Each year the members of Circle 1000 and our community strive to provide Hoag Cancer Center with donations that make a difference! The 2008 Annual Brunch was no exception, raising over $1.2 million dollars. Circle 1000 appreciatesthe generosity and loyalty of each contributor to this wonderful cause. Since Circle 1000’sinception 21 years ago, the total proceedsof more than $9.4 million dollars have been donated to Hoag Cancer Center and oncology needs. These funds have made a tremendousimpact on our community and Hoag Hospital,contributing immensely to cancer research and treatment.

Topping our news this year was our featured speaker, Tom Brokaw. After 21 years as the NBC Nightly News anchor and managing editor, Mr. Brokaw provided those attending the brunch a thought-provoking and inspiring speech. Theaudience of 650, at the Hilton in Costa Mesa,was mesmerized by Mr. Brokaw’s presence, sensational voice and speech. Mr. Brokaw is an involved advocate for cancer preventionand education. The world-renowned Americanjournalist also continues to produce and report in-depth documentaries that provide insight about current events around the world. He is a recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award and has been inducted as a fellow into the Academy of Arts and Sciences. It was an honor to have Mr. Brokaw join us and support Circle 1000

in its quest to fulfi ll its fundraising mission to fi nd cancer cures.

The 2008 annual brunch was dedicated to our cherished friend Gail Kirwan, a beloved Circle 1000 Founders' Committee member. Her presence was missed but her legacy and memory were ever-present. She was a remarkable woman and a wonderful example of compassion, philanthropy and friendship to our entirecommunity. In her memory, Circle 1000 will continue its commitment to fi ght cancer. Shewill always remain a part of our lives.

Looking forward, Circle 1000 is pleased toannounce the 2009 speaker for theAnnual Brunch will be Cokie Roberts. Ms. Roberts, a breast cancer survivor, was the chief congressional analyst for ABC News and

served as the senior news analyst for NPR for many years. Please mark Thursday, May 7,2009 on your calendar for Circle 1000’s22nd Annual Brunch. We hope you will support and join us for this very special event. Look for more details in the coming months.

Contributions from 2008 have been designated for the following areas at Hoag Hospital:

• $100,000 – Oncology Nursing

• $50,000 – Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship Endowment

• $50,000 – Gail Kirwan Memorial

• $800,000 plus remainder – Hoag Cancer Center Expansion
