Consider the Blues; a very simple genre of music, consisting mainly of three chords in a twelve bar repeating format. How can one create under such a restrictive structure? Well, is Keb Mo’s sound the same as Eric Clapton’s? Bonnie Raitt just like B.B. King? No. Somehow, talented people put their own stamp on the most basic things. Now consider Napa Valley Cabs; same grapes, same sun and with variation, same dirt. Let’s explore the wonderful differences between a handful of Napa wines and winemakers, and maybe find that elusive theme, that haunting melody we’ve all been chasing. Yesterday, the golf course opened. It was 50 degrees. Hurray! Hold on, not so fast. If you know me, you know I had a total knee replacement last year in December. I’ve certainly tried to tell everyone. I want all the sympathy I can ferret out of each of you……and a gift of a couple added strokes on my handicap.

So, in the interest of exercise, and my golf game, I thought it a good idea to walk a few holes as soon as I saw the flags come out. I slung my clubs over my shoulder and stepped out my back door onto number 12 tee. I played 4 holes. I lost 3 golf balls, two in the water on 14 and one in the water on 15. I hit the maintenance building roof on 12 and put a ball out of bounds on both 13 and 15. My ball was completely afraid of the hole when I putted and stayed as far away from the cup as was possible. Needless to say, par was only a passing

thought. I had a good nine-hole score in only four holes. And limped, both mentally and physically, back to the house. What’s my point in relating this sad, demoralizing story to you? I had fun. It’s Spring! The golf course is open and in pretty

good shape. I expect it will be in great shape by the time you read this. Get out. Enjoy. And as a reminder, the Member/Guest tournament is coming up soon. Sign up and have the time of your life. Show your guest what Glenmoor is all about. Win or lose, I promise you will have a wonderful three days. If that doesn’t work for you, you have plenty of other club events to try. Now, if you will excuse me, my knee and my golf swing need some attention.

Periodically, I like to feature outstanding Glenmoor employees in this column. In my forty plus years in the club industry, I can honestly say that I have not seen a greater group of people working for one organization. Not only do they have an overwhelming desire to serve and extensive training and experience, their longevity at Glenmoor is well above industry averages. The combined Glenmoor experience of the senior staff alone is approaching two hundred years! This kind of institutional memory is truly invaluable.

Even though it seems like our Food & Beverage Director, Randy May, has been with Glenmoor forever, he is actually one of the newer members of the Glenmoor leadership team with approximately five years on board. That doesn’t mean that he is not experienced. Randy’s credentials are of the highest caliber as an early graduate of the University of Akron’s Hospitality Management program. He spent nearly thirty years with Club Corp, ultimately as national service director where he was responsible for front of the house operations for clubs all around the United States. He developed and implemented standards and training programs, opened numerous new properties and was a manager’s worst nightmare when inspection time came around! He is universally respected in our industry for his skills and accomplishments.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and, now, working with Randy for over thirty years. For my first fifteen years at Glenmoor, I kept trying to find a Randy May clone. Providence brought us the real deal five years ago. His quality standards are second to none, his work ethic is something we should all strive for and his dedication to growing and training his staff is a model for any business. In addition, Randy has brought back an extensive tableside menu to the Black Heath. This rarely seen signature service has become extremely popular with Members. Additionally in just the few months since he has taken over Wine Society responsibilities, attendance at events has grown wonderfully and accountability has never been better. We are truly proud to count Randy May as one of Glenmoor’s key staff members.

Manager’s Message by Myron Vernis, General Manager

There are so many wonderful events in May to let us know that summer is on its way! We start the month off with some summer fashion trends as Glenmoor Members and their guests enjoy the Lilly Pulitzer Fashion Show on May 4th, and by the end of the month we find ourselves at the pool at last! Most of you probably remember last year’s TGIF kick-off at the pool, I know I do, because the weather was perfect, the food was fabulous and the music was great! Join us this year on Friday, May 24th for our TGIF Kickoff at the Pool, its a great way to celebrate the beginning of summer! Don’t forget to check the Glenmoor facebook page and the Glenmoor blog for pictures and information regarding upcoming events and feel free to post a few of your own pics on our facebook page or send them to me at [email protected]! By the way, you can now text your reservations to 330.704.3327. See you all at the Club!

Membership Corner by Gretchen Fernandez, Membership Director

May is upon us which traditionally is our most active month in Membership, and why not!?! The golf course is in full swing, the pool and tennis are opening, and it is the perfect time to be a Glenmoor Member! (Although, I’d have to say any time of year is a perfect time to be a Glenmoor Member!)

In any case, I do hope you’ll take the opportunity this month to invite a friend to explore Membership at Glenmoor. It is a great way to enhance your club experience.

You also may have heard that we have a New Junior Golf Membership for young professionals under the age of 40. Please give some thought to people you know in this age group who would benefit from being a Golf Member at Glenmoor. We have planned “Beer and Gear” on Tuesday, May 7th. It will

be a Beer Tasting and Club Demo Party on the Driving Range, geared towards giving our “under 40’s” a taste of the Glenmoor experience (pun intended!). Call me today if you have someone in mind you’d like to invite!!!

New for 2013 are scheduled special Guest Days and Guest Tournaments. We know it is important for our Members to bring friends and clients to play golf and we have created some events and tournaments to provide a variety of formats for everyone. The informal Guest Day Events to include golf, gifts, prizes, and lunch are listed below. A more structured event will take place in the fall and will include two days of golf, lunch, dinner, tournament format, and awards is also listed below:

Spring Guest Day – Wednesday, May 1 Corporate Guest Day – Wednesday, August 21 Summer Guest Day – Wednesday, July 17 Chairman’s Guest Event – Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14

As we move from our spring schedule to our standard summer hours, it is important to take note of a few time changes in the Golf Shop. The Shop will be open Tuesday thru Friday 7:30am to 6:00pm, and 7:00am to 6:00pm weekends; with Mondays open from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. The range will close at 7pm sharp seven days of the week for the 2013 season. We will continue to open the golf course and practice facility at noon on Mondays provided that we do not have any functions scheduled on a particular Monday. Our summer service personnel return with all of the faces you have come to recognize over the past few seasons in the locker room, bag room, and in the Golf Shop.

With only a month before our children begin summer break, it is that time to think about the Junior Golf League at Glenmoor. The very popular junior league is open to all children and grandchildren of Social and Golf Members of Glenmoor. The league is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 5 and will continue on Thursday mornings. For more information on the junior league, please contact Meg Glass at [email protected]. For more information on these and other programs, please contact me in the Golf Shop or by email at [email protected]. We hope that these and other benefits add to your value as a Golf Member at Glenmoor.

Greetings from the Golf Shop by Shawn Grimes

Turf Talk by Rob MillerNow that May is finally here, that means it’s time to start enjoying not only your home patios but the patio

here at Glenmoor. This year the patio at Glenmoor is going to have a new look. For starters, last fall all the sod and small weeping pine that were on the hill side by the snack bar window were removed. This area, that was somewhat bland in the past, will now be a flower bed that will be planted with many different varieties of flowers that will add a visual appeal and color to the patio area. Secondly, all the existing sod will be removed, soil brought in to level any low areas and reseeded. In conjunction with this, an irrigation system will be added to keep the new turf looking good as well as watering the Chef’s expanded herb garden. (You’re welcome, Chef!) Finally, the upper terrace area is going to have a new patio installed which will be another area to enjoy during parties or business gatherings and will give a nice overview of the pool.

Team Member of the MonthCongratulations to Jeff Hite, our newest Team Member of the Month. Jeff joined the

Glenmoor Team as a valet in June of 2012. He has excelled in this position and can be found assisting in many other areas of the Club as well.

When he is not at Glenmoor providing excellent Member and Guest services, Jeff enjoys playing and watching sports and being outdoors. Jeff’s positive attitude and willingness to get things done will surely help him achieve his goals of owning his own business and flying his private jet to warm areas of the world. Be sure to congratulate Jeff when you see him around the Club.

Did you know? What’s Cooking Chef Meeker?

Dining News by Randy May, Food and Beverage Director

Our TGIF celebrations start this month on the patio every Friday at

6pm. This is a great opportunity for live music, great food and friends to share

on the patio. Every week we have a new food theme with different styles of food

from all over the world.

Last year we had 15 weeks of different menus which featured seven

different countries, six different regions of the United States and two different

barbecue menus. We had around 1700 Members visit us on the patio;

hope to see you this year.

I would like to start out and say how nice it was to see 500 people attend our Easter Celebration. It was a great time and everyone looked so nice. So, if you liked our menu at Easter, you will love what we are planning for Mother Day, May 12th. A bountiful buffet of fresh fruits, meats and vegetables. If I don’t see you, or I am too busy making quiche in the back, Happy Mother’s Day to all this year.

Well, the Loch Bar is at it again. We are adding something new to the Loch Bar Menu this May. As you may know small plates are all the

rage so we are having are own Tapas menu on the new menu, with a chance to order just a bite or two. I have had a lot of requests for such items so we will give it a shot, please let me know what you think.

Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] with a question for our next newsletter.

April showers bring more than just May flowers! They bring a slew of Member Events to Glenmoor including our annual Kentucky Derby party in the Loch Bar on Saturday, May 4; Celebrity Maitre d’ with the Beebes on Thursday, May 9; Mother’s Day Brunch in the Chapel on Sunday, May 12; Napa Valley Blues Wine Tasting on Thursday, May 16 and last, but certainly not least, the opening of the Pool on Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, May 25. We will also be celebrating the first of many TGIF’s as we host the first one of the season at the Pool to celebrate the pool’s official opening.

Summer Hours begin officially on Wednesday, May 1. As a reminder, breakfast will once again be served in Scot’s Grille every morning from 6:30 -10:30am with the exception of Monday breakfast which will be served

in the Loch Bar as usual. Lunch will also be served in Scot’s starting at 11:00am. See complete details in the newsletter with regard to Scot’s Summer hours.

The Pool will officially open Saturday, May 25 at 10:00am and will be open seven days a week until 8:00pm. If you did not get a chance to visit the Pool last year, please do so and experience all of the food and service amenities that we are offering. We have definitely added a “splash” of pizzazz in this area of the Club.

We have a few new employees that you will have the opportunity to meet, not the least of which is Scott Owens, our latest bartender addition to the Loch Bar. Speaking of the Loch Bar, we have made some great additions to the “Wine by the Glass” list here at the Club. Please enjoy the following wines by the glass anywhere in the Club - Mandolin Chardonnay 2010, Monterey Vineyards; Cliff Creek Merlot 2007, Oregon and Trapiche Malbec-2010, Argentina.

Attention all Lucky Day recipients: We have made a wonderful revision to the “Lucky Day” amenity here at the Club. From now on, if it is your “Lucky Day”, you have a choice. You may enjoy two complimentary dinner entrees in Scot’s Grille or if it is on Monday - Saturday, enjoy your dinner in Loch Bar or Black Heath with a $25 food and beverage credit applied to your dinner purchase.

The Bertram Inn Member Rewards Program is off to a great start! We sent out over $500 in Glenmoor gift cards to the participating Members at the end of the 1st quarter. Thank you to all the Members that take advantage of this rewarding Membership perk.

It’s not too late for you to start earning your Member Rewards! All you have to do is reserve overnight rooms at the preferred Member Rate for your family, friends and colleagues at The Bertram Inn at Glenmoor. Now, is the perfect time to reserve overnight rooms. The Member Guest Tournament is quickly approaching, graduations, family reunions and weddings. Whatever the occasion may be we are here to provide the best service and quality to your Guest.

I’m very excited for the Junior Tennis Team this season, as we are revamping the format of the league to encourage more match participation. Please call me for more information on the format. Even if your children have never played tennis before, they can still participate on the tennis team. It is a great learning experience for players of all levels. Remember also that grandchildren are able to participate in the junior tennis programs: Tiny Tots (3 – 5 yrs.), Pee Wees (6 – 8 yrs.), and Tennis Team (8 and up). Please be aware that the junior programs are starting a week early this year, the week of June 4th. Stop by early to sign up your children or grandchildren.

Ladies, please note that the Ladies Member Guest will be on June 19th at 9am. The first Margarita Mixer will be on June 21st. I’m giving everyone plenty of time to save the date so hope to see all of you there! Men’s Night will start at Glenmoor at 6pm, Wednesday, June 5th.

Below is the list of drills available starting May 15th: Ladies Drills: Wednesdays from 9 – 11am Men’s Drills: Thursdays from 6 – 7pm
