A re you vegetarian?” It’s a question I

get asked a lot.

I eat plant-based food at home,

but I’ll expand my diet when dining with

those who eat differently. One thing I’ll

never do, however, is intentionally eat

unclean meat (see Leviticus 11).

Why does it matter if I chew on a pig’s

leg or have shrimp in my soup? The Bible

says that my “body is the temple of the

Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19). It’s as if

my body were a church. If I want my church

to be a clean place, why should it be any

different when it comes to my body?

I also feel better when I eat plant-based

food than when I eat meat. I can’t imagine

how I’d feel if I ate unclean meat!

The positive

result of healthy

eating should

be a no-brainer.

After all, God

gave the first

humans plants to

eat (see Genesis

1:29), and God

would give

humans only

good things.

Your friend,

No-Pig Diet

Fooled By Old Clothes and Moldy BreadJust how important are

coaches? For that answer let’s jump into the Word.

In Joshua 9:15 the Israelite leader Joshua made a peace trea-ty with the Gibeonites. However, verse 14 highlights that Joshua missed the most important step for success.

His mistake is understandable. Back when he was a rookie, Joshua had shown great potential, and God

had chosen him to be Moses’ successor. God promised Joshua that He would always be with him, but in return Joshua needed to

follow His commandments to have continued success. Joshua took that

challenge and gained some huge early wins. Under God, Joshua parted the waters at

Jordan and made the Jericho walls fall down. All of those successes soon became widespread, and many tribes and kingdoms feared the Israelites and their God.

Enter the Gibeon-ites. They were one of the tribes that heard about every-thing God had done for the Israelites, and they were fearful that they would soon be defeated. So they planned to trick Joshua. They put on old clothes and shoes; packed old, moldy

food; and told Joshua that they were from a distant land. They spoke about all the great victories that they had heard, even though they lived “far away,” and now they were here to make a treaty. The Gibeonites’ goal was to live at peace with the Israelites so that they wouldn’t be destroyed. And that was where Joshua made his mistake. Joshua 9:14 says

that the Israelites didn’t con-sult with God. They were fooled into thinking the Gibeonites were, as they said, from a far

country, when they weren’t. As a result, they made a treaty with a tribe without God’s approval and had to live with them.

The Gibeonites represent a mistake Joshua and the Israelites literally had to live with. Their mistake is our lesson, though. The Gibeonites used flattery and deception to trick Joshua, and as humans, sometimes that’s hard for us to initially see. But God’s promise to Joshua was the same one He’s made to us; He’s always there to help us face any battle.

At every level in sports, there is a head coaching position. It would be strange to be without one, because a coach helps determine a team’s success. A coach is the defined authority that ensures everyone plays to their strengths, manages team chemistry, and (most impor-tant) has clear vision on what success means.

If we look at God as our coach, He can do all of that for us, plus more! As Joshua discovered, not consulting with God can mean you’ll end up having to live with your failures.

Thomas’ little sister wouldn’t leave him alone!

M om?” Thomas walked into the living room.

“Mom?” Thomas’ little sister Susan walked in right behind him, copying every move he made and every word he said.

“Susan won’t stop copying me!” Thomas tattled.

“Susan won’t stop copy-ing me!” Susan promptly mocked.

Mom looked at Susan with a look that only moms can give.

Immediately Susan turned around and left the room, knowing she was pushing her limits.

“She’s driving me crazy, Mom!” Thomas started complaining as soon as Susan was out of earshot. “Everything I say, she re-peats. Everywhere I go, she follows. I don’t know how much more of her mocking and copying I can take.” Thomas threw up his hands, obviously frustrated at the situation.

“I’m sorry,” Mom said.Thomas wasn’t satisfied. He

thought Susan should be pun-ished for all the annoying things she had done lately. She gets away

with everything just because she’s so much younger than I am! he thought.

“Do you know what she did the other day when Kevin was here?” Thomas asked his mom.

“I can’t imagine,” Mom said.“She followed us around everywhere we went. We

couldn’t get away from her.” Thomas took a deep

breath. “She repeated every word we said

to each other. And when we would try

to walk away from her, she would follow right

behind Kevin and try to copy his walk!” Thomas thought that Mom surely would do something about the problem with his little sister, but he added one more thing for good mea-sure. “She also listened to my phone conversation

with Chad one day last week!”Mom thought for a moment

before she spoke. Her response wasn’t fast enough for Thomas.

“Aren’t you going to do any-thing?” Thomas pointed at his mom and raised his voice.

him that he had crossed the line with his attitude.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly, and in a much more respectful tone of voice, he asked, “ Will you please tell her to leave my friends and me alone?”

Mom took a deep breath. “They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

Thomas made a face. “ What does that mean?”

“It means those who want to copy you want to be like you,” Mom explained.

Thomas thought about it. “It ought to be against the law!”

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Mom said.

“ Why not?”“ Well, the Bible tells us to be

imitators of Jesus Christ. In fact, in Ephesians 5:1 the Bible says, ‘Therefore be imitators of God.’ ”

Thomas thought about that verse before he spoke. “I know that verse. My teacher told us that in church a little while ago. She even had us memorize a passage in Philippians.”

“Oh, really?” Mom seemed ex-cited. “Can I hear you recite it?”

Thomas bobbed his head back and forth, a little embarrassed. “I guess. Philippians 2:5-8. ‘Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made

Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obe-dient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.’ ”

“ Very good!” The way his mom smiled made Thomas know that she was proud of him. “Now, what did your teacher say that passage meant?”

“That we are supposed to be like Christ. We need to do every-thing we do for God, and do it with a Christlike attitude. We also need to be humble and obedient, just as Christ was.” After a mo-ment Thomas sighed.

“ What’s on your mind now?” His mom wanted to know.

“Just that I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on Susan for copying me all the time anymore,” he said.

Mom patted him on the knee. “ Well, the good news is that this is just a stage she’s going through. Pretty soon she’ll be busy with all of her own activities and friends, and she won’t have the desire to copy you anymore.”

“It’s OK,” Thomas said, smiling, “I’m going to try my hardest to act like Jesus would. Then if Susan still wants to act like me, she’ll be learning to act like Him, too!”

Mom smiled. “I think that is an absolutely wonderful idea.”

How many names of books of the Bible can you come up with using only the letters on the tiles here? We came up with 17. Can you? (For books with a numbered prefix, such as 1 Samuel, take off the prefix, but only count both books as one.) You cannot use the same letter more than once in the same word.

It was another do-nothing, no-church day. The Spencers, who usually took the Taylors

to church, were at camp meeting for the second Sabbath in a row.

“Oh, it is so hot,” Elly lamented. “I wish we could go swimming to cool off.”

“Good luck with that,” her brother Dave said. “Beaver Creek is too far away and is probably dry by now, and because the dam was finished, the Pend-d’Oreille River is—”

“Is what?” Elly asked, noticing the gleam in Dave’s eye.

“It’s too deep for swimming, but it would be perfect for boat-ing or rafting.”

“But we don’t have a boat, and we don’t have a raft, either.”

“No, but I know where we can get the things to make one.”

“ Where?”“Five Mile Creek. There’s a de-

serted cabin up there, right beside the water. And there are a couple of empty oil drums, too. They

would provide just the buoyancy we need to stay afloat forever. There are even boards we need to make the platform to sit on.”

“But wouldn’t that take a lot of work? Would it be right to do that on Sabbath?”

“It wouldn’t take any work at all. We just need a couple ropes to tie the barrels together, and then put the boards across.”

So without saying anything to Mom or Dad, we prepared for our grand adventure.

The raft floated like a dream. Dave used his pocket knife to shape a board from the dilapidat-ed cabin so that it could be used

as a paddle.“ Where to, my fair lady?” he

asked when Elly climbed on.“Do you think we could go over

to the American side? It would be cooler there.”

“ Your wish is my command,” Dave answered.

“Look, there’s a cabin there,” Elly said when they were about halfway across. “I wonder if any-one lives there. It would be fun to meet an American.”

“ Well, we can climb up there and see,” Dave said. “It could be the home of a trapper or prospec-tor. I heard there that were sev-eral claims and even mines in this valley, on both sides of the river.”

“It’s neat that the river marks the border here,” Elly remarked.

Dave and Elly pulled their raft ashore when they arrived on the American side. Then Dave led the way as they climbed up toward the cabin.

“Doesn’t look as if anyone is around,” he called back to Elly.

“Do you think we could look inside?” she asked.

“ Why not? The door’s open.”There really wasn’t much to see.

Besides a couple bunks, there was a rough table and a couple chairs. On one bunk was the remains of a quilt that had obviously been used by some woodland crea-tures. On the stove were a few banged-up pots, and a few dishes sat on the shelf by the table.

“I think someone’s coming,”

Dave announced, going to the window. “I hear a car.”

“Oh, dear,” Elly cried. “I hope they won’t be mad that we went inside their home.”

“Let’s just get out,” Dave said, putting his words into action. Elly followed.

The car had stopped, and two men got out, one with a gun. “ Whoa!” the other said, staring. “Do you kids live here?”

“No,” Dave answered. “Do you?”“No, we just came up here to

check out possibilities for hunt-ing. But how’d you get here? This place is miles from anywhere.”

“ We made a raft and came across the river.”

“ You can be thankful that you didn’t capsize and drown!”

“Do you know that there are bears and cougars here?” the man with the gun asked, holding on to his weapon as if for dear life. “They would be delighted to meet you two and have you for dinner.”

“I suppose you didn’t check with the border guards, either,” the first man said.

Dave and Elly just shook their heads.

“So you are illegal aliens,” the armed man commented. “ What are we going to do with you?”

“Let us go?” Dave suggested hopefully.

“ To go back across that river? No way! If anything would happen to you, we’d have it on our con-sciences the rest of our lives.”

FIRST LADYOF

FORT LAUDERDALE

Ivy’s simple childhood prepared her for life in the small settlement.

Part 1 of 2: Pioneer Girl

Ma! May we make some soda water?” Ivy’s brother Bloxham asked.

“I don’t see why not,” said Ma. “There are still a few lemons on the trees, but they won’t last long this late in the season. Bring in as many as you can, and you can make soda water one last time this year.”

“Hurray!” Eagerly the chil-dren ran off to collect the last of the lemons on nearby trees. They squeezed out the juice, and then stirred in water and plenty of cane syrup. After that, they poured the drink into glasses, and each child added a pinch of baking soda. There were smiles,

giggles, and delighted squeals as they watched the concoction fizz. What a treat!

Ivy was born in northern Florida, on the Suwannee River, but as Pa kept looking for better opportunities, the family moved around. The family finally ended up way down in southern Florida in Lemon City (now the Miami neighborhood of Little Haiti) on Biscayne Bay.

Lemon City had one of the first schools in Dade County, but there was one big drawback. There was no high school in Lemon City or anywhere else in southern Florida.

“But I want to be a teacher!” Ivy exclaimed. “How can I ever teach

if I can’t go to high school?”“ Well, now,” Pa said slowly,

“seems to me there is one other way to get a teaching certificate. It would just be for elementary school, though.”

“How do I do it?” asked Ivy, desperate to find a way.

“I believe you can take the teacher’s examination even with-out a high school diploma. If you pass that, you’ll get your certifica-tion,” he said.

With the help of a tutor, 18- year-old Ivy passed the examina-tion for elementary teachers. She was assigned to the New River district in Broward County.

“ Where is that?” Ivy asked Miss Merritt.

“It’s at the settlement of Fort Lauderdale,” said her teacher. “The fort itself was built in 1838 and was the site of several battles during the Second Seminole War.”

“From 1835 to 1842,” said Ivy, glad to show off her knowledge of Florida history. “Is the settlement large?”

“No. In fact, I’m surprised to hear that there are enough chil-dren for a school. I understand it’s very primitive.”

“Oh, that’s no problem,” said Ivy. “How far away is this Fort Lauderdale?”

“It’s about 25 miles by road, but there aren’t any good roads, so you’ll be taking the train.”

And so early one October morn-ing Ivy boarded a northbound train for the tiny town of Fort Lauderdale, where she was met by Edwin King, a trustee of the school.

“Come this way, Miss Cromartie,” he said, striding off. “My pop-boat is right over here at the railroad dock. You’ll be boarding with my family in Fort Lauderdale, and three of my children will be among your pupils.”

“How many pupils are there?” Ivy asked, climbing into the small boat.

“Nine, so far, from five families,” he replied. It was impossible to speak further because he had started the motor in the center of the boat. With no muffler, the motor split the air with its rapid, popping explosions as they made their way down the New River and up Tarpon Creek to the settlement where she would teach.

It’s a good thing I’m used to pioneer life, thought Ivy as she surveyed the settlement with its thick tangle of trees and bushes. This is a perfectly wild community.

“Rather wild and primitive, isn’t it?” said Mr. King, echoing her thoughts. “But it’s quite an im-provement over the paper houses and tents of the old days.”

“Is that unfinished building the schoolhouse?” she asked out loud.

“ Yes, I’m sorry to say,” apolo-gized Mr. King. “ We’ll get it done soon, though, and then school

will begin. But come, our house is down this way.” At the house Mrs. King was warmly welcoming.

“ We’re very happy to have you with us,” she said. “There are so few people here that I’m always delighted to see a new resident.”

“I’m sure I’m going to like it,” said Ivy. That night she wrote a letter to let her family know she had arrived safely and that she was happy to be boarding with the Kings. In the morning she approached Mr. King.

“I’ve written a letter to my family, she said. “How do I mail it?”

“I’ll take you to the trading post. Frank Stranahan owns it. He became our post-master in 1893 after the barefoot mailmen service was discontin-ued.”

“I’m pleased to meet you, Mr. Stranahan.” Eighteen-year-old

Ivy smiled at the postmaster

17October 3, 2020 | GUIDE |

Who Were the Barefoot Mailmen?By 1885 the population of South Florida had grown enough to require mail

service, but because there were no roads, the U. S. Postal Service established

a 68-mile route along the beach. The mail carriers traveled by boat when

necessary, but mostly by foot, going barefoot in the heat, with the canvas mail

sacks slung over their shoulders. Beginning in Palm Beach, the mail carriers

traveled just north of Miami and back, a trip of six days.

Find the emoji that shows how Frank felt about Ivy. It’s hiding somewhere in this magazine. ?

Page 18: C o p y c a t · those who eat differently. One thing I’ll never do, however, is intentionally eat unclean meat (see Leviticus 11). Why does it matter if I chew on a pig’s leg

upon arriving at the trading post.“And I am delighted to welcome

you to our little settlement,” Mr. Stranahan replied. It was the first encounter of what would become a growing friendship.

On the first day of school, kids came with thier parents in pop-boats, but later the families cut down brush to clear paths to the schoolhouse.

With classes in session and the arrival of a few additional students, Ivy did not always have time to col-lect her mail. One evening the ex-plosions of a pop-boat announced a visitor, and moments later Mr. Stranahan stood on the doorstep.

“ You didn’t stop by for your mail today,” he said as he held out a letter, “so I brought it to you.”

“How thoughtful of you,” said Mrs. King, coming up behind Ivy. “Since you’re here, why don’t you stay and take supper with us?” Mr. Stranahan accepted the invitation. During the following days, Ivy noticed a lot of looks and smiles from other people, who often com-mented on the postmaster’s visit.

“I don’t understand it,” Ivy said to Mrs. King. “ Why should everyone be so excited about Mr. Stranahan’s visit?”

“Oh, because we’re talking about an eligible bachelor and a young woman of marriageable age,” answered Mrs. King. Ivy

blushed scarlet.“But it was just a simple kind-

ness!” she declared. Yet even Ivy had to admit there was something more to it when Mr. Stranahan began to come to the schoolhouse at dismissal time and invite her to go fishing with him. She always accepted. Because they had to be very quiet to catch the fish, they left the boat’s engine off and rowed and drifted on the crystal-clear water. Whenever she saw a trout or bream, she would nudge Frank, as he had invited her to call him, and he would steer toward it. Often they caught enough fish to supply supper for the entire King family.

They also attended the com-munity parties and picnics at the Fromberger home on the beach. Occasionally Mr. and Mrs. King, Frank, and Ivy would travel to Palm Beach, where the two cou-ples would ride in the famous two-seater wicker “wheelchairs.” Bicycles were attached behind, and their operators pushed or rode the bikes to propel the chairs.

It was no surprise when Frank proposed to Ivy before school ended.

A you going to your Sabbath School class?” Grandpa questioned 13-year-old

Tristan. Tristan’s dad was working at the hospital, and his mom was home with a headache. Grandpa and Grandma were visiting from North Carolina and had brought him and his four brothers to church.

“ Yeah, I know my way,” Tristan assured his grandfather after helping his grandparents get his brothers into church.

When Tristan went to the Bismarck Seventh-day Adventist Church, he usually went to the same Sabbath School class as his 12-year-old brother, Aidan. However, as he arrived at class and looked in, he noticed that all the other kids were even younger than Aidan. Tristan didn’t want to be in a class with a bunch of little kids, so he decided he’d just go into the adult class.

As he sat there in class, he noticed a few of the adults star-ing his way, and that was a little annoying. The class was kind of boring, but at least he didn’t have to be with a bunch of little babies.

Finally class was over, so he went and sat up in the balcony. He was joined shortly afterward by Aidan.

out an electronic

device and started play-

ing a game.“Aidan, what

are you doing?” whispered Tristan.

“I’m playing a game,” responded his

brother.“Right here in the

church?” Tristan looked incredulous. “ You know

you weren’t supposed to bring that game to church!”

“ Who’s going to know?” asked Aidan as he con-tinued playing his game. “ You wouldn’t tell on me, would you?”

“I wouldn’t need to,” answered Tristan, who had just noticed Grandpa standing behind the two of them. Turning to Grandpa, Tristan said, “I told him he shouldn’t have brought it.”

“Hey, I don’t mind that you brought it to church,” Grandpa said. “Just make sure you put it in your pocket now

and don’t get it out until we’re

on our way home.”Aidan put the game in his pocket.“ Well, I was just wondering

where you guys were in case I might need you,” Grandpa said.

As Grandpa left, Tristan just shook his head. Sometimes he couldn’t believe how immature his brother was! He should have known better than to bring his game to church.

He hoped that Aidan wouldn’t pull the game out and start play-ing it again. He watched him out of the corner of his eye, but it seemed that Aidan was paying attention to the special music.

Shortly after that it was time for the children’s story. Tristan had to admit that he still liked listening to the stories. He watched as his three youngest brothers—Tyler, Asher, and Titus—all went up and got baskets to collect the chil-dren’s offering.

Tristan hoped they’d be all right. Sometimes Asher and Titus were known to run off. Unfor-tunately, this was one of those times!

Shortly after the children started taking up the offering, Grandpa ran up the stairs.

“Hey, guys, I need some help!” Grandpa whispered frantically. “ Titus ran off when he was taking up the offering, and now I can’t find him!”

Immediately Tristan went to help his grandfather find Titus.

As he left the balcony, he looked back. There sat Aidan. Tristan sure wished he’d grow up a little and come and help them look for their youngest brother! But there he sat like a bump on a log, while Tristan went to help Grandpa.

Where would a toddler run off to? Tristan wondered. There were so many places. As he scanned the congregation, his grandpa checked out the bathrooms. The two then looked in the Sabbath School classrooms, in case a door might have been left open. The only one open was the Primary classroom, but Titus wasn’t in there.

“ You haven’t seen Titus, have you?” Grandpa asked the Primary teacher.

“No, I haven’t,” she answered. “I’ll keep my eyes open.”

“Did you check behind the stage?” Tristan asked Grandpa. “Sometimes that door gets left open, and he could even be in the baptistry.”

“I already checked it,” Grandpa replied.

Tristan noticed a worried look on his grandfather’s face. He was con-cerned too. Could his little brother have gone outside? The tempera-ture outside was in the 20s, and there was snow on the ground.

Tristan looked once more at all the pews in the congregation. He looked up on the platform. He looked down the aisles, but he

couldn’t see any sign of Titus!By this time the children’s

story was over, and their other two brothers were sitting with Grandma, so she couldn’t help them look. How he wished Aidan would have come to help them!

Just then, as if in answer to his wish, Aidan came up to him and Grandpa.

“Hey, I found him,” Aidan said, smiling.

“ Where?” asked Tristan and Grandpa.

Aidan led them to the Primary classroom where they had just been. The teacher was there sitting with Titus doing some coloring.

“He came in just after the two of you left,” the teacher said with a smile, “and then Aidan came looking for him and found him here.”

“Oh, praise the Lord!” ex-claimed Grandpa.

Tristan watched as Grandpa then took Titus back into church.

Tristan was relieved that they had found his youngest brother, but he was also relieved that Aidan had stepped up and helped them find Titus!

The story is told of a soldier who was stationed thousands of miles away from his bride-to-be. James would pour his heart out to Sallie on the pages as if

she were right there with him. The only thing that kept the two connected were the letters they would write to each other. The mail was often inconsistent, and there were times Sallie wondered what James was thinking and what he was doing. There were even times she wondered if he still loved her. James wrote faithfully, but often the messages would get lost or misplaced or even misdelivered. On one occasion he spelled out his commitment and love to her with unmistakable passion and certainty. But the letter that could have really deepened their love for each other got lost somehow in the mail room in San Francisco. The loving words were lost in the cracks of the shelves in the post office.

James and Sallie married. On their fiftieth wedding anniversary they talked about how during those years apart they would anxiously wait for the other person to write or call. They reflected on the disappointment when the other person seemed to be silent.

Meanwhile, the old post office was disassembled, and the letter written more than 50 years earlier was discovered by a postal worker named Bob. Bob searched for an updated address and made sure the 50-year-old love letter was delivered. Upon delivery Sallie opened the letter and burst into tears of joy at the words that she read. She checked the date and realized that even during the times of silence James was still communicating his love to her. The message simply never got through.

In what sense is God’s message in Scripture like a love letter to us?

REAL-TIME FAITH STORY

Memory Text: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteous-ness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17).

Our Beliefs, no. 1, The Holy Scriptures: "The Holy Scriptures,

Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given by divine inspiration. The inspired authors spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. In this Word, God has committed to humanity the knowledge necessary for salvation.”

SABBATH Read this week’s Real-Time Faith story above.

Benjamin wants to start studying the Bible regularly and living what it says in his everyday life. He hasn’t done this before, and is a bit skep-tical about being able to be consistent. He doesn’t really know where

to begin or whom to talk to. Most of his friends don’t seem to have an interest in spiritual things. His family goes to church only occasionally. Where does he begin? What would you say to him?

LESSON 2: Bible Study and Prayer

What do these passages say about the Word of God? Why is it important that you study the Bible daily as you seek to understand God’s will for your life? The Bible is God’s love letter to us. The Holy Scriptures contain the revelation of God’s will to us. While God speaks to us through His Word, we can communicate with Him through prayer. He instructs us to “ask,” “seek,” and “knock” (see Matthew 7:7, 8). If we “hunger and thirst” after His righteousness, He will honor our requests as He sees best.

Explain in your own words what the Bible passage in 2 Timothy 3:14-17 means to you. How can you gain wisdom from the Bible?

Bible InsightsWEDNESDAY

Just like spending time with your best friend, you need to spend time communicating with God. In order to keep the relationship alive, you need to take time regularly to nurture the relationship. Friends who do not see each other communicate through letters, text messages, emails, and other ways. How is your communication with God? Are you reading the Bible, His letter for you? What is your response to God as you pray and study the Bible? The more you spend time with God, the more you get to know His will. The natural outcome will be that

you will want to be more like Jesus, and your prayers will be expressions of your trust in God. The fact that He will never stop loving you is right there in His Word (see Jeremiah 31:3; Psalm 139; Isaiah 1; Ephesians 1).

The Bible is full of messages for you, not simply to tell you what to do, but to encourage you and strengthen you (see Romans 15:4). There is a message in Scripture reminding you that you are God’s child. It’s in there. You just have to study, and as you do, God’s Word will change you.

Review the memory text.THURSDAY

The following directions will help you study and understand the Bible and have a prayerful conversation with God.Step 1 Take time to pray quietly and invite God to speak to you. Answers: God's Second Book, p. 3:

“The Do-Nothing Day,” from p. 13

“But we need to get home,” Elly said, ready to cry.

“Then hop into the back of the car,” the man with the gun said. “ We can drive you down to the dam, and you might be able to cross there.”

On one side of the dam the Pend-d’Oreille looked like a calm lake. On the other side, it was like a roaring waterfall turning the huge turbines that generated the electricity for the region. Just looking at it made Elly dizzy, so she stayed as close as possible to the smooth side. But not too close, because she realized that if she took a misstep and fell, she could be sucked into the flume and end up in the turbines.

They were almost across when Dave noticed there was now a chain-link fence on the smooth side.

“Good,” Elly said. “Now I won’t have to worry about falling.”

“No, but we do have to worry about how to get off the dam. That fence goes all the way down to the end and across, and there’s barbed wire on top.”

“Oh, no!” Elly said, sitting down and crying. “Don’t tell me we have

to go all the way back, and then down to the Waneta border. That’s miles and miles. I can’t do that.”

“There’s only one other way,” Dave said. “ We’ll have to climb along the outside of the fence until we get to the end, and pray that we’ll be close enough to dry land then so we can jump off.”

Elly collapsed on the ground when they were finally back on the Canadian side. “Oh, I’ve never been so sore in my life,” she complained. “My arms feel as if they were being pulled out of their sockets, and my feet hurt. The openings in the chain link were so small, I could barely get the tip of one toe in.”

“ Well, rest a bit,” Dave said, sit-ting down too. “Then we still have more than a mile to go before we get home.”

“I don’t know if I can make it,” Elly sighed. “But I do know that I don’t ever want to spend another Sabbath like this.”

“I don’t either,” Dave said. One thing’s for sure: we would

have saved ourselves a lot of trouble if we had run our plan by our parents first.

Death by Deceptionpower points® story

It was springtime, a time when kings went off to war. Israel was at war with the

Ammonites [AM-on-ites]. While the army commander, Joab, and all the forces were laying siege to a city, King David returned to Jerusalem. One evening David couldn’t sleep, so he got up and walked around on the roof of his palace. Across the way he saw a beautiful woman. He wanted to know more about her, so he sent a servant to inquire.

The news came back that she was Bathsheba [bath-SHE-buh], the wife of Uriah [you-RY-uh], one of David’s bravest and most faithful soldiers. David sent a messenger to get her. She came. The king spent time with her, then sent her home.

Before long, Bathsheba sent a message to David. She was preg-nant. David was in trouble. He knew he had done wrong. The law said that death was the punish-ment for a convicted adulterer. Instead of admitting his sin and turning to God, David continued trying to do things his own way. He decided to bring Uriah back from the battle so that he could

spend some nights at home with his wife. Maybe no one would ever know that the child was David’s.

David’s deceitful plan was put into action with a message to Joab. “Send Uriah the Hittite to me,” it said. When Uriah arrived at court, David pretended that he wanted a special report on the war. Uriah gave his report. Then David encouraged him to go home to rest and see his wife.

But Uriah didn’t go home. He stayed outside the palace with the servants and palace guards. When news of this got back to David, he asked, “Haven’t you just come from a military campaign? Why didn’t you go home?”

Uriah, the loyal soldier, respond-ed, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, and my com-mander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”

David tried again to get Uriah to go home. “Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back,” he insisted. So Uriah stayed for another day in the city

and accepted the invitation to eat with the king in the royal palace. During the meal Uriah got drunk. But he didn’t go home the second night, either. David’s deceitful plan had not worked.

In the morning David wrote a message to Joab and sent it to the camp with Uriah. The message said, “Put Uriah out in front, where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.”

Joab did exactly what he was told to do. While the Israelite army had the city under siege, he put Uriah where the fighting was heaviest. Several men were killed, including Uriah.

Once again a message flew back to King David with a swift runner. It contained a full ac-count of the battle.

The messenger gave his mes-sage—all of it. “The men over-powered us and came out against us in the open, but we drove them back to the entrance of the city gate. Then the archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s men died. Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.”

David sent a message back. “Say this to Joab: ‘Don’t let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.’ Say this to encourage Joab” (2 Samuel 11:10-25, NIV).

David thought he had covered up his sin. After a period of mourning for Uriah, Bathsheba became David’s wife. It was not

one single bad decision that led to David’s downfall. The journey that led him to defeat consisted of many small steps in the wrong direction. Instead of trusting completely in God, King David gradually was drawn by the at-tractions of power as well as the sinful practices and customs of surrounding nations. In place of humbly accepting God’s leading in everything he did, David chose to rely on his own human wisdom and power. As a result he sepa-rated himself from God, the only sure source of power.

It is clear from the Bible that “the thing David had done displeased the Lord” (2 Samuel 11:27, NIV).

In the beginning God created humankind in His image. Origi-nally it was natural for humans to obey God and to do only what was right, good, and just. However, as a result of disobedience, sin entered into our world, causing separation between us and God. As a result of sin, the thoughts, feelings, impulses, desires, words, and actions of all human beings were corrupted. The des-tiny of our world appeared hope-less. Yet God did not let us die in our sins. He sought us, found us, and saved us.

What a different course your life can take if you choose to be faithful to God even in the small-est details of your life! Lasting peace and joy are found on the path of obedience to God. He knows what is best for you and has a wonderful plan for your life if you obey Him.
