LITURGY FOR THE CHIEF ELDERSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST

(Sitting)

Lord, save your people, and bless your heritage; Be our Shepherd, and bear us up forever.

PILGRIMAGE

Welcome among your flock of grace with joyful acclamation,

our Shepherd whom we now confess! Come, feed your congregation.

We own the doctrine of your cross to be our sole foundation;

accept from every one of us the deepest adoration.

Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers. All things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

He is the head of his body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything,

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Lord Jesus Christ, you care for and guide the church universal, yet in mercy you were pleased to accept the office of Chief Elder of our Unity.

Help us always to remember that the life in our congregations is not the fruit of our own piety but of your love, which constrains us to love one another.

3

Thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep. I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak. I will feed them with justice.

Good Shepherd, we thank you that you have redeemed us as first fruits for God. Help us to follow wherever you lead.

Through the testimony of Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit, God calls each individual personally into the fellowship of his flock. God leads each member of the Body of Christ to the recognition of sin and to the acceptance of the redemption achieved by Christ.

We recognize the Word of the Cross as the center of Holy Scripture and of all preaching of the Gospel, and we know our primary mission is to bear witness to this joyful message. We ask our Lord for power never to stray from this. Lord Jesus, you entered into this world’s misery to bear it and to overcome it. Forgive us when we have failed to follow you in serving your people. Help us to know that like your love, this service knows no bounds. Ever anew point out to us the way to reach our neighbors, opening our heart and hand to them in their need.

Thus says the Lord, our Chief Elder: Do not fear, for I am with you. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.

In faith, we follow Christ, in song and celebration. He leads us to the cross, the price of our salvation.

We cannot find His path through reason and strength alone.  Belief provides the light that guides us to His throne.

By faith we learn to trust the deeds of one another. We bind ourselves with love for sister and for brother.

Our family of God works hand in hand to grow our congregation strong and Christ's great truth to know.

With faith we look beyond this day into tomorrow. Christ's promise is for joy and strength in time of sorrow.

We witness our belief to ev'ry race and clan. In faith, we follow Christ, in song and celebration.

With ev'ry clan and race we share God's loving grace.

QUIET MEDITATION AND PRAYER

COMMUNION MEDITATION

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, be with you all. Amen.

Hear the promise of our Lord: Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.

Christ also says: I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

Hear also his invitation: Come to me, all who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Let us therefore come to our merciful and compassionate God in silent prayer, confessing our sins and failures, expressing our fears and anxieties, offering our needs, and affirming our hope in Jesus Christ our Savior.

(Silent Prayer)

Gracious God, we thank you for creating us in your image, for your goodness to us in times past and your love for us today and every day. Most of all, we thank you for coming to us in Jesus Christ our Lord, who took our human nature upon himself, sharing our loneliness, weakness, and suffering, that we might have eternal life. We recall with gratitude Christ's life, death, and resurrection for our salvation, and rejoice in his promise: I am with you always, to the end of the age.

6

Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and cup, that they may be for us the sacramental body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that we and all your church may be nourished and built up in our faith in Christ.

Live in us, that the life we live here shall be lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave himself for us. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth,

as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

(All partake together.)

(Silent Prayer)

By your divine presence, By the holy sacraments, By all the merits of your life, sufferings, death, and resurrection, Bless and comfort us, gracious Lord and God.

7

In the same way, after supper our Lord Jesus Christ took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.

(All partake together.)

(Silent Prayer)

Christ, the Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Grant to us your peace.  Amen.

Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death,  Until he comes.

GOUDIMEL

Eat and rest at this great feast, then to serve him freely go,

as it is for pilgrims fit, as disciples ought to do.

We, when Jesus we shall see coming in his majesty,

shall the marriage supper share, if we his true followers are.

The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace; (Sung) In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Brunson Angel Tree Christmas is right around the corner and that means that it’s time for our 3rd Annual Angel Tree supporting Brunson Elementary School! Throughout the years, we have been able to increase the number of children who will receive a present when getting one from someone else might not happen.

9

The Missions Committee is excited to be able to help even more kids and we know that Calvary will be able to knock it out of the park again! Instructions can be found at the link below or by scanning the QR code on your ornament.

Christmas Cards We are unveiling for this holiday season a set of four Christmas notecards featuring our two Christmas windows, the Sanctuary door in holiday raiments, and Sean McNamara’s illustration of our lovefeast meal. These will be $5 dollars for a set of four and are available for reservation by emailing Jacob at [email protected].

Lovefeast in a BoxTM for 2021 If you’ve been at Calvary for a while, you might remember the Lovefeast-in-a-Box™ program launched by our Sisters Fellowship several years ago. The idea is to connect our faraway friends and family with Christmas Eve lovefeasts by shipping dressed candles, coffee fixins, Moravian cookies, and the worship ode in tidy packages, so that long-distance and stay-at-home worshippers can participate with us via livestream on Christmas Eve. In light of the continuing pandemic, Lovefeast-in-a-Box™ continues to be a great way to help participants celebrate Christmas Eve safely.

Visit Lovefeastinabox.com to place an order. You can purchase individual or double boxes, or you can order a family pack (serves 6). Boxes can be picked up in person (12/12 & 12/14) or shipped (via USPS on 12/6). Orders must be placed by November 15.
