Chapter 4Date 11/04/99, page 7
 Why certify products?
Certification ensures conformance with the standard and therefore interoperability
Certified devices are more and more required by end users to meet their quality standards
Certification process allows every vendor to benefit from the PROFIBUS experience and knowledge of the test laboratories
Certification can be used for marketing and advertisement, because the product is marked as “Certified” in the “Electronic Product Guide” (EPG) (CD ROM or Internet)

PIC certification
How to become a test laboratory? Candidate establishes environment to perform tests as
described in the related guidelines
Candidate prepares quality handbook according to the PROFIBUS guideline
Candidate applies for accreditation at PNO
Candidate is audited by an independent expert and result is reported to PI advisory board
Board decides whether the candidate is accredited
1st accreditation is valid for 1 year
Every re-accreditation is valid for 2 years
