,llState v. Michael Flash Tr2017-109002, Judge Pro Tern James Morrow, White Tank Justice Court -Jury Trial-Co-Counsel for the State. 02/02/18-02/05/l 8

Defendant charged with two counts of DUI, Count I-Impaired to the slightest degree and Count 2 Driving with drug or metabolite in system. Defendant was driving after smoking marijuana. Defendant found not guilty on count I and guilty on count 2. Case highlighted the difficulty in proving driving under the influence without a scientific measurement/evidence of the amount of the drug in a driver's system. In DUI alcohol cases there is a scientific measurement of the amount of alcohol and scientific expert testimony regarding the measured amount of alcohol necessary to be under the influence.

DState v. Thomas Cagney Cr2001-015187A. Honorable Carey Snyder Hyatt Maricopa County Superior Court Jury Trial- Co-counsel for State. 6/14/05-6/16/05.

Case of first impression for a probation case after the Blakely v. Washington decision requiring a jury determination of aggravating factors for an aggravated sentence. Trial solely on aggravating factors while on felony probation. Defendant on probation for Aggravated Assault, class 3 felony and Disorderly Conduct, class 6 felony. The State alleged five aggravating factors. The jury found the State had proven three aggravating factors, one factor not proven, and hung on one factor. Judge Hyatt recused before sentencing. Judge Brian Ishikawa sentenced Defendant to the Department of Corrections for 3.5 years on Aggravated Assault and 1 year on Disorderly Conduct. Defense Counsel: Mr. Carlos Daniel Carrion, Deputy Public Defender, Maricopa County Public Defender's Office 620 West Jackson St. Suite 4015 Phoenix, AZ 85003. (602)-506-7700

State v. Miguel Mansanares Cr2000-004416, Hon James McDougall/Hon Norman Hall Maricopa County Superior Court Jury Trial-Sole Counsel for State. 6/20/00- 6/23/00 Defendant charged with aggravated assault, class 3 dangerous felony. Defendant fired several shots at the victim who stopped to assist with car trouble. Defendant continuously attempted to file motions even though represented by counsel. Defendant represented himself for about a month. Defendant found guilty, sentenced: 6 years in the Department of Corrections. Case was significant as I had to deal with a pro se defendant for about 2 months. He continued filing motions and citing inapplicable law and rules. My responses had to address the court on why he was wrong and educate the defendant at the same time Defense counsel: Mr. Robert Wooten, Curry, Pearson, and Wooten. 814 W. !}State v. Judy Ann Brummett Cr99-007287(A) & State v. Judy Lee Brummett Cr99-007287(B). Honorable Thomas Dunevant III, Maricopa County Superior Court, Sole counsel for the State. Change of Plea for both 03/11/00. Sentencing 4/24/00 for Judy Ann Brummett and 04/11/00 for Judy Lee Brummett.

Defendants were mother and daughter who beat their female neighbor with a stick. Both defendants charged with aggravated assault, class 3 dangerous felony. The victim/neighbor sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized for observation. The only witness other than the victim was a nine-year-old girl who witnessed the attack from her apartment window and called 911. The nine-year old witness was fearful to testify because of possible retaliation from the Brummett family. The crime took place in Whitman, Arizona, a small unincorporated area patrolled by the of Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. Case required hours of preparation with the nine-year old witness, her mother, and victim advocate to assure her safety. This case taught me how work with children as witnesses and address their fears and concerns about being in the courtroom. The case was resolved with pleas satisfactory to all parties.

Defense counsel: Ms. Nancy Hinchcliffe 24 W. Camelback Rd Ste A616 (602)-252-3200 and Mr. Thomas Foster deceased .

filState v. Roger Tyler Cr1999-003165, Honorable Sherry Hutt, Maricopa County Superior Court, Two jury trials-Sole counsel for the State. 9/22/99-9/23/99 & 9/28/99-9/3099

This case was unique because it involved two jury trials with same witnesses stemming from the same incident. Aggravated assault charge severed from drug possession charges. First trial: Possession of narcotic drugs & Possession of drug paraphernalia. This case was significant because it was doing a bifurcated trial with the same witnesses and evidence but different charges to two separate juries. The jury convicted on both counts, Priors alleged, sentenced to 2.5 years in DOC on count 1 and I year DOC on count 2. Second trial: Aggravated Assault, class 6 felony. Defendant spit at a police officer. Jury acquitted. Defense counsel: Ms. Peggy LeMoine, There is no address or phone number listed with the State Bar.

Although I have not had any cases for arbitration or mediation, I have had many settlement conferences in Maricopa County Superior Court to resolve felony cases short of trial. Settlement conferences are held before a judge other than the assigned trial judge.

My husband and I are co-owners of a family business named Palm Valley Family Dentistry in Avondale, Arizona. My husband is the sole practicing dentist. It is incorporated, and I am the secretary. I do not run the day to day operations and only file the annual reports with the Arizona Corporation Commission.

The business is in Avondale. I am not involved in the practice. If a case came up involving a patient or someone connected with the practice, I will recuse myself from the case.

As an African female, I know I can bring in-depth perspective and knowledge to the bench. I was born in Queens, New York, where I went to school with people of different races, and who spoke a wide variety of languages. My parents moved to Nebraska for job reasons where I attended and graduated high school. I There were times when I made up a handful of ethnic minorities in the classroom. Many times, I may have been the only one or one of two ethnic minorities in the classroom. I understand the importance of having diversity so different perspectives can be heard and all can be included. As a prosecutor I have dealt with a variety of members of the public including victims, defendants, witnesses, attorneys and law enforcement. Judges must deal with the same group of people every day in their courtrooms. Each case is different, and you must know how to apply the law, but treat everyone with fairness that comes before you. I have experience in doing this daily.

I have been married to Dr. Michael Jones (a Phoenix native) for the past 27 years. In addition to caring for his patients, Mike is an officer and reservist in the United States Air Force, where he has served tours in San Diego, Hawaii, and Honduras. We have lived in Phoenix since 1993 where we raised our two sons, Michael Jr. and Christopher. We instilled in them values of faith, diligence, hard work, and service. As they were growing up, they played basketball. We supported them and their team, whether in school or through ! club teams. The values we instilled in them has shaped them into the young men they are today. Michael Jr. ! is a Senior Airman in the United States Air Force serving at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, after '

i serving at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Chris is a recent graduate of Northern Arizona University, where he was also a member of the track team. The same passion for excellence that I put into my children. 1 is the same passion I put into everything I do. Whether I am preparing a case, working on a CLE, or teaching my young choir a new song, I have the same qualities and values for excellency and compassion.

I want to be a judge because I have a heart for people and enjoy striving to find a solution. Most of my career has been in public service and helping others. I wish to continue serving the public as a member of the bench. I started out early in my legal career representing clients before the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) and Immigration and Naturalization Service, now known as, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I represented clients with criminal and traffic cases weekly the Phoenix Municipal Court. I had clients who were facing deportation while simultaneously facing criminal charges. The challenge was trying to obtain a favorable result in both. Each case could equally affect their lives and I must understand both the criminal and immigration law in order to represent my clients competently.

As a prosecutor I handled criminal felony and misdemeanor cases. For twelve years, I served as bureau chief of the Probation Violation Bureau. My bureau was responsible for all probation cases for the entire office. We daily handled high volume calendars with two assigned commissioners where the calendars ran all morning and hearings in the afternoon. Our calendars ran at 8:30am, 10:30am and 1 :30pm. Daily we handled about 100 probation cases and in 2017 we handled almost 13,000 cases.

I was responsible for training new attorneys and handling calendars for our probation violation courts. In addition to our regular probation courts I attended our therapeutic courts, which were DUI, drug court, Mental Health Court, Domestic Violence Court, and Veterans Court. I enjoyed doing this because I wanted to be a part of the solution to helping people bring real change in their lives. These courts are post sentencing and here we could tackle some of the underlying issues why someone was in the criminal justice system.

In October 201 7 I became bureau chief of Justice Courts West Bureau. My job consisted of training new attorneys, managing both attorneys and staff, and handling misdemeanor cases in our 16 justice courts. We were responsible for handling calendar that run all morning and others that run all day. In both bureaus I managed both the attorneys, paralegals, and the staff. The management skills that I have developed as a supervisor have equipped me for managing a courtroom.

In August of this year, I was able to transfer from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office to the Office of the Legal Defender to handle dependency cases. I left MCAO because I had the opportunity to work in juvenile law and have a direct impact with children and parents going through the dependency process in Superior Court.

I enjoy serving on committees because I enjoy helping others and knowing someone will benefit from it. Every assignment I have had has equipped me the being a judge and I am now ready to fulfill that role and continue serving the public in that capacity.
