One Year Ago

Tomorrow is Jameson’s birthday (January 24). A year ago Jameson’s “Birthday Party” was a

bunch of friends and family loading up moving trucks and driving up to Hershey. We had a moving truck

and a cattle trailer (remember, we moved from southern Lancaster) full of stuff. In Hershey we were met

by some new faces helping us unload things into a storage unit and my brother-in-law’s townhouse.

The following Monday I started at Spring Creek with my temporary office set up in the parlor and a

host of treats and messages of welcome waiting. I spent the first day in my office trying to get my

bearings and finishing up an online class on preaching. It was a whirlwind. Somehow we managed to get

a service together and preach a sermon.

Over this past year you all have been a blessing to me and to our family. I’ve been so grateful to

find a church family who has welcomed us in. I’m excited about what God can do in and through the Body

of Christ at Spring Creek.

February 10 is our Vision Sunday. It’s a combined service where we’ll participate in Communion

with one another. There’s also a meal and a council meeting following the service. It’s a little of

everything that makes the Church of the Brethren what it is. Community worship, Community Fellowship,

and Community Discernment. This is also a day that I’d like for us to take a step back and look at what

God has been doing in our life together and to talk about where and how God is leading us in the future.

Don’t expect any prophetic revelations. God may still choose to work that way at times, but it seems more

often God chooses now to work through a community of faith who seeks the mind of Christ together.

Looking ahead to February 10, spend some time reading Romans 15:1-13 and some time meditating on 1

Corinthians 1:10.

The message of Chronicles is one of hope. As exiles return,

they’re encouraged to restore worship and faithfully seek God. The

Chronicler looks into the past and tells stories to give the people hope

for the future. February 10 is an opportunity for us to do our own

version of this story, to look a little into the past to get hope and vision

for what God might do in the future. I hope you can join us!

Blessings, Pastor Adam

Coats for Cocoa has become an annual event

which distributes winter coats to economically

disadvantaged children within Derry Township School

District. Each October we have seen an increase in

the number of coats we have provided to our

students. Last year we even ran out of the adult

sized coats for our older boys and girls. Since winter

coats are all on clearance, it seems the most

opportune time to stock up. We would appreciate

donations of new winter coats of any size. We will be

collecting coats at Spring Creek on two Sundays:

February 10 and 17. A collection box will be in the

Gathering Area. Thank you!

We've had a note from the Sylvia’s and Indian Mobile

~ Peace Perspectives ~

I Chronicles 16:7-36

Anger is murder in the heart

Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually (I Chron. 16:11)

Murder includes much more than the outward act of taking a human life. Murder includes harsh anger and

bitter speech. We can be perfectly innocent of taking a human life with a gun or a sword or a bomb, and yet

be guilty of breaking the sixth commandment.

Jesus says [in Matthew 5:21-26] that merely to be angry with a brother or sister is a form of murder; and can

lead to judgment - judgment before the Jewish Council, as well as God’s eternal judgment. We can be as

angry as we want at the devil, and at sin but to be angry with other people because they insulted us, is a

sinful and selfish and hurtful thing. Jesus says that anger is really murder in the heart....

In verses 23-24 we are told about the person who comes to the church service (the synagogue) to worship

God, but on the way, he remembers that a friend has a grievance against him. Jesus says, “Forget the

worship; go to your friend and apologize, and become reconciled to him - and them come and offer your

sacrifices to God.” We cannot be right with God if we are not right with our brothers and sisters. Verses 25-26

say that matters between brothers and sisters in Christ are to be settled as quickly and quietly as possible.

There is no need to sue at the law and to go to court. God’s people are to turn the other cheek, go the second

mile, and be quick to become reconciled - rather than to hate, and curse, and resist, and resent, and grumble,

and attack. We cannot have a clear channel of fellowship with God if the channel of fellowship with other

human beings is clogged and broken.

—Harold S. Martin

Instead of cursing, Lord, let me speak words of blessing and peace.

II Chronicles 29:1-11,16-19

Choosing different means

The priests went into the inner part of the house of the Lord to cleanse it, and they brought out all the unclean

things (2 Chron. 29:16a)

Choosing different means, seeking another kind of victory, renouncing the marks of victory-this is the only

possible way of breaking the chain of violence, of rupturing the circle of fear and hate.

—Jacques Ellul

God, you lead from darkness into light, from despair to hope,

from no way into the way of life and joy and peace.

May it be so in the world today.

W e have already processed $198,000 in notes to date! In addition, we have received

we can save at least $23,000 in interest payments over the remaining life of our

savings could have in the life of the church and its ministries. Our remaining
