Walk for A Cure

by Lisa Velotti Our 22nd annual Walk for a Cure took place on Saturday, May 11th. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and friends and family were on hand to help raise money for Alzhei-mer's, Autism, & Cancer Research. Although it appeared that attendance was low the John Michael Marino lodge was represented by members Marc Biundo, Janice Eubank , myself and a first time walker Maria Cerullo as well as seven additional family/friends. We also had one of the youngest and cutest walkers, my great - nephew Robert, 15 months old! This year Eleanor Jobaggy, Walk for a Cure chairperson, hand-ed out a trophy to the first three walkers to cross the finish line. Congratulations to our first-time walker, Maria Cerullo, for coming in first place. As the liaison for this event, I am fortunate and thank-ful to be supported by the John Michael Marino Lodge, John Maura, Maura Bros., Joseph Velotti - Roslyn Heights Funeral Home for their generous t-shirt sponsorship as well as Marianne & John O'Neil and Mari-anne Prince for their generous banner spon-sorship. Thank you all for helping to make a difference. Our lodge raised $1635 for three very worthy charities.

La Bella Lingua Award by Lisa Velotti

Once college applications and essays are submitted high school seniors start applying for scholarships. In January , CSJ La Bella Lingua applications were sent to fifty-seven high schools in Nassau County. The students are then selected by their guidance counselors/Italian Language Studies teachers. The student must submit a resume, transcript, and an essay. Although fifty-seven schools received the application twenty schools nominated a student. The CSJ provides one $500 award to a student chosen by the scholarship committee. This year, Lee & Maria Cerullo generously donated an additional $500 award in memory of Lee's parents. This additional donation enabled us to choose two students. The 2019 La Bella Lingua ceremony was held on May 9th at the Marco Polo Lodge. The event was well attended, especially by the John Michael Marino Lodge. The recipients were Rachel Nuccitelli from Syosset High School and Gabriella Palumbo from Mineola High School. Both young ladies graciously accepted their award and gave their speech in Italian. We congratulate them and wish them a bright future!

Origin of the Lodge's Name

The John Michael Marino Lodge No. 1389 is named after Private John Michael Marino, a resident of Port Washington and son of James Marino (one of the original Trustees/Curatore of the Lodge). Private Marino served in World War I and was the first American of Italian ancestry from Port Washington to die serving his country during that war. He fought gallantly and heroically in the trenches of Northern France and Belgium and died on November 9, 1918, at the age of twenty- three, less than forty-eight hours before the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918.

Dear Brother and Sisters, As I reflect upon my last two years as President of the John Michael Marino Lodge, my first thought is how quickly those months have gone by. Yes, it might have first appeared to be a bit overwhelming but I took a deep breath and approached each day one day and one step at a time. The truth is that we could not have accomplished all that we did without the team-spirit attitude and support of the officers and members of our incredible Lodge. It is for this reason that I am extremely thankful to all of you. Your support was specifically evidenced in Officer and General Meeting attendance; set-up and participation at our St. Joseph’s Day Cele-brations at Our Lady of Fatima Church and St. Peter of Alcantara Church; the record-breaking Lodge attendance at the Cooley’s Anemia Dine Around Fundraiser; participation in the annual Walk for a Cure event at Eisenhower Park. Our Lodge’s Annual Family Picnic; the incredible and tireless work performed at our annual Italian Festival; attendance at the October Heritage & Culture programs at the Port Washington and Manhasset Public Libraries; the Gift of Sight and the Garibaldi-Meucci Lunch fundraisers; the November 2017 Memorial Mass in honor of deceased members and family members of our Lodge; the annual Christmas Party. We have built a solid foundation over ninety-three years and we will continue to strive to reach even greater heights, always keeping in our hearts and minds the principles of Liberty ~ Equality ~ Fraternity. We recently implemented a new telephone contact system entitled “Call-Em-All” as an additional communication tool to reach out and notify our members of recent “need to know” occurrences, as well as upcoming events. Thank you to our Lodge’s outgoing 2018-2019 Council and best wishes to the incoming 2019-2020 Council. We sometimes get so busy that we forget to say two simple words, so I would again like to take this opportunity to say “THANK YOU” for all your support and hard work these past two years. God bless our members, our families, our Veterans, and the USA. Fraternally, Sandi Nunziata, Immediate Past President

20th Anniversary of the Beatification of Padre Pio

by Marianne Bortone Prince

May 2, 2019 marked the 20th Anniversary of the beatification of Padre Pio at the Vatican in Rome. I recently learned that our Lodge Past President Lou Biundo attended the 1999 beatification as a member of the National Padre Pio Prayer Group. The photograph you see above was taken at the ceremony and Lou appears third from the left with Group members and Cardinals. A “once in a lifetime” experience, to say the least.

I vividly recall the day I made my First Confession just prior to my First Communion. It was the day that my mom told me about Padre Pio. She was born in the Province of Foggia, located in the Italian region of Puglia. She told me that Padre Pio traveled to her home town in San Marco en Lamis and heard the confessions of the large group of children, including herself, who were about to make their First Communion. In her senior years, my mom prayed to Saint Padre Pio and carried his “holy card” in her handbag. Interestingly enough, I also carry a card of this beloved saint.

After learning about Lou Biundo’s attendance at the 1999 beatification, I became curious about the events leading up to Padre Pio’s saint-hood. I thought our readers would find the following Wikipedia piece informative and interesting.

In 1982, Pope John Paul II authorized the Archbishop of Manfredonia to open an investigation to determine whether Padre Pio should be can-onized. The investigation continued for seven years. In 1990 Pio was declared a Servant of God, the first step in the process of canonization. The investigation however did not lead to any public factual clearance by the Church on his previous 'excommunication' or on the allegations that his stigmata were not of a supernatural kind. Moreover, Pio's stigmata were remarkably left out of the obligatory investigations for the canonization process in order to avoid obstacles prohibiting a successful closure.

Beginning in 1990, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints debated how Padre Pio had lived his life, and in 1997 Pope John Paul II de-clared him venerable. A discussion of the effects of his life on others followed. Cases were studied such as a reported cure of an Italian wom-an, Consiglia de Martino, associated with Padre Pio's intercession. In 1999, on the advice of the Congregation, John Paul II declared Padre Pio blessed. A media offensive by the Capuchins was able to realize a broad acceptation of the contested saint in society.

On July 1, 2004, John Paul II dedicated the Sanctuary of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (sometimes referred as Padre Pio Pilgrim-age Church), built in the village of San Giovanni Rotondo to the memory of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.

On March 3, 2008, the body of Pio was exhumed from his crypt, forty years after his death, so that his remains could be prepared for display. A church statement described the body as being in "fair condition". Archbishop Domenico Umberto D'Ambrosio, Papal legate to the shrine in San Giovanni Ro-tondo, stated "the top part of the skull is partly skeletal but the chin is perfect and the rest of the body is well preserved." Archbishop D’Ambrosio also confirmed in a communiqué “the stigmata are not visible.” He said that Pio's hands looked like they had just undergone a manicure. It was hoped that morticians would be able to restore the face so that it would be recognizable. However, because of its deterioration, his face was covered with a lifelike silicone mask.

Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect for the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, celebrated Mass for fifteen thousand devotees on April 24th at the Shrine of Holy Mary of Grace, San Giovanni Rotondo, before the body went on display in a crystal, marble, and silver sepulcher in the crypt of the monastery. Saint Padre Pio is wearing his brown Capuchin habit with a white silk stole embroidered with crystals and gold thread. His hands hold a large wooden cross. Eight hundred thousand pilgrims worldwide, mostly from Italy, made reser-vations to view the body through December 2008, but only seventy two thousand people a day were able to file past the crystal coffin.

Saint Padre Pio’s remains were placed in the Church of Saint Pio, which is beside San Giovanni Rotondo. In April 2010, they were moved to a special golden "Cripta". A statue of Pio in Messina, Sicily attracted attention in 2002 when it supposedly wept tears of blood.

Saint Pio of Pietrelcina is known as the Patron Saint of Civil Defense Volunteers, after a group of one hundred sixty petitioned the Italian Bishops’ Conference for this designation. The bishops forwarded the request to the Vatican, which gave its approval to the designation. He is also “less officially” known as the Patron Saint of Stress Relief and the “January blues” after the Catholic Enquiry Office in London proclaimed him as such. They designated the most depressing day of the year, identified as January 22nd, as “Don’t Worry Be Happy Day”, in honor of Padre Pio’s famous advice: “Pray, hope, and don’t worry.”

Padre Pio has become one of the world's most popular saints. There are more than three thousand "Padre Pio Prayer Groups" worldwide, with three million members. The first Saint Padre Pio in the world was established on June 16, 2002 in Kleinburg, On-tario, Canada. There are parishes in Vineland and Lavallette, New Jersey, and Sydney, Australia, and shrines in Buena, New Jersey, and Santo Tomas, Batangas, Philippines, dedicated to Padre Pio. A 2006 survey by the magazine Famiglia Cristiana found that more Italian Catholics pray to Saint Padre Pio for intercession than to any other figure.

In 2009 it was announced that a renewable energy statue of Padre Pio was to be built on a hill near the town of San Giovanni Ro-tondo in the southeastern province of Puglia, Italy, the town where he is commemorated. The project would cost several million pounds, with the money to be raised from the Saint's devotees around the world. The statue would be coated in a special photo-voltaic paint, enabling it to trap the sun's heat and produce solar energy, making it an "ecological" religious icon.

The remains of Saint Pio were brought to the Vatican for venera-tion during the 2015–2016 Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Saint Pio and Saint Leopold Mandic were designated as “saint-confessors” to inspire people to become reconciled to the Church and to God, by the confession of their sins. Editors Note: On a family trip to Italy in 1996, my daughter Delphine Amato, lost her passport and return plane ticket. We went to the nearest church by our hotel, and there was a statue of Padre Pio beckon-ing us. We prayed, and the following day we received a phone call at the hotel that her documents were found and would be returned to the hotel. When telling his story to Lou Biundo, he gave Delphine this medallion and booklet so she would never forget that experience.

On Wednesday afternoon May 29th, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and members of the Town Board honored seniors from across North Hempstead. These seniors were honored for outstanding service to their communities and for their work with various senior groups. Hundreds attended the event, which was held at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington. Dozens of members of the John Michael Marino Lodge attended the event to celebrate Maria and the honor bestowed upon Lodge Principal Trus-tee Maria Carpinelli. This recognition is so well deserved because Maria has not only been actively involved with our Lodge, but also with the community of Port Washington at large. Maria was born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn New York, the oldest of two children born to Angelo and Anna (nee Ranieri) Spagnoletti. Angelo immigrated to the United States from St. Giogio La Molara, province of Beneveto, which is located in the Campa-nia region of Italy. A graduate of St. Nicholas High School in Brooklyn, Maria attended Nassau Community College where she earned a Degree of Associ-ate in Science, Magna Cum Laude. Maria went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from SUNY Empire State College. Maria was married to her childhood sweetheart Tony for fifty-four years and she resides in the same Manorhaven home that she and Tony shared after their marriage fifty-six years ago. Maria is the proud parent of Anthony Jr. and Donna-Marie Valenti (Dan) and equally proud of her grandchildren Olivia, Danny, and Luke. Maria has been an active, energetic, and vital member of the John Michael Marino Lodge No.1389 Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America for close to twenty years, having held several Lodge board positions prior to being appointed Principal Trustee on March 22nd of this year. Family, faith, and community make up the character of this outstanding citizen of the Town of North Hempstead. In addition to Maria’s association with the John Michael Marino Lodge, Maria’s community service includes the following: 1. Manorhaven PTA - Past Treasurer and Past President 2. Port Washington Parents Council - Past Treasurer 3. Paul D. Schreiber High School PTA (Co-chaired two Gambols) 4. Chairperson of the committee that raised funds for the installation of air-conditioning in the Paul D. Schreiber High School auditorium 5. Membership Highlights

by Marianne Bortone Prince, Membership Chairperson

For the second time in three months, history was made at the John Michael Marino Lodge. It was on the evening of May 15th that a grand-parent along with her grandchildren were initiated as new Lodge members at the same ceremony. Theresa Bruno and grandsons Joey Velotti and Sal Velotti were beaming as they were sworn in as new members. Lodge President Marc Biundo made history in March because he became the first president of the Lodge whose parent, Lou Biundo, is a Lodge Past President. Appearing left to right in the photo above are District Deputy Anthony Ventiera, Lodge Corresponding Secretary and sponsor Lisa Velotti, new members Joseph Velotti, Theresa Bruno, Salvatore Velotti, Lodge Orator and sponsor Joe Velotti, and President Marc Biundo.

Membership Generation Incentive Program

Our Lodge is sponsoring an exciting new and special membership generation incentive program that is retroactive to January 2019 and will run up to and including April 2020. We hope to return to the thrilling days of yesteryear when our Lodge made history by initiating new members for sixteen consecutive months. It was a wonderful achievement and we would like to repeat and even beat that previous rate of success. We have set a Level I and Level II goal for John Michael Marino Lodge new member initiations between the period of January 2019 up to and including April 2020. These goals can easily be achieved if every member of our Lodge sponsored at least one new member for our Lodge during this period. Level I - 50 New Member Initiations Achieved For every new member that you sponsor toward the 50 goal, you will receive a raffle ticket for a special drawing. The John Michael Marino Lodge member holding the winning ticket will receive two round-trip Delta Airline ticket vouchers (compliments of an anonymous donor) good for travel within the continental United States. The ticket will be drawn at the May 2020 General Meeting. Level II - 75 or More New Member Initiations Achieved Should we reach Level II (75 or more new members), in place of the Level I goal (50 new members) the prize will be upgraded to two round-trip Delta Airline ticket vouchers good for travel outside the continental United States. Sponsors of new members initiated January 2019 - April 2019 will be included in the drawing. Membership Chairperson Marianne Bortone Prince will be excluded from the drawing, but any new members sponsored by her will count towards our goal. A membership application can be found in this edition of our newsletter. Completed applications can be mailed to the following address: Marianne Bortone Prince, Membership Chairperson 209-39 23rd Avenue Apt 1A Bayside, NY 11360 Please do not hesitate to contact Marianne at 718 631-7917 with any questions regarding this new and exciting Membership Generation In-centive Program. Good luck to one and all.

Memorial Day Parade 2019

There may not have been the smell of "grease paint" but there was certainly a deafening "roar from the crowd" as officers and members of our Lodge showed patriotic pride and sense of community by donning our traditional parade attire and marching down Main Street in the annual Port Washington Memorial Day Parade on May 27th. The crowd waived flags and gave thunderous applause when Rosemary Andersen appeared and participated in the entire length of the line of march, escorted by her son and Lodge member Glen. Rosemary is a long-time member of our Lodge who will be celebrating her 100th Birthday on November 17th.
