Pr Leong Fai (centre).

I am glad to have the opportunity of attending a 2-weeks training programme in the Southern Asia Pacific Division office from Apr 23 to May 4. While I was in the Philippines, I heard many thrilling Mission stories besides learning the administrative skills. I would like to share some of these stories with you. There is a choir consisting of 56 members formed by Adventist professionals in Jakarta. Last year, they went to several cities in Indonesia to conduct evangelistic meetings on their own expenses. Through their efforts, they brought in more than 1,800 souls into the church. Pr Abel Bana, an AIIAS student from our Mission, assisted in a 7-day series of evangelistic meetings near the college. On Apr 28, they closed that series of meetings with 100 souls brought into the church. Pr Abel Bana shared with us the secret of the success. He told us that there are many church members actively involved in sharing of the good news and they also conduct Bible studies for those interested. Without the involvement of the members, that series of meetings would not have that number of baptisms. Xia-Yun is another AIIAS student from China, she shared the secret of why the church in Cheng-du, her hometown, is flourishing. Some young professionals resign from their jobs and join the ministry knowing well that the pay is little in comparison. Xia-Yun was a nurse before joining the ministry. Some husbands encourage their spouses to participate in the ministry. Some divorcees put aside their hurt feelings and concentrate their minds in the ministry. They go from house to house, village to village sharing the good news. They conduct Bible studies as well as home-church services. They cheer the poor and sufferings; bring relief to the sick by using natural therapies. When God’s people change their role from audience or advisor to actors (participants) in the ministry, the gospel works would advance mightily. Like the early church, the gospel was spread far and wide in a short period of time. And it spread like wild fire that the authorities claimed that the believers had “filled Jerusalem with their teachings” (Acts 5:28) and “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). May these sayings be fulfilled in our Mission, PEM, in the near future as our members dedicate their lives to spread the gospel!

Praise the Lord for adding Ms Celine, Ms Cythia and Ms Roslee (front row, 3 girls) into the Kulim Church! They were baptized by Pr Theva (front row, left) on Nov 25, 2006. The baptisms were resulted from the Evangelistic Meeting held from Nov 19 to 25, 2006 in the Kulim Church. The theme was to know the “Real Truth” and the revival messages were presented by Pr Theva and myself (front row, right). We also thank the church members of Penang Tamil and Nibong Tebal Churches for witnessing the baptisms.

Praise God for this group of young people who would set aside every Sunday afternoon right after the Adventist Youth Meeting to distribute tracts to the Chinese and Indian community of Nibong Tebal. We are praying that through printed paper, the truth will speak to the people’s hearts.

Vision 4 Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge. Proverbs 23:12, NIV.

In conjunction with Christmas Day in 2006, Nibong Tebal Church organized a thanksgiving service with a number of visitors worshipping with us. We also thank Pr Theva for his prayer of blessing.

YB Tan Cheng Liang (centre) hosted an open house on Dec 25, 2006 for the people in Nibong Tebal. We, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, had the privilege of being the main organizer of the event. Gospel messages were delivered by Pr Theva and children of the church presented a Christmas cantata.

On Dec 2, 2006, the Nibong Tebal Church organized a special service to honour the children for their talents and services rendered to the church. Ellen G White in the ‘Message to Young People’ says, satan misled the young people so that they will not obey God. Thus, it is important for us to guide the children so they will lead a life that glorifies God always.

On Mar 11, the Nibong Tebal youth organized a church outing to one of the local parks. 18 members got together to ponder upon the message, ‘Let us rejoice among the beauty of nature’ presented by myself.

SHARED BY MR TAY CHENG ENG OF PENANG ENGLISH CHURCH: On Mar 25 afternoon, 16 church members from Sungai Petani and Penang gathered at the Penang Adventist Church’s multipurpose hall to attend the PEMICM certification programme. It is to equip members to rally their efforts and unite with their ministers to do God's work. So what is "Small Group Ministries in Local Church"? To help us understand the principles, Pr Terrance Sim (left), the instructor, made use of the PowerPoint presentations to explain it. At the end of the day, the group benefited from being able to organize small groups and are expected to put into use what were learnt. Besides listening to lectures, the students sat for a written, test and practical work/assignment were given out. Everyone looks forward to come back to another PEMICM class entitled “Principles of Chrisitian Leadership and Church Growth”.

from Crash to Riches…a true storyy RichesCrashfrom to …a true stor~ by Ms Becky Rich of Penang English Church ~

RRecently something very exciting has happened which I would like the opportunity to share with you. But first let me briefly introduce myself and share how I came to live in sunny Malaysia. My husband, Marvin, and I are originally from Snoqualmie, Washington (about 25 miles east of Seattle). We are the proud parents of six children. One of our sons met a young nurse from Sabah working at the Penang Adventist Hospital over the internet several years ago. After corresponding with her for some time, he saved up money and came to Penang to visit her. He lived here for six months and upon returning to the USA told us we should retire in Penang. We had thought our retirement wouldn’t happen for quite a few more years as we are supporting our youngest son in college. He has wanted to be a medical missionary since he was eight years old (God told him so in a dream, but that is another story). Anyway, after placing before God in prayer the question of whether we should retire and come to Penang, a series of miraculous events occurred, giving us a definite “open door” that we were indeed supposed to come live here. We arrived on Jan 3, 2005.

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19, NIV. Vision 7

We have since come to love Malaysia, especially Penang, very much. The people have opened their hearts to us and helped us realize that love is to be found everywhere. In Penang we have found the almost constant sunshine to be conducive to exercise, so we walk and ride bicycles that were donated to us everywhere and have enjoyed excellent physical health. On Apr 3, we started out like any other day to enjoy the weather and go for a nice long bike ride. About 20 minutes from home, as we were heading down a slope at a fairly fast pace, I heard a loud “pop” and looked down at my front tire. My last thought was “oh, no” and I saw the tire coming off the rim. It had exploded, probably from a puncture. The next thing I remembered was hearing a voice say to me, “Madam, madam, you are hurt very badly. Is there someone I can call on your mobile phone?” I don’t recall seeing the person who was talking to me, so I must not have opened my eyes, but I do remember telling him to call my husband, who, because he was quite a distance in front of me had not seen the accident. Another passing motorist stopped my husband and told him there had been an accident. He also received the phone call from the man who spoke to me just as he was almost back to the accident site. He saw the man holding me, cradling my neck carefully and even though the man was not much bigger than I, he effortlessly lifted me and placed me in his car to take me to the hospital. I woke up once in the car on the way, but passed out again before we arrived. My next memory was in the emergency room as the doctors were questioning me, trying to find out the extent of my injuries. I must have landed on my right side as I had bruises, abrasions and swelling on my temple, eye, and bone below the eye, shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, all on the right side. My left side was almost untouched except for a few bruises on that knee. While I still have no memory of the exact sequence of events I do know the emergency

room doctor sent me for x-rays of all those areas, including a CT scan due to my loss of consciousness and memory loss. I also remember him asking me if “anything else hurt” and upon telling him that my neck hurt “just a little” he did an MRI of that, as well. Nothing was broken except my neck. The MRI showed a break in the 2nd cervical vertebrae. That is the part of our neck a person uses to turn it from side to side. The doctor told me I was very lucky to be alive. He said if the bone in my neck had shifted even a tiny bit I would have been permanently paralyzed or dead. I spent five days in the hospital, and was fitted with a “halo vest system”. My hair was shaved off entirely for hygienic reasons because with this vest on, a shower cannot be taken. The vest does not come off. While in the hospital it slowly dawned on me how much I owed my life to Christ. How was it that while being lifted into a car, and driven to the hospital, that bone in my neck did not shift? Was the man who picked me up an angel or did God send an angel to support my

neck while he lifted me? Only in Heaven will I receive an answer to that question. In the meantime, it also dawned on me that ALL of us owe our lives to Christ. On Calvary He paid the ultimate price for each of us so that we can have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. Jesus also said that He came to give us life more abundantly,

John 10:10. What are we doing with this life He has granted us? Colossians 3:1 and 2 says “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on things on the earth.” How often do we complain and moan or groan when adverse things happen to us? Let me continue to share what God has shown me through all this. James 1:2-4 tells us, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” Incredible words!!! Can we find joy in our trials? You bet, my friends! While I lay in hospital, after my hair was shaved off, I had fun and charged admission to all who entered my room. The nurses provided me with a box and even passed it around among themselves to contribute to it. I told everyone who entered that the admission fees I collected were to be donated to the hospital cancer fund. We raised RM130.00 for it. God gave me the ability to be able to find joy even in the midst of all that had happened.

Ms Becky Rich with her ‘halo’.

Ms Becky Rich before her crash.

My doctor says I will wear my “halo” for six to eight weeks until the break in my neck has mended. Not only do I experience no pain, but all my bruising and swelling are already gone, less than three weeks since the accident occurred. Also, I am already walking again all over Penang. I jokingly tell friends who ask how I am doing that except for this funny new hairdo, you would never know I had experienced any problems. God’s many promises are there in His word. He has promised to always be with us, no matter what happens. He has promised to bless us and give us all that we need. It is our privilege to have His word, the Bible to read, and learn of these many promises. In the Bible, we will find the way to eternal life, and to abundant life. God says, “All things work together for good to those who love God”, Romans 8:28. Since our remaining time on this earth is short, let us make haste to seek God daily through prayer, and reading His word. Let us

strengthen ourselves by learning and believing His promises.

Vision 8 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5, NIV.

Ms Chan Ern Hwee was baptized by Pr Chai on Dec 30, 2006.

Dr Lee

Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength; we will sing and praise your might. Psalm 21:13, NIV. Vision 9

They said they would allow me to further my studies in USA (my greatest wish then) after I served as a missionary through the 1000MM. Editor: Did you regret joining the 1000MM? Daniel: NO! In fact, I would encourage all the young people to join the 1000MM!!! Editor: What is so good about the 1000MM? Daniel: There were lots of good things that happened in my life while I served in Bicol! I experienced the power of a prayerful life (I would get up at 5am to have devotion); I made a lot of sincere friends; I learnt how to be independent; I am no more a computer-addict as I used to be on the computer all day long (I only get to go to the city once a month to access the internet in Bicol); I learnt to eat healthily (I appreciate vegetarian food now); and I learnt the importance of dressing-up appropriately for church (I used to dress casually and gel my hair like a durian, having spikes, and extended length in some parts of the hair).

The 2007 ASI Division-wide Convention will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from Aug 10-13. The main speaker is Mr Danny Shelton, President of the Three Angels Broadcasting Network.

Editor: What did you have to do as a missionary? Daniel: We (other missionaries and I) helped the farmers in their agricultural work, made regular visitations to the farmers’ homes and studied the Bible with them. Editor: What was the result? Daniel: 5 farmers got baptized! Praise God! Editor: What was the most unforgettable experience you had in Bicol? Daniel: Typhoon Durian. Our site was struck by the typhoon and we had no electricity for 3 months! Being a city-boy, it was really difficult to adapt to such conditions, but I thank God I managed to live with it! Editor: What would you like to say to our readers as we conclude our interview? Daniel: JOIN THE 1000MM AND EXPERIENCE LIFE!!! Daniel is a church member of the PJ English Church, and currently he is in the Philippines to further his graduate studies as a Dentist. Kindly contact your pastor if you are interested to join the 1000MM!

~ A Medical Mission Trip to the “Land below the Wind” by Dr Jonathan Babbit ~

II was perusing the World Atlas trying to pin-point an area for my next medical mission trip when I glanced over at my wife, Miriam, and then it hit me, “Sabah!!!” I exclaimed, “We’re going to Sabah!” It was the obvious choice, my wife is a Sabahan, and I had yet to set foot on her hometown, and this would be the perfect opportunity. Through guidance and advice from my father-in-law, Dr David Chung, a former government officer in the Ministry of Finance for Sabah, I began mapping out the trip. He suggested key contacts such as Dr Alvin Chong - a physician in Kota Kinabalu who works closely with the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Mission and the Malaysian Ministry of Health. Through Dr Chong, I discovered that the SDA Mission in Sabah operates mobile medical units to travel into remote areas to provide healthcare, which coincides with the objective of my mission trip, and that is to provide healthcare and health education to the people in rural villages, and access to basic healthcare is limited for people who live in remote “kampungs” tucked away deep inland in dense jungles and mountains. Travel to the villages took between 3-10 hours via 4x4 vehicles. The core team consisted of a retired yet untiring nurse Ellen, Por Mahani (translator/off-road driver), Nasol Gabu (ADRA Coordinator), and myself (Emergency Medical doctor from the University of Illinois at Chicago). It was a special privilege for me to share this incredible missionary experience with my wife, Miriam, and her parents – Dr David & Amy Chung, who joined me for several day trips. The group worked together to provide services such as clinics, distribution of medication, educational health presentations and Bible ministries. On average, we saw between 70-200 patients a day. Lectures comprised of basic instruction in personal hygiene, treatment of diarrhea, smoking cessation, and reproductive health. I am fortunate to have served as a missionary in countries such as Nepal, Zambia, Chad, Mexico, Guatemala, and now Malaysia. I am acutely aware of the challenges associated with medical mission work and am eager to continue tackling them. I

understand the gravity of healthcare crisis facing many populations and have made it my personal goal to do whatever I can to confront and improve these healthcare issues. Like our Heavenly Father, I strive to serve the underserved of the world, and will do my utmost to represent Him, and His mission.

*FOODS FOR THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

TThe brain only requires two substances to function: oxygen and glucose. However, many other nutrients are needed for higher functions such as thought, memory, and self -control.

Preparation and Use of Cashew which is one of the

most prized nuts • Roasted nut. These are

eaten with or without salt, much like peanuts or any other nut.

Preparation and Use of Oats

which balance the nerves and lower cholesterol

• Flakes. This is the best way

to eat oats and take advantage of all its nutritive properties. They may be prepared boiled in vegetable broth.

• Porridge (oatmeal). This

may be prepared in the following manner: place four spoonfuls of oat flakes to soak. The following morning, boil ½ litre of water and add the soaked flakes. Cook for 15 minutes over low heat. Serve with honey. Soya milk may be added.

• ‘Muesli’. Oat flakes are

one of the basic ingredients in ‘muesli’ as breakfast food, along with other grains, almonds, hazelnuts, raisins, etc.

Preparation and Use of Brazil

Nuts that are rich in vitamin B1

• Raw. This is the way Brazil nut is usually eaten. They must be well chewed, as is the case with all oil-bearing nuts.

• Toasted. 5 to 10 minutes in

the oven is usually sufficient to turn them golden brown and give them a pleasant taste.

Preparation and Use of Lettuce which calms

the nerves and satisfies the stomach

• Raw. This is the best way to

enjoy its freshness and pleasant taste.

• Cooked. The toughest

leaves can be cooked like any other green.

Preparation and Use of Pine

Nut which is a good nut for the brain

• Raw. Raw pine nuts have

a very pleasant flavour. A handful of them may be eaten if well chewed. They must be stored in a well-sealed container because they become rancid easily.

• Variety of culinary

preparations. They can be used as a condiment because of their pleasant flavour and high nutritional value.

Preparation and Use of

Almond which invigorates the nervous system and reduces cholesterol

• Raw. Almonds, freshly

picked from the tree and shelled can be eaten just as they are. Fresh almonds are more digestible than dried almonds.

• Dried. Some time after

they have been picked, the moisture content is reduced and they become hard. They can be eaten raw, very well chewed, or lightly toasted. In this case, they lose some of their vitamins, but are easier to chew and digest.

• Almond milk. This is usually

prepared by adding water to almond cream.

17. 17. Spiritual Gifts and Ministries: God bestows upon all members of His church in every age spiritual gifts which each member is to employ in loving ministry for the common good of the church and of humanity. Given by the agency of the Holy Spirit, who apportions to each member as He wills, the gifts provide all abilities and ministries needed by the church to fulfill its divinely ordained functions. According to the Scriptures, these gifts include such ministries as faith, healing, prophecy, proclamation, teaching, administration, reconciliation, compassion, and self-sacrificing service and charity for the help and encouragement of people. Some members are called of God and endowed by the Spirit for functions recognized by the church in pastoral, evangelistic, apostolic, and teaching ministries particularly needed to equip the members for service, to build up the church to spiritual maturity, and to foster unity of the faith and knowledge of God. When members employ these spiritual gifts as faithful stewards of God's varied grace, the church is protected from the destructive influence of false doctrine, grows with a growth that is from God, and is built up in faith and love. (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:9-11, 27, 28; Eph. 4:8, 11-16; Acts 6:1-7; 1 Tim. 3:1-13; 1 Peter 4:10, 11.)
