of God our Saviour toward man appeared: not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour: that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life: in Christ Jesus our Lord.

departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service, and to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. The Minister may continue with the Exhortation, as follows, or he may proceed instead to the Sursum Corda.

The Exhortation

Ye who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

The General Confession ¶The People kneel and pray together.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution ¶The Minister stands

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm

and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Comfortable Words

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all who truly turn to him.

Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. St. Matt. xi. 28.    So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. St. John iii. 16.    Hear also what Saint Paul saith.    This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim. i. 15.    Hear also what Saint John saith.    If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the Propitiation for our sins. 1 St. John ii. 1, 2.

And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that we, and all others who shall be partakers V of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious + Body and + Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be + filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. LAST GOSPEL ¶The People stand.

Minister: The Lord be with you.People : And with thy spirit.Minister: The beginning of the Holy Gospel according to

St. John. St. John I, 1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was

with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

People: Thanks be to God.

Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.' So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'Out of Egypt I called my son.' When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning,Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more." St. Matthew 2:13-18

I have chosen a passage of scripture that completes an Old Testament prophecy in a New Testament narrative, although it is not normally an element in any Lessons and Carols service. It is traditionally an Epiphany narrative. However, I believe this year, reflecting on the recent tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut, it is an extremely appropriate "Christmas" story.

Twenty innocent children ages five to seven were violently slaughtered, and six heroic women died with them trying to keep them out of harm’s way. There are toy’s that will remain unopened this Christmas day or be placed in the grave with a loved one. With less than two weeks to Christmas, this unimaginable and senseless attack on the least able to defend themselves, has turned the joy and happiness in the glowing faces of the children into a somber and unimaginable grief in the sad faces of parents, grandparents, husbands,

siblings and children. Our nation is in a season of national mourning, and everyone has been touched by the gravity of suffering and grief being experienced in this small New England town. Sadly, we are not shocked nearly as much as we might have been in earlier years. The seemingly logical response of the community is to take down the "holiday" decorations and cancel all holiday parties and other activities.

Our President spoke emotionally about the sad fact that these children would never experience a chance at life; they would never have an opportunity to have children and find loving spouses, etc. Indeed, it is a great tragedy, as is the tens of thousands of children violently killed in the wombs of their mothers. And yet, there is not the sense of national grief over these thousands of innocents, who will never "have a chance at life." Perhaps they are a matter of "out of sight, out of mind."

As the narrative tells us, untold babies were murdered by Herod in a failed attempt to hold onto his power. Their blood cried out to heaven, and God the Father grieved mightily. And yet the infant Jesus lived to die a violent death on a crude cross, taking upon himself all the violence and death the Evil One could muster, and, in so doing, redeemed the whole world, offering eternal life to all who would call upon his Name.

Even so, the Evil One continues his destructive mischief. We saw his face in Colorado, in Arizona, in Virginia, and in so many other places where senseless violence has resulted in the death of large numbers of people and usually a suicide. In looking for answers, we must begin with the realization that evil does exist and that we are in a cosmic battle for the kingdom of God and his perfect goodness.

Some Christmas word! I can imagine your thoughts as to why I have chosen to approach Christmas from such a somber perspective. I hope to remind us that the world into which the Son of God was born was one of darkness, in which thousands of innocent infants were slaughtered by a deranged

politician. Ultimately, however, they died at the hand of the Evil One, as did these Connecticut innocents. "Holiday Trees" (another device of the Evil One) will never bring the comfort and healing that Christmas trees bring because holiday trees have little or nothing to do with the birth of God's only Son into a dark world as the Savior of mankind.

The families who have lost loved ones in this evil tragedy may not find comfort, initially, in the fact that all of those innocents are now in the bosom of our God, held close to his heart, having been escorted to that safest of all places in the Universe by his holy angels. Our Father in Heaven did not take them from us. He received them back unto himself, healed them and made them whole again.

The faithful among those families will someday be reunited with their child or parent when our Father in heaven conquers evil, casts the Evil One into outer darkness, and establishes his eternal kingdom upon the earth. This is the message of Christmas, as the hymn says, "Earth hath no sorrow that heaven cannot heal" and as another well-known carol says "the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight."

Let us also remember that as at this time

“ . . . is born a Saviour of a pure virgin bright to free all those who trust in him from Satan’s power and might.”

May our Lord’s Blessing rest upon you this Christmas and in the coming New Year.

_____________________________________________________________________________________RECTOR’S CHRISTMAS LETTER

“And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the Only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” [John 1: 14.] This Christmas we again celebrate the coming to us at Bethlehem [in the humble guise of an infant child born in a stable with a manger for his crib] of the offspring of a travelling carpenter and his wife, both of seemingly no importance.

We know that this child is the creator of all things that have been made and is the Divine co-equal with God the Father from the beginning before all time. And yet, He left his Divine position in Heaven, took human flesh by the Holy Spirit in the womb of a young virgin, and was born in impoverished circumstances of a mother of low estate in a town, then and even now, in and of itself, of little or no earthly importance.

He chose these circumstances of His birth to convey to each of us that He and His birth and His life portray that most elemental quality of character in an earthly progression toward an eternal life. That quality is humility, which proceeds from the greatest of the theological virtues, which we know as charity, frequently referred to as the gift of love.

You and I also are born of love; of God the Father through His only-begotten Son, by the Holy Spirit. We are created by God who, himself, is Love, as related to us by St. John. That Love is ever creating, expanding, and sharing. Consequently, we are created by God to share in His Love and to communicate it to all creation and also to Him our Creator.

Clothing Himself with the “garment” of humility, Christ offers us the manner through which we can acquire both understanding of His commandments and teachings and

obedience to them. This enables us avoid or recover from sin through His mercifuly forgiveness and rest in His guidance.

And thus each of us may then discover, as did St. Augustine, “ . . . that our heart is restless until it rests God.” [ cf. Confesions, I, I, 1. See, Magnificat Magazine, Dec. 1012, Vol. 14, No. 10, at p. 257.] And resting in God, we can say with the Apostle John, who said of Him (who called himself the Son of Man and was the Son of God), “Which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes . . . and touched with our hands.” [1 Jn 1: 1] And we will know that we have seen His Glory in His Church with fullness of Grace and Truth.

With thankfulness to our Savior, and to you for your prayers and kindness to me and my family, and for your love expressed to the clergy, to this congregation and to all our visitors, throughout this year past, may our Lord grant you a Blessed Christmas, and a Joyful New Year. May His example of humility empower our love for Him and for each other and for all whom we encounter at Saint Mary’s and in our daily walk. Merry Christmas. -- Fr.
