Prayers of the faithful Policy and Book of the sick and deceased

Each week we bring to Mass the people in our lives - friends, neighbors and family - who are in need of our prayers. People often ask us to pray for them, or we are simply aware of someone who needs our prayer. There are a great number of people in our lives we can pray for and we pray for them at every liturgy. We place them on the altar with our prayer as we hope they do for us. The names of parishioners and close relatives of parishioners are announced during the Prayers of the Faithful. The purpose of announcing these names is to notify the community of its members, or close relatives of its members, who are sick or who have died. The rare exception to this would be names of individuals who are of some significance to the larger community, i.e. a politician or some other world leader. Please continue to call the rectory with the names of family members who are ill or deceased. BOOK OF THE SICK AND DECEASED We invite you to write the names of friends, neighbors and co-workers who are sick or who have died in our Book of the Sick and Deceased. This book is at the entrance of the St. Joseph Shrine in the church. Names may be added throughout the week. Please list names only. Any special intentions or prayer requests can still be written in the Book of Special Intentions located at the Shrine of the Blessed Mother. The Book of the Sick and Deceased is carried in procession at every weekend liturgy during our Offertory and placed on the altar. In this way those individuals who have asked us to pray for them are placed on the altar along with our communal prayers.

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodWe are three weeks into the New Year and it seems like a good time to see how we are doing with our New Year's Resolutions. Are we still eating healthier? Are we still exercising a little more? Are we still spending a little extra time in prayer? I would guess that many of us would answer "no".The problem with New Year's Resolutions is that they generally require us to spend some of our God given gift of Time doing something that we are not accustomed to doing. To eat healthier we need to take extra time to buy nutritious food and prepare it properly. Exercising more requires us to jog further or spend more time at the gym. Praying means we need to carve out time for being with God. I suspect the primary excuse for failed resolutions is the lack of time.A year or so ago I read an article on prayer by a Franciscan Priest. He said that when people say they don't have time to pray it's usually not really a time issue but it is a faith issue. He went on to say that if we truly believe that doing something will change us and make us better, we will almost always find time to do it. As I said he was talking specifically about prayer, but I can see how it fits in with almost every aspect of us becoming healthier, happier and better stewards of our God given gifts. For me, I know that a salad at lunch is better than a burger. However, I also believe that this one burger won't make any difference in my quest for a healthier lifestyle. I know that I should spend more time in prayer but at times I have doubts that it works (even though I've seen it work in my family life). For many of us the underlying reason we don't spend more time in prayer is not the lack of time, but the lack of faith that God is listening. The Bible tells us to "pray without ceasing" and to "ask and we shall receive". Fortunately, the New Year is only three weeks old and we can re-resolve to be healthier, fitter, faithful people.

Please contact us, S t e w a r d s h i p @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s . o r g , with questions or comments on this article or about Stewardship.

Stephen Ministry and Preventive CareMost people call for a Stephen Minister when they’re going through a life crisis. But did you know that a Stephen Minister can also act as preventive care when you can see a major life event coming? When you have an approaching medical procedure, a baby due to arrive, an approaching retirement, or a last child going away to college - these are all reasons to speak with a Stephen Minister so you’ll have someone on your side to confidentially help you work through these big life events. Stephen Minsters are trained to be good listeners, to support you through your time of challenge, to help you identify the source of your problem, but most importantly, to invite Jesus into the problem solving and healing process. Stephen Ministers do the caring and God does the curing. Want to know more? Call our Stephen Ministry confidential phone line at 310-545-8244. Deacon Dick and Patti Williams will meet with you to explore whether a Stephen Minister may be a good fit for you.

Every 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday of the month a group from American Martyrs goes to the Catholic Worker Skid Row to help serve at the Soup Kitchen. The following items are needed on an ongoing basis and can be dropped off at the Parish Center offices.

∙ Shampoo & conditioner (all sizes) ∙ Bar soap / liquid hand soap ∙ Body lotion ∙ Toothbrushes and toothpaste (all sizes, all brands) ∙ Large plastic containers for food (16 oz. or larger)

See photo and notes re type of plastic below.

Plastic #5 – PP (Polypropylene) Plastic #5 is one of the safer plastics to look for. It is typically found in yogurt containers and cottage cheese containers. Polypropylene has a high melting point, and so is often chosen for containers that must accept hot liquid. These containers work best for the hot meals that are served at the Catholic Worker as the main dish.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Speak up with concerns about a child’s environmentParent and caregiver observations can help protect a child in danger, and you should know when it’s important to speak up. Although it may be awkward to approach a parent you do not know, if you have witnessed a scenario where the child is in danger of physical or mental abuse, it is your responsibility to act in that child’s best interest. In addition to reporting concerns, think about any practical solutions that can help keep kids safe pending an investigation and solution. FAIR TRADE RUG EVENTS AT TEN THOUSAND VILLAGES

Thanks to the generous time American Martyrs volunteers have donated to our non-profit store since our opening in June, 2014, upholding the mission to provide a place to sell items from artisans from more than 30 developing countries and insure they receive a fair wage. At our first rug event in 2016, we sold enough to provide 15 Pakistani families who weave rugs a living wage for an entire year. We hope to support even more this year.See photos of the rugs at r u g s . t e n t h o u s a n d v i l l a g e s . c o m

There’s a new Author in our Parish - Donna Ennis!Donna Ennis, who for over 20 years has facilitated the Contemplative Prayer faith program at American Martyrs and who has been a spiritual director for even more years, has published her first book, “The Ground of God: Contemplative Prayer for the Contemporary Spirit”. The book is a culmination of her many years of commitment and devotion to this special prayer experience. We congratulate Donna on a work that truly is the fruit of a lifetime of helping others to deepen their relationship to God.

“Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Ex 3:5

From the Introduction:“For one who is new to contemplation, ease and simplicity of thought gradually open one up to the experiential knowledge that living a balanced life is within reach. For one who has contemplative prayer experience the ancient, stable and holy ground of contemplative prayer becomes known with affirming clarity, depth and simplicity in new ways. Living a prayer filled, scripture based life leads the reader to ask the question: What on earth is so commanding? Who is in command?”

The book is available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble in paperback and Kindle.

There will be Blessing of the Throats on the feast of St. Blaise, Friday February 3,

following the 12:10pm and 5:00pm Masses.

St. Blaise and the Blessing of Throatsby Fr. Larry RiceMany Catholic saints have unique customs associated with their feast days. One of the more unusual is the tradi-tion of blessing throats on the feast day of St. Blaise, bish-op and martyr. What we know of St. Blaise is from Christian tradition and legend. He was a physician and became the bishop of Sebastea in historical Armenia (modern-day Turkey). According to one account, in the year 316, the governor of Cappadocia and Lesser Armenia was commanded by the Emperor Licinius to round up all the Christians and put them to death. As bishop, Blaise was being led away to prison, a woman brought to him her son, who was choking on a fish bone. The bishop prayed, and the boy was miraculously healed. Later, refusing to renounce his faith, Blaise was beaten with iron combs and beheaded. Today, nearly 1700 years later, the faith of St. Blaise is remembered on February 3, when we have our throats blessed. Two candles are crossed over the throat (unlit candles, for obvious reasons!), and the priest prays,

Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (Book of Blessings, no. 1634)

In traditional iconography, St. Blaise is often depicted with iron combs and crossed candles. He’s the patron saint of wool traders, wildlife, and the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Fr. Rice is vocations director for the Paulist Fathers.
