She has given 46 years of service to the Giles County Extension Of- fice, starting in 1967 as the Home Economics Secretary. Slaton has done a little bit of everything in the office. She’s performed the typing, answered tele- phones, kept financial records, greeted clients, prepared documents for exhibition, kept every- one in supplies and as- sisted agents with their programs. “Barbara has spent many hours assisting with the Giles County Fair, the county FCE Clubs, the county Cattleman’s As- sociation and many other groups and organizations,” said Kevin Rose, director of the Giles County office. “Barbara is trustworthy, dedicated, prompt and committed; and she is al- ways a team player.” Slaton has been recog- nized with several service awards, most recently a 40 year award. She has worked with adults and children as well. She served as the adult agriculture admin- istrative support assistant and she has worked with the 4-H program help- ing to develop programs and enroll students. Born in the Stella Com- munity, where she attend- ed the Stella Cumberland Presbyterian Church, she graduated from Minor Hill High School and she and husband Joel have two daughters Nita Laten and Jodi Gaines. Ready now for retirement, Slaton is look- ing forward to spending time with her five grand- children; Landon Journey, Hayden Journey, Sawyer Phillips, Elizabeth Gaines and Thomas Gaines. “Barbara is my sister and close friend,” commented brother Bob McGill. “I can always count on her. We were brought up with strong family values and traditions. She has a deep love for family, especially her grandchildren.” As a member and volun- teer at the Elks Lodge she has chaired the children’s Christmas program for the past 10 years and worked to collect and distribute food for underprivileged families during the holi- day season. She has volun- teered with the golf tour- nament to raise money for veterans, and the county wide Elks Hoop Shoot, done landscaping at the lodge itself and worked on many other projects. “I’m proud to have had the opportunity to know and work with Barbara for 26 of her 46 years,” continued Rose. “Her in- fluence within the Ex- tension Office and the community will be felt for many more years to come. We will certainly miss her but wish her well in her retirement.” Barbara Slaton has dedicated 46 years to Giles Countians as an employee of the county UT Extension Service. During her years of service she has worked closely with the Giles County Ag Committee, including committee members (from left): Roger Reedy, Slaton, Tracy Wilburn, Kristen Pfeiffer and Larry Dickey. Retiring soon, she is looking forward to spending more time with her family and grandchildren. Citizen Barbara Slaton has devoted herself to her community and family both personally and pro-fessionally. She has given 46 years of service to the Giles County Extension Of-fi ce, starting in 1967 as the Home Economics Secretary.
