Swissy Summer Fun Party! By Doreen Holly

Here are some party pictures! The party went from 2-7 PM with people coming and going. We had about 30 people and 15 dogs. Rhea was banned because she is in season. Poor girl. Titan had a blast. He's the one in the pool with Gertie. The guy with the yellow shirt is Chris. He and Barb hosted the party. They have a huge fenced-in yard with tons of shade trees and a beautiful porch and patio. I was his 8th grade teacher...and now he's 30. Yikes! Barb doesn't even have Swissys. She went along on our last event, the hike at the bridges and lunch at the outdoor restaurant. She loved us so much she offered to host a party! The band had to back out at the last minute, but Chris hooked his IPOD up to a speaker system. We had tons of food...from BBQ chicken to hot dogs to hamburgers to porta-bella mushrooms to brownies to cheesecake..I think you get the idea:-) It was amazing how all of the dogs got along. The youngest was 4 months and the oldest almost 9...Kaiser… Burley's brother! The corgi was so cute...just walked under the Swissys!

Fall Working Play Day—Sept 18 3988 Stuarts Draft Highway, Waynsboro, VA

By Nancy Kechner

The C & P Swissy Club will be holding its 1st An-nual "Fall Working Play Day" in Stuart's Draft, VA on September 18th. Everyone is invited for hands-on clinics featuring:

Weight Pull training and tips at the Power Mountain Weight Pull Club with very experi-enced weight pull veterans Rob Via and Kathy Houchens, IWPA judges. Harnesses available for use, indoor carpeted track, small truck (75#) and large truck (300#) for begin-ners and experienced pullers. Legs can be earned so you may want to bring your dog’s official weight. Otherwise, the Pullers Club has a weight sling that lifts the dog off the ground.

Drafting with Mary Jo and Jim Rasmussen. Carts, beginner carts, harnesses and acres of trails available. Learn tips and tricks from two experienced drafters.

Intro to Agility with Jan Collins and Megan Fletcher. Equipment and safety and training tips available. Tunnels, low dog walk, tire, ta-ble, channel weaves, jumps, practice boards and a ladder will be set up for you to intro-duce your dog to some basic, safe obstacles.

So... if you want to practice, get additional point-ers, see if your dog will actually do the activity, or want to spend a day playing with your Swissies with other Swissy folks in the beautiful Shenan-doah Valley-- this may be right for you.

Afterwards we'll have a cookout at the site where food will be available for nominal fee too cover expenses.

Please contact Nancy Kechner for more info!

Stuart's Draft is 25 miles West of Charlottesville, 2 miles south of I-64, 6 miles east of I-81.

Sniffing out the Best Kennels By www.checkbook.org To help you choose a kennel that you and your pet will be happy with, we gathered information on Washington area kennels.

Our Ratings Tables report ratings for each kennel from a survey completed by area CHECKBOOK and Consumer Reports subscribers. Though the surveys asked consumers to rate kennels for their care of dogs, owners of cats and other pets may find the data interesting.

Although no pet owner can be sure s/he knows what a kennel is really like when outsiders are not around, many pet owners inspect the kennels they use—everyone should—and most are aware of the condition of their dogs before and after boarding.

As you can see in the Ratings Table on the following pages, there is substan-tial variation in the customer survey ratings. For example, scores for ―returning dog in good condition‖ ranged from 33 percent ―superior‖ to over 90 percent ―superior.‖

In addition to the results from our customer surveys, for firms that were evaluated in our last full, published article, our Ratings Table show tallies of complaints we gathered from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for a recent three-year period. We also checked for complaints filed with local govern-ment consumer affairs offices, but none of those agencies had received any complaints for the firms listed on our Ratings Tables for the recent two-year period we checked. You can check current BBB complaint information on any firm by contacting the BBB at 303-494-8000 or by visiting their website. Consumer protection offices in the District, Fairfax County and Montgomery County also have available online databases that let you check complaint his-tories on any firm.

Good news for pets: there are very few complaints. Only a handful of the firms on our Ratings Table had more than one complaint on file. Interest-ingly, kennels with complaints on file against them scored lower than other kennels on our survey of their customers. For example, the kennels with complaints were rated ―superior‖ for ―overall performance,‖ on average, but 70 percent of their surveyed customers, compared to 76 percent for kennels with no complaints on file.

There are big price differences. To board a medium-sized dog for one week, at the time of our last full, published article, prices range from $199 to $406. That’s just for the basic boarding. At some kennels, the extras can add up fast: additional exercise for your furry friend will cost you an extra $8 or more per day, and administering a needed pill might cost $3 or more per day. Also, some have tight limits on when you must drop off and pick up your pet to avoid paying for an extra day.

It can add up to a substantial chunk of your vacation budget. But you have some control over the final tally. Fortunately, some of the highest rated ken-nels have below-average prices.

Please see Ratings Table on the following pages...

Check Out Kennel you are

Considering

Be wary of any kennel that

won’t let you inspect its facili-

ties unannounced during

regular operating hours.

Check whether a dog will have

an indoor and outdoor run

that is large enough and with

available protection for the

sun, rain, cold and heat.

Be sure animals are protected

from one another and that

there is proper fencing to keep

your pet in and other animals

out.

Be sure proper health protec-

tions are in place—that the

kennel is clean and not exces-

sively smelly, that all pets are

required to have proof of

proper vaccinations, and that

pets are carefully examined for

signs of disease or parasites at

check-in.

Size up the staff members—

whether they answer your

questions, show affection for

the animals, and are available

24 hours per day.

Article is taken from the Washington Post, Local Living section, July 8, 2010, page 15.

Over the Rainbow…

Cornman Acres Rufus

1/3/03-7/14/10

Ru joined our family almost 8 years ago when my son Chris was 11. He was the perfect dog for a young boy and his friends. No guardian nature to Ru at all. There were always lots of boys spending the night at our house and in the morn-ings I would find Ru curled up with one of them. He loved them all and they all thought he was the best.

Chris is the one that decided he wanted to do some agility with Ru. Somehow I ended up becoming very attracted to the detail of training. So my start with Al-bert was all because of Ru.

Ru was the only Swissy of mine that my father knew before he died. Ru accepted every puppy I brought home and taught them well. He and Albert were the best of buddies. Ru loved his runs to the creek, all people and all dogs. He needed no adjustment time he just knew he loved you. At night he would come into the kitchen and sit with such a face that we started our nightly rituals of a few meatballs. Just Ru and no other dogs and for some reason it seemed so special to him. Ru brought so much to my whole family and I will miss him each and every day.

I loved the Swissy Licks. More, I love what this group has matured in to. The sharing of show information, support of each other at events, and overall positivism for our breed and doing great things together recreationally has been not only refreshing but inspirational. I thank everyone who is a part of the club for making the club such a positive place for get togethers and so-cializing with our dogs.
