CSYMMETRY Toni Underhill
• Math
• Fourth Grade
• The purpose of this instructional Powerpoint is to help in the understanding of the concept symmetry.
• Given the powerpoint, the students will identify lines of symmetry in order to show the ability to recognize a line of symmetry for a two dimensional figure.
• CCSS.Math.Content.4.G.A.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
C
WHAT IS SYMMETRY?
• If something has symmetry it is the same on both sides.
• Symmetry = Reflection / Mirror
If you draw a line down the middle
of a butterfly, it will have
symmetry.
Some More Examples:
Many shapes have
symmetry
Many animals have
symmetry
Even some foods have symmetry
TWO TYPES OF SYMMETRY!!
If the line of symmetry goes up or
down,it is called VERTICAL symmetry
If the line of symmetry goes across, or side
to side, it is called
HORIZONTAL symmetry
Some objects have
VERTICAL and HORIZONTAL symmetry!
Which of these are symmetrical???
Click on the correct picture.
YES! This cat has
VERTICAL symmetry!
WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF SYMMETRY?
A.Diagonal & StraightB.Vertical & HorizontalC.Criss Cross & Upside Down
CORRECT!!
A VERTICAL line of symmetry is :
A.Side to SideB.Up and Down
CORRECT!!
A HORIZONTAL line of symmetry is:
A.Side to SideB.Up and Down
CORRECT!!!!
SUMMARY
You learned that there are two different types of symmetry: vertical and horizontal. You learned that some objects have vertical and horizontal symmetry. You also learned to recognize a line of symmetry in objects.
Can you find symmetry in the world around you?
