PETROL PUMP Symptom - The engine failing to start leading to checks for petrol in the carburetor. Tracing back along the fuel line I noted that the pump wasn't pumping fully and fuel was leaking from the dome seal. Choice - Purchase a renovated pump or to attempt a repair. Solution - Due to the casting being made of poor quality aluminium the outlet tube inner dome had broken off. The repair was to bore the hole in the casting leading to the outlet valve to a 5/8 26 thread which was only just possible within the metal left. Photo shows offset and the need for a 4 jaw chuck ready for boring and tapping. Then machine a new piece of aluminium ,threaded to form a replacement dome. Insert into position to locate the offset to accommodate the top outer dome bolt. As part of the process fit a new Ethanol proof diaphragm and clean out the delicate Inlet and outlet valves taking care that the springs don't fly off into the unknown. Reassemble and test on the bench before fitting to the engine.
