AM. I think “Big Goldie” was looking for some cookies to go with the Coffee he got from J.R. Alkire’s bike last year. Just kidding, there was no reported damage to any bike, but several members were able to watch a young cub romp through the pool area just before leaving for home early Monday morning.

Page 7 CA-1K KOALA NEWS

On a serious note, Steve Searles did acknowledge how touched he was to see a group like ours hon-or the troops as we do, and was particularly moved with our special acknowledgement of those that have recently passed to include their former Mayor – Skip Harvey. I guess they don’t get a lot of patri-otic events up in Mammoth, so our tribute was very special to them. While I am thanking those that attended, I would like to send out a special thank you to Anita Alkire (Region F Director) and several of her Region Team for attending and helping judge our “Tribute to Our Western Hero’s” event. That turned out to be a lot more work than expected, but a lot of fun too. I still have visions of Tim McShane (CD – CA-1D) riding his imaginary pony back and forth in front of the stage, and Mike Burke’s (CA-2N) “Special Cowboy” walk. My personal favorite was our very own Julia Kunter as “Miss Kitty”, I think she nailed the costume. Be sure to ask her how she got that nick-name sometime. Looking forward, we are in the process of finalizing our new chapter in the north. Redding, CA is quickly becoming a reality, and hopefully all the paperwork will be complete before the end of the month. They have chosen the call letters CA-2R to reflect the city central to their area “Redding”. They have already hosted a couple Chapter Gatherings, and have had great turnouts. They will be meeting on the 2nd Sunday of each month so mark your calendar and plan a visit. Under the leader-ship of Dave Wilson (CD) and Jerry Standridge (ACD), I’m sure they will grow into a great chapter. Once things get settled, I’ll announce their Open House event and invite everyone to come up and show them some of that good old California love to help get them kicked off in the right direction. Until next time, “Hang on – we’re going for a ride”. Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA California District Directors

A police officer pulled over two nuns riding on a motorcycle, and said to the rider, 'Ma'am, you're driving much too slowly, could you please drive faster?" And the nun says, 'Oh, I saw the sign with the "21" and assumed the speed limit was 21 km/h" The officer explains: 'No ma'am, the speed limit is 80. The highway number is Interstate 21." Then the police officer look at the passenger and see the other nun shaking like a leaf. "Excuse me sister, but what's wrong with your passenger?" "Oh, that's probably because we just got off Highway 205."

Chapter Meetings for Northern California

How Would You Control A Nosebleed?

Nosebleeds can occur when the small blood vessels in the nose are rup-tured. Most nosebleeds are not serious and can easily be handled.

Have the person sit up straight with their head tilted forehead, chin down. Pinch the nose with your thumb and index finger and hold it for 10 min.

Do not tilt the head back or have the person lie down. These actions may cause them to swallow blood or vomit. Have the person spit out any blood that collects in their mouth.

Seek immediate medical attention if you cannot stop the bleeding.

What is GWRRA Chapter CA-1K?

We are a family oriented motorcycle organization sponsored by the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA). Although most of our motorcycles are Gold Wings, we welcome all makes and models - two or three wheeled.

Our Chapter area covers the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita, and adjoining cities, a large portion of Simi Valley, Burbank, Glendale, and portions of Los Ange-les / West Los Angeles. As GWRRA members, we are committed to the enjoyment of motorcycling, motorcycling safety, memorable rides throughout California and our beautiful country.

Committed, happy, and involved members and their families is the cornerstone of our existence. We recently created a photo album on the website for member's to post pictures of their motorcycles, travels, and memorable events. We encourage you to take a look at them.

Staying busy, traveling often is commonplace for members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Chapter CA-1K. Stay in touch via our facebook page at GWRRA Chapter CA-1K.
