C4 | SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2012 | THE COURIER-JOURNAL SPORTS | courier-journal.com/sports MT last year they seemed to spend more time in the training room than on the field. Ravaged by injuries, U of L scrambled to finish 38-20 and reach the NCAA Tournament. Among the wounded were utility play- er Jordan Trimble (broken ankle), left-hander Tori Collins (stress fracture in her ribs) and Leonard. Now healthier, the Cardinals are having a historic season. “I don’t think anything is ever given to you,” Col- lins said. “You have to work for everything you get. Last season was a struggle. We persevered very well. This is the tightest of any team I’ve been on. We’re absolutely family. We can cry on each other’s shoul- ders. We love each other. That why we can play so well together.” Pearsall, who started the program in 2000, might have her best team ever. The Cards scored their big- gest victory of the season three weeks ago by beating No. 14 Michigan 2-1. Unlike last season, when injuries reduced them to a one- woman pitching staff at times, they have depth. Collins (13-0, 1.10 ERA) leads the team in victories and strikeouts (104). Leon- ard leads the Big East in lowest batting average al- lowed (.134). Caralisa Con- nell is 9-0 with a 1.49 ERA for a staff that is eighth in Division I in ERA (1.13). Pearsall has 10 players with at least one home run. The team entered this week 10 th nationally in bat- ting average (.341) and first in triples per game (0.41). Senior Kristin Aus- tin was second with six tri- ples, and her home run gave the Cardinals a 1-0 victory at Kentucky on Wednesday. Dominant as they have been, the Cards have nine come-from-behind wins. “You can go the first couple of weeks and not lose a game,” Pearsall said. “A lot of teams do that. We have confidence that even if we’re behind that some- how we’ll pull it out. We’ll find a way to get it done. We’ve been scrappy enough to make that hap- pen.” One player who defines scrappy is Leonard, who missed most of the previ- ous three seasons. She first was injured as a high school senior during a strength and agility drill. She returned for the state finals but reinjured her right knee as a U of L freshman on a pickoff play in an April game against Syracuse. Last season the team’s No. 2 starter hurt her left knee in the fourth game while covering a play at the plate in Texas. Through all that, Leon- ard never lost her opti- mism. “I knew one day I’d be able to get back on the field and help the team,” she said. “But it’s been a proc- ess mentally and physical- ly. I’m very grateful to be out there again.” Trimble said Leonard’s attitude had an effect on her. “She keeps us positive, period,” the Manual High School graduate said. “Through her injuries, she keeps coming back. She keeps us going. It’s great having her back.” U of L won its last Big East regular-season cham- pionship in 2006 and its last conference tournament in 2007. The Cardinals were picked fourth in the league’s preseason poll be- hind DePaul, Syracuse and Notre Dame. “If we keep pushing each other, the sky’s the limit,” Austin said. Michael Grant can be reached at (502) 582-4069. “We have confidence that even if we’re behind that somehow we’ll pull it out,” said Sandy Pearsall, the only coach U of L has had. “We’ll find a way to get it done.” SOFTBALL: Cardinals perfect so far Continued from Page C1 Sophomore Chelsea Leonard (6.0, 0.79 ERA) has ovecome three knee surgeries. last year they seemed tospend more time in thetraining room than on thefield.

Ravaged by injuries,U of L scrambled to finish38-20 and reach the NCAATournament. Among thewounded were utility play-er Jordan Trimble (brokenankle), left-hander ToriCollins (stress fracture inher ribs) and Leonard. Nowhealthier, the Cardinals arehaving a historic season.

“I don’t think anythingis ever given to you,” Col-lins said. “You have to workfor everything you get.Last season was a struggle. We persevered very well. This is the tightest of anyteam I’ve been on. We’reabsolutely family. We cancry on each other’s shoul-ders. We love each other. That why we can play sowell together.”

Pearsall, who startedthe program in 2000, mighthave her best team ever. The Cards scored their big-gest victory of the seasonthree weeks ago by beatingNo. 14 Michigan 2-1. Unlikelast season, when injuriesreduced them to a one-woman pitching staff attimes, they have depth.

Collins (13-0, 1.10 ERA)leads the team in victoriesand strikeouts (104). Leon-ard leads the Big East inlowest batting average al-lowed (.134). Caralisa Con-nell is 9-0 with a 1.49 ERAfor a staff that is eighth inDivision I in ERA (1.13).

Pearsall has 10 playerswith at least one home run.The team entered thisweek 10th nationally in bat-ting average (.341) andfirst in triples per game(0.41). Senior Kristin Aus-tin was second with six tri-

ples, and her home rungave the Cardinals a 1-0victory at Kentucky onWednesday.

Dominant as they havebeen, the Cards have ninecome-from-behind wins.

“You can go the firstcouple of weeks and notlose a game,” Pearsall said.“A lot of teams do that. Wehave confidence that evenif we’re behind that some-how we’ll pull it out. We’llfind a way to get it done. We’ve been scrappyenough to make that hap-pen.”

One player who definesscrappy is Leonard, whomissed most of the previ-ous three seasons.

She first was injured asa high school senior duringa strength and agility drill. She returned for the statefinals but reinjured herright knee as a U of Lfreshman on a pickoff playin an April game againstSyracuse. Last season theteam’s No. 2 starter hurther left knee in the fourthgame while covering a playat the plate in Texas.

Through all that, Leon-ard never lost her opti-mism.

“I knew one day I’d beable to get back on the fieldand help the team,” shesaid. “But it’s been a proc-ess mentally and physical-ly. I’m very grateful to beout there again.”

Trimble said Leonard’sattitude had an effect onher.

“She keeps us positive, period,” the Manual HighSchool graduate said.“Through her injuries, shekeeps coming back. Shekeeps us going. It’s greathaving her back.”

U of L won its last BigEast regular-season cham-pionship in 2006 and its lastconference tournament in2007. The Cardinals werepicked fourth in theleague’s preseason poll be-hind DePaul, Syracuse andNotre Dame.

“If we keep pushingeach other, the sky’s thelimit,” Austin said.

Michael Grant can bereached at (502) 582-4069.

“We have confidence that even if we’re behind that somehow we’ll pull it out,” saidSandy Pearsall, the only coach U of L has had. “We’ll find a way to get it done.”
