Switzerland: Country and PopulationThe CountryGeographical situation: Switzerland is situated between the 45th and the 48th degrees of latitude and the 5th and 11th meridians of longitude. Switzerland borders on the fol-lowing countries: Germany 362 km, France 572 km, Italy 744 km, Austria 180 km and Liechtenstein 41 km.

Of the total surface area�of�41,291�km2,�74.7%�are�productive�(31.3%�forests,�35.9%�arable� land and 7.5% residential areas) and 25.3% are covered by water, unproductive land or bear no vegetation.1

Energy and Waste12

Energy sources3 include oil (41.7%), nuclear fuel (26.0%), water (12.8%), gas (10.1%) and other�(9.4%).�Per�capita�costs�for�energy�are�3,665�Swiss�francs,�or�4.7%�of�GDP�per�capita�(2000: 5,7%). Foreign dependence is 76.6%. The main energy consumers are transportation (37.7%),�households�(26.5%),�industry�(19.0%)�and�services�(15.8%).�Per�capita�waste:53�729�kg,� of�which�390�kg�per�person�are�recycled.

PoliticsForm of government: The�Swiss�Confederation�(founded�in�1291)�has�been�a�Federal�Re-public since 1848 and is composed of 26 cantons, of which 6 are half-cantons. The govern-ment, or Federal Council, is a collegial board consisting of seven members. Parliament consists of�two�chambers�with�equal�rights:�The�Council�of�States�(cantonal�representation)�with� 46 members and the National Council (representation body of the people) with 200 members.

Political groups: The 200 seats of the National Council (representative body of the people) and the 46 seats of the Council of States (cantonal representation) are distributed among the fol-lowing political groups (as at 31 December 2015): Swiss People’s Party 68 (National Council)/6 (Council of States), Socialdemocrats 43/12, Christian Democrats/EPP 31/13, Parliamentary Group FDP-The Liberals 30/13, Green Party 12/1, Green Liberal Party 7/0, BDP fraction 7/1.

EducationThe 26 cantons retain primary responsibility for the three-stage educational system. Following compulsory schooling from nine to eleven years of age, young people enter the secondary stage offering a choice between general and vocational courses. The tertiary stage encom-passes advanced vocational training and university-level studies.
