Dear Resident

NOISY PILING WORKS IN THE SOUTHBANK AREA FOR WEST GATE FREEWAY UPGRADE: MAY TO SEPTEMBER 2016

We are writing to inform you about piling works that will take place in your area over the coming months as part of the CityLink Tulla Widening project. These works are in preparation for the construction of an additional lane on the West Gate Freeway.

As you may be aware, work on the CityLink Tulla Widening project is underway and involves adding lanes and other measures to improve the flow of traffic across the 24 kilometre section of freeway from the CityLink tunnels to Melbourne Airport. The project will also provide travel time savings per trip between Melbourne Airport and the West Gate Freeway during peak periods.

Generally, an additional lane is being added in each direction, as well as upgrades at key interchanges including Bell Street, Mount Alexander Road/Flemington Road and on the Bolte Bridge to West Gate Freeway entry ramp.

CPB Contractors is the construction contractor for the Bulla Road to Power Street section of the project.

What the works involve

We will be undertaking bored and driven sheet piling works in preparation for construction an additional lane on the West Gate Freeway. Bored and driven sheet piling works involve:

Installing steel sheets into the ground to protect any underground services during construction

Using two types of piling rigs to bore and drive piles into the ground Reinstating surrounding areas when piling works are complete

Where we will be working

Over the coming months, bored piling and driven sheet piling works will occur in the area of Southbank underneath the West Gate Freeway nearby: Crown Casino car park (Whiteman Street), McDonalds (City Road), Care Park car park (City Road) and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (Normanby Road). See map below.

When works will occur

Normal construction hours will be Monday to Saturday between 7am and 6pm, from May to September 2016. Piling works will only occur during normal construction hours to minimise noise disruption to nearby residents and businesses.

During these months, necessary night works (excluding piling works) will be between 7pm and 6am. If work is required outside these hours, we will notify you in advance.

What to expect

Traffic management including signage and personnel to safely guide motorists, cyclists and pedestrians around our works in Southbank. Traffic management will be in place on: Clarke Street, Whiteman Street, Normanby Road, Clarendon Street, Haig Street and City Road

Minor traffic delays may be experienced by residents and locals in these areas. Please allow extra time for your travel

Changed footpath conditions for pedestrians on sections of Clarendon Street and City Road Noise from heavy machinery and trucks in use and construction site vehicles Noise from piling works during normal construction hours only Varying levels of vibration that may be felt during construction activities

This work may be rescheduled in the event of unsuitable weather or other unavoidable circumstances. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we undertake these important works.

We are committed to keeping residents informed and minimising the impacts during construction, while keeping the community and our workers safe at all times. Managing and protecting the environment is also important to us and we are working with local and state government adhering to environmental laws to ensure any impact to the natural ecosystem is minimised.
