As gas prices slowly rise, so does the number ofpeople using public transportation in the Twin Citiessuburbs.

The Suburban Transit Providers have reported anincrease in suburban bus and transportation rider-ship during the first six months of 2011, includingcommunities in the south metro.

The Suburban Transit providers service 12 com-munities: Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan,Rosemount and Savage via the Minnesota ValleyTransit Authority; Chaska, Chanhassen and EdenPrairie via SouthWest Transit; Prior Lake LakerLines and Shakopee Transit offer BlueXpress service;along with Maple Grove Transit and PlymouthMetrolink.

I-35E will be underrepair until early tomid-October

The Minnesota Department ofTransportation began resurfacing 5.25miles of I-35E between Lone Oak Roadand the Mississippi River Aug. 18. Theproject is expected to last six to sevenweeks.

MnDOT says traffic will be impact-ed by lane, ramp and loop closures andup to four weekend full-closures thatwill be needed to complete the projecton time. An average of 90,000 vehiclestravel this section of I-35 each day.

Both directions of I-35E will beresurfaced and repaired between LoneOak Road and Highway 5. Ramps andloops will also be resurfaced andrepaired to create a smoother drivingsurface and ensure greater road dura-bility.

Road crews will make improve-ments and repairs to the drainage sys-tems, guardrails, signal systems andother technology infrastructure whilethe lanes are closed.

Eagan resident Blake Westling knew hehad it in the bag. Well, almost. After a finalbag-off, the judges of the Aug. 13Minnesota Grocer’s Association BestBagger Competition announced Westlingas the winner.

“I was so excited,” said Westling, 20.“My parents said my eyes lit up and I wasoverwhelmed with joy.”

“He’s put hours and hours into practic-ing and to see him focus and to see himsucceed, we’re so proud of him,” said MikeWestling, Blake’s father.

Blake Westling, representing the EaganByerly’s Grocery Store, defeated 12 otherbaggers at the statewide competition at theMall of America, but had to nervouslyawait the results.

After the competition, the judges cryp-tically announced a final bag-off betweentwo of the competitors. The catch was, no

one, except the judges, knew what placethe bag-off was for. Westling was notamong the two that competed in the bag-off.

“I didn’t know where that left me and Ithought I had a good run,” he said.

After the bag-off, it was announced thatWestling was the winner.

Judges graded on four criteria: baggingspeed, weight distribution between thetwo bags that were filled, bagging tech-nique and style, attitude and appearance.

Competing at his second state tourna-ment in a row, Westling won $500, a trophyand, most importantly, the chance to com-pete for the National Grocer’sAssociation’s Best Bagger title Feb. 13 atthe Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.He will be the first Byerly’s representativeto compete in Las Vegas.

Westling traveled to Las Vegas as achild and is eager to return. But, don’texpect to see him sitting at a slot machineor black jack table. Remember, he’s 20years old.

Hoping time runs out on obnoxious and intrusive adsOver the past decade or

more I have slowly developeda rather strong aversion tobasically all forms of adver-tising, with the exception ofthose in the print media. Youmay think I’m just saying thisbecause it happens to be theindustry in which I work, butactually this is not true, forthey lack what most othersunfortunately possess.

About 10 or 15 years ago Istopped to fill my car with gasat a very popular station offof 494. As I was standingthere, doing nothing like mostothers, I was startled when Isuddenly began hearing aman’s voice. I had no ideawhere it was coming from.Imagine my surprise when Iturned and noticed that a verysmall monitor was locatedalong the top of the pump air-ing ads.

Now this was a time thatpreceded my aversion. Thisbegan to develop soon after, soI was not too terribly annoyedby this. In fact, part of me

even thought it was clever, butnot nearly as clever as the adboards ever so strategicallyplaced in men’s restroomsalmost everywhere.

Since then, as time passedand technology improved,these types of ads complement-ed the major sources – radio,TV and not the Internet – in anon-endearing way.

How many times have youhad to turn the volume on yourTV down during a commercialeither because the volumeincreased itself to catch yourattention or the content wasabsurd? How many times haveyou searched the radio dial inyour car to only hear multipleminutes of “Hey! Sale! Sale!”And nowadays, how much timedo you think you spend

attempting to close a pop-up adwhen visiting a website, only toaccidentally (or not perhaps) bedirected to a page trying to sellyou the next greatest elixir theworld has ever seen?

All of these forms possess anamazing ability to annoy youfor a host of reasons, thesealong with other sources of adsin seemingly clever locationsvia technology. It is reaching apoint where it seems they can-not be escaped, like somethingout of a “B” horror film.

These were my thoughtswhen up popped an ad on myGPS. To date, I believe I haveseen ads for a hotel chain, arestaurant and another. Noworries, though, as I’m sure itwill soon just happen to pop upwhen I am watching it for thenext turn I will need to make.This is not a good idea, espe-cially when you consider dis-tracted driving and the deathsit accounts for each and everyyear.

To those who are responsiblefor this annoyance, which is

similar to a mosquito buzzingin your ear, my English-accent-ed female navigator disap-proves.

And just everywhere youdrive these days in a metroarea, you are barraged withbillboards and blinking signsselling products, services, orideas. Okay, maybe you’re notbarraged, but there sure are alot of new forms for just aboutany business or other entity toflash their wares.

Hope is in sight, however. Astechnology has accounted forthe variety of annoyances, ittoo is the source through whichrelief can be found.

The DVR is very useful innot only eliminating commer-cials but also saving time whenshows are recorded and savedfor viewing at a later time. Andthe advent of Netflix, Hulu, andothers I’m sure, you can lead acommercial free life, which willprovide you the luxury ofbrowsing the print ads at yourconvenience and on yourterms.

It’s been a few monthssince my previous visit, butlast week I found myself driv-ing up to a church I’ve beenvery familiar with for years.From baptisms to confirma-tions to weddings — includingmy own — I’ve often beenback to that same church tocelebrate numerous joyfuland happy occasions withfamily and friends.

This was the first funeral.I cannot and will not claim

a close friendship with thedeparted. To do so would be adisservice to his memory. Atbest, I can say we were child-hood buddies.

It was difficult to find park-ing, and I ended up walking a

while to the church.Over the past decade, I’ve

been lucky enough to neverhave to go to one of thesefunerals. But I can say withabsolute certainty that, after10 years, the wars our countryis engaged in came home.

I can’t pretend the conflictsoverseas are just politicalmaneuvering anymore; warmeans heroism and it meanssacrifice.

I know this is the pointwhere I am supposed to makean argument for or againstthe use of military force inother countries. You, the read-ers, might expect me to usethis tragedy as an example ofwhatever “agenda” I mighthave. But, that’s just some-thing I’m not going to do.

This is a time to rememberthose who serve or who haveserved and honor them forthat reason alone. Forget thepolitics, forget pushing fordrawdowns or surges, andremember that those thingsmean people – people who arewilling to stand up and servetheir country regardless ofthe cost.

District 196 School BoardmemberKevin Sampers announced his resigna-tion from the board on at the end of theboard’s Aug. 15. Meeting. His resignationis effective Aug. 31.

After serving on the school board for 18years, Sampers said it was time for achange.

He resigned to devote more time to hisnew business, Naiku, an education soft-ware company that uses technology tohelp students and teachers create greaterengagement in the learning process.

Naiku, Laotian for “teacher.” wasfounded in November 2010, and Sampersrealized this summer it was becoming dif-ficult to juggle his board duties with hisgrowing business.

“I need to really prioritize my life dif-ferently and basically make sure that Imake the business successful,” Samperssaid.

First elected to the school board in 1993,Sampers’ history with the district goesback almost three decades prior.

In 1966, Sampers attended first grade atNorthview Elementary School in Eaganand was part of the second graduatingclass at Apple Valley High School in 1978,he said.

After college, he moved back to the dis-trict. He and his wife, Cynthia, saw theirthree daughters attend and later graduatefrom district schools.

“I kept a connection all the way alongfor 40-plus years,” Sampers said.

During his tenure on the board,Sampers said he was proud to have seenpositive growth within the district, butacknowledged tough decisions were madealong the way.

“I think over that time we built a greatculture for the district,” he said. “From

the top down in staff,everyone is trying to edu-cate our students to ourfull potential.”

“The biggest challengewith any board lately –you’re trying to do morewith less,” he continued.“I think our district hasdone a great job managingthe budget in toughtimes.”

School Board Vice Chairperson RobDuchscher said Sampers brought a wealthof business experience that he applied todistrict finances.

“Kevin always provided a calm, busi-ness-minded view of things,” Duchschersaid, who has served with Sampers formore than 11 years on the board. “I lostcount of the conversations he and I havehad relating school finance issues to howwe would handle them in the businessworld. I will miss those conversations.”

District Chairperson Jackie Magnusonsaid Sampers experience in state politicsis an asset not easily replaced.

“His interest in legislative issues, andhis ability to talk to both legislators’ andcitizens about the impact of issues at theschool level will be missed,” Magnusonsaid.

The vacant board seat will not be filledin the Nov. 8 school board election.

The board will discuss an appointmentprocess at its Sept. 12 meeting, Magnusonsaid. Sampers’ replacement will serve theremainder of his term, which runsthrough Jan. 6, 2014.

Though his time on the board hasended, Sampers plans to retain a connec-tion to the district, he said.

“I’ll still stay in touch with the educa-tion issues because that’s a passion ofmine,” Sampers said.

Eight file candidacy forISD 197 School Boardelection in November

Eight residents of IndependentSchool District 197 have filed candida-cy for the Nov. 8 school board elections.

Voters will elect four school boardmembers, who will each serve four-year terms, Jan. 1, 2012, to Dec. 31,2016. Incumbents Cristina Gillette,Robin Rainford, Mark Spurr and

Laurie Tostrud currently occupy thesefour seats.

Only two incumbents – Spurr andRainford – filed for re-election.

Westling said of his age. “If I did win, Idon’t want to spend all my money on thecasino floor.”

Taking first place is Westling’s goal, buthe’s proud just to have earned solid stand-ing among the best baggers in the country.

“I think that just being there in Vegas isan experience in itself, but I would love toget there and compete well,” Westling said.“I’m aiming for first.”

If he wins the national title, Westlingwill receive $10,000 and an appearance onthe David Letterman Show in New YorkCity shortly after the tournament in LasVegas.

Westling has won his Byerly’s store’sBest Bagger competition for four years ina row. Winners of individual store compe-titions move forward to compete againstother Byerly’s winners. The winner of thattournament then faces off against theLund’s champion. That winner is crownedthe company’s “Top Dog,” which Westlinghas won two years in a row. The Top Dogwins a seat at the statewide tournament.

Westling practiced dozens of hours inpreparation for this year’s state tourna-ment. He was assigned a bagging trainer,Dennis Calhoun, after he won the Top Dogaward.

Calhoun, a training specialist at Lund’sand Byerly’s grocery stores, had Westlingtrain by bagging blindfolded to increasehis muscle memory and also worked onhis bagging speed. One day, he practicedbagging for three straight hours, Westlingsaid.

But, that might not have been his mostgrueling training exercise.

“We went outside in the 106 degree heat

in the parking lot and practiced there,”Calhoun said.

To simulate the competition experi-ence, Calhoun organized for Westling totrain in front of a large group of peopleat Byerly’s.

“We’ve practiced in front of bigcrowds to get that scare factor and getthe nerves going,” Westling said.

Westling admits that his nerves gotthe best of him in first state competi-tion last year.

“This year, I was much more calmand collected and I didn’t let it get tome,” he said.

For the national tournament, howWestling handles the stress may deter-mine where he places.

“If I can control the nerves, I canplace very well,’ he said.

Mike Westling says the kind of per-son Blake is will help him in Las Vegas.

“He’s got a lot of determination,”Mike Westling said.

Calhoun said Westling has a greatchance to win.

“Blake is one of the strongest com-petitors we’ve ever brought to nation-als,” said Calhoun, who has trainedthree Lund’s state bagging champions.“I’m very confident because he handlespressure like no one else I’ve everseen.”

Westling will finish the summerworking at Byerly’s before headingback to college in the fall. He is a juniorat the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, majoring in biology.

He plans to continue his practice reg-imen at school, Skyping with Calhounover the next six months.

But, it’s hard for Westling not to lookahead to the national tournament.

“I’m just excited and I wish it werealready February,” he said.

“I see right now we are on incrediblebudge constraints,” Franken said. “It’stough to give the kind of funding we hadduring the stimulus package.”

Franken was appointed to theSenate’s Committee on Energy andNatural Resources this January. He islooking at ways to jumpstart the state’seconomy and job market on hisRenewable Energy Listening Tour thissummer.

“We need to be finding ways in differ-ent areas of growth,” Franken said.“Energy efficiency is one of those jobs.”

Franken’s next stop was Just KiddingAround, an early childhood care centerin Lakeville, where he met with staff andchildren.

Just Kidding Around received $2,500in federal grant money to make improve-ments to classrooms and learning sup-plies. Franken toured the childcare cen-ter and learned about its commitment toproviding a healthy learning place forchildren.

“It’s very exciting,” said JanKarrmann, director of Just KiddingAround, of Franken’s visit. “The grantsare so worthwhile because quality,affordable education is very important.”

Franken also toured Dakota CountyTechnical College in Rosemount andDakota Electric in Farmington.

“One is obviously the increase in gasprices has people looking for alternateways to get to work to make it cheaperfor them,” Selvig said. “Secondly, some ofthe (buses) have really stepped up withthe services they provide.”

An improved service Selvig referredto are the direct routes from the MVTA,SouthWest Transit and Maple GroveTransit to the University of Minnesota.

One bus rider who has taken advan-tage of this direct service is Tim O’Haraof Rosemount.

This spring, the timing belt failed inO’Hara’s vehicle and he had to rely onpublic transportation to get around.Recently unemployed, O’Hara donatesplasma for extra money at a plasma cen-ter near the university and takes thedirect route to get there.

Other times, he takes Route 442 fromthe Apple Valley Transit Station at CedarAve. and 155th Street West to the Mall ofAmerica and then hops on the lightrailto get to the university. During non-rushhour times, it costs $1.75 per route one-way.

“It works out great,” O’Hara said.“You really can’t beat that (rate) with the

price of gas these days.”Taking the bus has helped O’Hara

save money, but not having a car limitshis travel flexibility.

“I just wish there were more routes,”he said.

Since O’Hara has been taking the busfor only three months, he can’t speak toan increase in ridership from last year,but he has begun to recognize more andmore people on his routes.

“I see a lot of regulars,” O’Hara said.The MVTA has seen a 7 percent

increase for the first half of 2011 –1,270,924 riders — compared to 1,186,182in the first half of 2010, according to theSuburban Transit Association. TheMVTA is on pace to break the record setin 2008 – 2,638,803 riders.

BlueXpress Service led all systemswith a more than 15 percent increase forthe first six months of 2011 over the sameperiod last year. Plymouth Metrolinksaw nearly a 14 percent increase andMaple Grove Transit showed a 6.5 per-cent increase for the same period.

Winning back-to-back state champi-onships is difficult enough, but if AppleValley can win three in a row in boys soc-cer, it will be the stuff of legend.

The Eagles, Class AA champions in2009 and 2010 and holder of a state-record47-game winning streak, will take the fieldthis year with no returning starters.

The Eagles knew this was coming, butthe situation also presented a uniqueopportunity for the 105 players whoshowed up for the first day of tryouts Aug.15. How many defending state champi-onship teams have had all 11 starting posi-tions open?

“We need kids who are willing to beteam players, not individuals,” AppleValley coach Chuck Scanlon said. “Ascoaches, we have to know where kids canhelp us and where we need to put them sothey can succeed.”

Scanlon said last weekend he was notgoing to finalize the varsity roster untilafter scrimmages on Aug. 22, but portionsof the lineup are beginning to take shape.

Senior captain Derek Smith, a reservemidfielder last season, will be the Eagles’sweeper this season. “He’s playing welland communicating well,” Scanlon said.

Senior Josh Rosenthal is likely to takeover in goal. Junior captain ConnorFlanagan, previously a backup midfielder,will move to forward.

Senior midfielder David Racine, seniordefender Connor Uzlik and juniors JordeCharles, Mitch Dawson and MattChristiansen are among other players whocould move up into starting roles this sea-son.

The Eagles also are looking at the possi-bility of several sophomores cracking thevarsity lineup, Scanlon said.

South Suburban Conference footballteams see plenty of each other duringthe regular season, and they will in theplayoffs, too.

The Minnesota State High SchoolLeague, having added a seventh enroll-ment class for football several monthsago, last week created new section align-ments for the sport, which take effect inthe 2012 season.

Drawing the most attention, not sur-prisingly, were the section alignments inthe new Class 6A, which will consist ofthe state’s 31 largest high schools plusone private school that opted up (Cretin-Derham Hall).

The schools in Class 6A are groupedinto four eight-team sections. Section 3will have seven South SuburbanConference teams (Burnsville, Eagan,Eastview, Lakeville North, LakevilleSouth, Rosemount and Prior Lake) andPark of Cottage Grove from theSuburban East.

Grouping conference opponents inthe same section appeared to be a theme.

Class 6A, Section 4 will have sevenSuburban East teams. Seven NorthSuburban Conference teams are inSection 5. All five Lake Conferenceschools are in Section 6.

Brainerd, the only outstate team inClass 6A, was assigned to Section 5.

In the first round of playoffs, teamswill play within their own sections. Inthe second round, the four winningteams from one section will be matchedagainst the four winners from anothersection. The section-vs.-sectionmatchups are determined by randomdraw.

Once the field is down to eight teams,coaches will seed the top four teams,which will be matched against theunseeded squads by blind draw.

This format makes it possible forteams from the same conference and sec-tion to meet in the Class 6A champi-onship game. The semifinals and finalswill be played at the Metrodome, withthe championship game the Friday nightof Prep Bowl weekend.

The three South Suburban footballteams not in Class 6A – Apple Valley,

Bloomington Jefferson and BloomingtonKennedy – will be in Class 5A, Section 6,along with Farmington, MinneapolisSouthwest and St. Louis Park.

The one 2010 season starter who wouldhave been eligible to return, forwardHudson Fasching, has joined the USAHockey Under-17 national team in AnnArbor, Mich. The Apple Valley soccer teamlost a player capable of scoring 25-30 goals,Scanlon said.

A year ago, the Eagles outscored oppo-nents 100-5 en route to a second consecu-tive state championship and ninth overall.They used their skill and athletic ability to

put relentless pressure on opponents, andthey had forwards capable of finishing.

Because of all the new players, Scanlonsaid the Eagles would have to modify theirstyle.

“We’ll have to be a little more cautious,a little more defensive,” he said. “Our goal-keeper and defense are inexperienced.They’ll do well in time, but right nowthey’re inexperienced.”

On Aug. 20, the Eagles scrimmagedRichfield, Minnehaha Academy andEagan at home, defeating the first twohandily and edging Eagan 1-0.

The Eagan result was a bit of a surprisebecause the Wildcats have several return-

ing starters from a team that was second toApple Valley in last year’s Section 3AAplayoffs.

“Some of our guys got beat up a little bitat the start of the scrimmages,” Scanlonsaid. “I said, ‘I warned you. This is varsitysoccer now.’

“But the guys adjusted. They steppedup and did a nice job against Eagan.”

Apple Valley’s 47 consecutive victoriesover the last two seasons is already a staterecord. The Eagles would have go unbeat-en through the entire regular season tobreak Stillwater’s state-record 62-gameundefeated streak, set in the mid-1990s.

Apple Valley also has a chance to be

only the second team to win three consec-utive Class AA championships. Edinaaccomplished the feat in from 1999-2001.

Talking about records might seem pre-sumptuous for a team with all newstarters, but the Eagles haven’t avoided thesubject.

“We go into every game expecting towin,” Scanlon said. “We’ve told the kids,‘Now it’s your turn to step up your game.’”

Apple Valley begins its season with fiveconsecutive home games at Johnny CakeRidge Park, including the season againstOwatonna at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25.The Eagles will play Holy Family at 5p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
